1. OBJECTIVE
To establish a procedure for determining compressive strength of
hardened concrete cube based on BS EN 12390 and BS 1881 :
Part 116 and MS EN 12504 : 2013 part 1
2. SCOPE
This test method covers a procedure for determining the density
of hardened concrete cube. The weight and volume of the
hardened concrete cube are determined and density are
calculated.
This test method covers a procedure for testing hardened
concrete cube loaded to failure in a compression testing machine.
The maximum load sustained by the hardened concrete cube is
recorded and the compressive strength of the concrete is
calculated.

4. RESPONSIBILITY
4.1.
The TM is responsible for supervising and coordinating
the tests done by all laboratory personnel.
4.2.
The LE is responsible for conducting soil tests in
accordance to the standard.
4.3.
The LO shall assist the LE in preparing the test items
for the test.
5. APPARATUS
5.1.
Compressive testing machine, capable of applying any
force up to 3000kN.
5.2.
Calliper, capable of measuring the dimensions of cube
up to 150 mm.
5.3.
Balance, capable of measuring the weight of cube up to
30 kg
6. SAMPLE PREPARATION
6.1.
All cubes shall be tested as per received from client.
6.2.
All cubes shall be marked clearly and indelibly, without
damaging the cubes.
6.3.
Do not test the cubes which are made from badly
assembled moulds or clearly misshapen.
6.4.
All cubes shall be recorded to ensure traceability of the
cubes.
6.5.
If the specimen not cured in water, immerse the
specimen in curing tank for 5 min and test while they
are still wet.
7. TEST INSTRUCTION
7.1.

Area measurement
7.1.1.
Measurements of dimensions are made in each
of the orthogonal directions (x, y), at the lines
indicated in Figure 1 to an accuracy of 0.5% of
the dimensions. If any dimension is greater, or
less than, 3% from the designated size, then the
cube is rejected as shown in Table 1.

Force measurement
7.2.1.
Before placing the cubes, make sure that the
testing machine bearing surfaces are wiped
clean & any loose grit or extraneous material is
removed from the surfaces of the cube which
will in contact with the platens.
7.2.2.
Carefully align & centre the cube between
upper and lower platens and the load will be
applied to two opposite cast faces.
7.2.3.
Without shock apply & increase the load
continuously at a nominal rate until the failure
occurs and record the maximum load. The
loading rate should be between 0.2N/(mm2.s) to
0.4N/(mm2.s) (i.e. 270 to 540kN/min for
150mm x 150mmx 150mm cubes).

The mean values (xm, ym) are calculated from

the six measurements in each direction on the
loading faces and expressed to the nearest 1mm
of the dimension.
The area of the cube loading face, Ac = xm x
ym is calculated and expressed to the nearest 1
mm2.
The mean values (zm) is calculated from the
four measurements in each direction on the nonloading faces and expressed to the nearest 1mm
of the dimension.

Calculate compressive strength

8.2.1.
The compressive strength is given by the
equation;
F
f c=
Ac
Where
fc is the compressive strength, in MPa or
N/mm2;
F is the maximum load at failure, in kN;
Ac is the cross sectional area of the cube
which the compressive force acts.
8.2.2.

The compressive strength shall be expressed to

the nearest 0.1 MPa (N/mm2).

9. GENERAL
9.1.
All raw data and a visual description or general
classification of the soil based on what is seen, felt and
smelt are recorded in the Test Form F-WI-03.
9.2.
The LE shall compile, check and enter the raw data
into the computer for results and report writing
9.3.
For details, please refer to MS EN 12390-1: 2012
