Empowering Education

What is needed is the spirit among the youth that - I can do it, we can do it and the
nation can do it. Our educational institutions have to concentrate on developing the
leadership traits and the confidence to perform among every youth of the nation. This
quality of leadership will certainly empower the three billion people of the world at its
bottom most with sustainable development as its focus.
Hon'ble Late Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam,
Former President of India
(Inauguration of Aashray - Techno Social Incubator, EDII on 20.6.2015)

Directors Message

As India embarks upon its journey from tradition to modernity, from poverty to plenty, the
entire experience of the countrys growth is extremely intriguing. The consequent expansion
of the service sector with the phenomenal growth of Information technology, has indeed
delivered increased growth to the economy and robust income in the hands of the emergent
middle class society. However, amidst all the chaos of Indias commendable growth
trajectory, co-exists another India, which lies in its bottommost strata, that seems to have
bypassed this economic growth and are constantly looking up for support and facilitation to
become a part of the same growth story. The skills required to bring sustainable solutions to
the problems faced by the people from the bottom of the pyramid, are fundamentally
different, and EDII students of Post Graduate Diploma in Management Development
Studies are prepared as socially responsible individuals and professionally competent
development intermediaries to work at the grassroots, at the policy-level, undertaking
research, designing Corporate Social Responsibility Programmes and implementing a variety
a projects to be able to address the issues and problems faced by the people. It is primarily the
passion that drives our students of Development Studies, to change the world, a passion to
ensure better accessibility of the poor to much needed services and a passion to introduce a
sustainable social change in order to achieve economic equilibrium, that does not bypass the
poor.
Teaching, training and research-experience of our faculty, over the past several years has
culminated to the making of a theoretically rigorous programme, which is empirically
grounded and multi-disciplinary in its orientation. As the institution transfers rich experience
and expertise of Micro Enterprise Development, Microfinance and Livelihood promotion,
EDII has been a member of Livelihoods Manthan Consortium, which enables students to
undertake internship with State Rural Livelihoods Mission, under NRLM. Similarly, all
students undergo a two-month internship period, which prepares them to gather a strong
understanding of local issues, problem identification and seeking innovative solutions to
community participation.
Development Studies, offered by EDII encompasses a comprehensive programme that offers
learning about the development processes and discourses around it, through participation in
seminar courses, field-based training, colloquiums, workshops, which prepare the graduating
students to enter professional careers in civil society organizations, non-governmental
organizations, international multilateral agencies like UNDP, ILO, socially responsible
corporates or, channelize their entrepreneurial spirit by being a socially inclined change-

maker, exercising market-driven solutions to pressing social problems by establishing their

own social enterprises and businesses.
I hereby wish the students all the best in their future, and ensure all the organizations
participating in the EDII Placements and Internships, that in our students, will they find
professional competence and resourcefulness, required for social change and entrepreneurial
capabilities.
Good wishes,
Dr. Sunil Shukla
Director, EDII

Pedagogy
Development management education is an approach to learning that questions the dominant
paradigm of development and inspires our students to drive a change towards a world of
greater social justice and equality.
This learner-centric pedagogy involves four major areas of inclusion through a rural
immersion at the commencement of the course during the induction period, two workshops
every tri-semester focused on building students knowledge of self, market and society,
exposure to vivid methods of learning through rural field visits, industrial visits,
presentations, case studies and an internship as the first year is completed. These methods
induce self-study and group work among the students, which enhance the interpersonal skills
and inculcate the spirit of team work.
Rural field excursions and visits

Field visits contribute to an increased exposure to real life scenarios, effective learning and
encourage qualities of leadership, discipline and self-confidence among students. The
institution carries out field trips to near-by villages and to myriad NGOs, regularly,
considering on-field exposure as significant for creating thinkers, to spark thoughts and
acknowledge and eventually address pressing issues.

Summer Internship
Students are catechized to choose their Areas of Interest to move forward with their forte
and look out for firms they prefer, in addition with guidance, mentoring and counseling
students to facilitate them to choose their areas, which mostly tend to involve fields like
Micro Finance, Water Sanitation and Hygiene, ICT for Development, Education, Gender
Studies, Social Entrepreneurship and much more.
Case Studies and Presentations
Enmeshing curriculum with case studies and regular presentations builds confidence and
knowledge of real time situations, boost up confidence and enhance learning - as we believe
in developing quick problem solvers.

Initiatives
The Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India is an institution where ideas are
constantly brewing. It is a seat of learning where, diverse schools of thought are encouraged.
For individuals with entrepreneurial ambitions, who desire to strike gold, this is the place to
be. Whether it is business entrepreneurship or development studies, seminars and workshops
with experts cutting across various fields, are regular affairs here.

Aashray
Social entrepreneurship is all about recognizing inventive solutions for all-encompassing
development that mitigates complex social problems and market failures, comes from
business model is driven by social concern rather than financial or market opportunities.
Keeping this in mind, Saath Livelihood Services (Saath Livelihoods) is independently
promoting an Incubation and Research Centre, with the Entrepreneurship Development
Institute of India, Ahmedabad (Centre for Social Entrepreneurship and Corporate Social
Responsibility) to be the managing agency, which has also brought in the expertise of Ashoka
India and Incube Venture Private Limited to join hands to achieve its objectives of Social
Venture promotion. The Incubation and Research Centre is to be named Aashray, which will
be for promotion of innovations, setting-up of social enterprises and scaling-up of innovative
ventures and grassroots technologies. Along with state-of-the art infrastructural services,
incubates will be mentored by experts from several relevant fields and will be offered a
fellowship of six months with a business entity in the identical line of business as envisaged
in the project. An unstinting ecosystem would make angel funding available to the idea till it
is converted into a sustainable project of its own.

Solar energy workshop:

The availability of solar energy in large magnitude can become a huge source of electricity. If
the means to make efficient use of solar energy could be found, it would reduce our reliance
on non-renewable sources of energy and make our environment cleaner. The National Solar
Mission aims at generating renewable energy by five folds to reach to 1,75,000 MW by 2022.
To create awareness about the potential of the solar sector among todays youth, the
Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India, in association with Gujarat CSR Authority,
Gujarat Venture Finance Limited, Aspire Disruptive Skill Foundation and Gujarat
Technological University, had organized a half-day workshop on Entrepreneurial
Opportunities in the field of Solar Energy Sector on 3 September, 2015.
