SOLUTION STOICHIOMETRY
WHAT YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO WHEN YOU HAVE FINISHED THIS TOPIC:
1) Identify an ionic compound as soluble or insoluble in water, based on the solubility
rules. (You must memorize that all compounds that contain the cations Na+, K+ or NH4+,
or the anions NO3 or C2H3O2 are soluble in water. The remaining solubility rules will be
provided for you on quizzes and exams.)
2) Predict and write net ionic equations for the following reaction types:
a) Precipitation reactions, including reactions of NH3 with metal ions to form
insoluble hydroxides.
b) Acid-base reactions involving OH reacting with a strong or a weak acid.
c) Acid-base reactions involving NH3 reacting with a strong or a weak acid.
d) Formation of a weak acid from H+ and an anion.
e) Reactions of carbonates and bicarbonates with acids to form CO2.
3) Determine any one of the molarity of a solution, the mass of solute, and the volume of
solution, given the other two.
4) Solve dilution problems.
5) Carry out material balances for reactions in aqueous solution.
READING ASSIGNMENT:
Chapter 4: sections 4.1 through 4.9. (We will not cover redox reactions in Chem 101A.)
Supplemental handouts: Properties and Reactivity of Inorganic Compounds for Chem
101A and Writing Net Ionic Equations for Chem 101A
RELEVANT PROBLEMS: (these will not be collected and graded, but you are expected to
be able to do them)

THE REQUIRED LEVEL 2 HOMEWORK
STARTS ON THE NEXT PAGE
Level 1 problems are available through Sapling Learning online homework system.
Complete these problems before starting the level 2 homework.
Level 2 problems are provided below. These must be answered on a separate sheet of paper
and handed in at the start of class on the due date. Answers will be available on the class website.
You must check your own answers. Full credit will be given for completion; however, credit will
only be given to those students who have previously completed the foundational level 1
problems. The due date will be announced in lecture.
