Pipes made of polyethylene

Version 4.1

In 1988, Revaho started producing PE pipes at Naff to meet the demand for
quality pipes for horticulture, and drip irrigation in particular. Stricter
requirements with respect to raw materials, composition, production and
inspection have ultimately resulted in a quality which guarantees a reliable
and durable product.
Logical steps in this development were certification by KIWA (1993) and
GASTEC (1995). Naff still produces top quality PE pipes in sizes 3-250 mm,
in a variety of lengths and pressure classes. Other lengths and/or sizes are
available on request. Just ask our sales department.
General
Pipes have been used for ages in road construction, horticulture, fruit culture, industry, etc. Concrete, PVC and
steel are well-known materials used for these pipes. Over the past few decades, however, polyethylene has
become an increasingly popular material for the production of pipes. The reason for choosing polyethylene is
that it is evolving significantly and its quality is therefore increasingly improving. Examples of existing types are
PE 40, PE 63, PE 80, PE 100 and even PE 125 is expected to be introduced.
Popular names are LDPE, MDPE, HDPE and ZPE. These are more general terms, however, which prove
nothing about the strength of a polyethylene as opposed to terms such as PE 40, PE 63, PE 80 and PE 100.
Naffs production of pipes is based on the BRL-K533-03 (KIWA) and NEN-EN-1555-2 standards.
Polyethylene in various strengths
The difference between PE 40, PE 63, PE 80 and PE 100 is found in the ultimate design stress, on the basis
of which the continuous working pressure at 20C can be determined. Assuming an unchanged dimension of
the pipe at 20C, a pipe made of PE 100 will be able to resist 25% more pressure than a pipe made of PE 80.
In brief, PE 40 may be considered the weakest material and PE 100 the strongest. Various types of
polyethylene are therefore used, depending on the applications.
Quality comes first
Revaho and Naff consider quality of paramount importance. The goods produced must comply with strict
requirements. Several inspections are held in order to guarantee the quality. Naff has a modern laboratory with
all the equipment needed to test the products according to the requirements.
Naffs main standard inspections are:
- Inspection of incoming materials: the materials are tested upon delivery in
order to determine whether they comply with the requirements and,
consequently, whether they can be used for production.
- Production inspection by the operators: during the production process, the
operators monitor the production parameters.
- Laboratory tests: random tests during the production process provide extra
certainty about the quality of the pipe produced.
- Laboratory release tests: after production, all produced orders are tested
for bursting pressure [EN-921], tensile strength [ISO-6259], density [ISO-1183],
stress-cracking [ISO-8796 and ASAE S435], dimensions and appearance
[NEN-EN-1555-2 and BRL-K533-03]. These tests guarantee the supply of a
constant and reliable quality which is the basis of Naffs success.

KIWA and GASTEC QA certificates

Version 4.1

Naff obtained the KIWA certificate in 1993 and the GASTEC QA test requirements No. 8 certificate in 1998.
The standards to be complied with are BRL K533-03 for KIWA and NEN-EN-1555 for GASTEC QA.
Naff has obtained KIWA certification for PE 40 and PE 80 (PE 100 mid-2005) and the GASTEC QA certificate
for PE 80. Both authorities check whether Naff complies with the above-mentioned standards. Several times
per year, a KIWA and/or GASTEC QA auditor comes to check the documentation and measuring results.
Auditors check at random, inspecting pipes taken from stock and comparing them with the values established
by Naff. The KIWA and GASTEC QA laboratories also carry out various checks, such as pressure tests on
pipes produced by Naff. Over the years, a quality management system has been developed which guarantees
reproducibility of the quality and which complies with the KIWA and GASTEC QA requirements. An important
fact is that even all non-certified products made by Naff are tested and dealt with according to the same strict
standards.

Stripes on PE pipes
As of 2005, KIWA-approved pipes for drinking water distribution must be
striped blue.
This obligation applies to KIWA-approved pipes made of PE 40, PE 80 and
PE 100. A KIWA-approved pipe made of PE 100 may also be uniformly blue,
though this is not compulsory.
Pipes for gas distribution (PE 80 or PE 100) must be KIWA-GAS or
GASTEC QA approved pipes in black, black with yellow stripes, or uniformly
yellow.
In all probability, the pipes produced for gas distribution will be required to be black with yellow stripes or
uniformly yellow in the future.
Traceability
All production runs are given a unique number.
This unique number is printed on the pipe and is also used on all production and test forms for the order
concerned. All data is stored according to this number and is saved for 10 years. In the event of complaints,
the production history can be traced on the basis of the order number.
Joints for polyethylene
Well-known techniques for joining polyethylene pipes are:
- Electric welding (see ELGEF-Plus)
- Butt welding
- Couplings (see Alprene or quick coupling system)
- Saddles (see Alprene)
- Flanged joints (see ELGEF-Plus and VDL).

Advantages of Polyethylene

Version 4.1

Polyethylene is a durable material: it is tough, can be laid in bends and is

resistant to a large number of chemicals (with the exception of soap and oil,
for example). PE is perfectly weldable to make joints which are 100%
waterproof and resistant to tensile strain. It is frost-proof and can be
installed both underground and above ground.Larger diameters are
generally installed underground on account of elongation and contraction of
PE under the influence of temperature fluctuations. Polyethylene is easily
recyclable and it is therefore environment friendly. In general, the wall
thickness of PE is greater than that of PVC, for example, which provides
extra certainty and, in combination with the toughness of PE, extra safety too.
Applications of PE pipes and hoses
The specific characteristics of PE allow for a great variety of applications.
-KIWA certified: Blue striped (from the end of 2004) LDPE or HDPE pipes
and hoses are used for drinking water distribution in public and private
networks. LDPE is mostly used for thinner hoses and is more flexible, which
makes it easy to handle.
-GASTEC certified: Yellow striped HDPE pipes and hoses, uniformly yellow
pipe or uniformly black pipe (from the end of 2004) are intended for
transport of gas on both public and private grounds.
-non-certified LDPE: black LDPE pipes and hoses for transport of water in
agriculture, horticulture, soil heating etc. (not for drinking water). Familiar
examples are drip hoses, sprinkler systems, but also mat heating and floor
heating hoses.
-non-certified HDPE (PE63 / PE80): black HDPE pipes and hoses for transport of water in for example
agriculture and horticulture (not for drinking water). HDPE is mostly used for more rigid hoses or pipes of larger
diameters. Familiar uses are: main pipes and manifolds for irrigation systems in golf courses, fruit culture,
agriculture and increasingly in greenhouses. HDPE is also used for ground frost prevention, water supply for
animals, controlled drilling and pressure sewer systems. The great variety of applications includes transport
pipes for soil heating, protection sheaths for cables or PVC pipes, and use as a float.
-non-certified PE100: is generally put to the same use as non-certified HDPE, but the great advantage is that
the material is stronger so that a thinner wall can be used while the pressure class remains unchanged. As a
result, the pipe is lighter and has a higher flow rate.

PE quick coupling system

Version 4.1

Manufacturer: NAFF
The PE quick coupling system is a simple and durable mobile pipe system
for outdoor cultivation. Polyethylene makes the system stronger (and
therefore more durable) and/or more flexible (easier to adjust) than similar
systems made of Aluminium or PVC.
The PE coupling system pipes are fitted with M(ale) and F(emale) ends with
a large rubber seal and stainless steel quick couplings allowing for quick assembly and disassembly. Every
piece of pipe is fitted with a standard nozzle connection (on the F part), in which a nozzle can be mounted
either directly or by means of a standpipe (optionally fitted with a quick valve).
For improved stability, stabilising plates can be mounted below the F-connectors.
The quick coupling system is used for sprinkler pipes, but also for mobile manifolds in drip systems for
example. Extra connections can be made by means of saddles. The PE coupling system is frost-proof and
resistant to commonly used fertilisers and chemicals. Connectors (F. x female thread), tees and end caps (m)
are available to complement the system.

Alu-Rail

Version 4.1

Alu rail is a combined aluminium-polyethylene suspension system as an

alternative for PVC irrigation pipes and/or PE hoses on wire systems. The
aluminium rail allows for larger spans, thus avoiding the use of bracing wires
and wire hooks. A PE hose is inserted into the aluminium section, in which
nozzles, foggers or drippers can easily be mounted at any spacing. In
shorter spans, the Alu rail can simultaneously be used for suspension of hanging plants. The Alu rail can be
suspended by means of chain or wire, upright, crosswise or upside down. The Alu rail is also suitable for
suspension of PE or other pipe systems used in stock breeding, industry and sanitary systems.

ELGEF-Plus: electrofusion fittings

Version 4.1

Manufacturer: Georg Fischer

ELGEF-Plus is a complete set of Gastec-approved PE electrofusion fittings

for PE 100, PE 80 and PE 63 pipes.
Electrofusion fittings have a cast heating helix coil which, when live, triggers
fusion of the fitting with the PE pipe and makes a reliable joint. The fusion
process takes place very simply by connecting the fusion transformer to the
fittings (for complete fusion procedure, see below). The wall thickness of the
PE pipe may vary (slightly).
The ELGEF-Plus set contains fittings from 20 to 500 mm. The modular
programme includes (transition) couplings, branches, elbows and saddles in reducing versions, if required. All
ELGEF-Plus fittings are individually packaged, complete with a magnetic card and bar code. The card is read
by the welding device, after which the fusion process is automatically adjusted. The fusion time and cooling
down time are shown on the display of the fusion transformer.
The fusion transformer runs on safety current (8-48 VAC fusion voltage) and therefore provides top quality
under any circumstances.
The heating helix coil of the ELGEF-Plus fittings is dynamically divided which means that heat will only develop
where it is required, thus providing extra certainty. Fittings up to 63 mm have incorporated locking screws.
Larger sizes require external fixation during welding.
Transitions from PE pipes to other materials (PVC for example) can be made by means of flanged joints,
WAGA couplings or saddles. Fittings up to 63 mm can easily be combined with thread adapters for
transitions and special applications.
Besides fittings, Revaho also supplies the necessary scraping devices (such as rotary scrapers), fixation
clamps and +GF+ welding machines. The standard ELGEF set contains fittings with spigots for mirror welding
or butt welding. The ELGEF set can also be combined with electrofusion fittings from the ELGEF-Plus set.

Welding instructions for ELGEF-Plus

Version 4.1

Electrofusion joints are easy to make if a number of basic rules are followed.
Indeed, 80% of the quality of the joints made rely on these rules.
1. Start by checking the welding machine and the materials to be welded.
2. Remove coarse dirt particles and shorten the pipe at right angles with a cutter or saw.
3. Clean the pipe section to be welded with a dry cloth and then scrape the top surface (0.2 mm) off the pipe
by hand, lengthwise. +GF+ rotation scrapers are the best option for this purpose.
Never use sandpaper or abrasive cloth.
4. Immediately prior to welding, degrease the surface with a +GF+ cleaning cloth or an appropriate cleaner
(use non-fluffing, undyed paper).
5. Mark the insertion depth on the pipe.
6. Now take the fitting out of the packaging. Important notice: clean the welding surface of the fitting with a
cleaning cloth, if touched by hand.
7. Slide the fitting over the pipe until the mark or stop and tighten the screws of the integrated positioning
clamp (fittings up to 63 mm). For larger diameters, place the pipe and fitting in the fixing clamp and tighten
firmly.
8. Connect the 4 mm adapter plugs of the welding machine to the fittings and switch it on.
9. The welding data is read by means of the magnetic card or bar code. Check the information on the display.
Start the welding cycle and monitor the progress. Indicate on the pipe at what point in time the clamps may
be removed (after welding time plus cooling period). During welding, the welding indicators on the fitting will
move up to indicate that the welding cycle has started.
10.The welding clamps can be removed after the cooling period (for fittings exceeding 75 mm).

After the welding cycle, the welding information appears on the transformer display. This information can be
recorded in a log. More sophisticated welding transformers store this information automatically.

Scraper

Version 4.1

In preparation for welding with electrofusion fittings, the oxide film must be
removed from the pipe sections to be welded.
A hand scraper can be used (lengthwise) for this purpose or, much easier, a
rotating scraper which automatically removes the 0.2 mm surface layer.
A variety of rotating scrapers are available for the following pipe sizes:
120-163 mm
163-180 mm
180-315 mm
Hand scraper

Pipe aligning clamp

Pipe aligning clamps are used to align pipes which are taken from rolls in
order that the ends are positioned straight opposite each other to facilitate
welding.
Pipe aligning clamps are available for the following sizes:
25-163 mm
63-125 mm
Pipe aligning clamp

Welding clamps

4-fold clamp

ELGEF-Plus fittings up to 63 mm are fitted with incorporated fixing

clamps. From 75 mm, exterior clamps are required. The function of the
fixing clamp is to prevent the PE pipe from shifting during welding and
during the cooling period, thus maintaining the pressure required to obtain a
proper joint. Although the double clamp is more user-friendly, the 4-fold
clamp ensures improved positioning of the components to be welded and is
therefore more suitable for welding PE pipe from rolls.
Fixing clamps are available for the following pipe sizes:
63-125 mm: double clamp
110-225 mm: double clamp
63-125 mm: 4-fold clamp
110-225 mm: 4-fold clamp
225-400 mm: 4-fold clamp

Cleaning cloths
Cleaning cloths are used to clean the PE pipe after scraping. Furthermore,
the static load is removed from the pipe end during cleaning, in order to
reduce the attraction of dirt particles. Fittings taken directly from the
packaging need not be cleaned. The insides of fittings already unwrapped
before use must be cleaned in order to prevent enclosure of dirt particles
during welding.

A16 Clamping couplings (POLY16 Plus System)

Version 4.1

Manufacturer: GF-Alprene.

The A16 series consists of top quality clamping couplings for 16-110 mm
PE pipes (LDPE, PE80, PE100), KIWA-approved, rated for 16 bar. Alprene
clamping couplings can be mounted without disassembly (Push-fit).
Alprene A16 clamping couplings are used in drinking water supply systems,
road building, hydraulic engineering, industry and the agricultural sector.
The A16 is also ideally suitable for coupling of cable protection pipes.
Couplings with female thread have a stainless steel back-up ring. All components are perfectly geared to one
another:
The black polypropylene housing is extremely sturdy, due to the strengthening ribs.
Each housing bears product information for improved traceability. The polypropylene gland ensures that the
gasket seals the pipe perfectly once the swivel has been tightened. The locked ring will not drop from the
coupling during disassembly. The flexible polyacetal clamping ring ensures that the sealing properties of the
fitting remain intact upon removal of the pipe. The light blue polypropylene swivel is UV-resistant and reinforced
for extra protection.
The A16 is the only clamping coupling with a patented double NBR seal (with lubricant) for improved sealing of
pipes which are slightly oval, damaged or undersized. The conical shape of the seal facilitates smooth insertion
of PE pipes and creates a larger contact surface with the pipe, which guarantees a perfect seal for the entire
life of the fitting. The A16 also remains absolutely sealed in suction lines or if a temporary vacuum occurs. Its
sturdy, extremely compact and ergonomic design makes the fitting easy to attach, even at locations which are
hard to access.

AZ (A10) Clamping couplings

Version 4.1

Manufacturer: GF-Alprene

The AZ series consists of 10 bar clamping couplings for 16-110 mm PE

pipes. The couplings can be mounted without having to disassemble the
swivel (Push-fit). The Alprene AZ series is used in road construction,
hydraulic engineering, industry and the agricultural sector. The AZ series is
also suitable for coupling of cable protection pipes. The AZ is an economical
alternative to the A16. The rigid clamping ring ensures perfect grip on the
hose and presses the locking ring against the O ring, thus guaranteeing a waterproof seal. Its sturdy, extremely
compact and ergonomic design makes the fitting easy to attach, even at locations which are hard to access.

Tapping saddles

Version 4.1

Manufacturer: GF-Alprene.

Alprene tapping saddles allow for easy fitting of branches in (existing) 20315 mm PE and PVC pipes. These -4 female threaded saddles are used
in road construction, hydraulic engineering, industry and the agricultural
sector. The saddles are compact and therefore easy to attach, even at
locations which are hard to access.

Type 654X

The 654X type (20-160 mm with -2 connection) is supplied with a stainless steel strengthening ring (1" and
larger), stainless steel nuts and bolts and a flat sealing ring. They are individually packaged. The flat sealing
ring ensures a perfect seal, even if the pipe is slightly oval and in the event of water shock. Ribs in the saddle
prevent the PE pipe from rotating. The 550 type (25-110 mm with -2 connection) is supplied with galvanised
nuts and bolts and an O ring seal, packaged individually: the economical solution for the agricultural sector.

Self-sealing threaded fittings

Version 4.1

Manufacturer: Tavlit

Polypropylene (PP) threaded fittings are universal threaded couplings with

an incorporated O ring for assembly without teflon tape (self-sealing).
The PP threaded fittings set is extremely complete and includes threaded
(transition) sockets and (transition) nipples, angles, tees and end plugs, both
male and female threaded. The advantage of the self-sealing fittings is not
only that they reduce assembly time (no tape or glue required), but the components can also easily be turned
after assembly without causing leakage.

Nutlock fitting

Version 4.1

Manufacturer: Tavlit

Nutlock fittings combine the advantages of barbed connectors and clamping

couplings. The PE hose is slid over the loose grip and fastened with the
swivel. No rings are required to seal the hose. The hose is easily assembled
and disassembled, for a new crop for example: the grip and swivel remain on
the hose and will not get lost. Nutlock fittings are available as couplings, tees
or end sets, male or female threaded. The Nutlock fitting has standard B.S.P.T. thread. Nutlock fittings make a
flexible system and facilitate future adjustment of standard Tavlit threaded couplings (addition or removal of
swivel and grip, for example). The use of Nutlock fittings enables effortless installation or removal of valves,
filters, water gauges etc. They can be repaired, replaced or temporarily removed for protection against frost in
no time at all.
