Palin on War with Iran: Why She’s Wrong
Again

Sara Palin recently stated that declaring
war against Iran would make the president
appear to be a tougher president. These
comments illustrate the governor’s glaring
lack of understanding of foreign affairs
and failure to appreciate the importance
of exhaustive and patient diplomacy.
Furthermore, it once again embraces the
neo-conservative belief that war is the
first and foremost option to all America’s

month. Along with Dave
Marsden’s election to the
state senate in January, this marks three
important victories in a row for Fairfax
Democrats, two of them in districts that
have traditionally been Republican.
I also offer my thanks to all of you who
worked so hard on behalf of our candidates
to help them reach the finish line.
Now the focus will turn to our Congres-
sional races and I look forward to working
with many of you as I seek reelection to a
second term in the U.S. House of Represen-
tatives from Virginia’s 11th District which
covers much of Fairfax County along with
part of Prince William County and all of
the City of Fairfax.
It will be a difficult political climate this
year, but I am confident we will prevail
foreign policy challenges. Even former
Vice President Cheney dismissed Palin’s
comments: ”The stakes are too high, the
consequences too significant to be treating
those as simple political calculations.”
The Iranian government, to be sure, is
engaged in its share of destabilizing activi-
ties. Its support for Hezbollah with money
and weapons transfers and its support for
Iraqi militias through the provision of IEDs

through hard work and the knowledge that
we are fighting for the issues that will make
Fairfax, all of Northern Virginia, and our
nation a better place.
My campaign, Jim Moran’s campaign
in the 8th, and the campaign of our 10th
District nominee will be counting on you
and other dedicated volunteers from FCDC
for boots on the ground, canvassing, phone
banking, mailings, and GOTV efforts be-
tween now and Election Day.
We need your help to keep our vot-
ers energized, engaged, and involved
because, I assure you, the other side is en-
ergized, too.
It seems that Virginia elections are never-
ending but we already have a track record
of success in 2010 here in Fairfax County.
Working together, we will continue that
trend through November and maintain
Northern Virginia’s strong Democratic
representation in Congress.

However, it is the lack of transparency
involving Iran’s nuclear research program
that arouses suspicions and concerns in the
West and Middle-East. Iran recently stated
that it intends to enrich uranium to twenty
percent from the current level of four
percent. A level of ninety percent enrich-
ment is needed for weapons grade uranium.
On February 17 the IAEA confirmed that
Iran has indeed enriched small amounts of
uranium to twenty percent and has credible
evidence that Iran has been attempting to
develop a nuclear warhead.
Of the many technological hurdles that
Iran needs to overcome in order to develop
nuclear weapons, there is evidence to sug-
gest that Iran continues to have difficulty
operating the nuclear machinery efficiently
and it still needs several years to gather
sufficient enriched uranium.
Iran is also in the midst of a domestic
upheaval which the U.S. should weigh
heavily in its calculations. The fallout from
the Iranian elections of 2009 continues to
trouble the ruling regime. The ayatollahs
and President Ahmadinejad and their tools
of oppression – the Revolutionary Guard
and Basij are reviled by many Iranians. Any
attack on Iran may have the unwanted effect
of strengthening Ahmadinejad and uniting
the people behind a regime they oppose. In
fact, some analysts suggest that the Iranian
government is using the nuclear standoff
with the west in order to divert attention
away from the domestic turmoil. Accord-

A year ago in February, Braddock handled
what would be the first of six elections, five
of which were “special” which means that
they were off the radar for most voters and
required extra effort to recuit volunteers and
get out the vote.
Whether the margin was big or small,
the outcome was the same—we elected
David Marsden to the senate and replaced
him in the house with Eileen Filler-Corn.

“What you’ve been hearing on the
streets is ‘Death to the dictator,’ not
‘Death to America.’ The U.S. should
only foster that sentiment. Change in
Iran must come from within, it cannot
be forced from outside.
Finally, those who call for an attack
on Iran fail to consider the aftermath.
Retired General Zinni said it best:
“After you’ve dropped those bombs on
those hardened facilities, what happens
next? ... Because, eventually, if you
follow this all the way down, eventu-
ally I’m putting boots on the ground
somewhere. And like I tell my friends,
if you like Iraq and Afghanistan, you’ll
love Iran.”
According to Nicholas Burns, a for-
mer Bush administration official, “The
reality is that Iran is more isolated

campaign and for the enthusiasm and energy
of her staff and volunteers!
And, kudos to our hard-working precinct
captains. Five Braddock precincts in the
41st District campaign went Democratic and
voter participation was healthy enough to
make the difference. In fact, our brand new
precinct captain, Sally Burdick, managed to
beat every single precinct in this race with
30.1 percent voter participation.

The DDDC had its first meeting of 2010
on Thursday, February 25 at the Great Falls
Public Library. The committee heard from
10th Congressional District congressional
candidates (and DDDC members) Jeff
Barnett and Dennis Findley. Dennis took
the occasion to announce his withdrawal
from the race for personal reasons. We were
all inspired by his passion and commitment
to caring, responsive government and we
wish him and his family all the best. We also
today because of this strategy, and be-
cause of their own behavior, than they
were a year ago.” It is because Obama
has made a genuine attempt to engage
Iran in dialogue. This helps broaden
international support for sanctions as
it cannot be said that this president is
in a rush to war.
The Obama Administration is at-
tempting to deal with the Iranian issue
by building a global consensus for
tough yet targeted sanctions against
Iran. At the same time the adminis-
tration has worked to dissuade Israel
from attacking Iran’s nuclear infra-
structure – a move that could lead to
a wider regional conflict. The US has
been at war in Iraq and Afghanistan
now for almost nine years. It is Af-
ghanistan that needs America’s focus
now. q

The Hunter Mill Democratic Commit-
tee held its February meeting at the Flint
Hill Elementary School at 7:30 PM on
February 18. Guests included Jeff Barmett,
candidate for congress, 10th Congressio-
nal House District, Emily Samhammer,
Filler-Corn campaign, Eric Byler, Coffee
Party effort, and Rengin Morro and Mike
Collins, candidates for the Reston Asso-
ciation Board. A discussion led by Emily
Samhammer and Sue Langley included
Filler-Corn campaign activities including
absentee voting, poll staffing, canvassing,
phone banking, and flushing. Further dis-
cussion included precinct captain status and
VAN training, officer status, FCDC stand-
ing committee status, and planning for the
Hunter Mill Annual Lasagna Dinner that
will be held on Saturday April 10 at the
Reston Community Center. Noteworthy
announcements included a Cathy Hudgins
fundraiser on March 14, the DPVA JJ
dinner on March 20, the DAD reception
with Terry McAuliffe on February 24, the
Connolly Saint Patrick’s party on March
17, the FCDC JJ dinner on May 23, and
the HMDDC picnic on July 24.
The next HMDDC meeting will be held
on March 18 at 7:30 PM at the Dogwood
Elementary School in Reston. Please refer

new Democratic school board member in
Mason and a new Democratic delegate in

Congratulations to Sandy Evans and
her victory on March 2 to be the Mason
District School Board member. Sandy
won this special election with a lot of your
hard work: canvassing and phone banking
day in and day out; stuffing envelopes, put-
ting signs out in snow banks – so much for
frozen ground; and making sure that our
neighbors and friends went to the polls
on that cold rainy Tuesday. I know that I
am speaking for Sandy when I thank all of
you who stepped up to the plate and made
sure we won.
Congratulations to Eileen Filler-Corn
and everyone in the 41st District. Eileen
won her election to fill Dave Marsden’s
seat by 37 votes on Tuesday, March 2 and
was sworn in the next day!
Democrats needed these two wins and
everyone worked hard to that end. Con-
gratulations!
We have a lot of work ahead of us this
next cycle. We need to continue working
in our precincts identifying those Demo-

crats who will come out in November and
take us to victory in our congressional
races this fall. The Republicans are target-
ing Gerry and the campaign will be ugly.

Mt. Vernon congratulates Eileen Filler-
Corn for her victory in the 41st House of
Delegates race. She will make a fine col-
league for our District’s four Democratic
delegates.
Save the date May 1 for Mt. Vernon’s
spring fundraising event. For a number of
reasons, we postponed our annual Mardi
Gras fundraiser that will this year be held
as an afternoon spring garden party at an
outdoor venue amidst 3,000 blooms at a
private home in Saratoga. Watch the April

At our last meeting, Pat Hines of Hunter
Mill District introduced us to the new Cof-
fee Party
Founded by Annabelle Park and Eric
Byler, producers of the documentary film
“9500 Liberty,” about the immigration
controversy in Prince William County, the
Coffee Party movement with the tagline,
“Wake Up and Stand Up,” was started on
Facebook and now has more than 16,000
followers. Its mission statement is:
The Coffee Party movement gives voice
to Americans — across every demographic
— who want to see cooperation in gov-
ernment. We recognize that the federal
government is not the enemy of the people,
but the expression of our collective will, and
that we must participate in the democratic
process in order to address the challenges
that we face as Americans. As voters and
grassroots volunteers, we will support lead-
ers who work toward positive solutions, and
hold accountable those who obstruct them.
Pat said she hopes the Coffee Party will
attract enough members to hold demonstra-
tions and even a convention to get media
coverage to counter the Tea Party’s anti-
government message. Annabelle has since

Mt. Vernon Democrats staffed a voter
registration and information table at the
annual Mt. Vernon Town Hall meeting Feb.
20, at Mt. Vernon High School. School and
county officials presented a bleak financial
picture for the next several years. Supervisor
Gerry Hyland gave his annual bus tour of
the district, highlighting new development
and plans for change. He announced that
he has not yet decided whether to run for
reelection in 2011.
The MVDDC executive committee held
an all-day retreat in January to set up goals
and objectives for the coming year. We
considered member response to an email
survey about priorities and are currently
drafting objectives that will be folded into
the two-year plan to be presented at the
March meeting. q

Springfield District Democrats are proud
and excited that we elected Eileen Filler-
Corn as delegate for the 41st District! Our
sincerest thanks go out to those dedicated
volunteers from all over the county who
helped us reach our voters. Any one of you
may have convinced those final, critical 38
voters to support Eileen and this victory
belongs to you as well.
Springfield’s volunteers (and voters) will
take a brief and well-deserved rest after two
special election victories this year and then
will turn their attention to this fall’s critical
congressional races. We look forward to an
exciting Democratic primary contest in the
10th District. In the 11th District, we know
that we will face a formidable Republican
challenger. We look forward to taking our
positive messages to the voters this year.
And after the nonstop campaigning and
elections of the past few months, we’re very
happy to have eight whole months until our

Tuesday, March 2 was Election Day as
well as the Sully Democratic Committee
meeting so it was a very busy day for us.
We would like to extend congratulations
to Eileen and Sandy and say how happy
we were to participate in those elections.
Sully volunteers adopted Terra District and
canvassed, made phone calls, and helped in
closing the polls.
After the election we held our monthly
meeting and the main portion was devoted
to the candidates from the 10th Congres-
sional District. Rich Anthony and Jeff
Barnett each gave a short introduction and
then participated in a question and answer
session. A lot of great questions were asked
providing a better understanding of the
candidates and how they will go about
taking on Frank Wolfe in the 10th.There
will be a primary on June 8.
We were visited by three George Mason
University students attending on assign-
ment from a government class. It’s always
good to see young people involved in the
process. The business part of our meeting
was fairly short - minutes and treasurer’s
report and a couple of committee reports.

is essential to the success of the group and

This report goes in on March 9, so the
March meeting and the J.J. dinner will
be over. Hope I saw you there! As was
mentioned last month, the Democratic
Party of Virginia set up a Strategic Plan-
ning Committee to reevaluate the DPVA
as a whole and create a plan for DPVA to
move forward. The Committee is currently
at the brainstorming stage and has met via
conference call and in person. The Com-
mittee is preparing a plan to be presented to
steering and S.C.C. at the summer meeting
in Newport News. Delegate Scott Surovell
sent me information on some of his bills.
He and 31 other legislators who have Route

1 in their districts met with the governor
and secretary of transportation to amend
HB 530 designating Route 1 as “Historic
Route 1.” Scott’s HB 831 goes to the full
senate after the senate finance committee
voted it out unanimously. The bill requires
out of state corporations to register with
the State Corporation Commission before
bidding on a state procurement contract.

is getting petitions signed and in the office
by March 23 and recruiting new support-
ers. Jim spoke at a news conference on
Capitol Hill on March 3 regarding repeal
of the U.S. Military’s “Don’t Ask Don’t
Tell” policy. He noted that from 2003 –
2006, the military allowed 4,230 convicted
felons to enlist under the “moral waivers”
program – while at the same time discharg-
ing almost 3,000 soldiers through DADT.
Women make up 15 percent of the armed
forces but accounted for over one-third of
discharges under DADT – pointing to an
inherent bias in the law’s implementation.
Also, 24 other countries, including Austra-
lia, Israel, Great Britain, and Canada have
shown open service to have no adverse ef-
fect on enrollment or retention. q

On February 28 , the Tenth Congressio-
nal District Democratic Committee met in
Fairfax County at the Sully Governmental
Center and voted to hold a primary on June
8 as its method of nomination for a candidate
for congress. To date, there are several po-
tential candidates who h must file formally
with the 10th CD chair, Sam Crockett, by

5 PM on April 9.
Members previously appointed to the
State Party’s Strategic Planning Committee
are Gerry Welch of Fairfax (Hunter Mill)
and E.J. Scott of the City of Manassas/
Manassas Park.
In other news, the 10th CD will have a
table at the state JJ Dinner on March 20.

be held at the Balch Library in Leesburg on
