DYNAMICS OF RIGID BODIES

KINEMATICS OF RECTILINEAR TRANSLATION

Part 1

4. The motion of a particle is given by the equation

where s is in feet and t in seconds. Compute the values of v

and a when t =4sec.

Name: ____________________________________________
1. A forklift truck lifts a pallet 1.5 m off the floor, moves 8 m
ahead, and sets the pallet on a stack 1 m high. Determine
the displacement of the pallet and the distance it has
travelled.

2. An automobile travels on a straight road for 30 miles at

50 miles per hour. It then reverses direction and returns to
the starting point at 75 miles per hour. A) What is the
average speed of the automobile during this 60-mile trip? B)
What is the average velocity?

5. A truck accelerates uniformly in one direction from an

initial velocity of 2.5 m/s (point A) to a final velocity of 9
m/s at point B. This velocity is maintained for 15 seconds to
2
reach point C. It is then braked uniformly at 0.8 m/s to
come to rest at point D. If the total displacement from A to
D is 250 m, determine (a) the acceleration rate from A to B
and (b) the total time from A to D.

3. An automobile accelerating at a constant rate of 1.6 ft/s

traveled a distance of 1400 ft in 40 sec. Determine a) its
initial velocity, b) its final velocity, c) the distance traveled
after 20 sec.

6. At a certain instant, two cars A and B, are 600 m apart. At

this instant, A has a speed of 24 kph and accelerating at 0.90
2
m/s , while B is moving towards A with a speed of 48 kph
2
and accelerating at 0.60 m/s . Find when they will meet and
the distance each has traveled when they meet.

7. Suppose that a person unwisely drives at 75 mph in a 35mph zone and passes a police car going 50 mph in the same
direction. If the police officer begins constant acceleration
at the instant they are passed and increased their velocity to
80 mph in 4 seconds, how long will it take them to be even
with the pursued car?

9. Two automobiles A and B are traveling in the same

direction in adjacent highway lanes. Automobile B is
stopped when it is passed by A, which travels at a constant
speed of 16 mph. Two seconds later, automobile B starts
2
and accelerates at a constant rate of 3 ft/s . Determine (a)
when and where B will overtake A, (b) the speed of B at that
time.

10. At t=0, a motorist traveling at 100 kph sees a deer

standing in the road 100 m ahead. After a reaction time of
0.3 sec, he applies the brake and decelerates at a constant
rate of 4.5 m/s. If the deer takes 5 seconds from t=0 to react
and leave the road, does the motorist miss it?

8. A speeding car traveling 65 mph in a 45-mph zone passes

a police officer pulled over at the side of the road. 3.50
seconds after the speeding car passes the cop car, the
2
officer begins accelerating at 2.50 m/s . What is the speed of
the police officer when it overtakes the speeding car?
