Genre Assignment

I have selected the chemistry lab reports that I have to do prior to completing my Chemistry
1251 Lab course. In order for me to be able to accomplish this task, a demand for knowledge in
chemistry is required and the need to understand the material greatly rises after each class. My
genre, chemistry lab reports, are used primarily in the reproduction of designed experiments that
have been done and recorded data to, reproduce the results to increase reliability. Usually, chemistry
lab reports are used throughout schools and colleges/universities, however, anyone wishing to
develop their chemistry skills can do so by looking at someones lab report and replicating the steps
needed in creating and doing the experiment. The interaction that this genre accomplishes is
describing chemistry so that others can do exactly what was performed previously by yourself or
someone else. The subject that this genre discusses is the subject of chemistry, whether it be
general chemistry, organic chemistry, or inorganic chemistry, all of these require lab reports to be
able to have their experiments replicated in future years. In creating these, students teachers and
anyone interested in learning about a specific chemistry lab experiment can learn based on others
work. Chemists, student, teachers, and many other people use this genre to do what others would
like to do. By creating this genre, people can see what is happening step by step during a specific
experiment and see the objectives, procedures, and results of the experiment. The role of this genre,
chemistry lab reports, suggests for participants the capability to participate and do the experiments

that have been written and can be replicated easily or ones that may be rather difficult. This genre is
practiced worldwide and is widely known among the scientific field of chemistry as well as other
departments that have their own lab reports for their specific experiments.

In order to describe a lab report, terms should be needed to know prior to reading a specific
lab report. Objectives, procedure and steps, results, will all have detailed information that go in depth
of what is being done in an experiment. Approximately 7 pages is the length of a normal lab report
for general chemistry lab reports at the University of Charlotte courses. Within these reports,
information will be stated about previous knowledge and theories described and needed to complete
the experiment to a high standard. Diagrams and graphs showing results and conclusions will be put
into these reports that have to be created. Passive voice is usually used in all of these reports.
