Joel Judkins
Objective:
Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work together)
Find, scan and import a high-quality image.
Create a full-bleed design.
Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and audience.
Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobe programs,
including Photoshop.
Process:
I began the process of making this flier by scanning an image at, I believe, 150ppi. I
then opened a Word document and placed my scanned image in it. I used the crop tool
to crop off a little of the bottom part of my image and placed the title above it. I wanted
the title to be clear and stand out against the white. The other elements were put where
they seemed balanced. The principle of repetition was used in my flier in a few ways.
The title of my flier repeats the letter A three times, my image looks repetitive, and I
repeated a line like the one in the image at the bottom of my flier.

Brochure.
Description:
This a brochure for a bed and breakfast located in southern France.
Programs Used:
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe InDesign
Adobe Photoshop
Date:

Joel Judkins
Objective:
Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.
Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure.
Incorporate quality images. Incorporate at least four quality images, not including the
logo. One should be clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the text
follows the cutout shape of the image.
Write at least 250 words of original copy in at least three paragraphs, headers,
and subheaders.
Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.
Process:
For this brochure, I first began making a layout in InDesign. I then added the doors and
lavender field photo. I then created my logo in Adobe Illustrator. I added text to my
brochure and then began adding more photos. I found an image of a chef, and brought
it into Adobe Photoshop, from there I used the quick selection tool to cut him out of the
background. I then used the text wrap tool to make the text go around him. I added two
more photos and made boxes behind some of my text. I used the principle of contrast,
and flow in my brochure by using contrasting colors, and fonts. I implemented flow by
using lavender in a photo and in my logo and also by using the same color scheme on
the back of my brochure thats in the front.

Flier.

Objective:
Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.
Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.
Retrieve image and logo from links on this page.
Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links in
InDesign intact.

Process:
To design this flier I used Adobe InDesign. I began my layout with the title and image,
and everything fell into place around it. If people are going to see a flier from far away,
its not the body copy thats going to grab their attention but the title and image more
so. I implemented principles of design by using contrast. There are two contrasting
fonts, and different font sizes to make more important information stand out. I used the
rectangle shape tool to create repetition (using the Rule of Odds) to draw attention up
to the title and the date, time and place.

Logos.
Description:
These are three logos for a bakery in Chicago.
Programs Used:
Adobe Illustrator
Date:

Course/Instructor:
Comm130 Section 05
Joel Judkins
Objective:
Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personal image that
will appeal to the audience. Do not imitate existing logos or use previous designs.
Market research: gather opinions from at least ten people about which logo appeals most
to them.
Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos.
(No Illustrator pre-fabricated flares, symbols, etc.. No photos or live-tracing. You may
use an image or drawing as a guide to trace it with the pen/pencil, but delete the image
before submitting.)
Refine one logo with variations for color.
Process:
I first started this project in Adobe Illustrator. I began with a rounded rectangle tool to
start building layers on my cake. From there I knew I wanted this bakery to be in
Chicago, so I started implementing things from the flag and city. I put the name of the
bakery right in the middle. I made swags on the cake and decorations using elements of
the Chicago flag. I also made a little Sears tower to be the cake tower. I made the tower
with the rectangle tool and then used the shape builder tool to make it one shape. I think
that I used the pen tool for the swags on the cake.

Course/Instructor:

Joel Judkins
Objective:
Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign.
Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Do not imitate existing logos or
use previous designs. Dont use photos or live trace.
Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead.
Photos are okay on business card and letterhead as additional design elements.
Letterhead should be 8.5 x 11, full-bleed optional, but trim only .125. Business card
should be 3.5 x 2 and printed above center on a vertical page.
Apply typography rules, keeping small copy.
Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop shadows and plenty of white
space.
Include contact information: name, address, phone, website, and email on each piece.
Use periods, bullets, or spaces in phone number; no parentheses/ hyphens.
Process:
I first started my process out in Adobe Illustrator. Using the rounded rectangle and
shape builder tool, I made a three tiered cake. I decorated by using elements from the
Chicago flag, like the colors and the stars. I also used the rectangle tool to make a mini
version of the Sears tower to put on top of the cake. I then moved my project over to
InDesign. For my stationery I wanted my logo to be the only thing on the white space,
and then added my text, rotated it, and put it on the left hand side so that there was
more room to write on the actual page, and looked different. I also added a larger
version of the building on top of my cake and added transparency to it so that it would
be visible but wouldnt keep one from being able to read the text written over it.

Use periods, bullets, or spaces in phone number; no parentheses/ hyphens.
Process:
I used the logo that I created for my letterhead (which was made in Adobe Illustrator)
for my business card. I then opened InDesign and either made the dimensions for the
business card ahead of time or with the rectangle tool. For my business card I stayed
within the same color theme, added my logo and kept it simple by adding my info. I
made my names bigger than baking assistant for contrast. I also added two white
rectangles for the contact information to be able to stand out from the rest.

Joel Judkins
Objective:
Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal point and flow
Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual message
Learn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masks
Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple elements
Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the image
Apply typography principles (titles, quotes, events or scripturesyour choice)
Format type: Legibility; Small copy & Title with varying text size. Theme word(s)
Select good quality images
Process:
For this final project I found a high resolution image on Google using advanced search.
I then opened the image on Photoshop and opened and brought my image over from
another tab. I began by putting a mask on my second image and using 100% opacity to
mask the hard edges of the photo and the large open spaces I didnt want to use. I then
used a lower opacity to blend the images together. I used the principle of contrast by
changing the weight of some of my text and by using two different fonts.

Web Page.
Description:
This is a webpage to display a logo Ive created and the process that went into creating
the logo.
Programs Used:
Text Wrangler
Adobe Photoshop
Date:

Course/Instructor:
Comm130 Section 05
Joel Judkins
Objective:
Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page so the long side is 300 500
pixels.
Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a
target audience. (Minimum of 200 words. Include rationale for colors, appeal to target
audience, design skills, etc,)
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML. (Include all required tags Doctype
(provided), html, head, title, meta charset (provided), body, h1, h2, p, ol or ul
(with li tags), img, br, and a link to blog)
Acquire a working knowledge of CSS. (Customize the provided CSS provided to format the HTML to complement the logo design. Change at least the following: The h1
text color & h1 background color, font colors for the paragraphs & list items, the
background color, font families and add at least one css comment.)
Identify hex colors to match logo, using Photoshop color picker.
Open the HTML page in a web browser and capture a quality screen shot with .5 inch
margins for printing.
Process:
For this project I began with some html that my teacher gave me. I then changed it
to change my text, logo, and the placing of some of my text. I then opened my html
in Text Wrangler and linked it to CSS that my teacher gave me also. I used my basic
knowledge of CSS to make changes to the CSS. I used Photoshop to match elements of
my website to my logo. I implemented the principles of repetition, flow, contrast in my
web page by contrasting bold fonts with regular weighted fonts, as well as font sizes. I
used repetition my using two fonts repeated times. I implemented flow by having heading in the upper left which leads to the logo in the center and back to the left kind of like
a z.

20

Objective:
Learn basic photography skills.
Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then incorporate the colors into the layout.
Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.
Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for
NDE (non-destructive editing.)
Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.511 page layout.
Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop.
Print with full-bleed margins. Trim only 1/8 (0.125) from all four sides
Process:
I took this photo out in the apple orchard on campus. I uploaded my photo into
Photoshop and edited the levels, vibrance/saturation, selective color and sharpness.
I used the level tool to brighten up my photo because it was a little dark. I used the
sharpen tool to bring out some of the details in the forefront of the photo as well as
in the leaf. I grouped elements in odds and added contrast by using green, yellow and
lime together. I also used contrast by having my rectangles gradually get smaller.
