FLIER
COMMUNICATIONS ARTS 130-12
VISUAL MEDIA/Instructor Emily Kunz
Submitted: 10/3/2015
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This is a greyscale flier I created to advertise a leadership conference for
graduating seniors.

PROGRAMS:
Adobe InDesign CC 2015

OBJECTIVES:
Create an InDesign project folder with assigned image and logo. Create
necessary links to image and logo within flier document. Apply the
FOCUS design principles and use appropriate typography.

MESSAGE:
Leadership is a competitive edge for students who are going places.

DESIGN PROCESS:
I created 20 sketches by hand and chose my favorite idea to develop. I
chose to repeat elements of the geometric company logo for emphasis.
The colors of the flier are the colors of the logo and contrast light and
dark throughout the flier. I grouped text and created the overall design
to reserve white space and highlight the central message.
The grouping of shapes at the bottom evokes the edginess and precision
of being prepared for competition, along with the joy, excitement and
fulfillment of smooth sailing.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This is a full-bleed event ad I created to promote a fundraiser using
primarily word processing software and a scanner.

PROGRAMS:
Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2013, MS Word, 64-bit
Adobe Illustrator CC 2015
HP Office Jet Pro 8600 All-in-One Scanner

OBJECTIVES:
Create a full-bleed design using a color scheme and typefaces that
work for the message and audience. Learn and demonstrate the wide
range of design features in Word. Find, scan and import a high-quality
image. Comprehend image sizing in inches and pixels.

DESIGN PROCESS:
The process began with sketching four different layouts. My goal was
to design an ad that would draw viewers into the hike-a-thon idea and
ultimately the event itself. The image of the group hiking became the
focal point and the color scheme grew out of the fall scene and logo
from the sponsoring group.
The design features bars of color to create depth and movement. I
used tracking, kerning and leading to organize and display the text
effectively. The gridlines in Word were helpful for layout.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This is a full-bleed design using only Photoshop and an original high
resolution photograph I took at a florist shop, to communicate a
contemplative message.

PROGRAMS:
Nikon D3100 14.2 MP DSLR Digital Camera
Adobe Photoshop CC 2015

OBJECTIVES:
Choose a color scheme and take a photo to match those colors , then
incorporate the colors into the layout. Adjust image levels, saturation,
color balance and sharpness on separate layers in Photoshop for NDE
(non-destructive editing). Print with full-bleed margins.

MESSAGE:
The message conveys the parallels between growing plants in a garden
and growing the character and nature of our hearts. And invites the
viewer to consider the law of the harvest in becoming.

DESIGN PROCESS:
I determined my target audience to be college students and gardeners
and also a pleasing color scheme for those groups, with orange being a
trendy color. I manipulated the image to enhance the colors I wanted
to feature; a triadic color scheme of brick, lime and indigo. The design
elements of squares and stripes repeated the pattern of the tile floor.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This is a montage which combines two images and type to share a
spiritual message.

PROGRAMS:
Adobe Photoshop CC 2015
Adobe Illustrator CC 2015

OBJECTIVES:
Explore quality image sources online. Unify a layout with a consistent
theme and dominant spiritual message. Learn to blend images together
gradually, using masks.

DESIGN PROCESS:
My design flowed from an image that touched my heart. The strong
focal point is the moment of conversation between Christ and the
young man who seems on the move but without direction. The
contrasting Oldface and sans serif typefaces were chosen to convey that
eternal truth is contemporary and modern, for each individual in
their time.
The images are blended and feathered. I applied a canvas texturizer
effect to the image to make it more intriguing and surreal. To obscure
and capture the viewers attention long enough to make them think,
relate and make the message relevant to them.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Do market research and conduct client research. Then develop a
company logo to best communicate a brand. Choose a color scheme
and then modify the logo for greyscale and an inverse white-on-color
display.

PROGRAMS:
Adobe Illustrator CC 2015

OBJECTIVES:
Only use Illustrator to create and draw a logo. Make shapes and text
legible at one inch square.

DESIGN PROCESS:
The logo was created for a commercial real estate development firm.
The color scheme and symbolic shapes creating a skyline were created
with the target audience of developers, owners, architects and general
contractors in mind.
Illustrator tools used in the project included the pen and line tools,
shape builder, group, join and divide. Also the color palette color
themes and the character palette for refining typography, like kerning,
tracking and leading.

BUSINESS CARD

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Part 1 Business Card
This project required an original logo design be used as the basis of
company stationery. Specifically, a coordinating business card and
letterhead

PROGRAMS:
Adobe Illustrator CC 2015
Adobe InDesign CC 2015

OBJECTIVES:
Use the new logo to create consistent layouts for company stationery.
Include necessary information while simply communicating the
company purpose and persona.

MESSAGE:
These designs advertise a yarn shop that welcomes happy knitters
and emphasizes simplicity, unique needs and individual creativity,
communicated through the play-on-words in the business name, ewe
and you.

DESIGN PROCESS:
I sampled myself for the design ideas for this project, as ewe yarns
Yarn Shop is a business I dream of owning. The logo is meant to feel
friendly and happy. I imported motifs from online sources for two
symbols identified with knitting, the yarn ball and a lamb. Using the
pen tool, clipping masks, opacity controls, layers and color palettes, I
modified and combined the elements to achieve the finished logo.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Part 2 Letterhead
This project required an original logo design be used as the basis of
company stationery. Specifically, a coordinating business card and
letterhead

PROGRAMS:
Adobe Illustrator CC 2015
Adobe InDesign CC 2015

OBJECTIVES:
Use the new logo to create consistent layouts for company stationery.
Include necessary information while simply communicating the
company purpose and persona.

DESIGN PROCESS:
Of note is the fun design element used as a watermark in all three parts
of this project, the letterhead, business card and webpage. That is the
string of yarn which forms the shape of a heart.
It is prominent on the back of the business card, as a type path for
the personal contact information at the bottom of the letterhead and
as a watermark connecting the top and bottom halves of the logo
description on the webpage which follows. The webpage was built to
showcase the newly created company logo.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Build a webpage to showcase the design process used in creating the
original logo for the stationery project.

PROGRAMS:
Notepad++ v6.7.3 Source Code Editor
HTML5 and CSS
W3C HTML and CSS Validation Service
Filezilla 3.14.1 File Transfer Protocol
WebFaction Web Hosting for Developers

OBJECTIVES:
Practice HTML and CSS web programming. Size and optimize and
original logo for web display. Write web content to describe the logo
creation process.

DESIGN PROCESS:
I created two code files in Notepad++ using HTML and CSS. I
validated the code online at W3C. I used FTP to upload the files to my
web hosting site at WebFaction so the webpage could be viewed live
online. http://bit.do/P7BetseyDelorey
The logo is the focal point. The color scheme is consistent throughout
the page and stationery project, as well as the typefaces and the string of
yarn design element. A lot of information, readable as a bulleted list.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This full-color, folding brochure was designed to promote a business
and their service. An offset layout was used.

PROGRAMS:
Adobe Photoshop CC 2015
Adobe Illustrator CC 2015
Adobe InDesign CC 2015

OBJECTIVES:
Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. Create a new, original
logo and original copy for the brochure. Manipulate images using
clipping masks and cutouts and then textwrap. Print in duplex color.

DESIGN PROCESS:
I began my design doing online research into the ballooning business
in my area and becoming familiar with their procedures, policies
and services. Next I collected exciting, colorful images. They lent
themselves to creating interest without much manipulation. But
textwrapping around the cutout balloon envelope was effective.
Rounding the corners of image via clipping masks made for a smooth
consistent feel from front to back.
The offset layout invites you to look inside. All the necessary
information is easily accessible, broken up with contrasting headings,
then into sections and paragraphs. The design leverages all available
space to connect with prospective customers while maintaining
adequate white space.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Practice a key principle of the FOCUS design process, Gestalt. It means
to unify the parts to create a greater whole.

PROGRAMS:
Adobe Illustrator CC 2015

OBJECTIVES:
An exercise to start seeing things in a new way. Pick a shape and use it
repeatedly to build an illustration.

DESIGN PROCESS:
The second week of the semester, I started this project using squares to
draw the building across the street from where I live. Then I expanded
to include rectangles and finally allowed myself any four-sided shape.
My imagination got carried away and there appeared in my drawing the
power plant that is nearby...exploding!
Gestalt is about how everything is more impactful in a cohesive group.
This is not just a design principle, but a life lesson. Sometimes we cant
see the forest for the trees. We get caught up in minutiae. We were
taught to apply the squint test in design, to see and understand what
all the elements can achieve when properly fitted together.
Gestalt is to visual media as the Gospel of Jesus Christ is to life. They
work together to help us connect and unify...then know, do, become.
The whole is greater than the sum of its parts...just rings true.
