Punch Capsules

Weigh Capsule on Torsion balance

If you using a torsion balance part the weigh ensure that the
balance is clean, level on zero
Then place an empty capsule shell of the same size you are
using to punch the capsule on the left hand pan of the
balance, and dial in the selected weight for the content of
your capsule.

Richie A. I. Chandra

Should the weight for the content of your capsule be less

than the selected target weight, as indicate in this slide, then
lock the torsion balance and remove the capsule from the
weighing pan
Then separate cap from the body oh this capsule, punch a
more powder into the body of the capsule slightly recaps then
reweight

Richie A. I. Chandra

Should the weight for the content of your capsule be more

than the selected target weight, as indicate in this slide, then
lock the torsion balance and remove the capsule from the
weighing pan
Once again separate cap from the body oh this capsule, this
time empty a small amount of the powder from the body of
the capsule slightly recaps then reweight
Continue this process of adding and removing powder from
each capsule into the pointer align with the sign of marking
on the scale as indicated here, indicating that the target
weight has been attained
Richie A. I. Chandra

Weigh Capsule on Digital balance

If you using a electronic balance part the weight as with the
torsion balance ensure that the balance is clean and level
Then place a small weighboard and the single gelatin
capsule of the same size you are using to punch the capsule
on the weighing surface
Then tare the balance
Remove the empty gelatin capsule from the weighboard and
replace with the punch capsule
Richie A. I. Chandra

Should the content of the capsule weight less than desire

target weight, then remove the capsule from the scale.
Remove the caps of the capsule from the body, punch in
more powder, gently recap then reweight

Richie A. I. Chandra

Should the content of the capsule weight more than desire

target weight, again remove the capsule from the scale.
Remove the caps of the capsule from the body, empty out
some of the powder from body of the capsule, gently recap
then reweight
Continue this process of adding and removing powder from
the capsule until the desired weight is attained

Richie A. I. Chandra

Continue punching all capsules

Continue punching and weighing each individual capsule until
all of the capsule have been prepared
Inspect the final capsule for esthetic appearance and polish
them using a clean wipe if necessary
Finally packed the capsule into properly size prescription
container to be labeled an dispensed

Compounding Suspension

Richie A. I. Chandra, S.Farm., M.Sc., Apt

Introduction
Suspension (USP) :
Liquid preparation consist of solid particle disperse to liquid
phase in which the particles are not soluble.

R/ HCT
25mg/5mL
Methylcellulose q.s
m.f suspension 60 mL
Sig 5 mL per NG tube b I d
E. S Clyde, MD
Refill 11 times
Richie A. I. Chandra

Calculation
Since the prescription instruct to prepare 60mL of suspension
at concentration of 25mg/5mL, we can easily calculate the
amount of HCT required for the prescription to be 300mg
Weigh the recommended suspending agent, 1,5 2%
Finnaly, by selecting sodium benzoate as a preservative at
concentration 0,2%, we can calculate 1,2 g of sodium
benzoate would be needed

Richie A. I. Chandra

Mixing
Selecting to use comercially available 50 mg HCT, we can
again easily determine that 6 of 50 mg tablet would be
necessary to prepare the prescription
Combine the sodium benzoate and methylcellulose with HCT
powder residing in the mortar

Richie A. I. Chandra

1. Obtain HCT Tablet

a. The first step in the procedure is to obtain six 50 mg HCT
tablet
b. These tablet would then added to mortar

2. Crush tablet using trituration

The tablet then crush using trituration until a very fine powder

Richie A. I. Chandra

3. Weighing suspending agent

a. The next step is to accurately weigh 120 mg of
preservative, sodium benzoate
b. Then we must weigh the recommended suspending agent,
Citrucel in this example is 2g for 60 mL of suspension
4. Geomtrically mix powder ingredients
Next combine the sodium benzoat and citrucel with the crush
HCT powder residing the mortar, mix until uniform,
homogenous.
Richie A. I. Chandra

5. Form primary suspension

In this point, gradually add approximately 40 mL of purified
water to the mixture

6. Transfer the suspension to the bottle

Now transfer these
prescription bottle

primary

suspension

into

60mL

Richie A. I. Chandra

7, Rinse mortar with purified water

a. Using a small amount of purified water, rinse the mortar
throughly with channel trituration in order to retrieve any
residue product remaining in the mortar
b. Then transfer the rinsing to the prescription bottle
c. Use purified water to qs the product to the 60 mL mark on
the prescription bottle

Richie A. I. Chandra

8. Cap bottle and shake vigorously

a. Cap the prescription bottle seecurely
b. Shake vigorously to ensure that the suspension is
completely mixed
c. The prescription is now ready to be labeled and dispensed
