RECIPES
From The Stillroom
Women as healers and care-givers for their families and communities
pre-dates written history. From time immemorial women were expected
to give birth, nurture, heal, protect, provide for, and spend their days
steeped in the tradition of the wise women before them; caring for
themselves and their families and, quite often, the entire community.
The skills a woman brought to her marriage would very well determine
whether or not that family would live in comfort, have enough to eat,
stay well, and prosper.
The things we have come to accept as the comforts and necessities of
life were placed entirely in the realm of womanly arts. The womans arts
reached their peak during the late middle ages till the early part of the
last century, in the time of the stillroom.
The stillroom was a room separate from the kitchen but usually within
close proximity which contained a still. Unlike the large outdoor stills
used for making alcoholic beverages, the stillroom was a smaller and
simpler version used to distill herbs and to extract their essence for use
in medication, cosmetics, salves and many other household uses.

RECIPES
From The Stillroom
The stillroom was perhaps the most important room in a home
The stillroom recipe book was passed down from mother to daughter
and training in the stillroom arts had direct relation to the value a young
girl could bring to a marriage.
Everything that sustained and added quality of life to the family might
be found in the stillroom recipe book.
Today, with the increasing interest in aromatherapy, essential oils and
other natural forms of health care, the arts of the stillroom are again
gaining recognition and are truly the birthright of every woman.
Whenever you make a simple recipe, scent a homemade candle, enjoy
a potpourri from your own herb garden, make an herbal vinegar or
preserve food, you are participating in the preservation of the tradition
of womans arts and the legacy from the long forgotten stillroom.

General Precautions
Only purchase Essential Oils from a reputable company that provides a lot
number, batch number, and tamper-proof lid on each oil.
Only use high quality Essential Oils identified by the botanical name and
chemical variety (ct chemo-type) of the oil where appropriate.
For example, Thymus vulgaris is the botanical name for Thyme. There
are two different chemo-types of Thyme commonly sold. Thyme ct. thymol
contains phenols and is an irritant to the skin and large amounts are liver
toxic which makes it inappropriate for children, the elderly, or those who
have liver diseases. The other is Thyme ct. linalool which is non-toxic and
non-irritating and is very useful for children.
Keep all Essential Oils away from children, with the caps securely
tightened.
Do not expose Essential Oils to heat, light, or air. Replacing the caps as
soon as you finish with the bottle will help to extend the life of your oils.
Unnecessary exposure to the air will cause the oils to oxidize and spoil.

Internal Use
Never take Essential Oils by mouth unless under the guidance of a suitably
qualified practitioner, working in cooperation with your doctor.
Follow suggested usage guidelines.
Do not attempt to exceed suggested usage guidelines unless under the
care of a qualified aromatherapist.

Nasal Application
The mucus membranes of the nasal passages are known to readily absorb
whatever is placed inside, such as the nasal sprays used to administer
certain prescription medications. Care must be taken when using this
method of application with Essential Oils.
As reported by Penny Price, serious though non-fatal toxicity in children has
been reported when applying or injecting Peppermint and/or Eucalyptus
Globulus inside the nose.
Many professional aromatherapists recommend against instilling Essential
Oils into the noses of children under age of six.
Dermal Irritation
If a person is subect to allergies, patch testing is advisable. Should an
irritation occur, apply carrier oil to the area to dilute the Essential Oil and
stop the irritation. Do not wash the area as water will enhance the irritation.
In children under six years of age, avoid Essential Oils known to cause skin
irritation or photo-toxicity.
With the exception of Lavender Fine, Lavender Vera, Tea Tree, and
Ravensara on the soles of the feet, all Essential Oils should be diluted
when used on children or the elderly.

Peppermint Cautions
Do not use Peppermint Essential Oil on children under three years of age.
The menthol can, in rare cases, cause a breathing spasm.
Peppermint Essential Oil is not recommended for those who are suffering
from atrial fibrillation for the same reason.
If you are taking homeopathic remedies, all Essential Oil treatments must
be given at least one hour apart to prevent interference. When using
Peppermint, homeopathic and Essential Oil treatment should be spaced at
least two to three hours apart.
Peppermint stays on your fingers long after you have washed your hands
and you could rub it into your eyes. Always apply Essential Oils with the
little finger as it is least likely to get into your eye.

Not all Essential Oils are suitable for infants and children. Use only as directed,
and when in doubt consult a qualified aromatherapist.

Aromatic Emotions...
How often has the aroma of a freshly baked pizza instantly lifted your spirits?
Think back to the last time you inhaled the aroma of cookies in the oven. If you
pay close attention youll notice your body instantly start to relax. Does the smell
of a hospital or the aroma in a doctors office set your heart racing or your palms
sweating?
The Aromatic Emotions stored in each of our brains are as different from each
other as the experiences we had when we first inhaled the aroma. This is part of
the reason why not everyone likes the same smells.
When you think about the good times and, yes, the bad times too, you will realize
that they each have an aroma attached to them. Our memories dont decide to
keep only the good things that occur in our lives. Our body, specifically the limbic
system in our brain, stores all of our memories, and with them, the aromas that
were present at that time.

Int J Nurs Pract. 1998 Jun ;4 (2):70-83 9748936 Cit:9 New approaches to
health and well-being for dementia day-care clients, family carers and daycare staff. K Kilstoff, L Chenoweth
Faculty of Nursing, University of Technology, Sydney, Australia. Kathy.
Kilstoff@uts.edu.au
This study was conducted in one multicultural dementia day-care centre
over a period of 18 months. It introduced a gentle hand treatment for clients
using three essential oils.
The study evolved out of the process of action research where the family
carers and day-care staff participated with the researchers to choose,
design, develop and evaluate a hand treatment programme. Data was
collected through in-depth interviews pre- and post-treatment, focus group
discussions, client observation logbooks and a disability scale.
The findings indicate a positive strengthening of the relationship between
the person with dementia and their family carer, and an improvement in
feelings of health and well-being for both. The specific improvements for
clients include increased alertness, self-hygiene, contentment, initiation of
toileting, sleeping at night and reduced levels of agitation, withdrawal and
wandering.
Family carers have reported less distress, improved sleeping patterns
and feelings of calm. They also found the treatment useful in helping them
manage the difficult behaviours exhibited by their relative with dementia.
The benefits of this treatment for nursing practice are that it is safe,
effective and easily administered by staff in any setting.
