Year 8: Biology

Assessment Task 2
Body Systems Model Presentation

INTRODUCTION
This Assessment Task requires you to create a model of a Human System which you have studied this year and
presents the work in the form of an Explain Everything movie. Students are encouraged to include material gathered
during classwork as well. The movie is about ONE of the following systems
Respiratory System
Cardiovascular System
Urinary System
Digestive System
The purpose of the task is threefold:
1. it will allow you to develop a deeper, clearer understanding of how something that is highly important to you
functions.
2. it will allow you to demonstrate what you have learnt and how well you have understood this part of the Science
Curriculum.
3. it will provide you with an opportunity to share your knowledge with another person.
The model does not have to be an exact replica of the system.
Movie GUIDELINES: Your movie must include:
Respiratory System
Cardiovascular System
Excretory System
Heart (+ internal atria,
Kidneys (+ internal, pelvis,
Nasal passage
ventricles, septum, valves)
medulla and cortex)
Trachea
Aorta
Renal artery and vein
Lungs (+ internal)
Pulmonary arteries
Ureter
Bronchi
Pulmonary veins
Bladder
Bronchioles
Vena cava
Urethra
Alveoli
Pulmonary arteries& veins
a) show the relative position and size of relevant structures,
b) allow someone to view the internal structure of the highlighted organ
c) have all structures clearly labelled watch your spelling
d) you may add additional organs if you choose they must also be labelled

Digestive System
Mouth (+ salivary glands,
tongue)
Teeth
Oesophagus
Stomach
Small intestines (+ villi)
Large intestines
Gall bladder

Students are encouraged to use a variety of different materials. Examples of materials used for models in previous years
include uncooked pasta, string, rubber gloves, balloons, straws, plastic bottles, toothpicks and coloured paper.
PLANNING YOUR MOVIE
Students will be given some class time to work on the movie and to consider their choice of construction materials if
they are using a model. The model must be constructed at home. The movie will include photos only of the model.
LINKING in THEORY IN THE MOVIE
You must provide an explanation of the purpose or function of each structure in the movie. The explanations should be:
a) clear and concise
b) written for someone with little or no understanding of the system being presented, eg a child in Grade Prep
c) presented as oral explanations what each part does
BUILDING THE MODEL
Build your model at home for homework. The model can also be simple materials attached to poster paper. The
model would show
a) what the name of the part is
b) what materials were used to make it
c) the function of that part
The app Explain Everything is the ideal way to present this task.
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Check that you submit
A short film (about 3-5minutes) of you explaining your body system (you do not need to bring the model to school)
