Jacksonville. She was born January 20, 1929
in Greenville, SC and moved to Jacksonville in
1964 from Ocala, FL. Mrs. McEntire was pre-
deceased by her husband, John N. McEntire; a
son, John Robert McEntire; her sister, Caroline
Smith, and brothers, David E. Shirley and James
R. Shirley. Survivors include a daughter and son
in law, Shirley and Tony Jenkins of Jacksonville;

He was an ordained elder
in the Presbyterian Church
(USA) and a faithful member of First Presbyterian
Church of Fernandina Beach. Ken was a gradu-
ate of the University of Kentucky and served in
the U.S. Air Force from 1965 to 1971. He was a
captain and flew Huey helicopters with the 20th
Special Ops. He was a decorated Vietnam Vet-
eran, receiving the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and
Distinguished Flying Cross among others. More
recently he was in the cargo trailer business with
TransHaul of Douglas, GA. He was a proud and
dedicated member of the Patriot Guard Motorcy-
cle Club and held lifetime memberships with the
American Legion, VFW and the American Legion
Riders. He enjoyed golf and riding motorcycles
and had a passion for POW’s, MIA’s and helping
children. Ken was preceded in death by his moth-
er, Lula C. Jenkins, father, Belton H. Jenkins and
brother, Gregory M. Jenkins, of Tifton, GA. He
is survived by loved ones Selena Smith of Ame-
lia Island; Cynthia Jenkins of Douglas, cousins
Elaine West of Fairburn, GA., Philip R. Jenkins of
Northport, Marie Jackson of Manhattan, KS and
Tommy Carmichael of Tifton and many friends.
A memorial service will be held May 15 at 2 p.m.

great grandchildren, Blaine, Brett and Taylor;

Manicures and pedicures are healthy for men and women

The ancient people regarded long, polished and tinted fingernails as a
mark of distinction between aristocrats and commoners. Once considered
a luxury for few is now used by many; male and female. Manicures and
pedicures are the largest growth area in salon services today.
The word manicure is derived from the latin “manus” for hand and
“cura” for care. The word pedicure has its root in the latin “ped” for foot
which means the care for feet. The purpose of manicures and pedicures is
to improve the appearance and health of the hands and feet.
Beauty Fungi are vegetable parasites. Nail fungi may appear under the nail as a
cheesy, sticky residue. It progresses to a dry and crusty texture under the

between disorders which may be treated in the salon and those a physician
must treat. They should possess a thorough awareness of procedures in-

book of sanitation performance and frequency. Salon tools which must be
discarded after each use are orange wood sticks, emery boards and buffers.
Salons may not provide nail services for a client who has a nail fungus
or bacterial infection. We may remove an artificial nail covering to expose
the natural nail. Bacteria is “anaerobic.” This means it cannot survive in the
presence of oxygen.

healthy a good pedicure and manicure feels. You can skip the polish part!

Time for the “spring cleaning” of your investments

Spring is here — time to spruce up your house, get
rid of clutter and get things organized. But this year,
go beyond your home and yard when you do your
spring cleaning and look for ways to rejuvenate your

old, in with the new” approach just for the sake of

antee profits or protect against loss, it can help you
reduce the effects of volatility.
• Put things back in order. Over time, and inadvert-
ently, the spaces in your home
can get “out of balance.” Perhaps you have too
many chairs in one corner, your flat-screen television
is crowding out your family pictures, or your new desk
takes up too much space in your home office. With
some rearranging, however, you can usually get things
back in order. And the same need for rearrangement
may apply to your portfolio, which might have be-
come unbalanced with too much of one investment
and too little of another. This situation could under-
mine your financial strategy, especially if the imbal-
ance means you are taking on too much risk or, con-
versely, if your holdings have become too conservative
to provide the growth you need. So look for ways to
restore your portfolio to its proper balance — one that
reflects your risk tolerance, time horizon and long-
term goals.
By giving your portfolio an annual spring cleaning,
you can help make sure it reflects your current needs
and is positioned to help you make progress toward
your key financial objectives. And you won’t even have
to get near the dust cloths or furniture polish.

Kindergarten, first and second grade students at Hilliard Elementary
School enjoyed a visit from Ronald McDonald Thursday, March 26. His
energetic presentation centered around staying active through play and
sports. The local McDonald’s sponsored Ronald’s visit.
Callahan and the rest, as they say, is history.
“When I got into it, it was a boom and it was good from then on,” Walter said.
Jeff stresses that he wants the younger generation to realize the importance of the trucking
industry and to keep it alive.
“I’m just trying to keep turning the pages in another chapter,” he said.
Walter still comes to work a couple days a week. But Jeff operates the business.
When most people see large trucks on the road, they become annoyed with their size and
how slow they drive. But most people also do not know how much truckers contribute to our
society. Almost everything going to and from the stores and business they are sold in travels on
a truck at some point.
Around noon on Trucker’s Appreciation Day this year, Ron Davis of Front Porch Music sits
on his stool fiddling on his banjo, evoking a real front porch atmosphere as the men who have
been driving the roads sit down to relax and eat BBQ that can be smelled from a mile away.
They share similar stories and sometimes recognize each others voice from talking over their CB
radios on the road.
Eugene Williams is there for the food and good company and to purchase a new cable for
his radio.
“Oh, I come every year,” Williams said.
He has been driving trucks since he was in the military which he is retired from now.
Mooneyhan wants truckers to know they are appreciated. He holds the Truckers Apprecia-
tion Day once a year at his shop and has been doing so for the past five years. It includes free
food, entertainment and raffle prizes.
He said it started out as just a small hot dog stand. They ran out of food the first time. The
truckers loved it so much that he decided to make it into an event with a full meal.
“They appreciate us appreciating them,” Mooneyhan said.

The Resurrection signifies Jesus’ victory
over death. What is death? Death was the re-
sult of Adam’s sin: a curse which is not only
the cause of our own deaths, but the reason
why there are wars, economic woes and drug
abuse. Sin has corrupted everything. So when
we say Jesus died for our sins, we are saying he
took the full brunt of sin’s curse upon himself
to conquer it and to put human life on the
path to glory. Let me put it this way: we get
tangled in the joys and sorrows of this life be-
cause we live like this life is the only life there
is. But Jesus’ resurrection proves that there
is another life being offered that is far more
worthy of our attention. Forgive the negative
illustration, but his resurrection is like a nu-
clear explosion. The shockwave of his rising
on the third day is still spreading and can be
seen in countless marriages that have been
restored, addictions that have been broken,
and suffering that has been alleviated. Yes, all
of these things still exist in the world, but in
time they will not. Yes people still die, but
one day death will be no more. That is the
life Jesus promises all who put faith in him. It
is a life we can experience in seed form today
that is flourishing into life eternal, incorrupt-
ible and free of all the sorrows of this fallen
world. Imagine a life free of unemployment
woes, teen pregnancy and homelessness? That
is what the Resurrection is about and why
Christians should be working to alleviate suf-
fering today.
Because he lives today, we can have hope
for tomorrow, hope in any situation in this
life because we know there is a life to come
that will cause the grief of this world to melt
away. “He will wipe every tear from their eyes.

staggering seasons for corn crops = healthy garden
Q:   I want to stagger my corn plant-
ings so I will be able to harvest corn at
various times of the season.  I do not
want to have too much to handle at one
time. So, when is the last date I should
plant corn here in North Florida? ND
A:   I commend you for staggering planting
times in your home garden. It is a smart strat-
egy which will allow you to gather the harvest
at various times throughout the season with-
out being overloaded with too much at one
time. This will also allow time for canning or
freezing the produce in smaller increments so
it can be enjoyed all year long. The corn plant-
ing season here in North Florida goes through
the end of April, therefore you have plenty of
time to plant a few more rows of corn. Always
plant more than one row of corn.  Home gar-
dens should have 2-3 rows of corn.  Remem-
ber to plant the corn in such a way so it does
not cast a long shadow on other garden plants
needing full sun.  If possible, plant the veg-
etable rows so they slightly curve to discour-
age soil erosion.  It is important to rotate your
crops, which will discourage a strong build up
of insects and disease in any one planting area.
Planting the same crop year after year on the
same site will reduce the overall harvest and
quality of the produce. Several varieties do
well here such as Silver Queen, How Sweet It
Is, Sweet Ice, SweetRiser, and Early

requires going against the cultural norms of watering daily and cutting grass short.

landscape as we have had very
little success with it becom-
ing completely established
here.  The common mistakes
made with St. Augustinegrass
are often the same ones made
with Seashore paspalum.  Those
mistakes are watering too often, us-
ing high nitrogen fertilizers and mowing the
grass blades too short.  Any combination of
these cultural practices can cause the grass
to decline.  The best chance of obtaining
Seashore paspalum would be through a lo-
cal nursery, especially one which normally
the point in which the oxygen is completely
removed from around the root area. I sus-
pect this is exactly what happened to your
wax myrtle.  Too much water can displace
the oxygen and cause the plant to suffocate.
The best thing to do is redirect the moisture
to another area which will allow other choices
of plant material at the site.  Without altering
the accumulation of water I am afraid nothing
will succeed. Another possibility would be to
bring in more dirt and fill in the area. Either
way, the area will need to be altered if you
plan to put landscape plants on the site. There
are some possible choices if the site receives
occasional moisture.  A few wet site tolerant
plants are Oleander, Euonymus, Silverthorn,
White honeysuckle, River birch, Bald cypress,
Black gum, Lace bark, American Elm, Pindo
Palm, Needle palm, Red maple, Windmill
palm, Ligustrum, Tea Olive, Cast iron plant,
Tree Sparkleberry, and Oakleaf hydrangea.

The Pirates of Penzance is one of the most
beloved musicals of all time. Gilbert and Sul-
livan’s endearing tale of duty, friendship and
love has lasted for generations because of its
infectious music and universal appeal.
From the young Frederic and Mabel to the
charming and soft-hearted pirates, the char-
acters are engaging and, from first to last, the
play is witty and fun. The Pirates of Penzance is
truly timeless fun for all ages.
In this favorite Gilbert and Sullivan comic
opera, young Frederic was to be apprenticed
to a pilot, but his hard of hearing nurse mis-
takenly delivers him to pirates instead. A hap-
py ending is assured in this musical adventure
featuring pirates, police and fair maidens. The
dates are as follows: 8 p.m. April 8-10, 15-17,
22-24, 2 p.m. matinee April 18. Tickets prices
for adults are $17 and $10 for students.

The Island Chamber Singers, under the
direction of Jane Lindberg, will be perform-
ing selections from the world’s greatest operas
featuring tenor Jonathan Price and soprano
Kathy Kessler Price, formerly of the Wash-
ington National Opera Company. Works be-
ing presented include Verdi’s ‘Anvil Chorus’,
Bizet’s ‘March of the Toreador’, Wagner’s
‘Bridal Chorus’ and arias from Madame But-
terfly and The Merry Widow as well as an
Easter Hymn. The choir will be accompanied
by harp, organ, flute, cello, bass, timpani and
percussion.
This concert will have two performances
at the Amelia Plantation Chapel, 36 Bow-
man Road, on Friday, April 23 at 8 p.m. and
Sunday, April 25 at 3 p.m. An opening night
reception will be held at the Fellowship Hall
immediately following Friday evening’s per-
formance.
