The Pastors Corner

The Wilderness of Forgiveness
By Rev. Amy L. Gearhart
n this season of Lent, we are exploring through the sermon
Iseries,
How Can I Forgive? Already, there has been much
interest in the topic, as we dive deeply into the hurt, pain,
confusion and struggle of learning how to forgive. While
there are so many things that make us different from one
another, the experiences of love, hurt, loss and the struggle to
forgive bind us together as a human family.
Were diving deeply into the conversation about forgiveness
through a weekly Lenten study and Sunday School class, our
upcoming Forgiveness Retreat on Sat, March 14, and in our
Sunday services of worship. I hope youre finding many ways
to connect in this conversation, as well as inviting others to
come and learn with us!
The work of forgiveness is slow work. It can feel like a time
of wilderness: a place that feels foreign and unfamiliar to us.
It requires a patience with God and others and ourselves. It
takes waiting.
The Bible teaches us so much about being in those wilderness
and waiting times. As you find yourself in a season of
forgiveness, perhaps you can draw comfort from the prophet
Isaiah, as I do.

Isaiah 40:28-31:
Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary;
his understanding is unsearchable.
He gives power to the faint,
and strengthens the powerless.
Even youths will faint and be weary,
and the young will fall exhausted;
but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength,
they shall mount up with wings like eagles,
they shall run and not be weary,
they shall walk and not faint.
Waiting in the wilderness and doing the work of forgiveness is
holy work. And as we do it with God and one another, we are
drawn more closely toward the One who forgives our sins on
the cross.
Join us on the journey this Lent and this Sunday! See you in
worship!
