Room at the Inn is Coming to MUMC!
years ago, this congregation took a major leap of
Ffaith.iveTemperatures
were plummeting in the Winter season.
Homeless men and women would find themselves on the
streets on dangerously cold nights.Volunteers, staff and pastors
stepped up and opened the church for an emergency shelter
where people could sleep and be fed.
Since that Winter, Missouri UMC
has led in organizing a Winter
Overnight Shelter for the homeless
here in Columbia. The effort now
includes dozens of congregations
and community groups, partnership
with the city, support of MU
groups and students, and countless
other food, laundry, and coat
donors. By taking that initial leap of
faith and trusting Gods guidance in
serving the least of these in need
of emergency winter shelter, our
larger community has owned the concern for our homeless
and the much larger effort which now includes a three month
overnight shelter in these Winter months in four different
church buildings.
From Jan. 11-Feb. 1 and Feb. 15-22, Missouri UMC will be the
host church for Room at the Inn (RATI). Every night in these
weeks, from 7 p.m.-7 a.m., up to 50 homeless guests can find
shelter from the frigid cold temperatures. Through these
weeks, there will be volunteer teams that attend to one of
three tasks: setting up for the evening, staying through the night,
providing breakfast and transportation in the morning. While
MUMC folks can volunteer for any of these dates for one of

the task teams at the RATI website www.roomattheinncomo.org,

the specific week that MUMC will make up all the volunteer
teams will be Jan. 25-31. I hope youll visit the site and make
your reservation to serve on one of the task teams at a date
which works for you. Ill be observing Dr. Martin Luther King
Jr. day and his march for justice by serving at the RATI that
evening. When will be your time to serve?
Over five years of mission teaches us
a lot about how to do it even better.
Weve learned about the importance of
paid coordinators and site supervisors
to provide professionalism and
accountability. Weve learned how
important it is to employ security
personnel and train volunteers to keep
everyone, including our guests, safe.
Weve learned about providing sign up
opportunities online and assessing the
RATI spaces for accessibility and security.
Thanks to Connie Carpenter, Eric Hucker, Rich Hayton, Rev.
Larry Williams and so many others who have helped to
coordinate the MUMC participation in RATI this year. Ive
been so excited to learn that the Mexico, MO and Audrain
County region have launched their own RATI in their
area based on the wisdom and model of Columbia. Most
significantly, it is always a blessing to learn how lives are literally
saved and folks discover Gods unconditional love through the
ministry of RATI each year.
Be a part of this life changing ministry this year, and Ill look
forward to seeing you in worship on Sunday!

More than 20 volunteers from

several congregations gathered at
the PET Warehouse, 1908 Heriford
Rd., Friday morning, Jan. 2. The truck
arrived on time, 10 a.m., and by
noon they had the 40 ft sea going
container filled to the brim, ready
for delivery to Nicaragua. The load
included a large number of wheel
chairs, canes, and other medical
supplies plus school and office supplies, tools and tires, clothing, shoes,
toys, and more, all for use in the 111
remote rural villages where Rainbow
Network serves. Volunteers from
MUMC included Karl and Paul Schnase from Spark, Ted and Ellen
Pappas, Judy Parsons and Cleo Kottwitz. Cleo was especially
pleased with the 40 heavy duty tires purchased with a grant

roads. Judy and Cleo are planning to join a Rainbow Network
Go and See tour, April 8-12, and invite others to go along and
