Rugs, pillows, poufs and other accessories not only add

color and visual interest to furniture store vignettes, but also
present a great opportunity for add-on sales using minimal
extra floor space. Including accessories in the retail mix enables
sales associates to present a complete room package to end
consumers and help them to build a look that suits their specific
style needs. Those same customers are more likely to come
back to the store in the future to purchase additional accessories.
Furniture stores with accessory programs typically bring in
more revenue and experience higher customer satisfaction and
loyalty than retailers that focus only on selling furniture.

proper care, an outdoor rug can last several years for outdoor
use and even longer for indoor use.

OUTDOOR RUG PADS

Rug pads provide a durable, long-lasting foundation that will
extend the life of an outdoor rug. Designed to withstand the
elements, outdoor rug pads minimize rug movement, bunching
and slippage while slightly elevating the rug to promote faster
drying. They also provide cushioning when a rug is placed on
abrasive surfaces such as stone, concrete, tile and wood and help
to protect decks and patios from stains and discolorations.
SPECIAL FEATURES:

Polymer-coated polyester
Mold- and mildew-resistant
UV protection for maximum colorfastness

CARE AND MAINTENANCE

OF OUTDOOR products
Rugs
Area rugs are one of the easiest ways to freshen the look, color
and style of an outdoor living space. Designed to dry quickly,
resist fading, and clean easily, outdoor rugs generally require little
maintenance. However, general care is advised to keep these
rugs looking their best. Following are tips for extending the life
of an outdoor rug.

Clean the rug monthly. Mix a solution of dish soap and

lukewarm water in a bucket. Gently scrub the rug using
a large nylon brush, making sure to clean both sides
of the rug. Rinse the rug with a hosepreferably on a
sloped surface such as a driveway to enable the water to
easily drain away.
Dry the rug in sunlight to prevent mold. Hang the rug
over a porch railing in the sunlight or lay the rug out
in the sun, making sure to flip it over to ensure that both
sides dry thoroughly.
Should a spill occur, blot it with a dry cotton cloth as quickly
as possible to prevent a stain from setting in. Make sure to
wipe underneath the rug as well. If necessary, use a mixture
of dish soap and lukewarm water to remove the remainder
of the spill and then allow the area to dry.
As with outdoor furniture, outdoor rugs should be protected
during seasons when the outdoor space isnt being used.
Rugs that arent located in a covered space should be rolled
up and stored in a garage or other covered area until the
following season.
TIP: While outdoor rugs are designed to be mold- and mildew-resistant and withstand
direct sunlight, they will have a longer lifespan if kept away from direct sun exposure
or standing water.

Pillows and poufs

Proper care of outdoor pillows and poufs can lengthen product
lifespan. This can be accomplished by simply brushing off
dirt before it becomes embedded in the fabrics, wiping up spills
as soon as they occur or spot cleaning soon after stains occur.
Like outdoor furniture, outdoor pillows and poufs should be
covered or stored in a covered area during off seasons or in cases
of extended rainfall or inclement weather.
Following are tips for extending the life of outdoor pillows
and poufs.
Spot clean with dish soap and lukewarm water using a sponge
if there are any spots or stains. Rinse with clean water.
Always dry the pillow or pouf completely before using or
storing to prevent mildew formation. Dry in the sun, if possible,
making sure to flip the pillow/pouf over to ensure that both
sides dry thoroughly.

Lamps and other accessories

Outdoor lamps, mirrors and decorative accents are designed
to hold up to the elements. However, like all other outdoor
accessories, they should be placed in a covered area when not
in use for extended periods of time or during prolonged
rainfall or inclement weather.

Regularly shake out the rug to remove dust and dirt that may
have accumulated. Brooms and manual sweepers are also
an effective way to clean outdoor rugs.

Lamp Options
Surya currently offers more than 300 lamps in a variety of styles,
colors and price points. All products are UL approved. Available
lamp types include: table, accent, buffet, floor, bridge/swing arm
lamps and desk/task lamps.
Buffet lamps: Placed on buffet tables or consoles; usually have
a narrow base silhouette, often looking like a thin column or
candlestick, with a smallish shade; typically range in height from
32" to 36".
Table lamps: Lamps designed to sit on a side table; typically

range in height from 24" to 36". This is the most popular

lamp style.
Accent lamps: Smaller than table lamps and typically more

decorative; are most often 22" in height or less.

Table Lamps
Living Room: Place a table lamp on side tables next to the sofa
or chairs, or on a sofa table. The lamps dont have to match
but should be similar in size and scale.
Bedroom: Place a table lamp on nightstands on each side of
the bed. A table lamp that is 26" to 28" tall (base and shade
together) usually works well for bedroom use.
Entryway: Set an eye-catching table lamp on a table in the foyer
to make a dramatic statement when guests enter.

Its important to consider a table's height when selecting a lamp.

Shorter lamps generally look better on higher tables, and taller
ones on lower tables. As a general rule, a lamp should be no more
than 1 times the height of the table that it sits on, and the shade
shouldnt extend beyond the width of the table.

Floor lamps: Sit on the floor of a living space; two types

3-way and 6-way, which dictates the number of lighting levels;

typically range in height from 5' to 6'.
Bridge/Swing Arm Lamps: A type of lamp where the lamp
arm pivots for flexibility; the bridge portion hangs
over a space to offer direct light; typically floor lamps but
may also be table lamps.
Desk/Task Lamps: Functional lamps designed to aid in
performing specific tasks, such as reading, preparing food,
doing homework, working on hobbies, etc.; typically range
in height from 25" to 39".

Placement Suggestions by Lamp Type

Buffet Lamps
Living Room: Place a set of buffet lamps at both ends
of a console table.
Bedroom: Use a single buffet lamp on a short dresser.
Dining Room: Place a set of buffet lamps at both ends
of a buffet, sideboard or credenza.

Accent Lamps
Living Room: Place an accent lamp on a fireplace mantle or piano
to provide some extra illumination.
Bedroom: Set an accent lamp on a nightstand or high dresser
for subtle lighting.
Dining Room: Place an accent lamp on a buffet or sideboard to
augment existing room lighting.
Kitchen: Situate an accent lamp on a counter or bar to provide an

attractive light source when overhead lighting isnt being used.

Hallway/Entryway: Place an accent lamp on a hall table or foyer

table to add a bit of ambiance and a welcoming feel.

SURYA training manual | SPRING 2015

Floor Lamps
Living Room: When space is limited next to a sofa, use two

matching floor lamps to flank the sofa. Situate a floor

lamp behind an upholstered chair in the corner of a room
to provide reading light and additional illumination.

Materials
Bases

Bedroom: If the bedroom is small and limited space exists

for nightstands, place a floor lamp on each side of the
bed. Alternately, place a floor lamp next to a skirted table
displaying pictures and other items.
Hallway/Entryway: Place a floor lamp beside a chair located

in a foyer or next to a chest in a hallway to add height and

provide extra light.

in the office.

Desk/Task Lamps
Home Office: Place a desk lamp on the corner of a desk

to illuminate the workspace.

Shades and Light Intensity

The shades on Suryas lamps come in a range of colors
from light, natural hues to vibrant colors to darker hues.
Following are a few things to keep in mind regarding
lamp shade color and light intensity:
Light colored shades allow the maximum amount of light to
filter through into the surrounding environment, making
this type of shade ideal for brightening a room or performing
tasks such as reading.
A darker or opaque shade illuminates from ceiling to floor
rather than outward, making this type of shade a good choice
when looking to create mood or ambiance within a space.

Understanding the Customers Needs

Lamp components

Following are three questions that you should always ask

the customer:
Finial

Harp

Bulb
UL label
Socket
Switch
Saddle
Neck

For what purpose will the lighting be used?

Is there a preference for a particular style/color/finish?
What is the budget for the lighting purchase?
Not only will these questions engage the customer, but they will
also help to ensure that you guide the customer towards lighting
options that best meet their specific needs.

Design Considerations When

Purchasing Lamps
Decor Style: Is the decor style modern, transitional or
traditional? The lamp selected should complement
existing decor.
Prominence: Will the lamp be the focal point of the room?

If so, a good choice would be a lamp in a bold color or distinctive

style that will stand out among other decor items. If a more
subtle look is desired, a lamp with neutral tones and understated
design would be optimal.
Scale: Are the rooms furnishings substantial in size or are

Cord

FINIAL: A small finishing ornament that is attached to the top

of the harp; can be simple or ornate.

they smaller in scale? A lamp with a large ceramic base

and modern drum shade would balance a large love seat or
sectional sofa while a lamp with a slender base and shade
would work well on a delicate accent table.
Light Required: How much light is needed and where should
it be focused? Dark lamp shades don't typically allow much light
to filter through while lighter shades provide more diffusion.
A shade with a wider base will provide more light than a shade
with a narrower base.

HARP: The wire support that attaches at the socket and supports

the shade at the top of the lamp.

Surya Differentiators

BULB: Attaches to socket and provides illumination; Suryas

Lamp collection has been designed to coordinate with all

Surya product lines

lamps accept either a 75W, 100W or 150W bulb.

UL LABEL: Certifies that an electrical product has been tested
and complies with UL safety standards.
SOCKET: A threaded screw base used to hold and connect a light
bulb to a power source; most Surya lamps have one light socket,
while a few designs include two light sockets.

MATERIALS
Archival Ink: Archival ink is designed to resist fading caused

by exposure to light. Whereas dye-based inks absorb into

the substrate, archival ink is pigment-based and sits on top of
the substrate, making the ink more stable. As a result, the
ink is much less likely to fade or show color shifts, providing
significantly increased longevity.
UV-Curable Ink: UV-curable ink cures (dries) almost

immediately and is very durable for both indoor and outdoor

applications. This type of ink can print onto a large variety
of substrates, including wood, glass and acrylic panels.
Paper: Acid-free paper has been treated to neutralize
acid and has a PH level above 7 (neutral). Typically used
for museum applications, this type of paper holds ink
and colors well and resists yellowing and disintegration,
helping to extend art work life.
Canvas: Museum-grade canvas is a very durable canvas similar

to that found in museum applications. This type of canvas is

most often made of linen or cotton and features a tight weave,
making it ideal for photographic and fine art reproductions.
Acrylic: Digital Acrylic Panels (Optix DA) panels promote

strong ink-to-surface adhesion to provide excellent optical

clarity and vivid colors. Featuring a high gloss finish, acrylic
panels are highly durable and offer a contemporary look
and feel.
Metal: Aluminum is resistant to corrosion and abrasion and

will not fade, chip, peel, flake or rust. A brushed satin

finish provides deep, vibrant colors with exceptional detail
and resolution. Because the image is infused into the surface
rather than sitting on top of it, the art work takes on a
luminescent quality.
Wood: Birchwood provides a natural finish and pleasing warm

tones for a more. The wood grain is visible in the background

of the art work, adding subtle texture and visual interest along
with a vintage look and feel.

16

SURYA training manual | SPRING 2015

FRAMING STYLES
Gallery Wrapped Canvas: Gallery wrapping is used to describe

a style of framing where the canvas print is stretched so that

the sides of the image are wrapped around the frame, giving the
picture a 3-D feel.
Traditional Frame: Traditional frames provide a border that
the art work is set into, resulting in slight overlap of the
frames edges over the art work. Traditional frames are available
in a variety of materials, including wood, metal and acrylic.
Frame with Mat: In this framing style, a frame is accompanied
by a mata heavy cardboard-like material that sits within
the frame to give the artwork a finished look and additional
visual appeal.
Floater Frame: With floater frames, the art work is mounted
with a space between the frame and the canvas wrap so that
the print appears to be floating in the frame.
Mounted: Mounting is the technique used to secure art work
to a mount or display board, creating a frameless design
and a clean, modern look.

FRAME COMPONENTS
Acid-Free Matboard: Acid-free matboard has been treated

to neutralize acid compounds and has a PH level above 7

(neutral). This type of matboard is typically used in conjunction
with acid-free or archival paper to help preserve art work.
Canvas Stretcher Bars: Stretcher bars are pre-cut wooden
pieces that interlock to form the framework that a canvas
is pulled across (stretched onto). Stretcher bars help to create
an even, warp-free canvas surface.

Made to order

We understand that the purchase of an area rug is an investment.

Surya offers a sample for every rug design, eliminating the
need for our customers to stock inventory while simplifying the
rug selection process for consumers. Samples enable consumers
to clearly view the color, texture and pile height of a specific
rug prior to purchase, helping them to feel more confident in
their rug choice and minimizing the need for returns.

Craft by size rug program

18" Sample: Approximation of a 5' x 8' rug design.
6" Swatch: Provides an ideal way to assess rug color and texture.

Around 4,000 Surya rugs can be crafted by hand to any size

requirements. Samples are available for all rug designs, making
it easy to view color, pattern and texture for a specific rug prior
to placing a custom order.
The timeframe for production and delivery of a rug in the
Craft by Size program can vary, depending on the construction,
size and complexity of the design. More basic designs can
be delivered in as little as 3 months, while very intricate handknotted designs may require up to 8 months. Orders can
be expedited, when needed, to accommodate tight timeframes.

Rug construction guide

Hand-Knotted

und-2005

Hand-Tufted

MSRP*: $500 to $4,200

MSRP*: Premium $500 to $1,200; Standard $300 to $500

Manufacturing Time**: 5 to 9 months

Manufacturing Time**: 4 to 6 months

Hand-knotting is the most intricate, labor-intensive rug weaving

process in use today. A higher number of knots per square
inch typically translates to better quality. A complex pattern
can require very dense knotting and takes a long time to
produce. An average weaver can tie about 3,000 knots per day.

Generally less expensive and easier to construct than

hand-knotted rugs, hand-tufted rugs are made using
a hand-operated tool to punch strands of wool or other
fibers into canvas stretched on a frame. After tufting,
the rug is removed from the frame and a backing is applied.
Bindings may be attached to the edges of the rug to add
strength and prevent unraveling.

Durability: Longest lasting construction. Good ones can last

10 to 25 years. Great ones can last 100+ years.
Shedding: Sheds less than a typical hand-tufted rug.
How to identify: Individual knots are visible on the back

of hand-knotted rugs, making it possible to see the overall

pattern and colors used on the rugs surface. Weaving and
knots will be slightly uneven. The fringe of a hand-knotted
rug is an extension of the rugs foundation.

ath-5075

Durability: Lasts 3 to 10 years (5 to 10 years for Premium/

3 to 6 years for Standard), depending on use.
Shedding: Sheds initially, subsiding over time. Degree
of shedding depends on wool quality and rug density.
Less expensive hand-tufted rugs shed more than higher
end hand-tufted rugs.
How to identify: An adhesive is used to attach a canvas material

*MSRP is based on a 5' x 8' rug size.

**Manufacturing time on all rug construction types includes: spinning and dyeing wool,
weaving, finishing and transportation.

MSRP*: $200 to $800

Manufacturing Time**: 4 to 6 months

Hand-hooked rugs go through the same process as hand-tufted

rugs. Tufted rugs, however, have a cut pile surface, while
hooked rugs feature a looped pile surface. Often, rugs will
combine both techniques.

Hand-woven shag rugs are made on hand-operated looms with

hundreds of plush, twisted and slightly felted yarns. A team
of weavers uses a long steel rod to shoot the fibers across vertical
strings that run the length of the rug. Each fiber can be as
long as 6".

Durability: Lasts 3 to 10 years, depending on use.

Shedding: Sheds less than hand-tufted rugs, subsiding over time.
How to identify: Similar to hand-tufted rugs, an adhesive is used

to attach a canvas backing to the back of hand-hooked rugs

to hold the yarns together. The surface pile of a hand-hooked
rug will appear looped (rounded).

Durability: Lasts 2 to 8 years, depending on use.

Shedding (wool): Moderate shedding for an extended period,
subsiding over time.
Shedding (polyester): Minimal shedding
How to identify: Identifiable by a deep pile, giving it a shaggy

appearance. May or may not have a canvas backing.

Hand-Loomed Wool

MSRP*: $200 to $600

MSRP*: $200 to $600

Manufacturing Time**: 4 to 6 months

Manufacturing Time**: 4 to 5 months

Often referred to as dhurries or kilims, flatweave rugs

are woven on a loom, rather than knotted. They are
typically constructed from wool, cotton or synthetic materials.
In most cases, the pattern on the front of the rug can be
viewed clearly from both sides, making these rugs reversible.

Hand-loomed wool rugs are constructed on hand-operated

looms by a team of weavers who use a long steel rod to shoot
fibers across vertical strings that run the lengths of the rug.
In this construction, rugs can be all cut pile, cut-and-loop pile
or all loop pile. In some cases, the rug may be hand-carved
to accentuate texture and design.

Durability: Lasts 3 to 10 years, depending on use.

Shedding: Moderate shedding, subsiding over time.
Reversible: Can extend rug life by flipping the rug.
How to identify: Because they are woven rather than

knotted, flatweave rugs do not have a tufted pile, which gives

them their flat appearance when compared to other rug
constructions. The design of a flatweave rug typically appears
the same on the front as on the back.

Durability: Lasts 2 to 8 years, depending on use.

Shedding: Moderate shedding, subsiding over time. Degree
of shedding depends on wool quality and rug density. Less
expensive hand-loomed rugs will shed more than higher end
hand-loomed rugs.
How to identify: Low to medium pile. May or may not have

a canvas backing.

*MSRP is based on a 5' x 8' rug size.

Manufacturing Time**: 3 to 5 months

Machine-made rugs are produced by large machines that

have hundreds of spindles of fiber that are mechanically woven
into a thin mesh backing. The machine runs continuously to
optimize efficiency. A computer dictates the pattern, minimizing
the chance for error.

Indoor/outdoor rugs are made solely of synthetic fibers

including olefin, polyester, polypropylene and PVC (polyvinyl
chloride)that have been infused with UV inhibitors to
minimize fading. These rugs are mold- and mildew-resistant
and can withstand up to 500 hours of direct sunlight.

Durability: Lasts 2 to 6 years, depending on use.

Durability: Lasts 1 to 5 years for outdoor use and 2 to 8 years

for indoor use. Leaving the rug in direct sunlight or standing
water will significantly limit its life.

Shedding: Machine-made polyester rugs will not shed. Since

most rugs of this type are made from synthetic fibers, the
pile will crush with heavy traffic.

Shedding: None.

Manufacturing Time**: 4 to 5 months

Manufacturing Time**: 3 to 6 months

While not a true construction, natural (plant-based) fiber

rugs possess their own unique characteristics. They are
constructed of tightly woven fibers such as bamboo, cotton,
jute, linen, seagrass and sisal to create a casual and relaxed
look and feel. The fibers are often bleached or dyed to increase
design options and aesthetic appeal. It is important to keep
in mind that, as with other rugs, placing natural fiber rugs in
direct sunlight several hours a day can result in the fading of
dyed materials and gradual darkening of undyed fibers. Natural
fibers can be blended with other fibers to create a multitude
of design options.

Hair-on-Hide rugs are hand-crafted of natural hides to create

a myriad of designs. They may be dyed in a number of
colors, or the natural coloration may be used. Due to the innate
differences among hides, subtle variations in dye lot, color
and pattern can be expected. Brands and other markings add
character to hide rugsmaking each a one-of-a-kind piece
to create a truly authentic look.

Durability: Lasts 2 to 6 years, depending on use.

Durability: Lasts 5 to 10 years, depending on use.

About Rug Color

While the Surya catalog and website provide an excellent guide
for evaluating a rugs design and general appearance, samples
provide the best way to accurately evaluate color. Following
are some things to keep in mind when evaluating rug color:

It is important also to convey to consumers that handmade

rugs are made by artisans and are one-of-a-kind pieces. As
such, they may have subtle color variations due to the inherent
characteristics of natural fibers and dyes. If a customer is looking
for an exact color match, machine-made rugs are typically more
uniform from rug to rug.

Some fibers are more reflective than others and, depending on

the lighting in the room in which the rug will be placed,
the rug may appear lighter or darker than it does in product
photography. For example, a viscose rug will have more sheen
and light-reflective properties than a natural fiber rug, and
color may vary slightly when the rug is placed in
different environments.
A rugs colors can also vary depending on the angle at which
the rug is being viewed. For instance, when looking at one end
of the rug, you will see the flat surface of the fibers reflecting
light. From the opposite side, you will see the trimmed end of
the fibers, which reflect light in a very different way.
Surya uses the Pantone TPX color guide when assigning
colors to its products. Pantone TPX colors provide a
standard language that is understood by designers around
the world, helping to ensure consistency and accuracy
when referring to color.

und-2005

VIEW FROM LEFT: colors appear lighter due to reflection of light on viscose fibers

VIEW FROM RIGHT: color appears darker since light source is originating from other side of rug

Selecting proper rug size

CAN-2020

TIPS TO ENSURE PROPER SIZE SELECTION

One of the most common reasons that rugs are returned is
improper size selection. Choosing the correct rug size is essential
to filling a space properly and making the rug look the best
it can within a particular living area. It is important to note that
appropriate rug size should be determined based on furniture
configuration and not on room size alone.

5' x 8'
fal-1039

LIVING ROOM #1
Place the rug in front of the sofa. We recommend a rug that is
at least 5' x 8', or approximately the length of the sofa. If possible,
leave a few inches of exposed floor between the rug and sofa to
accent the furniture. When the rug is under a coffee table, make
sure the rug is large enough to rest under all four legs of the table.
FAL-1039

10' x 13'

LIVING ROOM #2

LIVING ROOM #3

Tuck the rug under the front legs of the sofa. The back legs
of the sofa can be situated on or off of the rug, depending
on personal preference. We suggest a rug that is 8' x 10' or larger.
The rule of thumb is to leave 18" to 24" between the wall and
rug, creating a border of exposed floor that frames the furniture

Caring for our products

COMMON rug CHARACTERISTICS

with the pile to the outside will help to expedite crease removal.

All of Suryas rugs are handmade by skilled artisans, or in a

specialty manufacturing facility, and are inspected to ensure
that they meet quality standards prior to shipment.

Odor

We stand behind our products 100 percent and will always

accept the return of defective merchandise. However, to avoid
unnecessary returns, there are common issues inherent in
area rugs that need to be explained to consumers when they are
purchasing a rug. The issues below are not considered defects
and, therefore, are not valid reasons for returning a product.

Color
No two handmade rugs are the same, which is part of their
intrinsic appeal. Slight color variations are common for
handmade rugs, as dye lots may change over a period of time.
For the same reason, a rugs color can vary slightly from
the color of the sample since the sample was created at an
earlier time. See page 33About Rug Colorfor additional
rug color considerations.

Shedding
All wool rugs will shed. Shedding will subside over time,
depending on traffic and wear. It typically takes 20 to 25
vacuums, at a minimum, to curtail shedding. Some rugs will
shed for the lifetime of the rug. Hand-knotted rugs will
shed less than hand-tufted rugs, and higher end hand-tufted
rugs will shed less than lower end hand-tufted rugs.

Sprouts
Loose fibers that extend from the top of the rug, or sprouts,
are a normal part of the break-in process of handmade
rugs. To remove sprouts, use a small pair of scissors to snip
them off even with the rug pile. Do not pull out fibers, as
this can cause the rug backing to deteriorate and cause gaps
in the rug.

Creases
If a rug has been rolled or folded for shipping, it may have
creases. Creases should disappear within a week or two when
the rug is laid out flat. Reverse rolling the rug overnight

Rugs recently removed from a bag may have an odor. Odors are
caused by dyes, yarns and shipping for long distances in sealed
wrap. Most odors dissipate within a week once the rug is removed
from the shipping wrap.

Fading
If exposed to direct sunlight, rug colors typically fade over time,
even if they are fade-resistant. On sunny days, it is recommended
to use window shades or curtains to reduce sun exposure. Rugs
in areas exposed to sunlight should be rotated at least every six
months to minimize fading.

Wear
As a general rule, rugs of all materials and constructions should
be rotated at least every six months to evenly distribute wear
and extend the life of the rug.

Care and maintenance of a rug

Rugs are one of the easiest ways to freshen the look, color and
style of a living space. Like any investment, a rug must be
cared for properly if it is to last. Following are tips for extending
rug life.

HOW TO VACUUM A RUG

Canister vacuums without beater bars are the optimal type
of vacuum to use on rugs. Brooms and manual sweepers
are also a gentle and effective way to clean rugs. Powerful
bagless vacuums are not recommended, as they use high
suction, which can pull out threads from the back of a rug
and create sprouts.
Use the hand-held attachment to vacuum a rug,
whenever possible.
If a hand-held attachment is not available, make sure to
turn off the vacuums beater bar, as it can pull fibers
from the face of the rug and cause the rug to fuzz. If the
beater bar cannot be turned off, set it on the highest
position possible before vacuuming.

SURYA training manual | SPRING 2015

37

If the rug has serged (finished) edges, refrain from continuously

running the vacuum over the edges, as this will loosen fibers
around the edges and cause them to deteriorate.
Avoid running the vacuum over the fringes at the ends of the
rug, as fraying may occur. Use the hand-held attachment to
clean the fringes.
If a rug is reversible, make sure to vacuum both sides. This will
remove grit and grime that can prematurely wear out the rug.

How to Clean a Rug

Clean spills immediately. Once a stain is set, it becomes much
more difficult to clean. Suryas Rug & Fabric Stain Remover
can help to eliminate many stubborn stains.
Never rub a spill, as this forces the spill deeper into the rug.
Instead, blot the stain with a clean white cloth.
For wool rugs, use lukewarm water to remove any residual
stain, as wool is more prone to bleeding and staining
than synthetic fibers.
Always use clean water to remove any remaining cleaner and
dry towels to absorb any residual moisture.

Professional Cleaning for a Handmade Rug

Always use a professional, and reputable, area rug cleaning
expert. Cleaning a handmade rug requires a process different
than cleaning wall-to-wall carpet.
Inspect the rug with the rug cleaning expert prior to
cleaning. Get a signed receipt and guarantee of work before
the work is performed.

Cleaning guidelines for rugs

Natural Fiber Rugs

Natural fiber rugs ( Jute, Seagrass, Sisal) inherently have loose
fibers and knots. Regularly vacuum rug on low power setting,
making sure to vacuum from different angles.
Loose threads on the face of the rug should be trimmed with
household scissors. To avoid unraveling or damaging the rug,
threads on the rugs face should never be pulled.
Spills should be blotted gently with a clean, undyed cloth to
absorb as much of the spill as possible and prevent spreading.
Work from the outer edges of the spill towards the center.
If applying cleaning solvents, test on a small area first. For
stubborn stains, use a professional cleaning service that
specializes in wool rugs. Do not dry clean the rug, as strong
cleaning chemicals may damage or fade the rug.

Shag Rugs
Spray extraction (along with use of a wool-approved product
for wool rugs) can be used to clean shag rugs.
Shedding is normal for wool shag rugs and decreases over time.
Do not pull out yarns, as this may result in damage to the rug
Canister vacuums without a beater bar are most effective in
cleaning shag rugs. Vacuums with beater bars and/or brushes,
or those set too low, may damage the face of the rug.

HAIR-ON-HIDE
To clean a hair-on-hide rug, simply shake out the hide, use
a manual sweeper, or vacuum it using a hand-held attachment.
If a hand-held attachment is not available, turn off the
vacuums beater bar or, if that is not possible, set the beater
bar on the highest position.

With a dry cotton towel or white paper towel, blot the stain
as much as possible.

While a hide's natural oils help to resist staining, spills

should always be wiped up as soon as possible by lightly
blotting the area of the spill. If a stain should occur,
use mild soap, lukewarm water and a soft brush to very
gently rub in the same direction as the grain of the hair.

Scrape off any food or debris with a dull instrument.

Professional cleaning on an annual basis is recommended.

Mix a very small amount of dish soap with a cup of cold water.
With a clean sponge and soap mix (avoid using excessive
water), gently remove the remainder of the stain and then blot
the area with a dry towel.

Rug storage

WOOL* and synthetic fiber RUGS

*Avoid excessive heat or agitation, as wool rugs are more prone to

bleeding and staining than synthetic rugs. We recommend using
a professional rug cleaner on an annual basis.

INDOOR/OUTDOOR RUGS
With a dry cotton towel or white paper towel, blot the stain
as much as possible.
Scrape off any food or debris with a dull instrument.
Mix a very small amount of dish soap with a cup of cold water.
With a clean sponge and soap mix, remove the remainder of the
stain. Allow the area to dry.
For all-over cleaning, spray the rug with a mixture of soap
and water and rinse with a garden hose. Dry in sunlight.

38

SURYA training manual | SPRING 2015

Proper rug storage is crucial to prolonging the life and beauty

of a rug. The ideal storage location is a room that is cool and dry
and where blinds or curtains block natural light. Rugs should
never be stored in attics and basements, as these areas typically
lack climate control, and temperature and humidity can vary
significantly. In addition, rugs should not be stored directly on
the floor since carpet beetles in particular are attracted to the
area between the floor and the back of a rug.
Storage areas should be cleaned periodically to remove dust
and discourage insects.
A rug should always be rolled with the pile facing in.
Heavy objects should never be placed on top of a rolled rug,
as this can crease the rug and damage the backing.

Glossary
RUG-RELATED TERMS
CONSTRUCTIONS
Hand-Knotted: The rug begins with a background of

vertical warp threads. Weavers then tie individual knots of

horizontal weft threads to create the design. Requiring
great expertise, one rug can take months or years to make,
depending on the complexity of the design and number
of knots. The most common hand-knotting traditions are
Persian, Turkish and Tibetan.
Hand-Loomed: A vertical warp is created and then a shuttle

is used to apply the weft. Loomed patterns may have a

loop or cut pile surface texture with an appearance similar
to hand-tufted rugs. However, unlike hand-tufted rugs,
these rugs do not require a backing.

ban-3364

PILE
No Pile: The face of the rug has no vertical pile and the fibers

lay horizontally. Can refer to flatweave (kilims and dhurries),

soumak (knotted), braided, felt rugs and more.
Low Pile: The pile of the rug has been trimmed down to the warp

or rug backing to a pile height of about inch.

Medium Pile: The pile height ranges from inch to inch.
High Pile: The pile height ranges from inch to 1 inch.
Plush Pile: The pile height is more than 1 inch. Typically used

to describe shag rugs.

High Pile/Low Pile: The surface of the rug combines high pile
areas and low pile areas for an all-over dimensional effect.

Hand-Tufted: A canvas is stretched tightly over a frame and

the design is drawn by hand onto the canvas. A tufting
gun is then used to push yarn through the canvas to cover
the entire surface area. Tufted rugs can have a cut or
loop pile. After tufting, a latex backing with canvas is applied.

Medium Pile/No Pile: The surface of the rug combines medium

pile areas and no pile areas for an all-over dimensional effect.

Hand-Hooked: A technique used in hand-tufted rugs to

that will show minimal wear-and-tear with high foot traffic.

create a loop texture.

Hand-Woven: Textures and patterns are created by weaving

different yarns through a vertical warp.

Hand-Crafted: A rug that is handmade using techniques such
as piecing, stitching, die cutting, etc. Hand-crafted can describe
hair-on-hide and leather rugs, cut felt rugs, embroidered rugs, etc.
Flatweave: A hand-woven construction that typically has no
pile and is reversible. Flatweave is often used to describe kilims
and dhurries.
Machine-Made: These rugs are constructed on large automated
looms. The designs are created by lifting the weft yarns to
the surface to create pattern.

PERFORMANCE
Easy Care: A rug that is stain-resistant and easy to clean, and
Minimal Shedding: A rug that will shed very little with normal

foot traffic/wear-and-tear. Can apply to hand-knotted rugs,

hand-tufted polyester rugs, hair-on-hide rugs, loomed rugs and
hand-hooked rugs.
No Shedding: A rug that will not shed with normal foot traffic/
wear-and-tear since fibers remain intact. Can apply to syntheticfiber machine-made rugs, rugs with no pile and some felt rugs.
Outdoor Safe: A rug that is mildew/mold-resistant, fade

resistant and easy to clean. Can be used on porches and patios,

in kitchens, kids rooms and high traffic areas. Polypropylene,
PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and Olefin are some common examples
of outdoor-safe fibers.

NOTE: Outdoor safe can also apply to pillows and poufs, as well as lamps, mirrors
and art that have been specially treated to make them weather-resistant.

of the design to add texture to the rug.

Silk Accents: Motifs in the rug design are highlighted with

the use of luxurious, luminous silk yarn.

Super Soft: Indicates a product with significant softness to the

touchideal for rooms where people sit on the floor or kids

play on the floor. Super soft typically applies to microfiber rugs.
Tufted Accents: Some areas of the rug feature cut pile (in

contrast to a loop texture, for example) to add tactile interest

to the rug surface.
Undyed: A fiber that has not been bleached or dyed and retains

the neutral tones and natural variations of the raw material.

Any natural fiber can be used in an undyed state. Undyed fibers
come in many shades, from neutrals to black.
Viscose Accents: Motifs in the rug design are highlighted
with the use of a shimmery viscose yarn.

Using our catalog

Organized by Style

Designers

We lay out our catalog differently than our competitors. We

feel that a customer first shops for a particular style or texture
and then a price point within that style that fits their budget.
For this reason, we group together similarly styled products
for example, classic rugs, modern rugs, shag rugs and so on.

We have developed relationships with more than 30 talented
