Field Note - Basic Infrastructure

a.
-Chinai.
Shanghai has the longest metro system in
the world, can transport 5 million per day
ii.
Biggest urban challenge is water
1.
Southern China holds 80% of the
country's water, 70% of water traces back to
agriculture
a.
They must spend 120 million on
storage and supplies to transport the water
from south to north, to divert water from the
Yangtze River
-Some places have regulated shower times
- Southern China has a moist climate while
a northern China has a drier one.
- China only has 7% of the worlds fresh
water
- South a north water transfer
project is currently ongoing, building canal
system that will include 3 different routes
A
China's population, 1.34 billion people
B World population hit 7 million in 2011
C India and China make up 40% of the total population
growth
D Geographer believe Chinas population will begin to
stabilize by 2025 at 1.4 billion then begin to decline

A Where in the World do People live and Why?

a No country has an evenly distributed population
- Demography is the general study of population
A Population Density is measured in two ways:
1.) Arithmetic Density- the total number of people
divided by land area
- Misleading, does not take in vastness of area and
clustering in account
- Inhabitants of Egypt live near the valley/delta
of the Nile
- 98% of Egyptians live on 3% of Egypt's land

2.) Physiological Density - total number of people

divided by arable land area
- Always more accurate than Arithmetic and more
dense
~ When comparing Physiologic and Arithmetic total
people stay the same but amount of land changes
Geographers also study population distributions - which are
descriptions of locations on Earth where people live
a Use dot maps which varies on scale
i
At the Global scale, one dot represents 100,000
people

Historically, people congregated around

agricultural area

Recently, that trend has changed due to

major advancements in technology, transportation etc.
1/3 of the world's population live in China

and India
Four Largest Populated Landmasses:

i East Asia
1 China(1.34billion) , Korea, and Japan hold a
significant amount of population
1 Ribbons of high density population not only in
large cities but also along the interior of Yangtze
and Yellow River valleys
a.
Farmers along the river valleys
produce wheat and rice to feed themselves as
well as majority pop.
South Asia

India (1.5billion), Bangladesh,

Pakistan, Sri Lanka

a.
Major clusters along Indus and
Ganges Rivers
i South Asia's population growing most rapidly due to
China's declining TFR
2.) Has 2 Physical barriers separating population
clusters:
-Himalaya mountains (North)
-Ural Mountains (West of Indus River Valley in
Pakistan)

A Majority of populations are Farmers

In Bangladesh rural population density is
3000 to 5000 per square mile
Europe
Eurasian cluster has about 715 million people
i Europe's orientation of coal mines/fields
Rural side is more dense than the

urban areas
THESE THREE MAJOR REGIONS ACCOUNT FOR 4
OUT OF 7 BILLION PEOPLE
North America
Cities in the East make up one large Urban Area
i Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore,
Washington D.C = Megalopolis
Cities account for more than 20%

of the U. S Population
Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City

= Megalopolis
Federal Funding depends on Population data
Loss of Money for disadvantage groups

Uncounted people means less

government representation in
Congressional seats
a.
U.S Cant gather accurate data ,
other countries be worse
Inconsistencies in Data due to

informed estimates not actual

counts
Why Do Populations Rise and Fall in Particular

Places?
Ehrich( 1960) published "The Population Time

Bomb" warned that world population was increasing too

quickly and outpacing food production
- Thomas Malthus( British Economist - 1798),Wrote "An
Essay on the Principles of Population", one of the first to
argue that the worlds rate of population increase was far
outrunning the development of food population. This is
important because he brought up the point that we may be

outrunning our supplies because of our exponentially growing

population
- Did not take in Globalization into account
Wealthy countries can import foodstuff due to lack of
arable land
Neo -Malthusian is followers of Malthus, believe
human suffering is at a large scale and
overpopulation need to be addressed now4
C. How does the Geography of Health Influence
Population Dynamics?
Vectored diseases is transmitted by a host,

Nonvectored diseases are transmitted directly
