I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving last

week. We spent our time passing out turkey meals to
seniors through Self Help for the Elderlys meal
program. In addition, we passed out 4 turkey meals,
paid for by the station, to four families in need.
We have been busy at Central Station this past week.
Friday was the annual Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony
in Union Square. We deployed more officers than in
recent history in an effort to keep everyone safe.
Captain David Lazar
Commanding Officer Central Station

Nob Hill Association

I would like to thank Ms. Barbara Mount and the Nob Hill Association for honoring
me and the Officers of Central Station at their annual tree lighting ceremony on
Monday evening. I am grateful for Chief Suhr attending and I am thankful for the
officers who patrol Nob Hill, working to keep the neighborhood safe!
SFPD Toy Drive
We are collecting toys as part of a City wide effort to collect toys for those in
need. Please feel free to stop by Central Station and drop off a toy!
Package Thefts
We are starting to see an increase in package thefts in our district. The holiday
season brings more packages and one of the methods of the suspects is to follow
the UPS or FED Ex truck and then take the package after delivery. Please take the
necessary steps to avoid your package from being taken. One option is to have the
package come to your work or the other is to make an arrangement with your
neighbor. There are always a few options to avoid this from happening.

Crime Fighting
Central Station Officers have been doing an outstanding job catching criminals. Just
this afternoon, Officers in Union Square captured a grand theft suspect who stole a
purse inside Macys Cheesecake Factory as shoppers looked on. The suspect took
the purse in the presence of an off duty San Jose Police Officer, off duty San
Leandro Police Officer and an a retired San Leandro Police Officer. The off duty
Officers chased down the suspect and we were there within moments to take the
suspect into custody!

I would like to take a moment to recap some great police work in the last few days:
On November 28. 2015, Officers Justin Leach and Pierre Battle captured a suspect for burglarizing a
construction site on the 600 block of Market Street.
On November 29, 2015, Sergeant Vanderbilt, Officers Derek Christensen, Michael Reyes, and Ed
Huang watched a suspect at Hyde and Lombard who was standing in a nearby doorway. He was
dressed in black and appeared to be attempting to gain entry into the residence. They watched the suspect then go to another residence. They followed him as he tried doors and attempted to gain access to
various residences. The officers detained the suspect at Union and Polk. In his possession were garage
door openers, a broken keybox, a drill, handsaw and cable cutter. These officers prevented a burglary
that evening.
On November 29, 2015, Officers Ryan Jones and Kurt Macaulay responded to a person with a gun
call at Fishermans Wharf on the 100 block of Jefferson Street. There, they encountered the suspect and
took him into custody. The suspect was armed with a .45 caliber handgun.
On November 30, 2014, Officers John Murphy and Al Ciudad captured a robbery suspect who put
scissors to the victims neck and stole her iPhone at Pacific and Powell Streets.
Graffiti Vandal
A suspect, responsible for graffiti on the 800 block of Geary Street back in August, was convicted for his
crime last month. The case was made by video cameras.
SFPD Recruit Class
The 249th Academy class assisted us today in passing out food in Chinatown as part of the holiday season. (See photo below).
Traffic Safety
Thankfully, we are starting to get rain again. Please give yourself extra time to get to places if driving. I
also ask everyone to slow down in the rain. Our most common cause of injuries is a person struck while in
the crosswalk. Please be careful!

Have a great weekend!

Each month Central Police Station features a citizen

who represents the unique flavor of the
Central Police District. This month we interviewed
Ida Zoubi. Ida is a board member of the
North Beach Business Association.

Ida was born in San Francisco, CA and has kept her ties with the city that she loves. Both
of Idas parents emigrated from Italy, along with her grandparents from her moms side.
You can often find Ida, with her beautiful smile, at Caf Trieste. She makes a mean
depth charge!
Idas Grandfather opened Caf Trieste on April 01, 1956. Ida spent her weekends
there as a kid because her mom would bring her to the caf when she helped out there.
Ida would run around the neighborhood as a kid and at the age of 12, her Aunt
Iolanda put her to work behind the counter of Caf Trieste.
Ida plays an integral part in the neighborhood. Every year Ida helps the San Francisco
Fire Department with their annual toy drive. Ida throws a huge party at Caf Trieste
and invites everyone from the neighborhood to participate in the toy drive; she has local
musicians there to get the party going. Ida also sells a lot of Raffle Tickets for the SFFD
Toy Drive. Ida is a huge supporter of the neighborhood and local musicians and artists;
you can often find quite a few of the local musicians at Caf Trieste playing the accordion or guitar. Ida is also a supporter of the Junior Giants.
We are extremely lucky and grateful to have Ida in the neighborhood, she has always
been a huge supporter of our department and we appreciate her support.

1. How long have you lived in San Francisco?

I have been involved with the neighborhood since I was a kid. My grandfather
opened Caf Trieste almost 60 years ago. 04/15/2016 will be our 60th
Anniversary of Caf Trieste.
2. What is your favorite thing about the Central District?
My favorite thing about the Central is the people who live here and visit here,
and the history of the district.

3. What is your connection or involvement with the Central District?

I am part owner of Caf Trieste and a board member of the North Beach
Business Association. I help with the SFFD Christmas Toy Drive every year; we
collect toys here at Caf Trieste and sell raffle tickets for the event.
4. What are some of the significant changes that you have noticed in the Central
District in the last 5 years?
I have noticed a lot more families with kids in the neighborhood now. Another
thing that I have noticed is a lot of the legacy businesses closing, like Capps
Corner and Caesars.

Central Police Station

Each month Central Police Station features one

of its officers in an effort to learn more about the
men and women who police our neighborhood.
This month, we interviewed Officer Thomas Cunnane,
a 8-year member of Central Police Station.

Officer Thomas Cunnane is the grandson of Irish immigrants. Officer Cunnane was born
in San Francisco, CA; he grew up in San Francisco and attended Saint Ignatius High
School. After High School, Officer Cunnane joined the US Army where he was a tank
driver for three years. Officer Cunnane is still a San Francisco resident, and has raised
his kids in the city.
When Officer Cunnane returned from serving his country, he joined the SFPD Airport
Bureau. Officer Cunnane worked at the airport from 1980-1997, during that time
Officer Cunnane was part of the SWAT Team and was also a Field Training Officer. In
1997 Officer Cunnane decided to teach defensive tactics and officer safety at the
Police Academy. Officer Cunnane taught at the Police Academy until 2007. Officer
Cunnane has trained many recruits and Officers in the ten years that he was at the
academy.
After ten years of teaching, Officer Cunnane decided to leave the academy and come
to Central Station. Officer Cunnane has walked a foot beat in Union Square for the last
nine years. You can often see Officer Cunnane in the area of Union Square with his
service cap and hear his cheerful laugh.

Officer Cunnane is a seasoned Officer, who many younger Officers look up to for
advice and guidance. Officer Cunnane is also a member of the Bay Area Law
Enforcement Emerald Society. We are very fortunate to have Officer Cunnane at
Central Station, someone who truly loves and cares about this city.
