BackdoorsUndermineSecurityintheNameofSecurity
Backdoorsareahugesecurityriskandunderminetheeffectivenessofencryption
foreveryone.Areportbyagroupofleadingsecurityexpertsconcludedthat
installingbackdoorswouldunderminesecuritybycreatinganenormous
vulnerability:"Iflawenforcementskeysguaranteedaccesstoeverything,an
attackerwhogainedaccesstothesekeyswouldenjoythesameprivilege."

About60oftheleadingtechnologycompaniesincludingMicrosoft,Google,
Apple,Facebook,andTwitterhavevigorouslycritiquedbackdoorproposals

Whensuchachorusoftechnologyexpertsandcompaniespointoutproblems,it
iswisetolisten.Thesecurityofallofourcommunicationsisoftremendous
importanceandithasnationalsecurityimplications.Ifthekeysgotinthe
handsofhadguys,ourfinancialsystemcouldbecompromised.Peoplewhohave
accesstocriticalsystemscouldbeblackmailed.Keyresearchandintellectual
propertycouldfallintothewrongclutches.Privatecommunicationisnot

antitheticaltosecurityitisessentialtosecurity.
Encryptionisatoolthatcancertainlybeusedbythebadguys,butitisalsoatool
thatisprimarilyusedtokeepthebadguysout.Creatingamajorvulnerability
thatwillmakeeveryhackersalivatewillnotkeepusmoresecure.Andthe
terrorists,insteadofsaying:"Darn,thegovernmentsofourenemiesnowhavea
backdoor,"mightbesaying:"Great,abackdoorwecanuseourselvestoattack."
Let'snotopenupabackdoortoprotectthefrontdoor.Let'snotmakeourselves
lesssecureinthenameofsecurity.
