Chapter 3 __________________________________________________________ Selecting Location

CHAPTER 3

SELECTING LOCATION
This chapter contains information on how to find a suitable location for
MW41 Sounding System.

Sounding Operation Room

Besides providing good working conditions for the operator, the
sounding operation room protects the ground equipment. Below are listed
the environmental conditions for the indoor equipment. In addition, direct
weather influences must be totally excluded. Refer to the corresponding
documentation for specifications on the required conditions for
individual system components.
See the manufacturer's notes for additional information:
Environmental Requirements for Indoor Equipment:
Temperature
+10 ... +35 C
Humidity
0 ... 90 % RH, non-condensing
Environmental Requirements for Outdoor Equipment:
Temperature
-40 +55C
Humidity
0 100% RH

In a tropical environment, it is recommended that you install an air

conditioner in the sounding operation room.
Equip the sounding operation room with the following:
- Adequate lighting
- Grounded electrical power outlets located close to the instrument
tables
- Desk for handling the radiosonde before release
At all sounding sites where a stable line voltage is not secured, it is
recommended to install and constantly use an uninterruptible power
supply (UPS) to guarantee successful soundings. See section Using
Uninterruptible Power System (UPS, Optional) with MW41 on page 20
for more information.

VAISALA ________________________________________________________________________ 15

Getting Started Guide ________________________________________________________________

Antennas
For best results, select an installation site for the antenna set that is:
- Clear of obstacles such as buildings, dense forests, or metal masts.
- Even, in other words, the ground is even and relatively firm.
A single tree has no significant effect on signal reception, unless it is
very dense or less than 20 meters from the antenna set. Sparse forest can
cause some attenuation but is usually not a real hindrance.

1203-133

Figure 3

Signal Path Line-of-Sight Requirement

Other antenna masts and metal structures of small diameter do not disturb
reception if situated more than 20 meters away from the antenna set.
Metal roofs or other large surfaces may reflect signals, causing shortduration fading. Large obstacles may block reception. To maintain the
line of sight, ensure that the angle from the antenna to the top of large
obstacles is less than 10. See Figure 3 above.

Antenna Types
The sounding instrument requires antennas for GPS and UHF reception.
The following antennas manufactured by Vaisala can be used:
-

NOTE

GA31, GA31N and GA41 GPS antenna

RB31 directional UHF antenna
RM31N and RM32 omnidirectional UHF antenna
CG31 portable antenna

Antenna description and installation instructions are provided with each

antenna.

16 ___________________________________________________________________ M211429EN-E

Chapter 3 __________________________________________________________ Selecting Location

Antenna Cables
The standard length of the antenna cable is 33 meters. Lay the cables in
protective tubing to avoid mechanical wear. Secure the maximum
possible clearance from radar antennas. See the appropriate antenna
User's Guide for details.

Balloon-Filling Shed
An appropriate balloon-filling shed enabling proper inflation and
handling of the balloons is essential for a successful radiosonde ascent.
Observe the following recommendations when operating hydrogen
balloons:
- Place the shed near the sounding operation room so that the
radiosonde operator is able to view the shed from a window or the
door of the sounding operation room.
- Avoid inflating the balloon in the same building where the sounding
operation room is located because of the risks related to handling
gases.
- Free the terrain around the shed of obstacles such as trees, telephone
poles, antenna structures, etc., that might prevent free ascent of the
radiosonde in windy conditions.
- Make sure the balloon-filling shed:
- is large enough to allow the operator to handle all normal types of
balloons conveniently.
- has a doorway wide enough for you to carry an inflated balloon
through without the balloon touching sharp corners or anything else
that can break it.
- has its door on the leeward side of prevailing winds.
- has free space for the gas generator or gas cylinders if there is no
separate chamber for them outside the shed.
- has adequate ventilation, especially when the doors are closed.
- Make sure all electrical installations within the shed, both permanent
and temporary, are of spark-proof construction. Carry out regular
inspections to prevent any oversights.
- Ground the inflation nozzle (Vaisala Filling Balance) through a metal
plate fixed to the floor. Connect the nozzle permanently to a wellgrounded piping system or some other construction with good earth
contact.

VAISALA ________________________________________________________________________ 17

Getting Started Guide ________________________________________________________________

- Note that since hydrogen mixed with air is highly inflammable, the
use and storage of hydrogen generators or cylinders are subject to
safety regulations issued by authorities.
- Follow the Safety Instructions for Radiosonde Operators given in the
Radiosonde User's Guide when training personnel for radiosonde
operation at a new station.

Getting Started Guide ________________________________________________________________

For the operating system to function properly, make sure the following
settings have been selected and installed:
- The workstation has a network with TCP/IP Protocol installed.
- Time zone is GMT.

CAUTION

When taking PCs not delivered by Vaisala into use, pay special attention
to energy saver and similar settings on your computer. On many
computers, the default settings can cause shutdown of computer parts if
there is a long time period with no input from the user, for example,
during a sounding. This might result in a lost sounding.

Using Uninterruptible Power System

(UPS, Optional) with MW41
If the MW41 input power source, typically mains power, fails for some
reason, a UPS can be used to provide emergency power. The UPS
provides near-instantaneous protection from input power interruptions by
supplying energy to the connected devices.
To avoid any power interruptions, make sure that all sounding equipment
are connected through a UPS system. The sounding PC and the UPS are
connected with a USB cable. The correct USB connector is marked with
a UPS sticker at the back of the PC.

CAUTION

Make sure to select the correct, country-specific output voltage on the

UPS display. See the manufacturers instructions for more details.

The UPS includes internal batteries to provide power in case AC input

power is not available. Make sure to inspect the condition of the batteries
regularly and, if necessary, replace the batteries according to the
manufacturers instructions.

CAUTION

Before taking the UPS into use, make sure the UPS internal batteries are
connected.
During a power interruption, the UPS provides power for 25 minutes,
after which Windows is run down. The rundown takes a maximum of 5
minutes. All other values are the default values provided by the UPS.

Switching the Power On and Off

The power switch of SPS311 is located on the lower left corner of the
front panel. The power switch is marked with the following symbol:

Before the subsystem power can be switched on, the system must be in
the standby state. This is indicated by the yellow standby LED. For more
information on the indicator LEDs, see Vaisala DigiCORA Sounding
System MW41 Technical Reference.
To switch subsystem power on or off, press the power switch once.
The standby LED is lit yellow when the system is ready for powerup.
After the power is switched on, the standby LED is blank.
During the power up the power/status LED blinks green. When the
power/status LED turns into steady green the system is ready for
operation.
Red color indicates an error in one or more units during the power up or
operation.

CHAPTER 5

INSTALLING SOFTWARE
This chapter provides information on how to install the required software
for Sounding System MW41.

NOTE

If Vaisala has provided the computer for your Sounding System MW41,
the software installation has been done by Vaisala. In this case, you may
skip this chapter and move on to Chapter 6, Creating Connections, on
page 51.

Operating System Settings

For the operating system to function properly, make sure the following
settings have been selected and installed:
- The workstation has a network with TCP/IP Protocol installed.
- Time zone is GMT.

User Requirements for Installing the

Software
To perform the needed installations, you need administrator rights for
Windows. Vaisala recommends that after the sounding software has been
installed, you access the sounding workstation PC with operator-level
privileges (not administrator).

NOTE

When you install the MW41 sounding software, you must belong to the
Administrators level. See your operating system documentation for
more information.

NOTE

On computers delivered from Vaisala, you need to give a password to log

on to the PC as Administrator. The Administrator password is
adpw_VA1.

Getting Started Guide ________________________________________________________________

Dividing Workstation's Hard Disk

Note that it is not absolutely necessary to divide the workstation's hard
disk into two partitions. However, by default, the sounding file and
message output folders are placed on the D: partition, if available.
Having the archives separate from the system partition can make the files
easier to backup, for example, to a DVD-ROM.
On computers delivered by Vaisala the partitions are done as described
below, and this can be used as a recommendation for partitioning other
sounding workstations, if desired. Follow the Windows operating
system's instructions, and the instructions below.
- Make the C: partition 100 GB in size. This is the default installation
location for the MW41 sounding software. The path can also be
changed.
- Make the D: partition to contain the rest of the hard disk. Format this
partition to use the NTFS file system. This way you can use the
Windows backup feature to secure the content of the hard disk.

Installing Peripheral Devices

Serial Port Extension
It is likely that a serial port extension device is needed to meet the
requirements stated in section MW41 Sounding Workstation
Requirements on page 19. For computers not delivered by Vaisala, this is
your responsibility. Refer to the instructions supplied with the device.

Printer
If your MW41 sounding system includes a printer, set it up to work with
Windows. Refer to the instructions supplied with Windows and the
printer.
For instructions on adding a new printer, see DigiCORA Sounding
System MW41 Technical Reference.

Creating Remote Connection

To connect remotely to an MW41 workstation, you must create a trusted
HTTPS connection. See the instructions in section Creating Trusted
HTTPS Connection below.
By default, the security certificate is a self-signed HTTPS certificate. For
instructions on changing the default certificate to that of a Certificate
Authority, see DigiCORA Sounding System MW41 Technical
Reference.

Creating Trusted HTTPS Connection

These instructions are for remote client use, that is, when you create a
remote connection to the sounding workstation from another PC.
Note that the procedure is slightly different for different browsers.

NOTE

Remote access HTTPS connection to the MW41 computer requires

inbound port 8443 to be open in all firewalls active in the system.

Creating Trusted HTTPS Connection with Internet

Explorer
After you have installed the security certificate, you can create a remote
connection to the sounding workstation using https.
1.

NOTE

Go to address https://computer.full.name:8443

Use the computer name, not the IP address.

To find out the name of your computer, check the information in the
System Properties window. You can access the window, for example,
by pressing the Windows and Pause key simultaneously.

Creating Trusted HTTPS Connection with Google

Chrome
If you use Google Chrome as your web browser, you must install the
security certificate using Internet Explorer, see section Creating Trusted
HTTPS Connection with Internet Explorer on page 64 for instructions.
The security certificate cannot be installed with Chrome.
After you have installed the certificate with Internet Explorer and start
using Chrome, Chrome will also start using a safe HTTPS connection.
Note that in Chrome, https: is crossed out with a red line and a red cross
appears on the lock icon in the browser's address bar, see Figure 24 on
page 76 for an illustration. However, you do not have to worry about this:
Chrome still uses the security certificate in the same way as the other
browsers.
If are using a certificate signed by Certificate Authority and not the
default certificate, the markings will not appear in the address bar.

Getting Started Guide ________________________________________________________________

To maintain sufficient level of security, it is highly recommended to

change the default passwords when the system is configured.
As an alternative to changing passwords, you can create entirely new
user-password pairs for all users or user roles your operations may need,
and remove the default users.
Remember to take note of the new users and passwords and save them
securely.

Configuring Software
Before you can start a sounding, set the following configurations in the
Administration tab:
Under Devices:
1.
2.

Give an IP address for SPS311.

Set a serial port for the radiosonde interface, ground check unit or
cable.

Under Sounding:
1.

4.

Set the station parameters:

WMO Station name
WMO Station number (three digits)
WMO Block number (two digits)
WMO Region number
Station position
Set WMO message destinations.
Modify WMO message headers and footers.
Choose the radiosonde preparation mode.

Under User Management:

- Edit the default user settings.
Detailed instructions for making these settings are given in the on-line
help provided with MW41 sounding software. Access the help pages by
clicking the help icon in the application toolbar and in the appropriate
parts of the Administration window.

NOTE

You need Sounding administrator-level rights to MW41 sounding

software to be able to configure the software extensively. Login to
MW41 with username Soundingadmin and password Admin123. The
password is case-sensitive.
