CONTROL MODULE CODING

Control modules are produced in a few major variations and electronically matche
d to the exact system needs through a process known as coding. Coding is automat
ically displayed when the control module responds to the scan tool inquiry and c
an also be called up through Function 01 of the Function Menu of the VAG 1551/15
52. The coding process requires a properly set-up scan tool or scan tool compute
r program and is accessed through Function 07. Most codes are 5 digits and requi
re assembly from the tables in this section. Careful attention must be paid to a
ssemble accurate codes. Failure to code, or insertion of an incorrect code can c
ause any or all of the following conditions: Driveability problems Increased fue
l consumption Increased emissions Storage of non-existent or erroneous DTCs resu
lting in Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) illumination. Necessary functions not
being performed (oxygen sensor regulation, activation of the EVAP canister syst
em, non-functioning of anti-slip regulation (ASR) etc.).
ST-31
Necessary functions being performed incorrectly (mileage recorded instead of kil
ometers, warning light failure, etc.). Reduction in component service life.
NOTE New or replacement control units will usually require coding of the control
module before they will function properly. In some instances, a control module w
ill require input of a 7 digit code, but the table lists only a 5 digit code. In
these instances, enter 00 before the correct code to satisfy the 7 digit requir
ement. After a new code is entered it will usually be necessary to switch the ig
nition off and back on for the new code to be recorded.
NOTEThe Control Module Coding function for later production vehicles can only be
accomplished through the use of a properly configured VAS 5051 or VAS 5052. The
data required for this procedure is stored on these diagnostic computers and is
only accessible by them.

Note: ECM coding is not a supported function on 2.0 liter AVH and AZG engines. I
f it becomes necessary to replace an ECM on an AVH or and AZG engine, you will n
eed to supply the VIN, the transmission type, and the Emission Standard (Tier 1,
LEV, California, Canada, or 49 States). Emission information is usually listed
on the underhood labels and/or the certification label on the "B" post on the dr
iver's side. It is also helpful to have the part number from the original ECM fr
om the identification sticker or from a scan tool printout. Replacement ECM will
have correct functionality provided all of the above information is supplied. C
oding information displayed in the appropriate area of the scan tool will usuall
y be 00000.

Transmission Control Modules (TCM) for 01M and 09A automatic transmissions do no

Throttle valve control module, adapting
The Engine Control Module (ECM) and the throttle valve control Module share data
concerning engine operation. Under certain circumstances, data that is shared m
ay be lost. The procedure for "teaching" or "reteaching" the ECM the various pos
itions of the throttle valve control module is known as adaption or adaptation.
This position data is stored in the ECM and remains stored. Adaptation data infl
uences engine operation and is set at the time that the vehicle is new. In some
circumstances, adaptation data can be lost and must be restored using the VAG 15
51/1552, VAS 5051/5052 or equivalent, or an appropriate scan tool program to ins
ure proper engine operation. Procedures differ slightly depending on engine mana
gement system version.
VAS 5052
Engine codes:
AWD, AWW, AWP, AVH, AZG, AFP
The following circumstances will cause the adaptation to be lost. It should be r
eset after completion of the following repairs: Throttle valve control unit remo
ving and installing (replacement with new or used). Replacing or coding the Engi
ne Control Module (ECM). The voltage supply is interrupted. The following condit
ions must be observed prior to starting this procedure: No OTCs stored in memory
. Battery voltage at least 11.5 volts All electrical consumers switched off. Thr
ottle valve at idle position. Throttle not operated during procedure. Throttle v
alve must not be damaged, dirty or contaminated with carbon build up. Coolant te
mperature must be between 5C and 95C (AVH, AZG, 5C and 110C) Intake air temperature
at least 6C (AVH and AZG only). Cruise control (if installed) must be functional.
Adaptation can be initiated or restored using a suitable scan tool. Follow the
scan tool manufacturer's instructions and/or use the procedure outlined below. S
hown here is the display from the VAG 1551. Others scan tool displays are simila
r. Connect scan tool to OLC and switch on ignition, but do not start engine and
