Key words: Improving, Reading Comprehension, Make a match
In Indonesia teaching English is from elementary school grade until
university. Reading is one of important basic language skills used by students in
English lesson. Method is a very important component in the learning process that
must be developed creatively by teachers. In the development of learning, a
teacher is free to modify it based on the students needs or classes condition. But
teaching reading skill usually still emphasize on monotonous strategy. The
learning process just translating the text and answering the question based on the
text. This process absolutely make the student bored. Usually the students were
afraid to make a mistake when they read the text. To solve the problem of reading
skill the writer tries to find the solution through Make a match method.
This research discusses about the implementation of Make a match method
effective to improve the students reading comprehension at the eighth grade of
SMPN 2 Jetis in the 2012/2013 academic year. The purpose of study is to know
the result of the implementation of Make a match in order to improve the
students reading comprehension especially in descriptive at the eight grade of
SMPN 2 Jetis in the 2012/2013 academic year.
The research was done in SMP N 2 Jetis started on 28th July 2012 until 9th August
2012. The subject in this research is class VIII B. The research was done in two

cycles. The writer used three instruments. There are Observation, Questionnaire,
and Test. The Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal(KKM) of the test is 75.
Based on the result of the Test in cycle one was found that the student who
got score above 75 were 7 students or 63,42%. But 14 of students got score under
KKM. Therefore, after conducting cycle two, all of students got score 75. From
the observation showed that students more active in the class. It showed from the
result of observation that from 46,42% to 82,14%.The result of questionnaire
showed that the improving students reading comprehension in SMP 2 Jetis in the
2012/2013 in the academic year ran effective and successfully from 57,44% to
85,26%.

vii

Finally the researcher suggests for the English teacher to be creative and
innovative and always be able to develop their thought to create enjoyable
learning for the students. And for the next researcher, it is hoped to conduct the
action research and present the result better than this.

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of Study

Language is one of the most important things in communication. As an
international language, English is very important and has interrelationship with
various aspects of life owned by human being. In Indonesia, English considered as
the first foreign language and it has been taught formally from elementary school
up to the university level.
In English, there are four skills that should be mastered by the students,
they are: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The reading skill is very
important in the education field, because the students need to be exercised in order
to have a good skill in reading.
Reading is about understanding written texts. It is complex activity that
involves both perception and thought. Reading consists of two related processes:
word recognition and comprehension. Word recognition refers to the process of
perceiving how written symbols correspond to ones spoken language.
Comprehension is the process of making sense of word, sentences and connected
text. Readers typically use of background knowledge, vocabulary, grammatical
knowledge, experience with text and other strategies to help them understand
written text. Learning to read is an important educational goal. For both children
and adults, the ability to read open up new worlds and opportunities. It enables us
to gain new knowledge, enjoy literature (Bernhardt, 1991: 6).

Reading is also something crucial and indispensable for the students

because the success of their study depends on the greater part of their ability to
read. If their reading skill are poor, they are like to fail in their study or at least
they will have difficulty in making progress. On the other hand, if they have a
good ability in reading, they will have a better chance to success in their study.
Based on the observation, the teacher should be creative to find out the
method in order to help the students to master the four basic skills of English
language, especially reading. To increase students reading comprehension, there
are many methods that can be used, one of them is make a match method. Make a
match method is method to apply. Make a match is learning using card. It consists
of questions card and the other card consists of answer from this question
(Suprijono, 2009: 94). In make a match method, the teacher should prepare two
cards with the topic, they are question card and answer card. Every student has
one card. Every student thinks about question or answer that they have. Every
student looks for a couple that have a match card with the question. From some
steps that above mentioned, make a match is one of the appropriate method that
can be used in teaching reading because make a match is not only teaching
learning process that is emphasized but also fun. Many problems in teaching
reading, they are; the student doesnt understand about the meaning of text, low
motivation to read, and feel bored to read.
Based on the previous research, for example Tarmizi (2008) the result of
his research showed that there are weaknesses when learning process in the class,
there is no active interaction between student and teacher. The student is not

active to answer the teachers question. To improve this learning process, we need
on appropriate method. The researcher uses the make a match method in learning
process. Make a match method is able to increase the result of study the students.
Make a match have the benefit for students, they are: create the active and fun
situation, the students have more attention with material, and increase the students
score.
Based on the previous research, by Taufik (2011), the make a match
method can increase the ability of students in speaking. The students will feel easy
to understand about material in the learning process and students, because more
active in learning process.
SMP Negeri 2 Jetis is one of favorite schools in Jetis. Although, they have
been junior high school but there are still many students do not understand about
the meaning of text. The teacher should apply interesting method, so make a
match may be the right method to improve their reading comprehension.
Based on the background above, the researcher will conduct a research
entitled The Implementation of Make a match Method to Improve Students
Reading Comprehension at the eighth Grade of SMP Negeri 2 Jetis in 2012/2013
Academic Year (Classroom Action Research). Hopefully, the result of this
research will improve the knowledge of teaching for the teacher and also give a
benefit for the education in this country.

1.2 Statement of Problem

Based on the background above, the statements of the problem is:
How is the implementation of make a match method to improve students
reading comprehension at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 2 Jetis in 2012/2013
academic year?
1.3 Purposes of The Study
Based on the statement of the problem above, the purposes of this research
is:
To know the implementation of make a match method to improve students
reading comprehension at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 2 Jetis in 2012/2013
academic year.
1.4 Significance of study
The researcher hopes that the result of the research can give significances to:
a. The students
The student will get new interesting method and can build the
comprehension
b. The English teacher
This method can be alternative way to enjoy learning, which can
be developed, especially for the English teacher to teach reading in
the class

c. The Institution
It becomes a source of consideration for the official institutional
policy as effort to produce better outcomes especially in improving
students English reading comprehension
d. The researcher
To get new experience about teaching reading through make a
match and apply her knowledge that she got at the university
1.5 Scope and limitation
The scope of this research is method in teaching English to improve
students reading skill. There are many kinds of teaching reading method such as
story map, guided reading procedure, think pair share, and make a match method.
This study is limited on teaching reading skill through make a match method to
the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 2 Jetis in 2012/2013 academic year.
1.6 Definition of Key Terms
To make easier in understanding this research, the writer defines the
definition of key terms as follows:
Reading Comprehension: is a useful term to contrasts with decoding, otherwise it
is best perhaps taken as the product resulting from a
particular reading task, and evaluated. Comprehension
frequently mentioned in cognitive and educational
psychology, as well as, of course, the pedagogical
literature. There is often an assumption in the literature

that it is the goal of the reading process (Urquhart,

1998: 88).
Make a match

: is learning using card. It consists of questions card and

the other consist of answer from this question
(Suprijono, 2009: 94). This model can generate student
learners to engage actively in the learning process. The
division of the group make a match and there are two
groups of problems and holding group answers. Make a
match can be made for all subjects and at all levels of
education starting from elementary through high
school.
