Just Thinking
By: May Jones
Always on the coffee table near my sitting spot is a thick, tattered, and
spine worn paperback book entitled: The Complete Essays, by Michel De
Montaigne. Influenced by sages Seneca, Aristotle, Cicero, and Plutarch, he
writes about life, and how to live it well - oftentimes answering the ever
enduring question of mankind - what is the meaning of life? He assayed
all aspects of life, beginning most of his chapters with the word OnIdleness,
Liars, Constancy, Fear, Solitude, Moderation, Prayer, Smells, Sleep,
Drunkenness, Conscience, Books, Cruelty, Anger, Virtue, Experience and
Glory just to name a few. In over 100 chapters, there is not a problem Ive
encountered that De Montaigne doesnt reach all the way from 1572 to 2015
with an answer. This is my reference book for everyday problems.
Born in France to an aristocratic family, he had the luxury of retirement in
his thirties to devote himself to thinking, reading, and learning about his true
self. He found studying and writing about himself a delightful way to pass the
time of day and looked at himself with great interest, acceptance, and humor.
He said: I spy closely on myself and keep my eyes constantly directed on
myself alone - I do not have much else to do.
When I have been wrought with fear, he told me that there is no emotion
which more readily ravishes our judgement from its proper seat. When I was
suffering, he gently reminded me that pain only occupies as much space as
we make for her. When I needed a friend to affirm my need for solitude, he
vindicated me by saying that the greatest thing in the world is to know how to
live to yourself. When I wondered about power and status he reminded me
that at the first anguished pain of the gout, it is no help to be called Sire and
Majesty. He made me laugh in the face of old age by saying that the
disadvantages of old age could reasonably give birth to a desire for drink,
since a capacity for wine is virtually the last pleasure which passing years
steal away from us.
I myself am the subject of my book, it is not reasonable that you should
employ your leisure on a topic so frivolous and vain he said. I assure you,
Michel De Montaigne, that my leisure-time spent with you has smoothed
out the wrinkles in my life and made me realize that hundreds of years between
lifetimes makes little difference in what makes us human.

THE SALEM AREA WOMANS CLUB will hold its
monthly meeting on Wednesday, December 9th at the
Mackenzie Chapel in the Salem Presbyterian Church on West
Broadway. The meeting will begin at 1:00 pm with a Tea hosted
by Chairman Alice Black, with Carol Brownell, Alexis Hinger,
Pat Gilchrist, Audrey Hall and Sally Whitney assisting. President Anna Dickson will preside over the business meeting.
Tagged Santa Project baskets or bags of health and beauty products will be returned at this meeting. The Womans Club annually joins with Southern Washington County groups and United
Way to make the holidays brighter for area families. Members
are reminded that the proceeds from the sale of gently used
books for the Buck-A-Book project will be divided between
area food pantries. Guests are always welcome at meetings,
especially as the Womans Club is pleased to again welcome
Jay and Lynn Kerr as presenters of this months program. Jay
Kerr is currently Artistic Director of the Fort Salem Theatre.
His professional musical career spans decades. He has shared
the bill with Bette Midler at New Yorks Continental Baths and
written childrens musicals for Broadway and television. Jay
founded and for six years facilitated a writers workshop for
the Princeton University Triangle Club. He has been musical
director of veterans Charlotte Rae and Frank Gorshin in the
original Broadway production of the Hannukah musical, The
Odd Potato. This past summer the Kerrs hosted the ever popular Singing Anchors and musical events featuring Little Red
Riding Hood and Dracula. Lynn Kerr is the owner of Cabaret
at Fort Salem, after a career in the Manhattan cabaret scene
with husband Jay as accompanist. She has appeared in plays
110 in the Shade and The Odd Potato as well as leading a
wine tasting Fort Salem cabaret event Wine, Woman and
Song. Her CD is entitled Songs My Husband Wrote.
