Introduction:
The anionic family is that which contains one or more negatively charged
substituents (anions). Akzo Nobel Surface Chemistry LLC, (Akzo Nobel
Surfactants) have such families containing sulfonate, sulfonic acid, sulfate,
phosphate or carboxylic acid groups.
The anionic trademarks of Akzo Nobel Surfactants are for a wide variety of
products. These trademarks are shown in the following table:

Trade Name
Emcol
Lankropol
Petro
Phospholan

Surfactant Type
Ethoxylated Carboxylic Acid
Sulfosuccinates
Alkyl Naphthalene Sulfonates
Phosphate Esters

Witcolate

Alkyl Sulfates, and Alkyl Ether/Alkylaryl Ether Sulfates

Alkylaryl and Alpha Olefin Sulfonates
Sulfonic Acids

Anionic surfactants are important for detergency, and dispersion properties.

Choosing the correct combination of anionic and nonionic surfactants gives the
formulator the desired surfactant effect in their formulations.
It is the purpose of this brochure to help the formulator find the correct product
for their application.

Emcol Products
R-O-(CH2-CH2-O)n-CH2-CO2H
These carboxylated ethoxylates are mild surfactants; they give generous foam,
and have hydrotroping properties:

Alkyl naphthalene sulfonates are regarded as surface-active hydrotropes.

They exhibit characteristics of wetting, foaming, detergency and surface
tension reduction. This family has excellent water solubility, and is easily
rinsed from surfaces. Petro products are stable in high or low pH
environments, and have hard water tolerance. Lastly these products dry to a
friable powder, which allows them to be easily removed from soft surfaces.
This product line is used in many applications including carpet cleaners,
transportation cleaners, rinse aids, metal cleaners, rust removers and hard
surface cleaners. A brief summary of the product line follows:

The above products offer moderate to high foam. The Petro BA offers
dispersion, anti-caking and hydrotropic properties, with instant solubility in cold
water with high hardness levels or electrolyte levels. The Petro P offers the
best in foaming, foam stability, wetting detergency dispersion, and
emulsification.

The Petro BAF, and Petro LBAF are designed for use in applications that
require high foaming properties, good detergency and hard water tolerance.
Petro BAF is well suited for rug and upholstery shampoos based on sodium
lauryl sulfate. In this application the Petro BAF will improve freeze thaw
stability on the formula, and give a friable residue that is easily removed from
the soft surface.

The Petro 22, Petro ULF and Petro LULF, are low foaming products with
excellent hydrotropic and wetting properties. These products are designed for
steam cleaning and soak formulations. They may be used in acid and alkaline
systems, for de-scaling, automatic dish wash and other applications that
require high temperature and vigorous agitation. These products also act as
Anticaking agents, and tolerate hard water as high as 5,000 ppm CaCO3.

Petro D-425 is a high molecular weight version of the Petro line. This material
is a dispersant for suspension concentrates and dry formulations. This Petro
product is well suited for dispersion a wide variety of active ingredients over a
wide range of water hardness, of electrolyte concentrations. Choose the Petro
D-425 when excellent dispersion is required.

Diester

This phosphate ester family offers a wide range of hydrophobes for the
formulators choice. Phosphate esters are good detergents, and they offer
short term corrosion control on many surfaces. Most of these products are
supplied in the free acid form, it is best to pre-neutralize these materials to pH 7
prior to making high pH mixtures with them. These products can be
manufactured to produce high mono phosphate ester, or with changes in
reaction ingredients, a mixtures mono- and di- phosphate esters may be
obtained. The following table gives ester ratios as well as chemical
