VALVE SELECTION GUIDE

INTRODUCTION
This guide is designed to assist you in selecting valves for your
application. It provides procedures and provides the information for
you to choose an appropriate valve. It includes a valve sizing
reference tool. The tables and figures contained herein provide a
convenient method for CV calculation, valve and actuator selection;
if you prefer to use equations, they are provided in the Appendix.

SUMMARY OF THE VALVE

SELECTION PROCESS
Check the glossary (located in the back of this guide) for a definition
of terms that are unfamiliar to you. The need for properly sized valves
cannot be overemphasized. Good control, economic operation, and
long equipment life are the benefits of proper valve sizing. An
oversized valve cannot control properly, and, if too large, cannot
control at all. At the same time, a valve that is too small will not
provide adequate flow.
IMPORTANT
The first step in selecting a valve is to determine the
medium (water or steam).

Selecting Water Valves

There are four more steps to choosing an appropriate water valve:
1. Determine the water medium temperature, pressure, and the
pressure drop across the valve. (The valve pressure drop should
be equal to or greater than the pressure drop through the coil or
radiator, plus the pipe and fittings connecting them to the
supply and return mains.)
2. Using this information and Table 2, calculate the required CV
and/or pipe size.
3. Establish the required valve body configuration for the
application. This is typically fixed by the particular
application and often is included in the design specifications.
Standard body configurations are:
Two-way
Straight-through
Angle Body
Three-way
Diverting
Mixing
4. Find the appropriate table (see the Quick Reference Guide,
on the inside front cover). Follow the table, starting at the
leftmost column. Proceed across the table until a specific
valve O.S. Number is selected.
NOTES: The calculated CV will rarely match the CV of an available
valve. Select the valve with the closest CV value. For
example, if the calculated CV is 87, and the two closest CV
values are 63 and 100, the best choice would be a valve
with a CV of 100.
In general, water valves require equal percentage flow.
Determine the composition of the medium. (Is a water/
glycol solution required?) This is an important step
because glycol solutions may preclude using some valves.
See Tables 3-8 for valves compatible with glycol solutions.

10 63-8038

Selecting Steam Valves

There are five more steps in choosing the appropriate steam valve:
1. Determine the steam medium temperature, pressure, and the
pressure drop across the valve. (This is often determined
using inlet vs. outlet pressures; for example: a valve with a
75 psi inlet and a 50 psi outlet would have a pressure drop of
25 psi.)
2. Using this information (and Tables 10 and 11), calculate the
CV or select the pipe size.
3. Check the average pressure and the temperature to determine
the quality of the steam medium. The quality of the steam is:
Saturated
Superheated
Determining the quality of the steam is important because
superheated steam can preclude using some valves. Steam is
superheated (and can require a valve with a larger CV) when
the temperature exceeds the boiling point noted in Properties
of Saturated Steam (see inside back cover) for the average
pressure in question. The difference between the two
temperatures is the amount of superheat. Use the following
equation to determine the correct CV to use:

CV = CV Calculated [1 + (0.0007 S )]

Where: S = superheat degrees (in Fahrenheit).

4. Establish the required valve body configuration for the
application. This is typically fixed by the particular
application and is often part of the design specifications.
Standard body configurations are:
Two-way
Straight-through
Angle Body
NOTE:

There are no three-way steam valves.

5. Find the appropriate table (see the Quick Reference Guide,

on the inside front cover). Follow the table, starting at the
leftmost column. Proceed across the table until a specific
valve O.S. Number is selected.
NOTES: In general, steam valves require linear flow.
The calculated CV will rarely match the CV of an available
valve. Select the valve with the closest CV value. For
example, if the calculated CV is 87, and the two closest CV
values are 63 and 100, the best choice would be a valve
with a CV of 100.

GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS
FOR SELECTING VALUES TO
CALCULATE CV.
Factors that apply to all valve selections include control sensitivity,
pressure drop, and closeoff.
IMPORTANT
Factors vary for valve selection when the valve to be used
is a ball valve. If you plan to use a ball valve, be sure to
read the Ball Valve Application Notes section.

VALVE SELECTION GUIDE

Control Sensitivity
The control sensitivity is a measure of how well a valve performs in
the system. Ideally, the control system as a whole should have linear
control over its entire operating range; for example, a small increase in
temperature should result in a small increase in cooling. Nonlinear
systems can cause a large increase in cooling with a small increase in
temperature.
For a valve, the primary factor in control sensitivity is the flow
characteristic. Steam applications usually require valves with linear
flow characteristics, whereas hot water applications generally
require valves with equal percentage flow characteristics. In the
case of chilled water applications, the proper flow characteristic
depends on how close the water temperature is to the ambient air
temperature. For chilled water, the two temperatures are generally
closer together, and the flow characteristic should be linear.

One exception to the concern about oversized valves is the twoposition valve; because a two-position valve is either open or
closed, it is not important if the valve is slightly larger than
necessary. See Fig. 1 for information on heat output, flow and stem
travel characteristics.

Closeoff

Pressure Drop

The pressure drop (or P) is the available pump pressure differential

between supply and return. It is calculated using the design flow at
the valve location. The pressure drop across the valve must be large
enough so that, as the valve starts to close, it diminishes the flow.
Generally, the desired pressure drop is the largest available because
it provides the greatest resolution of control.
If the valve is oversized, the pressure drop will be too low. This
creates a situation in which the valve only needs to open slightly to

The closeoff rating of a valve is the amount of force required for the
valve to close off against the existing flow. There are several valves
designed for applications where tight closeoff is not required; in other
words, leakage through the valve is not an issue. Many applications do
not allow for such a situation and the desired closeoff is tight. Be
certain to choose the appropriate valve for the application. Valves not
rated for tight closeoff are flagged in both the valve specification table
and the valve/actuator compatibility table.
IMPORTANT
In applications where valve closure failure is hazardous,
the maximum upstream pressure must not exceed the
closeoff rating, regardless of downstream pressure.

allow almost 100 percent flow. So, when the controller calls for a
small amount of heat, the valve opens a small amount, allowing too
much flow. As a result, the controller signals to decrease the amount
of heat and the valve closes completely. With the heat shut off, the
controller calls for heat again and the cycle, often called hunting,
continues.

BALL VALVE APPLICATION NOTES

All Ball Valves
Because of the inherent high capacities of ball valves, pipe reducers
are almost always necessary. A valve mounted between pipe
reducers has a decreased capacity because of the pressure loss
induced by the reducers. To determine the proper CV data for valve
sizing when reducers are required, see Table 1.
Unlike globe valves, differential pressure across a ball valve has a
negligible effect (at typical hydronic system pressures) on the
actuator force required to close the valve.

Ball valves with very small ports, such as the VB30A1005 are most
suitable for on/off control. If modulating control is required at small
CV capacities around 1, a globe style valve may be a better choice.

EFFECTIVE CV
Valves mounted using pipe reducers decrease the capacity. The CV
values in Table 1 must be used to size valves when pipe reducers are
used; for example, a VB30A1088 (1-1/4 in., reduced port valve)
used with 1-1/4 in. piping, results in a CV of 48. However, the same
valve mounted to 2 in. piping pipe reducers, results in a CV of 38.

Two-way valves are shipped from the factory in the normally open
position. Three-way valves, normally open (as shipped from the
factory) is with flow from the side (inlet) port to the cast port (see
Fig. 2).

VALVE SELECTION GUIDE

Water Valve Selection

WATER VALVE SELECTION

Selecting Control Type
There are two control types that can be used, two-position (open/
closed) and modulating (proportional).

Two-Position
A two-position valve can be sized using two methods. Method one
uses the actual pressure in the line when calculating the pressure
drop to minimize the drop. However, it is sometimes advantageous,
or even required, to size a valve based on the pipe size. This is the
second method, which determines the valve size for easy
installation, because it is line sized or the same size as the pipe. To
determine which method is appropriate, consider that the pressure
drop and flow rate determine the life of the valve. A pressure drop
that is too large causes noisy valve operation and decreases the lifespan of the valve. However, if the valve size is significantly
different from the piping, it will be difficult to install properly.
The rule of thumb when sizing two-position, two-way water valves
is to use 10 to 20 percent of the minimum difference between
supply and return pressure at design operating conditions as the
pressure drop. (This drop is typically between 2 and 5 psi.)

Modulating
Modulating valves can be either two-way or three-way. Modulating
two-way valves typically throttle the flow of water to the load.
Three-way valves can be mixing or diverting and have multiple
applications. When sizing a modulating valve, consider the pressure
throughout the valve travel. The pressure drop must be large enough
so that, as the valve starts to close, it can diminish the flow. If this is
not accomplished, the valve will not be able to maintain control
throughout its entire range of travel. However, a pressure drop that
is too large causes noisy valve operation and decreases the life-span
of the valve.
Two-way
Select a two-way water valve for a pressure drop of 50 percent or
more of the controlled load. If the pressure is difficult to calculate,
the normal procedure is to use a drop at least equal to the drop in
the coil (or other load being controlled) unless small booster pumps
are used. For secondary lines with small booster pumps, 50 percent
of the available pressure difference (equal to the load drop or 50
percent of the booster pump head) is the pressure drop to use.
Three-way
Select three-way water valves for a variety of applications. Three of
the most common applications follow.
For coil bypass applications, use mixing valves. The recommended
pressure drop is 50 to 70 percent of the minimum difference
between supply and return pressure at design operating conditions.
For mixing valves in boiler bypass applications, the recommended
method for determining pressure drop is:

1. Determine the design pressure drop through the boiler,

including all piping, valves and fittings from the bypass connection through the boiler and up to the three-way valve input.
2. For accurate control results select a valve with a pressure
drop equal to or greater than this drop.
3. Optional: A manual balancing valve can be installed in the
boiler bypass to equalize boiler drop and bypass drop.
Diverting valves are typically used to create a load bypass. The valve
accepts water from the supply and then throttles flow to the load,
discharging the excess through a bypass line that connects with the
return from the load. These valves control output the same way as
two-way throttling valves, and must be selected using the same high
pressure drops to obtain accurate control results. Usually, the pressure
drop in a diverting valve equals the maximum value of the inlet
pressure minus the minimum value of the downstream pressure.

Calculating CV
To determine the appropriate CV rating, one must know:
Valve differential pressure (p)
Flow rate (gpm)
Using these two values and Table 2, determine the calculated CV
value for the application.
EXAMPLE: The job specifications require a three-way
mixing valve with a flow rate of 225 gpm and
a differential pressure of 15 psi. The value on
the chart that corresponds to these is 58.1.
When control type and CV are known, see
Tables 3 through 8 to select your valve. The
two CV ratings around this value from Table 7
are 40 and 63 (for a three-way valve). Because
40 is too small, a valve with a CV of 63 (such
as the V5013B1003) must be used.
In most cases, including the above example, the required CV falls
between two valve sizes. If the pressure drop associated with the
smaller valve is acceptable for the application, select the smaller
valve; otherwise, use the larger valve. More than likely, as
illustrated in the above example, the larger valve must be used.

Finalize Valve Selection

Once the Control Type and CV are known, the appropriate valve can
be selected using Tables 3 through 8. Prior to finalizing a valve choice,
verify suitability by comparing job requirements to existing valve
specifications. If the initial selection does not meet the required
specifications, check the table again for an appropriate valve.
EXAMPLE:

If you chose the V5013B1003 (as noted in the

above Calculating CV example), but the job
specifications require a three-way mixing valve
with an equal percentage flow characteristic, it
will not work because it has a constant total
flow characteristic. However, the V3361E2007
has an equal percentage flow characteristic and
also meets the other requirements.

VALVE SELECTION GUIDE

Steam Valve Selection
Using the supply pressure, differential pressure and Table 10,
determine the value of Factor A for the application. Then using Factor
A, the flow rate and Table 11, determine the CV for the application.

STEAM VALVE SELECTION

Selecting Control Type

IMPORTANT
If the steam is superheated, it can require a valve with a
larger CV. Steam is superheated when the temperature
exceeds that noted in Properties of Saturated Steam section
(inside back cover) for the given average pressure. If this is
the case, the difference between the two temperatures is the
amount of superheat. Use the following equation to
determine the correct CV to use:

All steam valves are two-way valves (except for the V5086B, which
is a single-port, thermostatic actuated steam valve). There are two
valve operations control types, two-position (open/closed) and
modulating (proportional).

Two-Position
Two-position steam valves are typically selected based on the pipe
size of the line; for example, if the pipe size is three inches in
diameter, you would select a three inch steam valve.

CV = CV Calculated [1 + (0.0007 S )]

Modulating

Where: S = degrees of superheat (in Fahrenheit).

Two-way modulating steam valves are typically used to throttle the

flow of steam in proportion to the load. Similar to water valves, when
sizing a modulating valve for steam, consider the pressure throughout
the valve travel. The pressure drop must be large enough so that, as the
valve starts to close, it can diminish the flow. If this is not
accomplished, the valve is not able to maintain control throughout its
entire range of travel. However, a pressure drop that is too large causes
noisy valve operation and decreases the life-span of the valve.

EXAMPLE: The job specifications require a direct acting twoway valve with a supply of 30 psi, a pressure
drop of 5 psi and a flow rate of 4000 lb/hr. With a
supply of 30 psi and a return of 25 psi, Table 10
provides 1.5 as the value of Factor A. Then, using
1.5 and the flow rate of 4000 lb/hr, the value from
Table 11 is 94. The two CV ratings from Table 12
around this value are 63 and 100. Because 63 is
too small, a two-way valve with a CV of 100
(such as the V5011G1129) must be used.

Calculating CV
To determine the appropriate CV rating, one must know:
Supply pressure (psi)
Valve differential pressure (p)
Flow rate (lb/hr)

In most cases, including the above example, the calculated CV falls

between two valve sizes. When this happens, use a valve with the next
higher CV value unless the calculated CV is within 10 percent of the
next lower CV value.

Finalize Valve Selection

With the Control Type and CV known, select the appropriate valve
using Tables 12 through 15. Prior to finalizing a choice, verify
suitability by comparing job requirements to existing valve
specifications. If the initial selection does not meet the required
specifications, check the table again for an appropriate valve.

EXAMPLE:

If you chose the V5011G1129 (as noted in the

above Calculating CV example), but the job
specifications require a two-way valve with an
equal percentage flow characteristic, the
V5011G1129 will not work because it has a
modified linear flow characteristic. However,
the V3351A3006 and V3451A3005 both have
an equal percentage flow characteristic. The
choice between them depends on the ANSI
(pressure) rating requirement.

VALVE SELECTION GUIDE

Actuator Selection

ACTUATOR SELECTION

Default Position

When selecting an actuator to power the valve, the primary factors

are connectivity, default position, and actuator force. In short, the
actuator must be able to connect to the valve (directly or with a
linkage) and it must also be able to close the valve with enough
force to provide closeoff capability.

The default position of the actuator (also referred to as the state of

rest) is what determines whether the valve functions as normally
open or closed. In its default position, the valve is normally open or
closed, depending on the valve body and the actuator. For example,
a direct acting actuator used with a direct acting valve body
produces a normally open valve. But, if a reverse acting actuator
were used with the same valve body, the valve would be normally
closed. (See Valve Directional Notation for guidelines.)

There are many valve-actuator combinations where the actuator is

described as integral (or as a powerhead). Table 15 contains lists of
steam valves that come with an integral pneumatic actuator. These
valves and actuators are designed to be used together and, therefore,
are supplied as a unit. No additional pieces are required and there is
no actuator selection involved, once a valve is selected.

Connectivity
There are three primary types of connectivity with valve actuators.
The first is integral, which is discussed above. The second, similar
to integral, is direct coupled. These types of actuators, such as the
MP953 or ML7984, are designed to be used with several different
valves and require no extra linkage that is not part of the actuator.
These are tagged as direct coupled in Tables 16 through 19. The
third type is the foot-mounted. These actuators require an added
linkage, usually a Q5001. The linkage is mounted to the valve and
then the actuator is mounted to the linkage. One advantage of this
arrangement is that a variety of actuators and linkages can be used,
allowing a larger range of closeoff values for a given valve.

Converter control valves should be normally closed and outdoor air

preheat valves should be normally open.

Actuator Force
Different actuators are capable of providing different amounts of
force with a given valve. The various closeoff ratings are detailed in
Tables 16 through 19. Once you have selected a valve, proceed with
the following process for selecting an actuator:
1. Find the matching valve size and CV within the valve family.
2. Follow that row across to either the pneumatic or electric
section.
3. Within that section, find the closeoff rating (the numbers in
the table) that is closest to the required closeoff rating.
IMPORTANT
If the application requires a tight closeoff, choose a rating
that is greater than the required closeoff value.
4. Now, follow the column up to find the appropriate actuator
type (and, if necessary, linkage).

VALVE SELECTION GUIDE

Unitary Valve Selection

UNITARY VALVE SELECTION

Unitary valves are commonly used for individual room/zone, fan
coil, and unit heater applications. They are recommended primarily
for water applications.

Selecting Control Type

There are two control types that can be used, two-position (open/
closed) and modulating (proportional).
IMPORTANT
Unless noted otherwise, the following directions are for
water unitary valves only. See Steam Valve Section,
Selecting Control Type for details on steam valves.

Two-Position
A two-position unitary valve can be sized in two ways. Method one
uses the actual pressure in the line when calculating the pressure
drop, in order to minimize the drop. However, it is sometimes
advantageous, or even required, to size a valve based on the pipe
size. This is the second method, which determines the valve size so
it can be easily installed because it is line sized, or the same size as
the pipe. To determine which method is appropriate, remember that
pressure drop and flow rate determine valve life. A pressure drop
that is too large causes noisy valve operation and decreases the lifespan of the valve. However, if the valve size is significantly
different from the piping, it will be difficult to install properly.
The rule of thumb for sizing two-way unitary valves is to use 10 to
20 percent of the minimum difference between supply and return
pressure at design operating conditions as the pressure drop. This
drop is typically between 2 and 5 psi.

Modulating
Modulating unitary valves can be either two-way or three-way
valves. Modulating two-way valves typically throttle the flow of
water to the load. Three-way valves can be mixing or diverting and
have multiple applications. When sizing a modulating valve,
consider the pressure throughout the valve travel. The pressure drop
must be large enough so that, as the valve starts to close, it can
diminish the flow. If this is not accomplished, the valve will not be
able to maintain control throughout its entire range of travel.
However, a pressure drop that is too large causes noisy valve
operation and decreases the life-span of the valve.
Two-way
A two-way water valve is usually selected to take a pressure drop of
50 percent or more of the load it controls. If the pressure is difficult
to calculate, the normal procedure is to use a drop at least equal to
the drop in the coil (or other load being controlled) unless small

booster pumps are used. For secondary lines with small booster
pumps, 50 percent of the available pressure difference (equal to the
load drop or 50 percent of the booster pump head) should be used as
the pressure drop.
Three-way
Three-way unitary valves can be either mixing or diverting. For
mixing valves, the recommended pressure drop is 50 to 70 percent
of the minimum difference between supply and return pressure at
design operating conditions. Diverting valves are sized using a
pressure drop equal to the maximum value of the inlet pressure
minus the minimum value of the downstream pressure.

Calculating CV
To determine the appropriate CV rating, first determine whether the
medium is water or steam. Then, proceed as follows:

CV for Water Valves

To determine the appropriate CV rating, one must know:
Valve differential pressure (p).
Flow rate (gpm).
Using these two values and Table 2, determine the calculated CV
value for the application.
EXAMPLE:

The job specifications require a three-way

mixing unitary valve with a flow rate of 4 gpm
and a differential pressure of 12 psi. The value
on the chart that corresponds to these is 1.2.
This CV rating matches with two of the valves
in Table 18.

In most cases, the required CV falls between two valve sizes. If the
pressure drop associated with the smaller valve is acceptable for the
application, select the smaller valve. Otherwise, use the larger valve.
More than likely, the larger valve must be used.

CV for Steam Valves

Refer to the directions found for steam valve CV calculation found
in the Steam Valve Selection section (see Table 22).

Replacing Unitary Valves

When replacing unitary valves, it is best to replace like-for-like;
otherwise, the number of wires from the valve actuator can become
a problem. Even though the valve itself may fit the specifications of
the job, some unitary valve actuators require more wires than the
typical actuator, so they should not be used for standard
replacements unless the installer is aware of all the specifications
for the actuator. Jobs where this is not a problem are primarily
major retrofits, in which rewiring is necessary regardless of the
actuator used.

VALVE SELECTION GUIDE

Unitary Valve Selection

Finalize Valve Selection

Unitary Valve Actuators

Once the Control Type and CV are known, select the appropriate
valve. Prior to finalizing a choice, verify suitability by comparing
job requirements to existing valve specifications. If the initial
selection does not meet the required specifications, check the table
again for an appropriate valve.

In general, actuators for unitary valves are unique to each valve or

valve family, which means there is little or no choice when it comes
to the actuator. However, some valves, such as the VC Valves,
provide some options for selecting an actuator.

Table 23. Unitary valve/actuator compatibility and closeoff ratings.

NOTE: Electronic actuators are all non-spring return.

Equations for Manual Calculations

1. Calculation of CV for
a)

Water

CV = Q

Where: Q = Fluid Flow required (gpm).

h = Pressure drop (psi).
b)

Steam

CV =

(Q V )

(63.5 h )

Where: Q = Quantity of steam required to flow

through the valve (lb/hr).
V = Specific volume of steam entering the
3
valve (ft /lb).
h = Pressure drop across the valve (psi).
2. Calculation of flow rate (Q):
a) Water (Q = gpm)
When Btu/hr is provided:

Q=

( Btu / hr )
( K Tw )

Where: Btu/hr = Heat output

K = Value from Table 26; based on temperature of water entering the coil
(lb/gal. x 60 min/hr).
Tw= Temperature difference of water
entering and leaving the coil.
When sizing hot water coil valves for fan systems:

Q=

44 63-8038

(cfm 1.08 Ta)

( K Tw )

Where: cfm = Airflow across the coil.

1.08 =Scaling constant. This value is derived
per the NOTE following.
1000 Btu/lb = Scaling constant representing
approximate heat of vaporization of
steam
Ta = Temperature difference of air entering
and leaving the coil.
K = Value from Table 26; based on temp. of
water entering the coil (lb/gal. x 60
min/hr).
Tw = Temperature difference of water
entering and leaving the coil
NOTE: The scaling constant 1.08 is derived as
follows:

1.08 =

lb air
( 0.24 Btu) 60 min

hr
13.35 ft 3
(lb air F )
3

Where: lb air/13.35 ft = The specific volume of air

at standard conditions of temperature and
atmospheric pressure.
Simplifying the equation:

1.08 =

Where: cfm = Airflow across the coil.
Btu/lb = Heat per pound of dry air removed.
Includes both sensible and latent heat.
113 = Scaling constant.
Tw = Temperature difference of water

b)

Steam (Q = lb/hr)
When Btu/hr (heat output) is provided on the coil
schedule:

Q=

Where: W1 = Humidity ratio entering humidifier,

pounds of moisture per pound of dry air.
W2 = Humidity ratio leaving humidifier,
pounds of moisture per pound of dry air.
lbair/13.35 ft3 = Specific volume of air at
standard temperature and atmospheric
pressure conditions.
ft3/min = Cubic feet per minute (cfm) of air
from the fan.
3. Calculation of h and hCritical
In the steam valve CV calculation (see 1.b. above), the
value of h is determined by the smaller of:

( Btu / hr )

(1000 Btu lb steam)

h = 0.8 ( Pm PR )

Where: Btu/hr = heat output.

and

When sizing coil valves for fan systems:

Q=

(cfm 1.08 Ta )

hCritical = 0.5 ( Pm + 14.7 psi )

When calculating the Cv, as the value of h, use the

smaller of h and hCritical.

(1000 Btu lb steam)

3

Where: cfm = Cubic feet per minute (ft /min) of air

from the fan.
Ta = Temperature difference of air entering
and leaving the coil.
When sizing steam to hot water converter valves:

Q = gpm Tw 0.49
Where: gpm = Gallons per minute of water flow
through the converter.
Tw = Temperature difference of water
entering and leaving the converter.
0.49 = Scaling constant. This value is derived
as follows:
0.49 = [(8.33 lb water)/gal] x (60 min/hr)

VALVE SELECTION GUIDE

Appendix

Glossary
Actuator: The part of an automatic control valve that moves the
valve stem based on an electric, electronic, or pneumatic
signal from a controller. The actuator and valve can be two
separate devices or together they can be one device.
Ball valve: Ball valves provide high flow capacity, tight shut-off
and are compact in size. They are used with direct coupled
actuators in modulating and two-position applications. Twoway bodies and three-way bodies are available for mixing or
diverting applications. They also provide greater closeoff
ratings than globe valves of the same size.
Body: The valve casting through which the controlled fluid flows
(Fig. 5).

Butterfly valve: A valve with a cylindrical body, a shaft and a disc.

The disc rotates on the axis of the shaft. The position of the
disc determines the fluid flow. Butterfly valves are compact in
size, usually used in larger pipe sizes. They furnish low flow
resistance in the open position. They operate in valve
applications for two-position or proportional water control.
Two-way bodies and three-way bodies are available for
mixing or diverting applications. However, three-way
applications usually use two butterfly valves and a linkage
assembly mounted on a pipe tee.
Closeoff (pressure rating): The closeoff rating defines the
maximum pressure drop that a valve can withstand without
leakage while in the fully closed position. The closeoff rating
is a function of actuator power to hold the valve closed
against pressure drop, but structural parts such as the stem can
be the limiting factor.
EXAMPLE: A valve with a closeoff rating of 10 psi could
have 40 psi upstream pressure and 30 psi
downstream pressure.

STEM

The closeoff rating is independent of the nominal body rating.

See definition of Body rating (nominal) in this section.
BONNET

Closeoff rating of three-way valves: The maximum pressure

difference between either of the two inlet ports and the outlet
port for mixing valves, or the pressure difference between the
inlet port and either of the two outlet ports for diverting
valves.

Body rating (nominal): The theoretical pressure rating, expressed
in psi, of the valve body exclusive of packing, disc, etc. The
nominal rating is often cast on the valve body and provides a
way to classify the valve by pressure. A valve of specified
body material and nominal body rating often has
characteristics such as pressure-temperature ratings, wall
thickness, and end connections that are determined by a
society such as ANSI (American National Standards
Institute). Valve Packing Limitations (see inside back cover)
shows ANSI pressure-temperature ratings for valves. Note
that the nominal body rating is not the same as the actual
body rating.
Body rating (actual): The correlation between safe, permissible
flowing fluid pressure and flowing fluid temperature of the
valve body (exclusive of the packing, disc, etc.). The nominal
valve body rating is the permissible pressure at a specific
temperature.
EXAMPLE: A cast iron, screwed-end valve has a 125 psi
nominal body rating. The actual valve body
rating can be 125 psi at 355F and 175 psi at
150F.
Bonnet: The part that screws to the top of the valve body and
contains the packing that seals and guides the valve stem.

54 63-8038

Signifies the Capacity Index (also called the Flow

Coefficient). It is equal to the flow rate in gallons per minute
of 60F (16C) water with a 1.0 psi drop across a fully open
valve.

Direct Acting (DA): A valve that is closed when the stem is fully
retracted; also referred to as stem down to close.
Disc: The part of the plug assembly that contacts the valve seat to
close off flow of the controlled fluid. Certain plug assemblies
are built so the part of the assembly contacting the seat is
replaceable. This type of plug is called a renewable disc plug
assembly. Renewable discs are usually made of a material
softer than metal. Valves with all metal (nonrenewable) discs
may have to be ground in to restore a damaged seating
surface. Note that the term, disc, can mean both the plug and
disc together.
Diverting valve: A three-way valve with one common inlet port and
two outlet ports. Do not use in mixing applications.
Double-seated valve: A valve with two seats, two plugs, and two
discs. Suitable for applications where fluid pressure is too
high to permit a single-seated valve to close. The arrangement
of the discs minimizes the fluid pressure that usually forces
the stem toward the open or closed position. In other words,
the configuration is designed to balance the pressure on both
discs. As a result, for valves of a given size, a double-seated
valve requires less force to operate than a single-seated valve.
Also, double-seated valves often have larger port areas for a
given pipe size. Double-seated valves do not provide tight
shut-off.
Equal percentage flow: Valves with this type of flow characteristic
provide a linear relationship between the heat output and stem
travel for a water medium.

VALVE SELECTION GUIDE

Appendix
Flanged-end connections: A valve that connects to a pipe by
bolting a flange on the valve to a flange screwed onto the
pipe. These connections are typically used only with large
valves.
Floating control: A floating control circuitalso referred to as
Series 60is a line- or low-voltage control circuit composed
of a spdt controller with a center-off (floating) position and a
reversible actuator. On a change in the controlled variable,
the controller drives the actuator to an intermediate position
and then opens the circuit to the actuator. The actuator
remains in this position until a change in the controller
signal. The actuator is said to float between the limits of the
controller to satisfy various load requirements. In many
systems, Series 60 floating control provides adequate
modulating control.
Globe valve: A valve with one seat, plug and disc. Globe valves are
suitable for applications requiring tight shutoff. Globe valves
require more closing force than double-seated (specialty)
valves of the same size and, therefore, a larger actuator.
Linear control: Linear control provides constant sensitivity. A
small change in temperature produces a small change in
control.
Linear flow: Valves with this flow characteristic provide a linear
relationship between heat output and stem travel for a steam
medium.
Line pressure: The pressure of fluid flowing through the pipe. This
term is applied when the physical pipe size (instead of the
pressure) is used for valve sizing.
Low-flow valve: Provides accurate control of small amounts of
fluid. Low-flow valves are available with ports as small as
1/8 inch.
Mixing valve: A three-way valve with two inlet ports and one
common outlet port. DO NOT USE IN DIVERTING
APPLICATIONS.
Plug: The part that varies the opening for the fluid to flow through
the valve body.
Port: The opening in the valve seat.
Pressure differential (or pressure drop): The difference in
upstream and downstream pressures of the fluid flowing
through the valve.
Quick-opening valve: Used for two-position control and provides
maximum possible flow when the stem starts to lift the disc

from the valve seat. To achieve 90 percent flow, the stem

must open only 20 percent. Linear or equal percentage valves
can be used in lieu of quick-opening valves in two-position
control applications because the only significant positions are
fully open and fully closed.
Reverse Acting (RA): A valve that is closed when the stem is fully
extended; also referred to as stem up to close.
Seat: The stationary part of the valve body that has a raised lip to
contact the valve disc when closing off flow of the controlled
fluid.
Screwed-end connection (Often referred to as NPT): A valve
with threaded pipe connections. Valve threads are usually
female, but male connections are available for special
applications. Some screwed valves are designed to
accommodate an integral union to provide for an easier
installation.
Stem: The shaft that runs through the valve bonnet and connects an
actuator to the valve plug.
Three-way valve: A valve with three ports. The internal design of a
three-way valve classifies it as either mixing or diverting.
Three-way valves control in proportional or two-position
applications and do not provide tight shutoff.
Tight shutoff/closeoff: A condition in which virtually no leakage of
controlled fluid occurs with the valve closed. Generally, only
single-seated valves provide tight shutoff. Double-seated valves
typically have one to three percent leakage even while closed.
Trim: Every part of the valve that comes in contact with the flow
with the exception of the body; namely, the plug, seat, disc
and stem.
Two-position control: A two-position control signalalso referred
to as on/offis an spst signal. The controller is a simple on/
off switch. Makes the circuit when the switch is closed;
breaks it when the switch is open. When off, the valve drives
to its normal position (closed or open, depending on the
valve/actuator combination). When on, the valve is driven to
the opposite position.
Two-way valve: A valve with one inlet and one outlet port. Twoway valves control water or steam in two-position or
proportional applications and provide tight shut-off in both
straight-through and angled-body patterns.
Valve flow characteristic: The relationship between the stem travel
or rotation of a valve, expressed in percent of travel, and the
fluid flow through the valve, expressed in percent of full flow.
