Big strides for cure

At first glance, seven-month-old Benjamin

McLean looks just like any other healthy
baby.
However six months ago he was diagnosed
with Cystic Fibrosis.
The Bacchus Marsh baby takes a cocktail
of medication before every feed and spends
30-minutes each morning and night doing
physiotherapy.
His parents, Virginie and Angus, said they
couldnt believe their son was diagnosed
with the genetic disorder so soon after he
was born.
Ben is our first child, he was born in April
and was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis
through the heel prick test, which was taken
in the hospital 48-hours after his birth,
Virginie said.
When we were called in to be I told I
thought you must have made a mistake, he
is fine.
The condition, which affects the lungs,
airways and digestive system, is the most
common, life-shortening chronic illness
affecting young Australians.
Virginie, who knew little to nothing about
the disease prior to the diagnosis, said she
had since devoted her time to researching as
much information as possible.
Its very important for Ben to be healthy
and active, which is obviously a little difficult
at this stage considering he cant even crawl
yet, but with age and regular physiotherapy
it will be easier down the track, she said.
Staying active is good for his lungs, so
we decided to set a good example early
by jumping on board the Cystic Fibrosis
fundraiser Great Strides.
The annual fundraiser is a fun run and walk
that raises awareness and funds for Cystic
Fibrosis organisations around Australia.
Team Big Ben, which consisted of 28 people
and one dog, competed in the four-kilometre
run and walk on Sunday (November 8) at the
Melbourne Royal Botanical Gardens, and
was awarded the fastest team of the day.
It started with me saying, Ill set a good
example and run, then my Parents Group
said they would walk and from there it just
snowballed, Virginie said.

Council knocks
back Bunnings
By Kate Taylor
Bunnings will not be allowed to build a store at
Clifton
Drive,
Bacchus
Marsh.
Councillors voted at a Special meeting of Council,
held in Bacchus Marsh last
Wednesday 25 November, to
abandon the proposed C71
amendment to re-zone land
at Clifton Park from residential to commercial, which
would allow a Bunnings
store to be built.
A report prepared by council officers recommended
abandoning the proposed
amendment, stating that
there are other appropriate
sites within Bacchus Marsh,
therefore problems such as
traffic congestion cannot
be tolerated just because
of commercial locational
preference.
Mayor Allan Comrie left the
meeting at the start, stating,
I do not have a conflict of
interest but that some people within the meeting think
I do, so the best thing to do
is leave.
The move followed comments he previously made
about not supporting the
proposal.
Instead, East Ward Councillor Tonia Dudzik was nominated to Chair the meeting, in front of a 200 strong
crowd.
There were 20 objectors in
total, each speaking about
the effect the proposed Bunnings store would have on
them and the town.
We need to speak this and
we need our councillors to
hear this - it is completely
inappropriate. The traffic
congestion - school traffic,
trades people, this will not

be remedied by a round-about at that intersection. It

will create an eyesore at the
entrance to Bacchus Marsh.
A Bunnings building is out
of character with the surrounding area - they should
apply to use land in a more
appropriate site said objector Judy Ellison.
Representing some objectors Peter Hawkens said that
adding traffic from Bunnings is only a nightmare for
the future and echoed the
call to find a more suitable
site.
Bunnings is a destination
retail place, people will travel a long distance to go there,
and it should be in Parwan
away from residential estates. Should Bunnings get
the rezoning and choose not
to proceed it could be used
for other commercial purposes, he said.
However
speaking
on
behalf of Bunnings, Phillip Drew pointed out that
Clifton Park is the best spot
for a store.
Why Bacchus Marsh? Because its rapidly growing,
with 250 new houses being
built per year and no sign
of that abating, he told the
meeting.
We have looked elsewhere,
and this site is the best opportunity for Bunnings.
Mr Drew outlined that the
store would stop Bacchus
Marsh dollars going to Melton, where he says Bacchus
Marsh residents travel to
Bunnings on average six
times per year.
Planning consultant Richard Umbers also spoke on
behalf of Bunnings, saying
that sites at Parwan and the
Darley Brickworks had been
considered but the Clifton

Park site was most suitable

and said Bunnings would
prefer the application went
to an independent planning
panel.
Traffic consultant Deborah
Donald, again speaking on
behalf of Bunnings, told the
meeting that VicRoads had
approved the round-a-bout
as the best option for traffic which will make the exit
from Clifton Drive easier.
However West Ward Councillor Tom Sullivan objected
to how long the process has
taken, since the first Bunnings interaction back in
2013.
My issue was that if there
are insurmountable issues
that are evident now, they
should have been evident in
2014, or 2013, and it shouldnt
have got to this point in
time, Cr Sullivan said.
Theres nothing legally
wrong with what happened,
but I do think there was a lot
of time and effort put in by
all and sundry when if the
issues as described last night
were insurmountable and
couldnt proceed, then they
should have been evident
a couple of years ago. We
shouldnt have even got to

It makes us look rather
amateurish, thats all.
Woodlands Ward Councillor Pat Toohey spoke
in favour of the motion to
abandon saying that Bunnings has chosen the site because of direct access to the
freeway
It is obvious why they
chose it. I dont hold anything against Bunnings to
want the best spot but
there are other best spots.
The state government
needs to step up and provide the infrastructure dollars needed, I could include
the federal government too.
I dont see why Bunnings
should pick off the prime
land - they should lobby the
state government to get us
the road infrastructure; the
spot is already allocated for
housing and that is the best
use.
Central Ward Councillor
Paul Tatchell did not vote,
while Cr Sullivan registered
the only objection against
the vote to abandon the proposal, which was carried.

Bunnings Property General Manager Andrew Marks

confirmed that Bunnings does not own the Clifton Park
Estate land but the decision was still a disappointing
one.
Bunnings is disappointed with the decision for its
proposed Bacchus Marsh development, he said.
The new Bunnings Warehouse development would have
represented an investment of $24 million and provided
jobs for over 85 local residents, injecting over $2 million in
wages into the local community each year.
Mr Marks said that Bacchus Marsh remains an area of
interest for Bunnings.
We hope to be able to bring a convenient offer to local
residents in the future.

Wish list includes

new pool
By Kate Taylor
Moorabools Mayor Allan
Comrie has three Bacchus
Marsh projects on the top of
his wish list for the shire.
And building an indoor
pool in Bacchus Marsh is
back on the agenda.
It was never off the
agenda, explained Mayor
Comrie.
Residents have wanted one
since 1984. The outdoor pool
thats there was built in 1933;
it leaks more water than we
can put in it. Its well past its
use-by date.
Mayor Comrie estimates
the project will cost $30 million that would include an
indoor pool, fitness centre
and crche.
Youre probably looking
at about $30 million to do it
properly.
The figure equates to about
$1000 from each of Moorabools entire population of
30,000 - but with a federal
election year next year, its
perfect timing to start lobbying for funding.
Were hoping to get the
money from the state and
federal
governments
mainly the feds.
Mayor Comrie is also confi-

dent that the facility would
be used.
A lot of people at the moment travel to Melton to do
it all, theres definitely a need
here.
Two projects are more
important than the pool,
however.
Firstly road infrastructure,
the roads in Bacchus Marsh,
and Halletts Way especially.

And the bypass to get the

trucks out of Bacchus Marsh
would be the second one,
and then the pool would be
the third one on the agenda.
But its all going to take a
lot of money. Well be pushing the feds very hard.
But will the feds come to the
table?
Thats the $64,000 question. We hope.

Getting the hang of breastfeeding can be tricky but it

Three Moorabool Shire
Council Maternal and Child
Health nurses have qualified

The MCH nurses - Ann, Pat

of intensive study modules
and passed an internationally recognised examination.

The trio joins colleague Josie, bringing the total number of nurses in the MCH

to four.
The skills and knowledge

Early Years Manager Sharon

Great big strides

(from page 1)

We had people from Bacchus Marsh and

Ballan, both friends, family and strangers,
it was amazing how many people said they
would do more than just donate.
Virginie said the team had decided to set an
initial fundraising goal of $1,500, however in
a short time their hopeful tally had already
doubled.
We are at $4,500 now, and donations are
still trickling in, so we are thrilled, she said.
It has just been so great to have so many
friends, family and even complete strangers

say look, we will jump in and help you. Obviously the money is really important but its
also about awareness because unfortunately
people look at a child with Cystic Fibrosis
and they dont realise how serious it is.
Team Big Ben, who is currently sitting
second on the Cystic Fibrosis fundraising
leader board, is still taking donations until
December 1.
To donate, visit https://gs2015melb.every

On behalf of all the staff and trainers at The

Having more staff with

specialised lactation knowledge and experience will
provide greater opportunities for new mothers to access timely support. This is
particularly critical within
the first two week period,
a significant decline in the
number of mothers who continue to breastfeed occurs.
Funding from Macedon

Melbourne Medicare Local
enabled the nurses to gain
the qualification.

Connor Street school

an old idea

By Kate Taylor

A new state primary school

will be built in the Stonehill
area, Member for Melton
Don Nardella has promised.
The promise came following the controversy when
the state government announced that it will sell land
in Connor St - which had
been put aside to build a
primary school on, (MN 24
Nov, 2015).
Mr Nardella agreed that the
land is now for sale and that
it was supposed to have a
primary school built on it
but argued that the idea was
30 years old, and a new location is needed.
Were looking at where
we need to build a school
now, not where it should
have gone 30 years ago, Mr
Nardella said.
If you were to build a new
school there now then
the growth is all up around
that Hillview and Stonehill
Estate area, thats where the
school is needed.
Mr Nardella earmarked
McCormacks Road as the
spot where a new primary
school will be built.
On McCormacks Road,
theres an area set aside for
a new school - thats where

Mayor Comrie at the Connor street site.

Photo Helen Tatchell

all the new families are, and

thats where the Education
department has highlighted
where the new school should
be built.
There is no timeframe yet
for the new primary school,
and it will form part of the
budget process for next
years state government
budget.
The purchase of a new
site at Stonehill will be by
the Education Department,
theyll pay for the Stonehill
land - by the selling off of the
other site it means we can do
that.
Weve put in a consideration for next years budget
so well go through that
process.
Mr Nardella also said that
the new location would be a

better one.
Theres absolutely no value
building a school where its
not easily accessible. You really need to build primary
schools where the people
and the kiddies are.
Some of its also about
dealing with the traffic issues - instead of everybody
getting in the car and travelling through the Bacchus
Marsh roads, people will
be able to walk their kids to
school.
For people to get to Connor St from Hillview and
from elsewhere, they need
to go down Grant St all
the way down to the main
road, itd just be a disaster,
it would just add to all the
congestion.

The Moorabool News 1 December, 2015 Page 5

Council knocks
back Bunnings
WHAT THE COMMUNITY SAID from page 3

I think we will live to

regret putting a Bunnings
there. The traffic issue, I live
in Masons Lane and the
bridge is totally inadequate.
Look at other Bunnings sites;
theyre built in commercial
areas, in Melton, in Caroline
Springs, in Deer Park I
cant see houses built up to
the car park of any of those
Bunnings stores. I dont object to Bunnings coming to
Bacchus Marsh, its just not
the right site for it, said objector Michael Ellis.
Some 20 years ago I purchased land in Clifton Park
estate, it was most sought after. There was a high standard of living and to this day
it is still a sought-after location. Its now under threat of
being re-zoned to commercial; if this happens, it only
benefits multi-companies.
Our way of life will change
it will be an ugly blight on a
premier entrance to Bacchus
Marsh, and first impressions
count, said speaker Michael
Crawford.
I live across the road
from where they plan to be.
We have businesses here
already that sell the same
thing. We seem to be need-

ing more housing. This is an

ideal place for people to live.
I am worried about the trees,
they provide a sun break
and wind break plus a home
for the birds, said objector
Suzanne Harris.
When I came here tonight
I had quite a story to tell,
but clause one (of the report)
sums up pretty much what
I want to say. Abandon the
amendment - I support that.
The executive summary says
it all anyway. Back in 1863
in the USA, a fellow made a
speech ..government is of
the people, by the people, for
the people - I would like you
to remember that, and it was
Abe Lincoln by the way,
said objector Graham Arnol.
I live at James Crt, in Bacchus Marsh, with three
other neighbouring occupiers. I speak on behalf of all
my neighbours, and we are
objectors. I feel council is
not looking into the safety
aspect of our court. Has anyone thought about the children? said objector Vanessa
Cvetanovski.
I have lived in this estate
for 16 years, and I object to

the re-zoning of residential

land for commercial use.
To clarify, its not about any
business or brand, its about
whether the subject site is
appropriate to re-zone. Let
us not pretend that the entire future of Bacchus Marsh
rests on this, said objector
Woodrow Wu.
How will a couple of
round-a-bouts ease the
congestion, I cannot see
it. There will be increased
volume in delivery trucks
and commercial vehicles
in the area. Council will be
failing the residents if they
pass this proposal. I will
feel cheated if this re-zoning
goes ahead, said objector
Amanda McConnell.
I am opposed to this development, Bacchus Marsh
has changed at a rate that
exceeds traffic management - gridlock conditions,
Maddingley to Darley takes
30 minutes travel. Gridlock
also restricts the free movement of emergency services
vehicles I have photos, of
bumper to bumper traffic
from the Darley bridge to the
train station, said objector
Simon Hookey.

The Bacchus Marsh Hospitals annual car show, its biggest fundraiser, may have to
be organised by the newly
appointed state government
administrator.

Traditionally the job fell to

the board members but
the entire board was sensationally sacked on the same
day an investigation was
revealed into a number of
avoidable deaths of babies at
the hospital.

A highlight on the local

events calendar, the David
Calleja Memorial Car Show
raises tens of thousands for
the hospital but will probably go ahead, according
to a spokesperson for the
hospital.
Theres no reason not to
expect the annual David

Calleja car show will go

ahead as planned as its a
major fundraising event for
the health service, said a
representative from PR firm
Porter Novelli.
When asked who will organise the event now that
the board has been sacked,
the spokesperson pointed
out that Dr John Ballard has
been appointed administrator and therefore is subject to
the duties of the board.
Meanwhile, former CEO
Bruce Marshall came under
attack in a Herald Sun article
which claimed that he failed
to pass on risk warnings following deaths to the board,
that senior management
kept quiet about an internal
investigation into a cluster
of 10 deaths in 2014, that a
Quality and Safety Committee was never set up - and

that the hospitals medical

director was only employed
to work four days a year.

Administrator John Ballard said in the article it all

went to a lack of questioning
from the board because
they either werent getting
information, or were getting
heavily filtered information.

Recently, The Age reported

that the first family to take
legal action against the hospital has lodged a writ in
the Supreme Court claiming
millions of dollars in damages after a botched birth in
2013 that left their baby girl
with severe brain damage.

They just dont build em like they
used to.
Or as cheap, either; Or on time
thats according to former Bacchus
Marsh shire engineer Denis Murphy, talking about the good old days
when Halletts Way was a budgeted
done-deal.
It was in the mid-nineties, just before
the amalgamation that saw Bacchus
Marsh drawn in with Ballan and
the Moorabool Shire formed and
$150,000 had been budgeted to get
the Halletts Way extension started.
That project was on our program
for that year, 1994 or 1995, Mr Murphy recalls.
It was way back then when it was
talked about. There was an allocation

ramps, the benefit of the work on

Halletts Way is fairly limited.

But as Mr Murphy says, the current

council has seen the benefits of getting on with the project albeit 20
years later.
The $150,000 was to start the project, council the following year would
have topped it up to follow it through.
Those projects, you generally
spread over a couple of years, and
thats what would have happened
then.
It would have been cheaper, just
because things were cheaper then,
but it would have been a similar type
project thats being done now.
We wouldnt have been talking the
same figures they are now, of course.
And the project would have had on/
off ramps as part of it something
that council is struggling to find
funding for, following a succession of
broken promises from government.
Theyre critical, without the government or VicRoads funding the

But thatll be a VicRoads responsibility of course, being part of the

And, in Mr Murphys opinion, once

completed the project will be enough
to cope with the towns traffic as it
currently is but not as it will be in
the future.
The whole traffic movement around
Bacchus Marsh will want reviewing

grows, with the ramps itll be great,
but things will change over time.

Court in action
By Jessica Howard
Illicit drugs continue to fuel
crimes in the Moorabool
Shire area.
Corey Williams, of Ballan,
was charged with a number
of offences in the Bacchus
Marsh Magistrates Court
on Friday (20 Nov), including unlawful assault, possessing a dangerous article,
criminal damage and using
methamphetamine.
On May 30 of this year, the
26-year-old was using the
drug ice in his Ballan home
when a fight broke out with
the victim, who already had
an existing family violence
intervention order against
the accused.
The court heard Williams
struck the victim, who cannot be named, in the eye-lid,

leaving her with a one-centimetre long gash.

He then went on to use a
one-metre long metal pole to
smash the rear right window
of his housemates vehicle
before using the weapon to
hit the victim in the stomach
and back.
Williams then kicked the
victim, who had fallen to
the ground on impact, in the
head three times until she
blacked out, the court heard.
The victim and housemate
of the accused left the house
and made their way to the
home of Williams mother.
He followed them, and began using the metal pole to
smash the windows of his
mothers house.
Police arrived at the scene
and he was taken to a local

police station, where he soon

fell unconscious and had to
be hospitalised.
Williams solicitor noted
the severity of the matter and said her client had
since shown remorse for his
actions.
His behaviour on this particular occasion wakes him
up at night in terms of his
deep remorse and regret,
she said.
He immediately saw his
doctor in relation to his anger, violence and substance
abuse and has taken part in
three out of seven Mens Behaviour Change Programs.
He has been offered a full
time job and his girlfriend
is now three-and-a-half
months pregnant with their
first child. He is very excited

about these prospects and he

knows he can never behave
like this again. He wants to
learn from his dreadful behaviour and move forward.
Magistrate Robinson said he
had absolutely no tolerance
for Williams behaviour.
People need to know that
this kind of behaviour,
where you have kicked
someone after hitting them
with a pole, is not okay.
There was obviously an intervention order in place for
the safety of this person and
the community can not and
should not have to put up
with men who breach community orders.
Williams was convicted
and incarcerated for a period
of seven days. He will also
serve a two-year Community Corrections Order.

I truly believe that Victoria

Doctor Harry Cooper, the

his segment on Channel 7s

Dr Cooper said he was

Moorabool projects listed
included the Ballan pedestrian crossing that bears a

bridge strengthening on the

at a cost of $1.89 million.

Dr

The localised wastewater

The Fiskville Parliamentary

Preparing to protect
By Jessica Howard
The Bungaree Fire Brigade
have welcomed a new set of
keys belonging to a $350,000
fire truck.
Member for Buninyong,
Geoff Howard presented the
new state-of-the-art tanker
at the stations Open Day on
Sunday, November 22.
This new tanker, built in
Ballarat by SEM Fire and
Rescue, has been delivered
in time for the fire season,
Mr Howard said.
With emergency services
across the state preparing
for an increased fire risk this
summer - its critical that our
CFA crews receive the stateof-the-art equipment they
need to keep our community
safe.
The new 4WD tanker,
which replaces the brigades
former 2WD model, can hold
over 2300-litres of water
and includes high-pressure
hoses, a full protection kit
and monitor, and room for a
five-person crew.
The Open Day also saw a
number of brigade members
awarded with CFA med-

als for five or more years of
service.
Brigade captain Peter Geddes received a 35-year service medal, whilst William
Labbett and Kevin Hanrahan were both honoured for
their 55-years of service.
Mr Hanrahan, who joined
the brigade in 1957, said he

still remembered the day the

brigade was formed.
It was because of the 1939
fires, there was a big fire that
started over near the Gong
Reservoir on January the
13th, it burnt right through
to Leigh Creek and cleaned
up about five houses, he
said.

I was only a little fella then,

probably about four-yearsold, and all I can remember
is being evacuated down to
the pub because it was made
of brick.
Mr Hanrahan said his first
fire fighting experience was
when a Dunnstown house
burnt down in 1957.

From there I just went

out whenever they needed
someone. Sometimes we
went away to fires, I went
up to one in Myrtleford and
another in Mansfield, however most of the time it was
within driving distance of
home.
Mr Hanrahan said although

he was no longer an active

member due to his age, he
knew how much the new
truck would benefit the
brigade.
All of the active men say it
is very good because it is a
lot safer.
Brigade Captain, Peter Geddes said he was very happy
with the new truck, which
had arrived just in time for
what would be a dangerous
fire period.
The equipment on the new
truck is far more superior
than what we have had before. It will make our brigade
stronger as we will have all
the crew together on the job
and we will be able to brief
and debrief on the way to
and from a fire, he said.
Itd going to be a bad fire
season and it is going to be
hard because there is a very
short water supply, however my tip would be do not
burn. The restrictions are
there so just dont do it.
Bungaree Fire Brigade has
responded to 12 incidents
since the start of July.

History re-appears
By Lisa Comerford
A cleanout of a local house
has unearthed a treasure,
82 years after it was first
presented.
The 1933 Bacchus Marsh
Football Premiership Cup
was uncovered when David

Wright was packing up his

Maddingley home in preparation to sell.

The house has been in the

family since it was built in
1904, he said.
Mr Wright said he is not
quite sure how the Cup

came to be in his home.

I assume one of my relations had played for the club

during that time.
He wanted to return the
Cup to the club and current
President Adam Sutherland
was happy to accept it.

We dont have any other

Cup, so its fantastic to have
this to display. Its a great
piece of club history.
The Bacchus Marsh Football Club was founded in
Flannigans (The Border Inn)
in 1875 and is believed to be
one of the oldest continuous

operating sporting clubs.

The club only ceased operation during both the First
and Second World Wars.
The Cup is dated 1933 and
would have been presented
to BMFC after their win
against Maddingley Football
Club, the final score being

10-23-83 to 11-8-74.

Local football historian

Chris Kearney said between
1901 and 1978, Bacchus
Marsh won 13 premierships,
so we can only assume
there are 12 other cups floating around out there!

Pattons Prayer
with Pastor Merv Patton

When peace came at Christmas

Both the Allies and their
opponents entered World
War I during the summer
of 1914 believing that their
armies would quickly win
the battle. However, by December, both sides occupied
trenches on the Western
front that stretched from the
North Sea to the Swiss border. Weapons such as tanks,
machine guns, heavy artillery and poison gas ensured
horrendous casualties.
By the first Christmas of the
war, hundreds of thousands
of soldiers had been killed.
Battle-weary men hunkered
down in their muddy, ratinfested trenches, separated
from the enemy by 30 to 70
yards of area they called
No Mans Land, and tried
to take comfort in recalling
what Christmas had been
like when they were at home
with their families. It was a
sad time away from their
loved ones, not knowing
when it could be their time
to die.

Then, in the Flanders region

of Belgium, something akin
to a miracle happened. Peace
spontaneously broke out at
numerous points along a 27mile segment of the front.
Germans traditionally love
Christmas and celebrate that
holiday with a passion. Germans popularized the custom of setting up decorated
evergreen trees during this
season.
One can scarcely imagine
the shock that British soldiers felt upon seeing small
Christmas trees, complete
with lighted candles on
their branches and set up on
the parapets of the German
trenches.
The troops began carolling.
First the Germans would
sing one of their carols, and
then the Allies would sing
one of theirs. When the British troops began singing
O Come, All Ye Faithful,
the Germans immediately
joined in singing the same
hymn. This really was a

most extraordinary thing...

two nations both singing the
same carol in the middle of
a war.
Josef Sewald, a captain in
Germanys 17th Bavarian
Regiment, recalled his role
in implementing this truce
in his sector. I shouted to
our enemies that we didnt
wish to shoot and that we
make a Christmas truce.
For a time there was only
silence, so Sewald repeated
the invitation to cease fire.
Then, The British shouted
No shooting!and a man
came out of the trenches and
I on my side did the same
and so we came together
and we shook hands a
bit cautiously! The enemies
quickly warmed to one
another.
John Ferguson, a corporal in the Second Seaforth
Highlanders, recalled, We
shook hands, wished each
other a Merry Christmas,
and were soon conversing as
if we had known each other

for years. Germans and

British exchanged cigarettes
and small souvenirs, he
noted. Enemy soldiers even
engaged in football games.
What a shame the truce
came to an end, and the two
sides were ordered to shoot
at each other again. When
God sent his message of
peace, he sent his son. Our
Heavenly Father wants us to
be at peace.
Our world is sadly in need
of peace, with the horror of
terrorism, hatred, genocide
and all manner of evil. We
can pray that maybe people
will catch something of the
goodwill of the Christmas
Season, and that there will
truly be peace on earth and
good will to all men.

Good guess wins

By Jessica Howard
It was more than just number crunching for local accounting firm Account(able),
who held a stall over the
Strawberry and Cherries
weekend.
Representatives from the
Grant Street business helped
local and out-of-town children get involved in the
spirit of the festival through
prize-winning competitions.
Over 600 people filled out
a form to guess the amount
of lollies in a jar, which was
provided by the firm.
Account(able)s
Kristen
Walsh said the business was
very pleased to see a 12-yearold local girl, Robyn Murphy
win the lollies.

Environmental Opinion

There were 580 [lollies] in

the jar and Robyn chose 581.
It was lovely to see, she was
just so excited to win and
said she was taking it home
to share with her friends.
A colouring competition
was also held on the day,
with a $25 Busy Kids Voucher awarded to Ling Truong
from Tullamarine in the
under-five section, and a $20
Smiggle Voucher awarded to
Tom Bryant from Ballarat in
the five to 12 age group.
Ms
Walsh
said
Account(able) had a great
day and were overwhelmed
by the turnout.
It was all about being
involved in a community
event, she said.

Is Man the problem,

worldwide?
I went to a talk last week at
the University of Tasmania
campus here in Burnie. The
talk was by author and social researcher Dr Ross Honeywill and was titled Man
Problem. Dr Ross Honeywill
is a University of Tasmanias
Adjunct Associate Professor
and his latest book is The
Man Problem and How
to be a Man Problem Solver.
There were about 15 of us
present 12 of whom, interestingly enough, were women.
Dr Honeywell looked at the
potential for destructive
masculinity as the social,
political and economic problem of our age.
I would add environmental
to that list and make it the
most prominent.
Dr Honeywell talked of
how gender flipping could
make a difference and challenged every man to ac-

knowledge the problem by

rising to the solution, starting with recognition men enjoy unearned privilege while
women enjoy social, political
and economic disadvantage.
Men create gender inequity. Its unequivocally a man
problem, Dr Honeywill
stated.
When was the last time
you heard a woman say,
lets create systematic disadvantage that will diminish
every aspect of our lives.
As mentioned earlier Dr
Honeywill proposed the
concept of gender flipping
as the antidote to the man
problem. Instead of saying
women are under-represented in Parliament, we say
men are over-represented
in Parliament. This puts
an accessible face to a grim
problem.

In the extractive industries,

apart from the occasional
woman, men are making the
decisions. Check the boards
of all the big miners and oil
companies and all industries threatening the planet.
Even in this United Nations
Climate Change meeting
coming up in Paris it will
be men, men and more men
making the decisions.
What chance has our poor
planet got?
This man problem is, according to Dr Honeywill,
destructive in society. And
nowhere is this more evident, it seems to me, than in
the way we approach nature
and the environment. The
destruction of the environment is a man problem as
long as men are running the
show and there seems no
sign that they are willing to
let this dominance go.

Apparently
gender-flipping has already been used
in pop-culture to deride
sexism.
In one recent example,
Hungarian artist Kevin Bolk
created a parody version of
an Avengers poster. In Mr
Bolks version, the male superheroes posed in the way
their female counterparts
were typically represented
side-on and flaunting
their buttocks. Last year,
Australian comedians the
Bondi Hipsters parodied a
Miranda Kerr shoot for British GQ magazine by showing heavily bearded Dom
Nader mimicking her poses.
And Dr Honeywill suggested that every man chooses
to be part of the problem or
part of the solution. There
are many, many men who
are not part of the problem,

and they have a voice and

that should be heard, he
said.
Im simply one of those
men.
Now is this being hard on
men? Can we blame men for
this earth crisis we are presently living in? Is that fair?
After all half the population
is women. Well as difficult as
it is for a man to say it, the
evidence is pretty clear. Man
is to blame. So what can men
do about it? For one thing I
think we need to acknowledge that we men have a
privileged position and that
we need to let this go and
welcome in women at every
and all levels. This can be
done, as long as men accept
that the way we are working
at present is not fair. And
this, it seems to this man, is a
way out of this environmen-

tal crisis men have, mostly,

led us to.
Dr Honeywill was joined
in a forum and Q&A session
by Robin Banks, Tasmanian
Anti-Discrimination Commissioner who had some
interesting statistics: government department heads in
Tasmania male 8, female 0,
Australian Prime Ministers
well you know, Catholic
saints male 21, female 7,
current Australian University Vice Chancellors - male 30
, female 9, current assistants
to Australian University
Vice Chancellors - male 1,
female 39, nurses in Australia - male 1, female 9, nursing
school professors in Tasmania - male 10, female 1. Robin
also showed a YouTube clip.

Keeping kids on the land

By Jessica Howard

PAUL

Bacchus Marsh Grammar students

with career aspirations in agriculture
have benefited from an innovative
development program.
Tamsyn Warren and Emma Squires
took part in the two-stage program
titled Defying the Drift, which is
run by Marcus Oldham College
and sponsored by Rotary Clubs
throughout Western Victoria.
The annual program began in 2010
and is available to secondary school
students aged between 15 and 17.
The Year 11 students spent three
days at Marcus Oldham College
in Geelong, where they learnt new
skills, discovered rural futures and
met likeminded individuals and role
models.
Emma said whilst the program had
initially seemed quite daunting, she
had walked away with a range of
new skills and experiences.
I was able to improve my
public speaking skills, create new
friendships with different people
and gain a greater knowledge
of the potential opportunities in
agriculture, she said.
After the program I decided that I
wanted to do something in research
rather than cropping, so Im hoping
to get into something in genetics.
Tamsyn said the program also
allowed her to comprehend her
future career aspirations and gain a

sense of independence.
I didnt know a lot about the
industry beforehand so it was a
really big learning experience for
me and I think the biggest thing
that I have walked away with is the
understanding that agriculture isnt
just about being a farmer. You learn
about the business and science side
of things, as well as the new types
of technology that are out there, she
said.
I am looking into studying a
Bachelor of Agriculture at Melbourne
University.

During their stay, Tamsyn and

Emma joined 18 students in a
4:30am wake up call in order to visit
a number of different businesses
including Rogarth Dairy, the Colac
Co-op, Lidgerwood Seeds and
Murnong Farming.
The second stage of the program saw
the girls present their experiences in
front of their local Rotary Club.
Interim-president (Bacchus Marsh
Rotary), Keith Currie said it was great
to receive feedback about a program
that Rotary so strongly supported.
When kids think about working
rurally they often think oh I dont
want to work on a farm, but when
they come back from this program
they realise that there is a lot more to
it than wheat and sheep, he said.
They work with a number of likeminded people and take part in a
lot of eye-opening activities, which
really validates their choice to work
in that field. The Rotary will continue
to be involved with youth services
because these students are our future
its as simple as that, and a program
like Defying the Drift really opens
their eyes to the possibilities out
there.
The 2016 Defying the Drift Program
will be held over three days from
September 26. To enrol, visit http://

Something has to give

Careful what you wish for,
because you just might have
to pay for it!
The first lesson you learn in
business is, if you have more
money going out than you
have coming in, your future
in business will be determined by either your own
asset base or the bank thats
backing you.
The only exception to the
rule is if you are investing in
your business to build on future revenue. This type of investment is generally based
on the business balance
sheet, or in other words the
net worth of the business.
Whilst there is a dictionary
full of technical financial
terms to confuse the budding entrepreneur in mini
empire development, common sense and logic will always outweigh dreams and
aspirations.
You cant manipulate simple mathematics. If you buy
watermelons for a dollar and
sell them for 90 cents, you
wont need a bigger truck
to take them to market, and
if you owe more than you

own, you are already broke!

When you consider that
Government doesnt produce anything for profit,
doesnt run a traditional
balance sheet, and is totally
reliant on the punters to produce its revenue, the business model is totally flawed.
Government deficits are
simply the peoples overdraft. If the Government
spends more money than it
has coming in, they simply
charge the punters more
money through the tax system to sustain the debt.
I am not saying that the
Government doesnt have
the capacity to invest, but if
the money invested isnt for
the purpose of increasing
future revenue by stimulating productivity from the
well that it draws from, the
well will eventually go dry
and the future deficit will
compound into a future
problem.
You can spend your way
into popularity, but you
cant spend your way into
liquidity.
We have all heard the say-

ing too many Chiefs and

not enough Indians, well
that is the fiscal realities of
over-governance. Lets do
some Perspective.
The three tiers of Government (Local, State and Federal) are employing the best
part of 20 per cent of our
workforce, and that doesnt
include the contractors that
provide advice and data
with their own substantial
work forces; not to mention
contracted enquiries and
commissions all putting
pressure on the punters
purse.
The employment breakdown in the public sector
is 20% Federal, 70% State,
and 10% Local Government.
When you pull apart the actual productivity the triplication of roles and responsibilities has built an empire of
bureaucrats that simply blur
the lines of accountability.
The vicious cycle of waste
sees the Feds blame the
States, the States blame Local Government, who then
blames the States, who in
turn blame the Feds; the
bureaucrats simply keep

making the spaghetti whilst

Rome burns!
Adding to the organised
mayhem is the non-aligned
boundaries of responsibility;
none of the seats or wards
aligns with each other creating the perfect platform for
political manipulation and
Party propaganda.
The Roads issue in Bacchus
Marsh is a perfect example
of how a political debate diverts the punters eye from
the representative responsibilities; its simply Party
politics taking advantage of
electoral cycles.
Whether the previous governments are guilty of manipulating funds or not, both
Parties from Federal or State
position have been involved.
The bottom line is that if the
region was represented with
genuine intent we wouldnt
be having this conversation.
Governments have turned
crying poor into an agenda
based blame game. The
agenda is simple, getting
back or staying in government. The blame is simply
about whos in and whos

out; none of this is about

common sense economics.
There has never been a year
where revenue in Government has been less than the
previous year, and you never
hear a political conversation
about doing more with less.
The fact is we are running
out of Indians to feed the
Chiefs. In business the solution is simple, if there is a
downturn in the economy
or if productivity is down
you dont fill the tepee full
of chiefs, and you cant run
the reservation without the
Indians!
The reality is we have too
many Indians trying to pay
for too many Chiefs, and the
Chiefs refuse to cut up the
reservations credit card. This
country is going through
massive
global
change
and the political parties in
Spring Street and Canberra
are ignoring the peace pipe
over political advantage.
Whilst the top end of town
continues to build tepees for
the troglodytes, the bottom
end of the reservation is running out of resources.

This is not a revenue problem for the chiefs they just

put a bigger tax on the moccasins; but when the moccasins become too expensive
to produce, how do you get
the tax?
Next year Australias welfare bill will hit $190 billion;
this means 8 out of every
10 taxpayers will be footing
the nations welfare bill. The
burning question is - what
do the 2 out of 10 pay for if
20% of the workers are on
the tax-payers payroll?
We can continue to load the
trucks with watermelons
and we can continue to owe
more than we own, or we
can concentrate on building
more opportunities to build
business and sure up our future resources.
If we dont start investing in
developing our economic future like Agriculture, Manufacturing and Education,
there wont be enough working Indians to pay for the
Indians let alone the Chiefs!
Its time to get the political
peace pipe out, lose the Party
politics and get on with the
productivity.

Dear Editor,
Our local publican in Ballan was fined
$200 from our Council for simply putting
a sign that was promoting an event that
was being held at the pub. The sign
was on the roundabout so visitors and
residents would be aware of the event
(which in my view and many others is a
GOOD thing ...how else are we to know
what is happening ???) The sign is not
large nor an eye sore!!! I think the Council
should be paying the publican the $200 as
a thank you for promoting the town and
bringing visitors in.

Dear Editor,
Now that the vacant land on the corner
of Gisborne Rd & Clifton Drive will
remain classified as Residential, can
our Moorabool Shire Council please
direct the owner to start residential
development?
This is a valuable location for access
to amenities, shopping and schools,
so having families here will boost the
population without further spreading
out to the South or West.
The residents have spoken and the
councillors have supported, so now its
time to start building houses there.

Film a cut above

the rest

By Jessica Howard

The work of a local filmmaker has featured in the

Sunshine Short Film Festival.
Leanne Bowdens The Haircut was screened at
the Sunshine Village Cinema on Friday October
30.
Based on true events, the five-minute film tells
the story of a Footscray street barber named Nafir,
who cuts hair for the homeless.
After hearing about the man on television, Leanne
said she instantly began writing her script.
I wrote it there and then however didnt really
do anything about it for a while, but when I
stumbled across the Sunshine Short Film Festival
and saw that this year it was superhero themed, I
thought the idea would make a perfect fit for the
festival, she said.
Nafir was actually supposed to play himself but
unfortunately he fell sick so was unable to, I then
had to rush around to find a replacement with
about five days to go so it was quite challenging.
Leanne said she finally found a replacement
actor named Paul Dawber, who has appeared in
popular Australian police dramas such as Blue
Heelers and Stingers.
Paul did it as a favour to me, we met about
20-years ago as we lived in the same suburb, I
didnt stay in contact with him but I reached out
to him on Facebook and was so thrilled that he
actually decided to help out and take part, she
said.
This has been a really fun experience, it is my
first ever film and it is something that I have
wanted to do for a while so its amazing to see it
up there on the big screen.
In its fourth year, the event saw a record amount
of entries, with a total of 36 short films across
three categories (Primary School, Secondary
School, Open).
The Sunshine Short Film Festival was open to
local, national and international participants.

Science takes centre stage

Children and adults celebrated Science at St Patricks Primary School Gordons Science
Fair.
Three sessions for students took place throughout the day with presenters from
Scientwists, Science on Wheels.
Principal Michael Kennedy said the junior children created foam volcanos highlighting
chemical reactions.
Colourful foam overflowed onto their tables as the chemicals mixed together to the
delight of children.
The Year 3 and 4 children built Mealworm Mansions and the senior children explored
how they can turn solids to liquids to gases and back again.
It was a wonderful day and one which St Patricks Primary School hopes will inspire
future generations of young scientists! Mr Kennedy said.

Its been a big year for the

property market across the
state with strong growth in
sales activity in many areas
of regional Victoria in the
year to September 30.

This is a golden opportunity to secure a fantastic hobby farm

of 6.5 acres literally within walking distance to town. The very
spacious 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom family home has a large open
plan lounge, meals, kitchen area serviced by a wood heater
and 2 R/C split systems, and the parents retreat/ second living
area is serviced by evaporative cooling and a R/C split system.
Master bedroom has WIR and Ensuite and remaining bedrooms
have BIRs. The kitchen has a quality SS 900mm upright stove
and rangehood and an island bench with double sink and 2
drawer dishwasher. There are floor to ceiling windows across
the front of the house together with a beautiful decked veranda
to take in the magnificent 270 degree views over the township
and beyond to Melbourne. Externally is fully established with a
huge 18m x 9m colorbond shed, stock yard with a 3 bay animal
shelter, mud brick chook pen, water tanks for the garden and a
dam at the bottom of the paddock. Book your inspection today
to appreciate how good this property is at $735,000.

Total sales in regional Victoria increased 15 per cent

over the year to 23,200 transactions, up from just over
20,200 sales for the same period last year.

The Surf Coast Shire in the

states south west recorded
the highest increase in sales
over the previous year, up
more than 40 per cent to 482
sales.

This was followed by the

predominately rural municipality of Baw Baw, where
sales volumes rose by more
than 30 per cent to 746 sales.
This was up from 571 sales
in the previous year.

Other municipalities recording significant increases

in turnover include the City
of La Trobe, up 20 per cent to
893 sales; Macedon Ranges,
up 18.9 per cent to 585 sales;
and Wellington Shire, up
18.3 per cent to 585 sales.

The City of Greater Geelong had regional Victorias

High transaction levels

were also seen in the City of
Ballarat, where more than
1,700 homes were sold over
the year. Sales volumes also
rose in the City of Greater
Bendigo, up 4.6 per cent over
the same period last year to
1,227 sales.
And, while auction activity
is highly publicised in Melbourne, private sale remains
the most popular way to sell
a home in Victoria.

This is particularly the case

in three regional centres
Ocean Grove, Mildura and
Wodonga where private
sales were the preferred
method of marketing homes
for sale. In the year to September 30, more than nine
out of 10 homes in these locations were sold by private
sale, rather than auction.
Of the 290 homes that sold
in Ocean Grove over the
year, almost 94 per cent of
them were sold by private
sale.

Mildura in the states north

west was also dominated by
private sales with 526 homes,
or 94 per cent, sold privately.
Over the same period only
53 auctions were held in the
town.

Wodonga was another

strong private sale performer with 92 per cent of the 239
homes sold over the year to
September 30 being by private sale.

Results Round 7
Premier Division v Lara
Lara set the standard and
by the afternoon tea break
was well ahead on 2 of the 4
rinks and marginally led on
the other two. For Avenue
valiant efforts came from
Geoff Whites rink which
finished strongly to go down
by 8 shots and new skip John
Hofstras rink which after
being down by 16 shots with
9 ends to play, fought back to
go down by 12 shots.
Mention must be made of
Dino Borattos rink which
consisted of 2 bowlers in
their first year of bowls. Although beaten by 33 shots,
Dino and his inexperienced
team embraced the difficult
task that confronted them
with much gusto, and despite the loss it will provide
these new bowlers with
valuable experience for the
years to come.
Final score - Avenue 66 lost
Lara 132
Division 2 v Smeaton
Bill Hawkens rink amassed
12 shots in the last 9 ends to
turn a 5 shot deficit into a 7
shot win and Peter Thistlethwaites rink who also were
6 shots down after 15 ends,
rallied in the last 10 ends to
run out 2 shot winners.
Stewart Wilsons rink gave
up an early lead to lose the
last 10 ends and go down by

Division 5 v Victoria BC
Despite an emphatic win
by Ray Humphreys rink
(12 shots) and Bob Delaneys
rink (1 shot) Avenue were
unable to win the day. Di
Hardiments rink had a rare
bad day at the office going
down by 27 shots, whilst Peter Kays rink fared little better going down by 24 shots.
The loss certainly dampens
the Divisions finals aspirations and like Division 2
they will have to improve in
the coming weeks.
Final score - Avenue 77 lost
Victoria 115
Division 7 v Ballarat
Being placed just above
Ballarat on the ladder, Avenue went about the task of
gaining a valuable win with
Oscar Mauffs rink leading
the way with a impressive 29
shot victory, closely followed
by octogenarian Wally Van
Looys rink (15 shots up) and
Mavis Thistlethwaites rink
gaining 2 shots on the last
end to win by that margin in
a very close game.
Maurie Oppermanns rink,
which trailed by 19 shots
with 6 ends to play, staged a
remarkable recovery to lose
by just 4 shots. Nonetheless the 16 points were very
welcome and gives the team
confidence for next week.

What a game, right down to the line but Ballan fell just short.
One of the best innings from Zac Graham at 109. He was well
supported by the boys with constant partnerships.
Ballan 2nd XI: Bye.

Ballan Bowling Club

By Scot Nicholson
Division 3 v Victoria
For the first time since
Round Three, Ballan tasted
victory as they defeated Victoria by 16-shots.
Chances to create opportunities to score were plentiful in an away encounter in
Ballarat.
Dave Myers evidently displayed this in a bruising
17-shot triumph, while both
Brad Coffey and Neville
Smith emerged successful by one and nine-shots
respectively.

Dave OHanlon was the

only losing team in the
match, going down by
11-shots.
Ballan manager Michael
Conroy said this was the
result the club needed at this
stage of the season.
Its not that we felt outside
pressure from the rest of the
competition to win today, internally we need to have the
desire to win and we have
it. Conroy said, Im impressed with how everyone
played, credit to all of the
players.
Division 9 v City Oval
Ballan was awarded a walkover victory from City Oval.
With the forfeit win, Ballan
now moves to 6-0 and holds

By LEN BAKER
Perennial placegetter The
Gingerbreadman
finally
cracked it for another victory by taking the Pace for
C2 class over 2100 metres
at Geelong on Tuesday in a
mile rate of 1-59.8.
Part-owned and trained by
Meltonian Ian Hunter, The
Gingerbreadman driven as
usual by John Justice possied
four back in the moving line,
as the polemarker Aloha
Don Ho retained the front
running.
Despite racing wide for
the remainder of the trip,
The Gingerbreadman raced
away in the straight to score
convincingly by 3 metres
from Glenferrie Arch which
followed him home. Aloha
Don Ho used the sprint lane
to finish third.

Melton duo Adam Kelly

and Gavin Lang snared
the Claiming Pace over
2150 metres at Bendigo on
Wednesday with 8-Y-0 Ifihadyourluck/Cohesan gelding Princeofthieves.
Making his first appearance for the stable, Princeofthieves was driven
with extreme confidence
by racing in the open for
the majority of the journey,
dashing clear on the home
turn to score by 9.1 metres
in advance of Accountability
which trailed the weakening
leader and third placegetter
Our Bold Lustre. The mile
rate 1-59.1.

Vics dominate
in Perth
By Len Baker
(Perth Inter Dominion)

Victoria scooped the pool

at the opening night of the
Inter Dominion Carnival
at Gloucester Park Perth on
Friday, with both Lennytheshark and Philadelphia
Man winning both of their
2130 metre heats in comfortable style.
Heat Two saw six year old
entire Lennytheshark (Four
Starzzz
Shark/Botswana)
trained at Avenel by David
Aiken with regular reinsman Chris Alford in the
sulky, victorious.
Going forward from gate
seven three wide as the start
was effected to park outside
another Victorian Flaming
Flutter which held the lead
from gate two, Lenny gained
cover at the expense of Billies A Star (gate 5), before
being given the cover he was
looking for.
Easing three wide racing for the bell, Lenny was
posted for the remainder of
the journey, before exploding to the front on turning to
register a 2.1 metre victory in
1-55.6 (last half 55.6 quarter
27.6) over the roughie Our
Blackbird which trailed the

pacemaker, with Flaming

Flutter weakening to finish
third 1.3 metres away.
Seven year old Art Major/
My Liberty Belle entire Philadelphia Man was backed
from as much as $3.40 with
on course bookies to start
officially at $2.50 in Heat
Three.
Taken off the gate from barrier six to settle mid-field in
the moving line as the leaders Lovers Delight, Bettors
Fire and Mach Beauty went
hell for leather at the start,
Philadelphia Man was coasting racing for the bell with
Gavin Lang in the sulky.

When Queenslander Avonnova which had worked

to the breeze took care of
the leader Mach Beauty approaching the final bend,
Philadelphia Man which had
been trailing him pounced
as the pair drew away from
their rivals on straightening, with Philadelphia Man
drawing away to score by
3.3 metres, with Lovers Delight 13.7 metres away in
third place after trailing the
pacemaker.
Trained at Smythes Creek
by Emma Stewart and Clayton Tonkin, Philadelphia
Man rated a brilliant 1-53.8

for the journey (last half 28.8

quarter 27.8).
Tasmanian
Devendra
snared the first heat for likable NSW based James Rattray, leading throughout
from gate four to defeat the
hot favourite Waylade from
the local camp of Gary Hall
which raced outside him
by 6.7 metres in 1-55.1.(56.8
28.5). W-A hope Shannonsablast (one/one) finished
third 2.5 metres away.
The third and final heats
will be held on Friday, following round two heats at
Bunbury on Tuesday.

QUICK PUZZLE

ARIESMarch 21-April 20

There is much inconsistency this week. Friends are cool

one moment, cordial the next. Work comes easier earlier
in the week but you struggle by the end. One caution,
speak out rather than sulk or brood.
TAURUSApril 21-May 22

You spend lots of time making order of chaos all week.
