Les Miserables - Michael Sweeney has arranged the beautiful music of

the musical Les Miserables in a way that is accessible to middle school

band players. The medley includes Work Song, I Dreamed a
Dream, Master of the House, and Do you Hear the People Sing?
Birdland - Josef Zawinul was a composer, a jazz keyboardist, and
band member of the famous group Weather Report. His music has had
a lasting impact on world music. This jazz chart is one of my personal
favorites, as it has a solid groove and a straight ahead head that is
catchy and unforgettable.
Alexanders Ragtime Band - Irving Berlin was a prolific American
Composer of the 20th century, known for songs like White Christmas, and Cheek to Cheek. This arrangement of one of Berlins
oldest compositions was a lot of fun for the jazz ensemble, especially
the saxophone section who rock the soli section!
Time Out - Ken Harris is talented composer who has written several
works for marching band, jazz ensemble, and concert band. He performs professionally in Texas on clarinet and saxophone. I chose to
put Time Out in front of this ensemble because of its laid back swing
style; it gave us the perfect foundation to practice improvisation over.

Thank you for coming! I would like to extend thanks to

Principal Whipple for all of his support, to all of my
wonderful, hardworking students, and of course to all of the
parents who make this possible!

Program Notes Storm Warning! - Robert Sheldon is well known composer and music
teacher who received a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from
the University of Miami and a Masters of Fine Arts in Instrumental
Conducting from the University of Florida. This piece is one of his
programmatic works, designed to evoke the intensity of the Great
Lakes during storms.
Heroes on Parade - Greg Hillis is a music educator, composer, and
French hornist from Northeast Ohio. He has been composing since he
was in high school. Hillis wrote this march to pay tribute to the brave
members of our armed forces.
One OClock Rock - Ed Huckeby, a freelance composer and arts consultant, has gained popularity in his band repertoire. He received a
Bachelors degree in music education from East Central University in
Oklahoma, as well as a masters degree at the University of Oklahoma.
This piece is a fun arrangement of Grandfathers Clock, in the style
of 50s rock.
Call of Courage - Carmine Pastore is a music educator in Belpourt,
NY where he directs band at the Franklin P. Long Intermediate School.
This is one of his only works, but it full of mixed meters and interesting rhythms which have challenged the band a lot!
Shenandoah - This arrangement by Robert Sheldon is particularly
beautiful, as it incorporates counterpoint that supports the well-known
melody. Sheldon is a well known composer who has a talent for taking traditional melodies and presenting them in new, equally beautiful
arrangements.
