And Rice Dinner
Ten years ago this month,
Selkirk College held its very
first Nelson Beans and Rice
Dinner, the beginning stage
of sending a group of third
year nursing students for a
practice experience in Guatemala, and theyre about
to do it again on Friday,
November 27 at 6 pm, at the
Nelson United Church. The
price is still $10 at the door
and families are welcome.
There are so many people
who work to make this a
successful event. First, of
course, their amazing partnering communities in
the south who continue to
invite them into their homes
and lives, sharing their
remarkable journeys, providing examples of vision,
resilience and community
organization to the students. Second, all of you in
our Kootenay communities,
who recognize the tremendous possibilities and learning experience offered with
such an exchange and who
have supported the students
making it all financially possible over the years.
This year, there are 11
students preparing to go,
adding to the already 80
graduate nurses who have
had their lives dramatically
affected by the journey over
these 10 years. They are still
in touch with each other
and often reflect on how
this experience continues to
shape their lives and nursing practices. Some of them
will be at the dinner to talk
about this.

LAW JUDGMENT PRIVATE?
When a marriage breaks up and you end
up battling in court, it can get ugly. Lots of
private, highly personal details about your
family situation may come out and, however
untrue, nasty and embarrassing allegations
often fly both ways.
Recently, a father involved in a highconflict family law dispute asked our BC
Supreme Court to seal its reasons for
judgment to keep the contents from the
public.
The parents had split after more than 20
years of marriage. They were fighting over
guardianship and parenting arrangements
for their four children (ages 18 to 11 at trial).
The trial showed that over time, this
family situation had become seriously
dysfunctional, not only as between the
parents, but also as between the children
and (mostly) their mother, who had largely
been responsible for looking after them
before the break-up.
Lots of unflattering information came
out. The father, who was highly successful
financially, had long ago pleaded guilty to
a serious charge (for which he said he got
an unconditional discharge). He said his ex
was badmouthing him about the criminal
matter in their community after they broke
up, though hed told her about it before they
got married. While married, hed also had
an affair lasting many years.
The mother alleged sexual misbehaviour
by the father with the children (accusations
the court categorically rejected). And the
troubled, broken relationship between the
mother and her older children involving
screaming, nasty swear words, disrespect
and physical confrontations was fully

aired.
The father argued all this dirty family
laundry was highly personal. He said
keeping the reasons for judgment from the
public would be in the best interests of the
children.
But the BC court said its more important
that courts be open. Courts are not private
forums, and this also applies to family law
cases. Its not enough that there may be
unwanted publicity or that the trial may
result in embarrassment. A high threshold
of harm has to be proved to qualify for an
exception to the overriding open court
principle. The situation here didnt justify
keeping the reasons for judgment from the
public.
The court took some steps to protect the
childrens anonymity in its published reasons by identifying the children only as C1
to C4 (and also identified the parents names
by initials only). But the judge observed that
its difficult to insulate children from the effects of a published judgment.
One of the drawbacks of sorting out
family disputes by going to court is that
its very hard to keep things confidential.
There are rules of court that limit access to
matrimonial court files, but once youre in
open court, the hearing is public and you
take your chances.
This is just one more reason to consider
using other options like mediation and/
or arbitration. Ask your lawyer about
alternatives to going to court to sort out
your family law dispute.

Smart watches & fitness trackers: Smartwatches and fitness trackers are poised to generate major sales this holiday season. The value of breaking into a wearable device is
in its connection to a smartphone. With access to a smartphone, a hacker could potentially read emails, SMS or even

Smartphones and tablets: With new smartphones and
tablets being produced multiple times a year, these devices

WiFi: Use caution when connecting over public wireless hotspots. If a person must connect, they should not
conduct sensitive transactions.
Passwords: Create unique passwords across devices and
accounts.
Bluetooth: Unless a person is using their Bluetooth
connection on their mobile device, they should leave it
turned off. If they do use their connection, they should
ensure they have a unique password.
Online shopping: People should be careful of where they
type their username and password. When using sites to
make purchases online, consumers should take care to
ensure they are logging into those sites and not into carefully crafted imposter webpages.
Device security settings and operating systems: One of
the best ways consumers can protect themselves is to pair
a comprehensive security solution with regular device
updates. People need to make sure their operating system
is updated to the latest version. A cross-device security

On Saturday, December 5, in the darkest part of the

year the Nelson Waldorf School hosts their annual Winter
Faire. It is a wholesome natural celebration of the magical
winter season and festival of light. The school transforms
into a Winter Village...
There are natural crafts to make at Winter Crafts. Candle
dipping is a silent meditative event that brings forth the
inner beauty and peace of this season. The Children Only
Store is full of beautiful handmade gifts for children to do
some gift shopping. There is a Bakery to experience the
different stages of bread making and the colorful Wool
Works to create surprises with natural wool. When you are
hungry, you can find a warm Solstice bowl at the Frost Bite
Cafe or a chai at the Rudolph Cafe or hot cider and wieners
at the Fireside Cafe. Past the central fire and the children
playing in the field, is the Cedar Forest Kinderhouse where
children of all ages eagerly await to go in the much loved
Cookie Kingdom to hear the story from the King or Queen
and choose a cookie. There are also delicious healthy
gnome snacks in the Gnome Cafe and crafts for smaller
fingers in the Gnome Crafts. In the Silver King Artisan
Market, local artists are selling their handmade and natural wares. The Snowflake Village Theater will be offering
storytelling and music is found all around the Faire.
All childrens activities are from 10 am - 3 pm and the
Artisan Market is open until 4 pm. Find the Waldorf
School, a five minute drive from Nelson on Highway 6,

Peggy Bingham Oct 13, 1925 to November 12, 2015

It is with great sadness that we announce the
passing of Peggy Bingham on November 12,
2015. Born in London, England on October
13, 1925 to Christopher and Alice Wehr, she
served her country during World War II as a
fire watcher, staying outside during the bombing of London. Peggy and her family moved
to Canada in 1957 where she worked for nine
years at Burnaby General Hospital and then at
Kootenay Lake Hospital until she retired. Predeceased by her parents, sisters Violet, Dora,
and Joan, and husband Sydney Albert in 2001,
she leaves behind her children Ruth Holden, Saint John, NB; Kathy Bingham (Al Archibald), Balfour, BC; Phillip, (Debbie) Cranbrook BC; grandaughters Jeanette, Vicoria
BC; Amie Thompson, Breton, AB; Rachaelle,
Brianne and Britany, Cranbrook BC; and two
great grandsons Caden and James, Breton, AB.
A celebration of Peggys life will be held at a
later date. Donations in her name may be made
to the charity of choice or Jubilee Manor.

A Book Under Every Tree

Brings Books To Kids
Books can open whole worlds as long as you have one.
This holiday season a local partnership aims to put a book
under every tree for the children of holiday hamper recipients.
Holiday hampers are distributed annually by the Nelson
Food Cupboard to more than 500 people working hard to
make ends meet, including 150 children. Columbia Basin
Alliance for Literacy, the Nelson Public Library and the
Nelson Star have teamed up to see a book included for
every child aged 0 to 15 years by requesting donations of
books that are new or in new condition.
This is a great initiative, says teen and literacy services
coordinator Joanne Harris. Every child should receive
the gift of reading, now and throughout the year.
Donations should be unwrapped and may be dropped
in dedicated boxes located at the Nelson Library, the
Nelson Star newspaper at 514 Hall Street, or the Learning Place on the lower level of City Hall from now until
Thursday, December 10.

New Food Producers Co-Op

First Elected Board
The Kootenay and Boundary Food Producers Co-op
(KBFPC) will be holding its first Annual General Meeting in Nelson on Wednesday, November 25 at 7 pm in
the Co-op Meeting Room above Hipperson Hardware.
The current five member board was appointed in April
and the AGM will see the first elected board ushered in.
KBFPC has just received a Technical Assistance grant
from Vancity Community Investment for board development and organizational guidance so new board members
will have professional help moving forward.
KBFPC incorporated in March, 2015 and has already
completed a pilot delivery and marketing project. This
service will be expanded next year and a new project
started which will see a storage facility leased in Salmo to
offer co-op members safe winter storage for crops such as
squash, carrots, potatoes and onions.
The producers co-ops mandate includes increasing food
security in the region while assisting farmers to access
new markets and to grow, process and store more food
for local consumption. The co-op hopes to also promote
an even greater appreciation among consumers for local,
sustainably produced crops, meat and other edible products. Growers, secondary processors and other interested
people are invited to attend the AGM. As well as the election, there will be a discussion about the co-ops services,
future plans and the advantages of working together. For
