Perquisites/Before You Start:

**Skip ahead if this is a brand new server from Dell**

1. Choose an operating system.
a. Typically go for whatever is the latest. At time of writing: Windows Server
2012.
2. Copy the operating system to USB/DVD.
3. Install the OS.
a. Partition for C:\ should be at least 60GB.
b. After stating the instillation make sure you choose Windows Server 2012
Standard (Server with a GUI) or you wont have a GUI.
i. If using a different server OS choose whatever the similar option s for
that.

Initial Setup
1. Create an administrator password and login to the server.
2. Rename the computer and join it to the domain.
a. In Server Manager (opens by default), select Local Server on the left pane.
b. Click the current Computer name to open the dialog box to change it.
c. Click Change
d. Type in the name of the domain controller. (<Property>-DC<#>)
e. Select Domain:
i. Type in morrismultimedia.com.
ii. Click OK.
iii. Enter your username/password to authenticate.
f. The server will prompt you to reboot.
3. After the reboot, login with your @morrismultimedia.com credentials.
4. Open Server Manager (if it doesnt open automatically).
a. Click Manage in the top right.
i. Add Roles and Features. > next
ii. Choose Role-based or feature-based installation.
iii. Select your server.
iv. Choose the following Roles:
1. Active Directory Domain Services
2. DHCP Server
3. DNS Server
4. File and Storage Services (Should be automatically installed)
5. Remote Desktop Services
v. Feature
1. WINS Server
2. Leave anything automatically checked
vi. Continue through the prompts until Role Services under Remote
Desktop Services
1. Check all role services except for Remote Desktop Virtualization
Host

vii. Click all the way though and hit install

5. Install Windows Updates

Promoting to a Domain Controller

**This is for Windows Server 2012**

1. Once the roles are installed, a notification will remind you to promote the server. Click
on Promote this server to a domain controller.

2. In the dialog that pops up, choose the following options.

a. Add a domain controller to an existing domain.
i. Domain: morrismultimedia.com
ii. Credentials: your username/password
b. On the domain controller options screen select the following:
i. Domain Name System (DNS) Server
c. Continue through the rest of the defaults and click Install at the end.
d. You must reboot to complete the promotion.
**This is for Windows Server 2008**

Start -> type dcpromo in search -> Enter

A configuration wizard will open. Click Advanced mode installation and proceed.
When asked for the domain, use morrismultimedia.com.
Ensure that you select: Add a domain controller to an existing domain.
Select DNS Server on the DC Options page.
Finish and reboot the server.

Configure DHCP (if necessary, some phone systems

handle this)

1. Start -> Administrative Tools -> DHCP

2. Right click IPv4 -> New Scope
a. Give it a name (Property name)
b. Give it a range, we typically start at xxx.xxx.xxx.100 and go to
xxx.xxx.xxx.200, but YMMV depending on the property size.
c. In some cases, special DHCP options need to be entered for the phone
system to work properly. Ask for help.
