What are the first things that come
to mind when you look at the photo of
this kitchen? Stylish? Unique? But did
you think Reuse? Take a closer look.
The cabinetry is a gathering of re-
cycled pieces including a store display
– it has been raised on furniture feet to
normal counter height.
Behind the sink, bits of broken tile
from a bathroom remodel were used to
create a mosaic.
Vent piping left over from a ware-
house install has been left exposed,
adding a loft look to the space.
On the floor is a novel checkerboard
of sealed, plywood-chip subflooring.
Pendant lights formerly in an of-
fice are lined up on a diagonal over
the island.
Reuse has been around forever but
it is really coming into its heyday once
again. This new wave of “affordable
green” has grown out of the focus to
save things that have value instead
of crushing everything with a sledge
hammer. Nevada County Recycles
wants you to consider reusing materi-
als when remodeling or building, and

Every home is different in energy
usage and alternatives to reduce costs.
In our climate and geographic area,
many homes are heated with propane
or wood stoves. Photovoltaic solar
systems make no impact on this type
of energy consumption or contribute
to the comfort of the home. An all
electric home with leaky ductwork
and poor insulation will not get the full
benefit from solar either.
A best practices approach is to make
the home perform efficiently first and
then add a smaller solar system. Ef-
ficient upgrades come from a range of
options. Insulation and air sealing are
two of the most cost effective ways to
get both a comfortable home and re-
duce energy usage. Properly sized and
installed Air conditioning / Furnace
equipment and ductwork can increase
the comfort level of the home and re-
duce energy costs. Replacing old win-
dows and doors will help seal the home
as well as cut down on heat and cool-
ing loses. Indoor air quality can be im-
proved through these measures a well.

how implementing our recommenda-
tions can save you in energy costs as

the revised energy use. By following

get the same results as a much larger

The pool plumbing, pump/filter
system, plaster and tile were also
replaced. The total square foot-

In 1993 the EPA concluded “geo-
thermal technologies represent a
major opportunity for reducing
national energy use and pollution,
while delivering comfort, reliabil-
ity and savings to homeowners”
(IGSHPA website). What are geo-
thermal ground source heat pumps
(GSHP)? GSHP are electrically
powered systems that tap into the
stored energy of the earth. They
use the constant temperature to
heat and cool homes and their hot
water. You can tap into the earth’s
energy by using closed loop sys-
tems that are buried beneath the
ground either horizontal, vertical
or under a lake, or pond. These
systems can be used in residential
or commercial applications.
Geothermal ground source heat pumps (GSHP)
Solar thermal hot water systems
are another energy efficient way to
go. Solar water heating alone is a
great idea for many applications,
but a fully integrated, high efficient
solar hot water hydronic system is
a better answer to whole house ef-
ficiency. A system like the Phoenix
Ultra High Efficiency Solar hot wa-
ter heater manufactured by Heat
Transfer Products can produce 50
to 70 percent of your domestic hot
water with the solar transfer unit
alone. The solar transfer unit will
also feed your radiant/hydronic
system. When the conventional gas
fired backup systems comes on it
fires at a 92-98% efficiency creating
a very clean and sensible solution
to your domestic hot water and ra-
diant/hydronic needs. This Phoe-
nix Solar system is pre-approved
for the OG 300 SRCC rebates for in-
stalling energy efficient products.
PEX piping is on its way to take
over much of the copper tubing in-
stalled in homes and commercial
buildings. There are many disad-
vantages to using copper includ-
ing corrosion and cost. PEX piping
systems are easier to install, less ex-
pensive, doesn’t corrode or develop
pinholes, carries a longer life and
are much quieter systems. Along
with these advantages PEX piping
does not readily transfer heat like
copper piping, keeping your hot

As the weather warms, yard
care becomes a priority. This sea-

problems due to the freezing con-
ditions of the winter. Water waste
will be higher than usual when un-

themselves. The smallest leak can
waste gallons of water over the
course of the irrigation season. It is
important to assess irrigation sys-
tems for broken pipes and sprat
heads then make a list for replace-
ment parts.
Here is a tip on water conser-
vation from the experts at Sierra
Plumbing Supply. Allow lawn wa-
tering systems to cycle. If you usu-
ally water your lawn for 60 minutes
at a time, try watering for 15 min-
utes and letting the water soak in
for 30 minutes. Run the cycle twice
more. Each time the water will pen-
etrate into the root zone with no
run off. This also cuts 15 minutes
off your watering time, which adds
up over the season and is perfect
for conserving your water, yet you
still have a beautiful lawn.
Some important information to
keep in mind regarding irrigation
when using a well is that it is a
good idea to allow your well to rest
after each station finishes running.

The rule is, if your station runs for
30 minutes, allow the well to rest
for 30 minutes before the next sta-
tion starts. This will let your well
recover and not take a toll on your
water table.
It doesn’t have to be expensive to
grow the best grass in the neighbor-
hood. Toro has introduced pop-up
spray heads that reduce the amount
of water that you are currently us-
unscrewing your old spray heads
and screwing on the new ones.
When hot temperatures come
you should raise your mower to
the highest setting. The longer
grass blades will shade the soil
and roots to help lessen water
evaporation. Lighter and more
frequent fertilization will also
keep your lawns from consuming
more water.

looking for a new clothes washer or dryer.

models that have come out over the last

T
he move in the building indus-
try is now looking at the home
as a system. Instead of focus-
ing on a part of the efficiency of a home
such as lighting, the current trend is now
looking at the overall performance of the
home as a whole such as HVAC, plumb-
ing and electrical. These are all systems
individually, but when all these systems
are looked at collectively as a whole,
the design of each of these systems then
works for the overall performance of the
home. This idea has come to be known as
the “Whole Home Energy Efficient Ret-
rofit” approach. Tekton’s E2 Home Sys-
tem is a step up from the Whole Home
Energy Efficient Retrofit, tacking on so-
lar PV systems (electric) and solar water
heating systems. The E2 Home System
starts with a home energy analysis and
then designs a system which combines a
solar PV system with a solar hot water
heating system along with added energy
saving devices and home retrofitting to
address the whole home solution.
Home performance contracting and
energy retrofitting begins with an energy
analysis or audit. This determines what
shape the house is in, what systems are
working and the efficiency level of the
home. After determining the homeown-
ers concerns on health, comfort and util-
ity savings, an energy retrofitting system
is designed to meet the individual needs
of the homeowner and the home, by inte-
grating all the specific aspects of a home
into a whole.
For example, a solar company talks to
the homeowner and proposes to install
a 3.5KW solar PV (electric) system for
$30K (17K net after rebates) and informs
the owner that it will reduce his electri-
cal bill by 75%, which is a 40% overall
reduction in energy bills. Then another
contractor approaches this same client
and proposes to him the idea of a home
energy retrofit. His scope of work is to
seal up the leaky duct system, put in-
sulation in the attic, change his lighting
to compact fluorescents and he recom-
mends the purchase of an energy star re-
frigerator. The contractor claims that the
owner should see the same 40% overall
reduction in his utility bills. Both these
systems will save the client $825 a year.
The PV system cost is $28,000 and the
retrofit cost is $10,800.
But let’s not negate the fact that the
owner is environmentally conscious and
wants to get off of dirty power. He likes
the idea that his home will be more com-
