televised contest

For a while they thought they were
going to win the $10,000 prize again, but
when the judges’ decision was announced,
it was second place for Manistee award-
winning cake decorator Jennifer Dontz in
the episode of the TLC Network program
“Ultimate Cake Off” that was aired this
past week.
Dontz said that when the decision
came down in the final minutes of the
show between her team and one from
Pennsylvania after a third team was elimi-
nated, she thought just maybe they would
get the prize.
The Manistee woman owns and oper-
ates Sugar Delites and was on a team
led by Martha Hebert and her business
partner Becky Guidry of St. Martinville,
La. as well as Denise Talbot of Nederland,
Texas.
The same four-person team did win
the $10,000 prize during a September
episode.
The show that aired Monday night was
filmed in January in Los Angeles. The Unlimited Golf for
theme was “Fairy Tale Wedding,” and the
competition is winner take all. 2010 & 2011
“That’s right, it’s win or lose, totally,”
Dontz said. “The teams that lose in most
cases spend more on travel and accom-
modations than the allowance from the
show. The thing people don’t understand
about these compeitions is how expensive
they are, and all of the expenses are on
the shoulders of the team leader. You can
easily have $5,000 in it by the time you
bring a team and pay for food and room
and airline tickets and everything.
“But I guess it’s just the love of the art
that makes it worth the expense for the
opportunity,” she said.
The promotion for the latest episode
called it “the most intense Ultimate Cake
Off ever” and said that “the pressure of
the competition caused some of the deco-
rators to break down in tears.”
Dontz said that the one hour show that
capsulizes the nine hours of competition

Dontz said that
although they were just
happy to be in the compe-
tition, still, they were dis-
appointed that they didn’t
win.
“The day was super
long,” she said. “The clock
started at 6 a.m. and we
were totally exhausted by
the time it ended. It’s hard
to describe. You’re just
very, very tired.”
She said after the nine
hours of competition, each
team has to present their
cake, then they were sent
to dinner while the judges
deliberated for several
more hours.
Dontz said she was
also disappointed that the
judges criticized a com-
puter her team used to cut
out some of the patterns
for the cake.
“I was super surprised
that they were so nega-
tive about it. Other teams
had used it before. All the
designs that we did with it
were original, and I don’t
see where there’s much of
a difference from cutting
the designs other ways.”
As was the case when
she was on the program
last fall, she is hearing
from a lot of friends who
watched the show. One
of her fans was particu-
larly disappointed with the
judges’ decision. Dontz
said she laughed when the
friend said, “I haven’t been

and Natural Resources

the U.S. Forest Service,
Tom Tidwell. Awards go
to Forest Service
employees and their

servation organizations,
universities, volunteers,

The Huron-Manistee
employees will receive
this award for their work
in the conservation of the
Karner blue butterfly.
This annual event cel-
ebrates exceptional work
that conserves birds,
bats, and butterflies and
their habitats across the
Americas. All of these
species are important, not
only for their ecological
roles, but also for their
intrinsic beauty and the
roles they play in human
culture. Unfortunately,
