To provide relevant information on personal wellness by connecting

LETTER FROM THE TE

magazine
Its that time of year again! The holidays are here, and
have a tendency to take over the month of December. Weekend plans, concerts and baking days fill
our calendars. Snow days and twinkling lights are
reintroduced in our neighborhoods. Theres so
much nostalgia surrounding these days that a lot of
us wish they would last forever.
The hustle and bustle and overall fullness of the
month can also sometimes be overwhelming and
stressful, but the small reminders of the simple joys
that fill the air bring us right back to the feel-good
aspect of it all.
Gratitude is important all year round, but is
seemingly most abundant during this season. We
at Natures Pathways have a lot to be grateful for,
and cant help but feel especially lucky to be able to
share community experts and their wisdom with
readers around the state. Our December issue holds
what the holidays do: different perspectives, advice,
knowledge and an overall solidarity in its mission to
help those around us.

Palliative care
and
hospice

By Katie Hilst, DVM

hat is palliative care? Is it hospice? How does it apply to

our pets? Palliative care is care for patients that are facing
a serious illness, and is focused on providing relief from
pain and other debilitating symptoms. It is defined as relieving or
soothing the symptoms of a disease or disorder; however, it is not
focused on curing the illness. A patient may receive palliative care
and recover from the illness, but often palliative care is spoken of
with hospice care. Hospice care is care for patients that are terminally ill and dying from a disease. Hospice is built around the key
concept that the dying patient has physical, psychological, social,
and spiritual aspects of suffering. Hospice is a philosophy, not a
specific place. The core structure of hospice includes an interdisciplinary team that provides access to a wide range of services to
support the primary caregiver, who is responsible for the majority
of patient care. Pet hospice has significant differences from human
hospice, the most important being that we can offer peaceful release
from suffering with euthanasia for our pets.
Palliative care is an important component of a hospice care plan
for our pets. Hospice and palliative care require a plan to address
who, what, where and how the pet will be provided care. There are
many people that may be included in a pets hospice team: family,
veterinarians and other veterinary professionals, friends and relatives, pet sitters, grief counselors, and other end-of-life service
providers. Hospice for people is usually offered in the patients
home, or other home like setting. Hospice for pets is similar, with
the family being the primary caregivers, and usually taking on the
majority of the pet care, although others may come to the home to
assist the family, and the pet may go to the veterinary clinic for some
procedures and care. Hospice and palliative care requires a plan
of care for the pet. This plan will address the pets pain, and other
8

Natures Pathways | December 2015

sources of suffering such as nausea, difficulty breathing, mobility

trouble, anxiety, and social isolation. The plan is drawn up with the
veterinarians direction and family input, and may provide medications to address pain, nausea, dehydration and anxiety. There may
be physical aids, such as harnesses or straps to help the pet stand
and walk, or things such as frequent turning the pet to avoid pressure sores. Pet hospice requires assessment of the familys needs and
abilities as well. Sometimes the amount of care a pet requires to be
comfortable may not be achievable by individuals and/or families
and at this point peaceful euthanasia of the pet should be discussed
by the team. Ongoing pet quality of life assessments are key to help
determine the pets comfort level. The JOURNEYS Quality of Life
Scale can be used on a regular basis to score the pets comfort level
and make adjustments in the care plan as necessary.
The goal of hospice and palliative care is to keep the pet comfortable during the last phase of a terminal illness. When the pet is
no longer comfortable, and the caretakers are not able to provide
the care, that may be because there is no further care available to
help the pet, or because the care needed just isnt achievable by the
family or hospice care team. The pet should have the final gift of
a peaceful death.
Dr. Katie Hilst founded Journeys Home Pet Euthanasia LLC, a mobile veterinary
service for the Madison area and surrounding communities. She offers compassionate, gentle euthanasia for families in the privacy of home. She specializes in
pet quality of life consultations. She received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine
degree from UW-Madison in 2002, is certified in Pet Loss and Grief Companioning and is a member of the International Association of Animal Hospice and

Gluttony
trifecta!

By Kirsty Blattner

alloween is past us, Thanksgiving has been and gone,

now Christmas is just around the corner! How are you
feeling? My guess is you are feeling awesome, energized
and satiated or not!
There are different ways to approach holiday overeating, feeling
lethargic and having sugar crashes.

Seven sensational suggestions:

1. Give yourself a hug and recognize that holiday overeating

is more complex than you may think.
2. Ask yourself what the positive intentions of your overeating were. This may be things like enjoying tradition, wanting to
feel comforted or a need for pleasure. When you recognize these,
its easier to acknowledge that your body and mind are doing the
best they can to keep you happy! You can also make a conscious
decision to get these positive intentions met in a healthier way.
3. Set healthfull goals that are easily achievable. When you
set up a pattern of achievement, you get more confident. When
confidence increases, you are able to set more challenging goals.
4. Find support and an accountability person. This may be in
the form of a certified health coach, mentor, nutritionalist, friend
or family member.
5. Recognize that you have bioindividuality. This means
that some diets or ways of eating are perfect for some people and
not for others. Listen to your body and feel what foods give you
energy. Eat more foods that energize you and less that leave you
feeling lethargic.
6. Eat 5-8 servings of fruit and veggies every day! Dont get
too hung up on what types of fruits and vegetables. Roughly the
size of the palm of your hand is one serving, e.g. one banana =
one serving, a handful of grapes = 1 serving, half an avocado =
1 serving, a carrot = 1 serving, an apple = 1 serving. An amazing
difference will occur in your life when you do this. Your body will
be receiving nutritionally dense food and you will feel less power
in your cravings and find it easier not to overeat. Dont take my
word for it experience it yourself.
www.naturespathways.com

7. Stop eating when you are full. You may have heard this
before. You may not have heard this next part! If you are still
hungry 5 seconds later, have some more. The idea is that you train
your body and mind to start to recognize when you are satiated.
The other idea is that your body does not fear being hungry. If you
stop because you think you are full, then a little while later you feel
hunger again. Trust your instincts and eat more. Stop again when
you feel full. Like everything, the more you do this, the better you
will get at perceiving your fullness.

Let me know how I can assist you with your health journey and
have a very Merry Holiday Season!
Cheers,

The gift
blanket,
potlatch and
the
sweat lodge

By Ken-Adi Ring

hroughout America we reserve the end of the year for gratitude and gift-giving traditions, though gifting is common to
many cultures. Our holiday for recognizing it is Christmas.
It is a revered holiday period acknowledged throughout the world,
where on the one hand we remember one of the most important
births in history: that of Christ Jesus. On the other hand this season
in the US, at least, has been a much commercialized time of the
year. The season is the bread and butter of many businesses. It is
encouraged here for people to buy local gifts and crafts, and items
made in America. We turn now to a sacred aspect inherent in the
giving and receiving process expressed in the Gift Blanket Giveaway, a Native American ritual many communities celebrated faithfully dating back centuries. One of the very common practices of
virtually every American Indian nation is some form of what is
called otuhan in Lakota and in English a giveaway. Ritual is what
helps build trust and faith when people get together to gather and
share what they have in community celebrations, expressing simply
the generosity of one to another.
The gift blanket is where gifts are brought to share with others,

and connected with a celebration. These celebrations were,

and are, held for a variety of reasons most usually celebrating a
wedding or marriage union, a birth or even for a memorial or
burial ceremony. A potlatch is often a given/shared in many of
these gatherings. The social, religious and economic significance
was a major part of this celebration for often combined purposes
including a show of wealth, power, competition and peace, and
often hosted by those members of the tribe or society with surplus
of food and supplies. Often more than one clan would share in the
tribal event and share in the giving and receiving of the bounty.
I was first introduced to this gift blanket ritual celebration at
a Pow Wow at Madison Area Technical College. Then a potlatch
after a sacred sweat lodge ceremony where a prayer ritual was
common; in fact, the reason for such a ceremony was often done
as a healing ritual for all participating in it or for a specific member
of the community needing a special healing, then referred to as
a medicine sweat lodge. A potlatch or meal would follow most
sweat lodge rituals. In the late 20th century after experiencing
many sweats, we included it in a celebration and learning weekend
experience called the Mother Earth Festival Gathering. A sweat
lodge and gift blanket ceremony became key elements of the event
held every Memorial Day weekend.
This historic ritual became very meaningful and important
for us as we facilitated many in ritual. For many, it was their first
exposure and rite of passage significance. Mother Earth Festival Gathering had as many as four sweat lodge prayer rituals all
occurring Saturday evening, beginning at sunset or sometimes a
sunrise sweat Sunday morning. Creating the sacred container of
the lodge was a learning process built from scratch where the fire
pit was created along with an altar and the lodge setup each year.
Volunteers would gather, the stone elders (softball or larger sized
stones) placed in the pit and they would cook in the fire while
the lodge was being constructed, tying the willows, covering with
canvas and other breathable material, creating tobacco prayer ties
www.naturespathways.com

and everyone that wanted to would enter the lodge with the door
facing toward the east, representing new beginnings. Many other
workshops were offered and vegetarian meals were shared.
The crowning event to close the gathering was the Gift Blanket
Giveaway ritual shared by attendees who were encouraged to
bring something meaningful to the ritual that had served its
purpose from their lives or something purchased for the occasion and they were ready to gift to another. We would gather in
sacred circle and sing and share dance movement and settle in
around the blanket of gifts some wrapped, others not. The final
song goes like this, From you I receive to you I give, together we
share, from this we live and after a moment of reverent silence
we would begin the giveaway; each in turn beginning with the
youngest would take the rattle and circle the blanket as drumming
and singing would continue, then picking a gift off the blanket.
The gratitude process was finding the person who placed it there
and sharing a gratitude moment, a shared hug and passing the
rattle to the giver. This process would continue with a sense of
expectation and grace until all were served and special moments
were shared. This was a memorable closing ceremony to a terrific
transformational and educational weekend experience, followed
by a great final meal shared by all.
We often still get together and share the Gift Blanket
Ceremony around the winter solstice.

How to help
kids find
extracurricular
activities

ports may be the first thing that

comes to mind when many parents
think of extracurricular activities
for their children, but not all kids are cut
out for or interested in competitive athletics. But just because a youngster may not
be the next star quarterback or captain of
the soccer team does not mean he or she
cant find an extracurricular activity to be
passionate about.
Parents know that schoolwork comes
first, but extracurricular activities can
be important to a childs development,

serving as an avenue to meet new people

and an opportunity to learn the importance of teamwork. The following are a
handful of things parents should consider
when trying to help their children find the
right extracurricular activities.

Interests

One of the easiest ways to help kids find

an extracurricular activity they can be
passionate about is to discuss their interests with them. Youngsters with a love of
animals might enjoy volunteering at a local
animal shelter or hospital, while those
who love to write may find writing for the
school newspaper is a great way to apply
that passion in a practical setting. Even
kids with a passion for video games might
be interested in learning about computer
graphics and what it takes to design games.
When trying to find extracurricular activities for your children, resist the urge to
write off any of their interests. Instead, use
those interests as jumping off points to
further engage their passions.

Availability

Parents know that school comes before

extracurricular activities, but kids may
not be so wise. Keep in mind kids existing workloads when helping them find the
right afterschool activities. Many organizations are especially flexible with teenage
volunteers or employees, but parents still
must keep a watchful eye to ensure kids
do not overextend themselves. Kids who

overcommit to extracurricular activities

may end up feeling burnt out, which can
have a negative impact on their schoolwork. Encourage kids to find activities they care about, but emphasize that
these activities should not become bigger
priorities than schoolwork. Let kids know
that they can get more involved during
summer vacation, but make sure kids dont
devote too much of their time to afterschool activities during the school year. A
couple of hours per week and even some
additional time on the weekends should
not distract kids from their responsibilities at school, and thats still ample time for
kids to explore their interests.

Internships

Internships were once exclusive to college

students, but many organizations now offer
internship opportunities to high schoolers
as well. Kids who find themselves interested
in particular subjects at school, whether its
graphic design or a beginners course on
finance, may be eligible for internships with
local companies. Such opportunities may
even encourage kids to pursue a particular
course of study once they enter college.
Extracurricular activities can help youngsters develop into well-rounded adults.
Parents can help kids find the right activities while still encouraging them to keep
schoolwork atop their priority lists.

What is
a dental
crown?

By Amy L. Sergeant, DDS

dental crown is a tooth-shaped

cap that is placed over a tooth to
cover the tooth to restore its shape
and size, strength and improve its appearance. The crowns, when cemented into
place, cover the visible portion of a tooth
that lies at and above the gum line. When
done in a tooth colored material, they
cannot be distinguished from natural teeth.

Why is a dental crown needed?

To protect a weak tooth (from decay,

for instance) from breaking or to hold

together parts of a cracked tooth
To restore an already broken tooth or
a tooth that has been severely worn
down
To cover and support a tooth with a
large filling when there isnt a lot of
tooth left
To hold a dental bridge in place
To cover misshaped or severely
discolored teeth
To cover a dental implant
To make a cosmetic modification
After a root canal procedure has been
performed

What types of crowns are

available?

Permanent crowns can be made from

stainless steel (for children), all metal
(such as gold), porcelain-fused-to-metal,
or tooth colored ceramic.
www.naturespathways.com

Metal crowns are typically made of a

high noble alloy of metals, primarily gold.
Compared with other crown types, less
tooth structure needs to be removed with
metal crowns, and tooth wear to opposing
teeth is kept to a minimum. Metal crowns
withstand biting and chewing forces well
and may have the most longevity in the
mouth. Also, metal crowns rarely chip or
break. The metallic, silver or gold color is
the main drawback.

Next to all-ceramic crowns (discussed

next), porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns
look most like normal teeth. However,
sometimes the metal underlying the
crowns porcelain can show through as a
dark line, especially at the gum line and
even more so if your gums recede.
All-ceramic or all-porcelain dental
crowns provide better natural color match
than any other crown type and may

A novel way to manage stress

mental and emotional responses.

Its important to take seriously the negative impact stress can
have. Everyday stress becomes so common that it becomes our
new normal. As our stress level increases, so does our perception of what normal stress feels like.
Stress has been linked to all the leading causes of death, such
as cardiovascular disease, cancer, accidents and suicide. Almost
90 percent of all visits to primary health care providers are due to
stress-related problems.
Stress can be physical and emotional. I think its fascinating that
the body is very literal. Heart strings (tendons) inside the human
heart can cause chronic pain after deep emotional trauma. Activated cells in the tendons are themselves responsible for producing biochemical substances that can cause pain, and the tendons
may even break due to a surge of stress hormones. Thus a broken
heart can be very real due to emotional trauma.
Many things can cause a person to feel that their heart has been
broken. Most commonly, we think of a romantic breakup, which
indeed makes the list of the top five stressful situations. But there
are other things that cause the sense of loss that leads to emotional
trauma.
The top five are:
1. Death of a loved one
2. Divorce
3. Moving
4. Major illness
5. Job loss
Sometimes, these things happen one at a time, with space to heal
in between. Sometimes, you get a whole cluster of trouble dumped
on you. Sometimes something is so painful, its difficult to recover.
Its not uncommon to feel stress over happy events. Events such
as the birth of a child, getting married, or a new job can lead to
www.naturespathways.com

stress. Even though these are joyous occasions, they are stressful.
Why? They disrupt our lifestyle.
Are you sensing any sort of pattern here with regard to stress?
Each of these stressors all have one thing in common they
disrupt our lives. We dont like to have our lives disrupted and
when it happens, even if it is a good disruption, it causes stress. A
bad disruption can cause emotionally traumatic stress.
We cannot go through life in a protective bubble. We are going
to experience stressful situations throughout our lives. It all comes
down to how well we can manage stress and find what works for us.
The Amethyst BioMat is thermo-electrotherapy and it uses far
infrared and negative ions to help manage, relieve and even eliminate stress. The first thing clients notice is the soothing, relaxing
feeling of warmth. This is a different warmth than you feel from
a heating pad, your car seat heaters, or even your fireplace. This
feels more like the blissful warmth of the sun on a warm, sunny
day! The amethyst crystals allow the healing rays of the far infrared to penetrate 6-8 inches into your body, literally warming you
from the inside out!
Besides relaxing physically, you will likely find yourself transported to new heights of tranquility and relaxation. The BioMat
has a direct effect on your brainwaves and on your hormones,
creating a deeply relaxing, meditative, and some even say
hypnotic, state of mind.
Did you know that research studies prove that stress hormones,
including cortisol, are reduced by 78 percent with the BioMat? This
allows for the deepest, most restorative sleep, and the most amazing
relaxation and meditative experience youve likely ever had!
In addition to relaxation, the BioMat relieves pain and inflammation. Pain is often the outcome of runaway stress. By increasing circulation, metabolism, and oxygenation, muscles loosen and
joint pain is relieved. Tension headaches and fibromyalgia-like
symptoms are minimized or eliminated as well.
Whats great is that you have the option of how you would like
to use the BioMat. You can enjoy the tranquil and soothing environment of experiencing your sessions at a healing center like
Luminous Lotus Healing. Or, if you prefer to take control of your
health and happiness, BioMat is available for purchase. You can
relax onto it wherever and whenever you like! Whether its at work
or at home, in your favorite chair, or in your bed, youll wonder
how you went so long without one!
In conjunction with a healthy lifestyle, BioMat therapy is an
extremely effective way of managing stress. The next time you
find yourself stressed out, consider the BioMat to unwind, rest
and relax.

WHAT IS A DENTAL CROWN continued from page 13

be more suitable for people with metal allergies. With recent

improvements in materials, these crowns are very strong and
durable. All-ceramic crowns are a good choice for most teeth in
the mouth, especially if an individual does not have a habit of
grinding or display excessive wear on his/her teeth.

Remember that simply

because a tooth has a
crown does not mean the
tooth is protected from
decay or gum disease.
What steps are involved in preparing a tooth for
a crown?

Preparing a tooth for a crown typically requires two visits to the

dentist. The first step involves examining and preparing the tooth,
the second visit involves placement of the permanent crown.
With recent advances in dental technology, there is also a onevisit option known as a CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics). With this CAD/CAM technology,
the tooth is prepared and the crown is created right in the office
and placed within the same appointment; no return trip and no
temporary crown is necessary.

How long do dental crowns last?

On average, dental crowns last between 5 and 15 years. The life

span of a crown depends on the amount of wear and tear the
crown is exposed to, how well you follow good oral hygiene practices and your personal mouth-related habits (grinding or clenching your teeth, chewing ice, biting fingernails and using your teeth
to open packaging). The life span of a crown depends more on the
daily activities performed at home than the activities performed
every 6 months at the dental office.
Remember that simply because a tooth has a crown does not
mean the tooth is protected from decay or gum disease. Therefore,
continue to follow good oral hygiene practices, including brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing once a day especially around the crown area where the gum meets the tooth. It is
also very important to keep up with your regular dental visits and
radiographs so if a problem is present, it is diagnosed early.

The howl-days
for
your pet!

By Michelle Lonergan

uring the busy holiday season, there are so many things

to remember, and many times ensuring the house is safe
for your family pet can fall to the wayside. Simple things
like a change in schedule, decorations or even a Christmas tree
can cause danger for your pets. Did you know that just the change
in environment, with the added decorations and slight change in
schedule with all the holiday parties, can cause GI upset in your
pet or at the very least, additional anxiety?
While we cant always help the go-go mentality this time of year,
we can do several things to make sure that we are taking care of
our pets. First, make sure that they are getting plenty of exercise!
If you cant get them to the park or out for a nice long walk, then
think about adding day care a couple of days a week for the holiday
season. The added exercise helps dogs to expend some of that additional anxiety through physical activity. It also helps get them good
and tired for those evenings you have activities planned for the
family or a holiday party with several guests.

Overeating can be deadly for your pet!

As tempting as it is to invite your family pet to the feast, such overindulging can cause pancreatitis and can be fatal! The well-recognized cause of pancreatitis in dogs is the ingestion of an atypical
meal containing high levels of fat. The symptoms of pancreatitis
in dogs can be rather vague. Most dogs have some combination of
poor appetite, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain.
If you want your pet to join in the feast, feed them no more than
1/3 of their meal with lean meat mixed with 2/3 of their regular diet.
Dont add in the excess fat and leave out the starchy foods. After
being tempted all day with the lip smacking smells wafting in the air
all day, they will be plenty happy to get a bite of the meaty turkey!

Beware of toxic holiday plants!

Many plants that we bring into the house for the holidays can pose
a risk for our pets. While the Christmas tree is not a hazard in
and of itself, the water being accessible to your pet may pose a
hazard. Many trees have been grown with pesticides or fertilizers,
which can leach into the water. In addition, more tree farms will
spray paint the trees to help them maintain that lovely green color,
which can also leach into the water.

Natures Pathways | December 2015

The poinsettia is a tradition in our household, but did you know

that the sap of the poinsettia plant is mildly toxic to both cats and
dogs? In addition, my favorite holiday plants, mistletoe and holly,
have a much higher toxicity level for pets. Be sure to contact your
veterinarian immediately if your cat or dog ingests them.

Gifts for the dogs and cats in our lives!

According to a PetFinder.com poll, 63 percent of dog owners and

58 percent of people with cats give their pets holiday presents.
Furthermore, many will include extended family pets in their gift
giving. Dog and cat grandparents are amongst the biggest group
to spoil their grand-dogs and kitties with gifts!
How do you know what to give a family or friends pet for the holidays? To be safe, be sure you give healthy treats free of any wheat or
corn, as many animals have allergies to these ingredients. Also, be
sure any consumables are sourced from the US. Colored rawhides
are unnatural and unhealthy for your pet. Try to avoid the splashy red
and green food colorings! Alternatively, find treats in colorful bags or
wrap a big bone yourself at home with holiday ribbons, and keep the
treat itself free of harmful chemicals.
Toys are always a hit for any dog. Choose from squeakers, balls,
ropes, plush or toys with treat spots. Choose a tougher toy for
the rough players and perhaps a plush toy for seniors or young
puppies. Balls or interactive toys are great for the active labs and
puzzle toys are good for the busy border collies. For the cats in
your life, catnip toys are a hit among most, but anything that
crunches, crackles or comes with bells will do as well!

Turn your pain

into
progress

By Laura Konopacki

hen we are in pain, it can be hard to focus on anything

but getting rid of it. We may feel we are in a fight against
our bodies, and direct all action and remedies toward
treating or suppressing symptoms or disease in the body. We can
end up focusing completely on something thats wrong, and that we
dont want. This is understandable. Were hardwired as a species to
avoid pain to survive. But, that approach can not only be physically
and emotionally draining, its also a very inefficient way to heal.
Have you ever thought about what mindset would give you the
best chance to get well? Along with choosing a team of professionals to assist you on your healing journey, what is it that you can do
on your own to support sustainable change and progress?

Change your focus

If you take whatever youre focusing on and add emotion, that

becomes what you experience as reality.
This includes how you navigate through the challenges brought
with illness. Do you see only your problem, or the opportunities that
can be found in that same situation? Do you focus on what someone
did to hurt you, or what you can do to help yourself and others? Do
you concentrate on avoiding pain (whether its back pain, headaches,
asthma or other conditions) or creating a better future?
These questions can bring up uncomfortable feelings. Especially when were overwhelmed by how challenging things seem.
But if we slowly start to take responsibility for where our focus is,
along with the actions we take, an energy is released that starts
to gain momentum. As this momentum is expressed in our lives,
oftentimes pain, symptoms and disease can powerfully shift.

interact with others, and show up for things that are important to
you? Is your life aligned with what you believe is most important,
or are you engaging in things/with people to maintain the status
quo, or to make other people happy? Do you have any tough decisions youve been avoiding?
These are changes only we can make. No professional, no matter
how gifted, can do it for us.
So get ready to feel a little uncomfortable with this process. And
that makes sense if it was easy, we would have done it a long
time ago. You can look for that sweet spot where you are still
challenging yourself, but not pushing yourself too far into overwhelm. Signs that you are on the right track include increased feelings of energy, connection, vulnerability, openness and humility.
It can be a new perspective to allow our condition to point us
toward a more meaningful life. As symptoms present a chance to
change our focus, a more authentic version of ourselves begins to
emerge. We start to uncover the gifts hidden within our circumstances. We step into powerful ways of living that set us up for the
best chance to turn pain into progress and create a different future.

could benefit?

Ask yourself the right questions

Once people start to look at their disease as an opportunity to live

more powerfully and authentically, we can start to ask ourselves
some important questions. In life, do you tend to take a risk and
express yourself and be vulnerable? Do you value yourself enough
to respectfully state your opinion, even when it may conflict with
that of others? Are you able to prioritize doing things that we all
may want to put off, but over time lead to a better life experience (like exercise, eating well and maintaining strong social
networks). In short, how are you living? How are you choosing to

By Omar

s early as the 1400s, ballads

depicted Robin Hood, with his
band of Merry Men, as robbing
from the rich to give to the poor. Today,
US wealth is highly concentrated among
few people. As of 2010, the top 1 percent
of households, the upper class, owned 35.4
percent of all privately held wealth.
The next 19 percent, mostly managers

and professionals, had 53.5 percent. Just 20

percent of people owned a remarkable 88.9
percent of all wealth, leaving 11.1 percent of
wealth for the bottom 80 percent, comprising mostly wage and salary workers. Eliminating home values, the top 1 percent had
an even greater share, 42.1 percent.
Trends from 1983 to 2010 show an
increase in net worth from 33.8 percent

to 35.4 percent for the top 1 percent,

whereas the bottom 80 percent went from
18.7 percent to a troubling 11.1 percent
of wealth. Historically, such disparities
among social strata have led to revolution.

that 84 percent of Americans nationally
favor requiring background checks on all
firearm purchases.
If by fiat I could improve wealth inequities and control guns, Id do it in a flash.
My purpose here, however, is not to
advocate social revolution or gun control
but to propose that you practice Einstein
Methods! When I want to feel and function better, I practice a few exercises that
always work, and teach them to hundreds
of clients each year.
First, we identify what appears to be our
physical body as our energetic body. It will
include our energetic mind. Second, we
slowly separate our physical body the
one that society uses and abuses from
our energetic body. It will include our egobased judgmental mind. Third, we slowly
separate our spiritual/Christ body the
mediating source of beams and streams of
light and love from the sun, moon, stars,
God, Christ, Buddha, Mohammed, Krishna
from our physical body. Well associate
our super ego with our spiritual body.
We can expect to have the time of our
lives, better than all the amazing vacations
imaginable. We practice drawing lines that

play energetic Robin Hood among our three

bodies by connecting our infinitely powerful spiritual body to move light and love
energies into our energetic body (where we
live) to give our used-and-abused physical
body injections of light and love!

The many benefits of practicing

Einstein Methods:

We quickly start feeling better about

ourselves, which likely afflicts the super

rich as well, when stuck in the belief
that they dont have enough.
We quickly start functioning better,
and can take more effective actions to
rectify discrepancies in imbalanced
situations.
We establish the perspective that
economic inequities only afflict us in
the physical dimension inherently
weak anyway since everything in the
universe is really energy!
Perhaps we embrace the perspective of
Heraclitus of Ephesus (535 BC 475 BC)
that everything changes and nothing
stands still. Whoever we are, whatever our
physical station, our rightful heritage is to

attain spiritual mastery.

Through Einstein Method exercises,
spiritual mastery has practical, beneficial
effects on how we feel and function by
increasing energetic frequencies where
theyre stuck in low gear. Its like selling
weak currencies, likely to become weaker,
to acquire strong currencies whose values
are certain to increase.
Practicing to attain spiritual and energetic mastery also leads us toward mental,
emotional and physical mastery! We can
appreciate that affluence doesnt buy love,
health or happiness. The selfish rich may
die miserable deaths because theyve overlooked whats really important: caring
about and sharing with others.
Well be happy to know that many
super rich people know and appreciate
this. Scores of billionaires have signed The
Giving Pledge, and have pledged to give
away most of their wealth for humanitys
good by the time they die.
Shall we discuss by email ways that
enlightened affluent people can ameliorate economic imbalances that threaten
Americas viability and constrain us from
having the happy, healthy society that we
deserve?
Omar, who works throughout the
Midwest and beyond continually
improves therapeutic treatments over
75,000 hours practice, blends about
25 modalities into Mind, Body, Spirit
healing sessions. Einstein Methods sessions experientially explore the principle that Energy Is the
Currency of the Cosmos. Sessions multi-task: Your

Skills to support healing; your Subconscious is
directed to support you while you work, play or

How to maintain
workout routines
during the
holidays

etween decking the halls, visiting family and attending holiday

parties, it may seem like there is
little time to maintain a workout routine
during the holiday season. While the
holiday season is an especially busy time of
year, men and women who plan and stay
dedicated to their routines do not need
to let their health fall by the wayside until
January.

Several studies show that

people can gain anywhere
from one pound to a few
pounds between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Although
that might not seem like
a lot of weight, a report in
The New England Journal of
Medicine noted that many
people never lose the weight

they put on during the holidays.

Those who struggle to keep the weight
off understand the importance of maintaining both a consistent fitness schedule
and healthy eating habits. This may be challenging when the rich foods and parties
synonymous with the holiday season are
around to threaten healthy habits. Heres
how to stay on course.
ESTABLISH A REGULAR EXERCISE
DATE. Treat exercise as any other obliga-

tion on the calendar. Make it a necessity

and not a luxury. Schedule time for workouts, even if it means removing something
else from your agenda.
DONT WORRY ABOUT THE LENGTH
OF YOUR WORKOUTS. If youre accus-

tomed to an hourlong workout but cannot

fit in more than 20 minutes on some days,
dont skip the workout simply because its
shorter. Make the most of that time by
targeting larger, core muscles.
CHANGE YOUR SCHEDULE. You may

need to alter your daily schedule to fit

in gym workouts or other exercise. Try
getting up earlier and heading out prior
to work or school. This will open up time
throughout the rest of your day, and you
can use that time to meet the demands of
the holiday season.

GET A TRAINER OR A WORKOUT

BUDDY. Its far easier to blow off a workout

when you go it alone. However, if you have

a workout partner who is counting on you
and vice versa, you may be less inclined
to miss a workout - even when youre not
especially motivated to hit the gym.
TRY NEW ACTIVITIES. Workouts need

not be limited to exercises in the gym.

Plenty of activities work the body and burn
calories. Sledding, ice skating, skiing, and
snowboarding are just a few winter sports
that can help you stay in shape.
CHOOSE A HOTEL WITH A POOL OR
GYM. If holiday travel is on your itiner-

ary, select a hotel that has fitness equipment. This way you can keep up with your
routine. Even swimming a few laps in an
indoor pool can provide a cardiovascular
workout while youre on vacation. Remember, it only takes a two-week break from
exercise to experience a fitness regression,
and you will only have to work harder to
get back to your current fitness level if you
let exercise slide too long.
ADD
SHORT,
HIGH-INTENSITY
EXERCISES. Burn more calories in less

time with high-intensity workouts. This

way you wont need to schedule as much
time for workouts but will still get the

benefit of exercise.
TRANSFORM CHORES INTO EXERCISE OPPORTUNITIES. See that

vacuum cleaner, rake or broom as a piece

of exercise equipment. While cleaning up
for holiday company, turn on the radio and
get your heart pumping, too. Do leg raises
while youre preparing meals or do some
pushups off of the kitchen counter.
USE YOUR BODYWEIGHT. Even if you

cant make it to the gym, rely on your own

body resistance for a thorough workout.
Pushups, squats, burpees, mountain
climbers, jumping rope, and lunges are
some exercises that rely on bodyweight for
effectiveness.
PERIODICALLY EXERCISE DURING
THE DAY. If you have a few free moments

here and there during the day, use these

opportunities to exercise. By the end of
the day, you may find you squeezed in an
entire workouts worth of exercise over the
course of several 10-minute intervals.
Exercise and fitness do not have to play
second fiddle to other holiday activities.
Make time for workouts, and you will be
ahead of the game come the new year.

Restoring
body & mind
Tracy Jobe offers healing massage and more
BY GRACE OLSON
When it comes to her clients experiencing discomfort and pain, Tracy
Jobe hears it all the time: I used to be able to and Im just getting
older. Its a common mindset, but the phrases, and the feelings, dont
have to be. Her business, Restorative Massage LLC, encompasses a
variety of techniques to help combat the sensation of being trapped in
a body that doesnt perform as well as it should.
I love hearing people come in and say that they cant do something
because its such a journey, Tracy says. Its great seeing them be able
to get out and enjoy life again.
Using therapeutic massage and energy work, Tracy has been tapping
into an aspect of health care that has the potential to improve both
body and mind for a variety of ages for over ten years. She credits the
body for its capacity to work through and relieve issues, and therefore
sees herself as a facilitator rather than a cure.
Im always amazed by our bodys own natural ability to heal, Tracy
says. It really does know what to do. Clients often say, Thank you, you
fixed me! but what Im doing is helping give your body what it needs.

A facilitator of your health

journey to well-being

Along with therapeutic massage, Restorative Massage LLC promotes an

overall balance in the body by offering several specialized therapies and
treatments, with the added benefit of Tracy being able to customize
sessions according to clients needs. Nothing is cookie cutter in the healing
space, and her flexible nature lends itself to true therapeutic relaxation.
You will experience a more healing massage, Tracy says. Instead
of the typical therapy session, I combine different techniques for the
individual to offer the most benefits.
It all began with therapeutic massage itself, an important piece of
the restorative puzzle. Tracy explains that while all massage is relaxing,
22

Natures Pathways | December 2015

therapeutic massage directed at myofascial release, trigger point therapy

and deep tissue causes the effects of the massage to last longer and
promote healing in a way that isnt seen with traditional massage.
Restorative Massage LLC also offers bodywork and energy therapy
in the form of four modalities directed toward alleviating pain and
encouraging balance and well-being within our bodies.
Craniosacral therapy has to do with everything from the cranium
to the sacrum, Tracy explains. Its a light touch and very gentle so its
good for people who dont necessarily like the feeling of massage. It
also addresses the craniosacral rhythm, the on and off production of
the cerebral spinal fluid it works on balancing that rhythm.
The therapy also focuses on the fascia inside our cranial bone, which
can affect both emotional and physical pain. Tracy massages the
outside, but craniosacral therapy truly addresses the fascia, the sheet
of connective tissue fibers, primarily collagen, that forms beneath the
skin to attach, stabilize, enclose and separate muscles and other internal organs, and unresolved issues that may be unknown at the time.
Reiki is an energy work, and works closely with the seven chakras
(see the sidebar for more information!) in your body. Tracys goal in
utilizing this technique is in balancing each chakra, and thus promoting the correlating physical body system, which she explains has a lot
to do with our mental health.
We store a lot of emotion in our physical body, she says. When I
do a Reiki session, I make sure the chakras are all balanced, connected
and spinning correctly so everything is working together.
Often referred to as Bars, Access Consciousness Bars is another
aspect of energy work that Tracy uses that specifically deals with
points on your head, and she likens the therapy to something we can
all easily relate to.
When I run Bars, its like deleting old files off of your computer, she
says. It might be limiting beliefs that no longer serve us, or being told
something is a bad idea. As kids, we get really inundated with negative
www.naturespathways.com

information so Bars is a good way to be able to release things that

slow us down and sometimes prohibit us from moving on and moving
forward in a positive direction.
Tracy also uses the Raindrop Technique, a unique body therapy that
holds an energy component and uses aromatherapy, but also cites
scientific reasoning in its therapeutic properties. Essential oils are
dropped 6-12 inches above the spine to fall through the electromagnetic field, or your aura.
All of the oils are picked purposefully because of their properties,
Tracy explains. They kill viruses within the fatty cells of your spine, and
are massaged into the Vita Flex points on your feet, which is similar to
reflexology that go along your spine.
The oils chosen include a balancing blend, oregano, thyme, basil,
wintergreen (or birch), marjoram, cypress, peppermint, a muscle relaxing blend and a soothing massage blend. Detoxification is one of the
main results, but she has also seen clients release things energetically
and emotionally.
I recently met a woman who was dealing with a lot of things
regarding her inner child, and she was able to release those things,
Tracy says. When people set an intention for the session, they usually
set it to themselves, so while it was a relaxing therapeutic session, it
also accomplished exactly what she needed.
The above techniques used at Restorative Massage LLC are extremely
significant in your journey to well-being, but an additional component
is the BioMat, a Food and Drug Administration-approved far infrared
heating mat. In fact, Tracy believes in its ability so much that its a part
of all of the work she does.
All of the services I provide are done on the BioMat, Tracy says.
And its such a great feeling that sometimes people ask, Can I just
come lie on the BioMat? The answer is absolutely!
Restorative Massage LLC encompasses complementary therapies
and treatments that can sometimes be overwhelming, but one of
Tracys favorite parts of her work is in educating her clients and empowering them to take their health and well-being into their own hands.
I really like taking the time to get to know clients, not just because it
helps with the treatment but again because a connection on a personal
level is important to me, she says. Nothing is cookie cutter here, and I
want to provide an education and self-care tips to clients.
The first step? She advises to always recognize your self-worth, and
to keep the bigger picture in mind.
If you come in with an open mind, thats a big part of it, she says.
Dont feel bad for taking the time to take care of yourself. We only
have one physical body in this life, and we have to take care of it.

The seven chakras

As a facilitator of your health, Tracy ensures

that your body is balanced and all components are working together. By recognizing
the chakras, or energy wheels, during Reiki
sessions, she is able to uncover the source
of both emotional and physical symptoms.
The chakras spin clockwise, and each hold
a different significance and focus for your
overall health.
Below are the seven main chakras, their
locations within your body and how they
specifically concentrate on your emotional
and physical well-being.
ROOT CHAKRA: The main chakra
located at the base of the spine, the
root connects us to physical wellness.
NAVAL CHAKRA: Just above the
root chakra in the belly button
region, the naval deals with money
and your sense of belonging.
SOLAR PLEXUS CHAKRA: At
the bottom of the rib cage, the
Solar Plexus focuses on our
personal power and finances.
HEART CHAKRA: Found in the
chest area, Tracy explains that while
the heart chakra is often thought
of in loving other people, it also
largely focuses on self-love.
THROAT CHAKRA: Encompasses
speaking your truth, and being
able to stick up for yourself.
THIRD EYE CHAKRA: Right above
the forehead/middle of forehead,
it is centered on our intuition.
CROWN CHAKRA: Located at the
top of the head, the Crown Chakra
connects us to our higher self and
what we feel connected to spiritually.

What is most
important in
our culture
today?
How should we be spending
our time and energy?

By Ellen Utter

hese are not easy questions and there are too many
responses to count. With the holidays right around the
corner, many would choose from the following list of
wants versus needs: the latest and greatest, biggest and most
cutting edge technological marvels (iPhones, bigger screen TVs,),
bigger dream homes, new top-of-the-line cars, boats, vacation
options, trendiest toys, latest fashionable clothing and accessories,
diamond special of the season, shoes, and on and on.
We live in a very competitive, materialistic society. Some
competition and reward for effort is expected in the wealthiest
nation in the world. We all dream of owning some of these things.
We want to be feel successful. Rewarding ourselves validates the
hard work we do and the sacrifices we make.
I believe in moderation. Its really OK to buy a used car or some other
repurposed item. Dont be so hung up on keeping up with the Joneses.

ever competitive world in researching, shopping, comparing of

makes, models, designs, pricing online, in papers, magazines, and
to own or give the best money can buy. This can turn into added
stress and sometimes poor decision making.
How about taking care of our health, both physically and
mentally so we can get through the holidays without the excessive
weight gain and feeling so stressed out?
How are we treating those around us? Acts of kindness, sharing,
spending time with family and friends seem more important to
me than having the latest whatever it is.
Take time for yourself. Think about what you are eating and
how you are exercising. There is no excuse for not carving out
some time, even minutes a day, for wellness and re-energizing.
Walking, yoga, meditation and relaxing for 10-minute interval
training sessions, a little light weight training, and stretching can
do wonders and make a difference in how we feel about life.
My response to the title questions would not be so materialistic.
I believe in empowering others to feel like theyve accomplished
something, anything. Thats a real gift to give and to receive.

Massage for
grief

By Heidi Aschenbrenner, LMBT, CCT,
BCTMB, Member AOBTA

oes this topic seem out of place to you? I find that the
average person who does not work in bodywork associates massage with a range of things from treating oneself
for a special occasion, to working on a chronic pain problem
to achieve results, to providing therapeutic maintenance to the
muscles we use daily for years and years. Many of you have probably experienced massage in one or more of these capacities, but
not all of you might know the benefits of massage during grief.
Grief is broader than dealing with loss from death; it can be
experienced from any significant change in which you are losing
something that has been a part of you or your life, even it if is
moving onward and forward to something that is better in your
mind. This can be a change of job, change of residence, shifting
relationships as people grow and change, move, or have children
and become less available. It can be giving up certain foods once
you find your body doesnt respond well to them. And of course,
the most painful of all forms of grief is losing a loved one due
to death. All of us experience grief as a natural process of life;
it is vitally important that we acknowledge and feel our grief in
all its painful and shameless glory, to fully let go, heal, and move
forward. Pent up grief manifests itself in many ways in the body,
mind and spirit, and often gets expressed with anger when bottled
up for too long. Grief demands that we let it have its say one way
or another, and its best to let it have its due as you are experiencing your loss. This will not be easy nor will it be pleasant, but it is
necessary for your overall health and well-being.
Now that we are experiencing grief, what next? Many people
have trouble balancing lifes responsibilities while allowing grief
to take its course. Sometimes its small outbursts of emotions
when you can sneak them in during your own private moments
crying in the car is a great emotional outlet; Ive used this many
times after significant losses, and didnt mind so much when I had
a long commute. Allowing yourself these expressions of emotions
whenever you can will help you fully feel, experience and ultimately move through your grief.
Massage is one of those outlets too, particularly when grief or
www.naturespathways.com

trauma is fresh. Massage teams are often in place as part of emergency response after a tragedy such as a plane crash. After the Oklahoma City bombing, the state medical examiner observed that the
massage therapists were accomplishing more in 15 minutes than
psychologists could in an hour or two (Life, Aug. 8, 1997). How
can that be? The need for touch is powerful, and it is often the most
immediate need that we have after tragedy or loss. It allows us to
take a break from lifes responsibilities and just feel for however
long we are in session. We might even cry on the table or massage
chair, and thats not only OK, its good. Its healing. The space of
massage is always a safe place. You can be who you are, wherever
your emotional state might be that day, that hour, that minute.
Massage is still beneficial when grief is not as fresh. As you
have no doubt experienced, grief takes a long time to finally be on
its way, waving goodbye to you from afar and wishing you well.
Grief can feel like a long winter that just doesnt want to let go,
but spring does eventually come. As you move through grief in all
its stages that seem like forever, massage is always that safe space
for you to just feel and be whoever and wherever you are at the
moment. It helps you feel supported so that you can continue to
move forward and survive. It answers that vital need for support
through touch, while at the same time allowing you to be with
your emotions, your mind and your body.

Take charge of
your physical
and emotional
wellness

By Debbie Armstrong, S.N.H.S., DIP

e are entering a season that is often filled with physical and emotional disorders as the hustle and bustle of
the busy holiday season consume our every ounce of
wellness. The pharmaceutical companies would like us to believe
that medications and western medicine are the only protocols to
follow, whether it is for a cold, headache, broken bone or preventative measure. While I am truly grateful that there are doctors
to heal my broken leg or ruptured aorta, I want to take charge of
maintaining and regaining optimal physical and emotional wellness in the most natural, safe, effective and noninvasive means
possible. I also hear this from my clients as well.
If you are looking to take charge of your physical and emotional
wellness, here are some safe, effective, natural and noninvasive
techniques and treatments that I use with clients in my office. In
addition to my office, I can suggest an array of wellness options
as many of these techniques and treatments can be done in the
comfort of your own home or office.

BioMat therapeutic sessions

The Amethyst BioMat uses state-of-the-art technology. It is a

Food and Drug Administration-approved pad that converts electricity into far infrared rays (FIR). FIR is natures invisible light
and was discovered by NASA. It is the safest, most beneficial type
of light waves. The BioMat also utilizes natures energizer (negative ions), to convey a molecular level massage that will accelerate
and deepen every healing and cleansing process.
FIR and negative ions have been found to reduce swelling,
increase blood flow, alleviate allergies, migraines, and sinus problems, and has proven to destroy cancer and viral cells without
damaging surrounding healthy cells. FIR penetrates the body 6-8
inches, which stimulates the rejuvenation and healing of nerves
and muscle tissue.
The third component of the BioMat is the amethyst quartz crystals. Amethyst is considered to be natures super conductor. It is
used to transfer FIR and negative ions into the body. Amethyst
has been found to have the same vibrational frequencies as the
body, which offers a stable and powerful delivery method.
Consumers are enjoying the benefits of the BioMat in spas and
professional offices all over the world. Chiropractors, physical therapists, acupuncturists and natural wellness consultants are realizing the benefits for their clients. Corporations such as Boeing and
Microsoft have placed them in their offices for employees to use. So
start today by being proactive about your health and well-being. A

Maintenance
keeps horses
healthy and
happy
...................................................................

orses are strong animals that have been relied upon for
centuries to fill various roles. Once a primary mode
of transportation for humans, horses also have helped
farmers tend to their crops and entertained millions on the
racetracks.
Since they are social animals, horses need attention and
consistent care. Keeping a horse is quite a commitment, but its a
commitment that can prove very rewarding. Caring for a horses
needs will help keep the animal happy and healthy. Horses require
basic daily care that should be tailored to the season.

Shelter

A horse habitat is an area where the animal can escape the

elements when not grazing. Barns, stalls or even just shade coverings, depending on the area and climate, can make great shelters
for horses. The shelter should not be smaller than 12 square feet.
If a shelter is small, the horse will need to get more daily exercise
to stretch out.
Fencing and gates should be secure. Some horses are smart
enough to get out of paddocks or their stalls simply by opening
the gate. Chains and locks can help prevent escape artists.

Food

Horses are grazing animals and are accustomed to eating all day.
If pastures are green and horses are getting enough grass, they
may not need supplementation with hay. However, if the weather
gets cold and grass is in short supply, horses will need access to
plenty of hay. Many horse owners feed their horses twice a day
and supplement their food with salt or mineral licks. Limit the
amount of oats and sweet treats, especially for animals that arent
as active. A veterinarian also can advise horse owners about the
best types of feed for particular horses based on the animals age,
activity level, gender, and breed.
www.naturespathways.com

Feet and teeth

It is important to maintain the health of a horses feet and teeth.

An inability to grind food properly can prevent a horse from
getting proper nutrition, which is essential to their health. This
is especially true when the weather gets cold and the horse needs
extra energy in colder weather. An equine dentist can examine
a horses teeth and make sure there are no issues preventing the
horse from eating well.
Similarly, a horse spends most of its time on its feet. A farrier
should be called in regularly to inspect hooves and adjust shoes
if they are worn. Rocks, debris, snow, ice, and other items on the
ground can become lodged in the animals feet and cause irritation. Also, clipped hooves will chip less and provide more grip.
Farriers can suggest other tips to keep feet in good health.

Grooming

Daily grooming will help keep a horse comfortable. Brushing the

horses coat provides a good opportunity to spend time with the
animal and further foster a good relationship. A horse will learn
to trust its owner more and more when owners make frequent
contact. Grooming also enables horse owners to inspect their
animals for any cuts, ticks or maladies that should be brought to
the attention of a vet.
Remember to hose down horses after a ride and during hot
weather. Sweat can attract flies, leading to bites and sores. The
Minnesota Horse Council notes that horses that spend substantial
time outside may be susceptible to sunburn. Apply a sunscreen to
the horses nose, especially for light-colored horses. Sunburns can
lead to blistering and infections, so make protecting horses from
the sun a priority.

Protecting your skin

and hair this winter

By Kris Olson

hroughout the Midwest residents are bracing for winter as we

prepare our homes, our yards and
our vehicles for the cold months ahead.
The harsh winter air is also brutal on
our skin and hair, and can have the same
damaging effects as overexposure to the
sun. Many report that they feel their skin
begin to dry out as soon as the temps dip
below 50 degrees. But as there is protection from the sun, there is also protection from old man winter as the cold air
outside and heat inside rob our skin and
hair of natural oils, leaving it dry, flaky,
cracked, and irritated.
Here are some suggestions from dermatologists on routine care and products
specifically formulated for winter to help
28

Natures Pathways | December 2015

us snowbirds through the discomfort of

dry skin.
NO HOT SHOWERS OR BATHS IN
THE WINTER. This may seem like the last

thing you want to do in the cold weather,

but dermatologists warn that hot water
dries the natural oils in your skin and
recommend lukewarm baths and showers.
For dry, itching skin, a lukewarm bath with
oatmeal or baking soda can bring relief if it
is followed by a cream moisturizer. Make
sure you are using the correct products for
your skin type. Keep balance in your skin,
instead of using a cleanser that tightens
and dries your skin, try a cream cleanser
or one that doesnt have suds.

MOISTURIZE, MOISTURIZE, MOISTURIZE. Dermatologists suggest switch-

ing your moisturizing formulas for the

winter from lotions to creams, which are
thicker, take longer to absorb but provide
more lasting protection. While it is not
necessary to purchase expensive products
it is necessary to watch the ingredients in
the products you choose. Look for natural
ingredients that do not contain alcohol but
contain more moisturizing oils such as olive
oil, avocado oil, primrose oil or almond oil.
You should be aware that there is a controversy that shea butter could clog your pores
so you should use sparingly and watch for
signs that this may occur. Moisturize before
you leave the house and moisturize when
you return for the best results.
www.naturespathways.com

IT MIGHT SOUND ELEMENTARY, BUT

WRAP UP WHEN YOU GO OUTSIDE.

The skin that takes the most beating in

winter are the areas that are exposed most
often to the cold, biting air. Your face, neck,
hands ankles and lips suffer the most and
only thick clothing can protect them the
best. These areas also tend to have less skin
and will show signs of damage or aging
first. Dead skin accumulates more rapidly
during the winter so dermatologists tell us
to exfoliate over the winter months to keep
your skin looking renewed. Exfoliation
also aids in absorbing moisturizers into the
skin more rapidly and thoroughly. But they
do not recommend harsh peels or masks
and toners with alcohol.
LIPS SUFFER THE MOST. You can

protect your lips with Vaseline but it is not

a moisturizer. A good lip treatment with
moisturizing natural oil keeps your lips
from becoming chapped. Use this at night
as your breathing dries your lips out as
well. You should exfoliate your lips with a
gentle formula to remove dry skin.
PROTECT YOUR HAIR. We all deal

with static electricity in our hair during the

winter and this is the first sign of dry winter
hair. Treat your hair to an oil treatment prior
to shampooing to keep your hair shiny, silky
and manageable. Olive oil is excellent for
your hair and available in many products.
EAT RIGHT AND STAY HYDRATED.

One controllable defense we have against

the environment is eating a balanced diet
and drinking plenty of water. This keeps
you hydrated from the inside out and will
only enhance all of these efforts you take
to apply layers of moisturizer to every part
of your body.
As in the summer, sun protection is important in the winter as well especially for your
face which is exposed all year long. All this
care will pay off in eliminating the aging
affects of winter. So look forward to a season
of more joy and moist skin and hair.

Floatation
therapy for
athletes

By Greg Griffin

f youre familiar with floatation therapy you probably know

that it is one of the most effective ways to relieve stress and
relax the body and mind. But did you know that floatation
therapy can be used for much more than stress relief? Professional
athletes, great minds and artists all use floating to help them reach
their full potential enhancing physical fitness, mental capacity
and creative expression.
Anyone whos ever lifted a free weight or jogged a mile knows
that the harder you train, the stronger you become. Many, however,
overlook the balance of working hard and recovery. If your body
isnt given the opportunity to heal between workouts it becomes
overly fatigued, stressed and susceptible to injury. Athletes understand the importance of rest and recovery to their training, and
floating is a great way to maximize performance.
Floating in the serene, warm water of the float tank reduces
exercise-induced stress, lactic acid buildup and fatigue in the
body. The Epsom salt saturated in the solution provides a healthy
dose of magnesium, relaxing muscles and aiding in recovery. The
buoyancy your body experiences also takes pressure off the joints
and spine, allowing blood to flow freely, which reduces inflammation. All of this paired with adequate sleep allows elite athletes
to train harder and more frequently sometimes up to twice as
often.
Floatation therapy can be a vital training tool for some of the
most physically demanding professional sports on earth. Professional level football (American, Canadian and everywhere else),
baseball, and mixed martial arts (MMA) all use floating to help
their athletes train. Members of the New England Patriots and
Seattle Seahawks utilized floating in their preparation leading up
30

Natures Pathways | December 2015

to Super Bowl XLIX. The Patriots had 3 float pods installed in

their training facility in 2015. And Patriots QB Tom Brady even
has a float tank in his home!
Rest and recovery arent the only reasons to step into the tank.
The float tank is also a great place to mentally prepare through
visualization. Visualization is the practice of picturing yourself
completing a task or result in the future. If done thoughtfully,
your subconscious mind becomes a self-guided missile helping
you prepare for the outcome you most desire. No external distractions in the tank means you are able to meditate and visualize
your goals effectively. Carl Lewis, considered to be one of the
greatest athletes of all time, famously used floating to visualize his
gold medal wins at the 1988 Summer Olympics.
Science also shows that visualization can enhance learning,
memorization and problem solving. The same principles used to
visualize a gold medal performance can help you remember the
periodic table or solve a complex mental problem. Once relaxed
in the float tank your brain enters a relaxed, meditative state
known as the theta wave state, which can bring forward heightened receptivity and forgotten memories. Pairing this state with

an audiobook or recorded lecture, for example, can accelerate and

enhance learning and retention.
Creativity can also be bolstered through floatation therapy.
When in the float tank, the theta waves can induce a hypnogogic state, which naturally occurs in the moments before you fall
asleep or when you first wake. This puts you in a mildly hallucinogenic frame of mind and can produce lucid imagery and dreams.
More importantly, the left hemisphere of the brain that is associated with logic and reasoning is relaxed and balances with the
creative right brain to produce hemispheric synchronicity, boosting creativity. Modern geniuses like John Lennon, Peter Gabriel,
and Robin Williams understand the power of floating to enhance
their creativity and craft. More recently, comedian and entertainer
Joe Rogan has been spreading the word on how much floatation
therapy helps him become more creative and balanced in his life.
Floatation therapys array of benefits extend far beyond an
escape from everyday stress. Whether youre training hard, studying hard or creating something beautiful, floating can help you do
your best work. It enhances so many aspects of overall wellness
that its no wonder its quickly becoming one of the best ways to
repair, rejuvenate and open the mind.

Garcher Family
Christmas Cookies

By Debi Morton

Ingredients:

1 pound butter, softened

2 pounds (8 cups) white flour
6 eggs
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 packet yeast or 1 cake yeast, 2/3 ounce
2 cups milk (or enough to make dough
sticky)
Fruit filling: Your choice of poppy seed,
apricot, nut, cherry, prune, apple
choose from any jam or fruit filling you
like.

Making the dough:

Warm 1 cup of the milk in the microwave

or on the stovetop to 105 degrees, and
add the yeast. Let the yeast develop for 5
minutes until bubbling on top.*
Cut softened butter into the dough to
create a pea size texture.
Beat your eggs to combine, then add the
milk and yeast mixture. Combine this with
the flour and butter dry mixture. I do this
initially with a large spoon, but then use
32

Natures Pathways | December 2015

my hands. Continue adding the remaining milk until dough is sticky. It should be
stickier than a bread dough. No kneading
is needed!
Form dough into 2 balls and let rest for
30 minutes to 1 hour in the refrigerator.
This recipe makes a lot of cookies so you
can use half and freeze the rest for later.

Making the cookies:

Divide one of the balls into quarters. Roll out

one quarter of the dough to about 11 inches
by 17 inches. Cut in 2-inch squares. I do this
by making one long cut down the center of
the rolled out dough, then cutting the remaining dough in half longwise. Repeat. Then cut
crosswise to get your 2-inch squares. Use
a ruler as needed. Repeat process with the
remaining quarters of dough.
Take a small dollop of your fruit filling
of choice and place in the center of each

the best temperature for yeast to multiply,
thats not quite warm enough for proofing

Healing
through
art

By Jennifer M. Warner, MSE, LPC
& Holistic Psychotherapist

rt is your story and it is a unique

expression of who you are. I have
been using art in my therapy practice since the beginning for this reason. Art
provides a structure, a method and a place
for change to occur for all ages. Children
enjoy drawing and coloring and making
their own art. Its very natural for them to
express themselves in this manner. Art is a
childs natural method of learning, developing and expressing their feelings. Art offers
us the opportunity to use the power of our
own natural creativity as a way to heal and
grow. But it seems that we lose this interest as
we become adults. Could this be the reason
for the sudden interest and availability of
adult coloring books and adult paint nights?
The expression, One picture is worth a
thousand words, was first used by Fred R.
Barnard in Printers Ink magazine in 1927.
When he wrote it, Mr. Barnard was afraid
people wouldnt take him seriously, so he
falsely attributed its origin to a Chinese
proverb. But what Mr. Barnard didnt know
was that 54 years later, split-brain research
would prove him to be right. A picture is
composed of imagery and that is a function of the right side of the brain, which
is the body-minds internal, subconscious
language.
www.naturespathways.com

The brain

There are two sides of the brain and each

process information differently. The left
side of the brain processes information in
a linear and orderly fashion, and it is where
the language center resides, which gives us
our verbal communication in words. This

left side is not the experience but the interpretation of the experience. Thus, the left
side uses our beliefs to analyze, evaluate
and judge the experience. It tells us what
we think we feel, which may not be what
is actually felt.

What is
cupping
therapy?

By Tracy Jobe

hen you look through the services or techniques that a

massage therapist might offer, you might come across
cupping. Unless you have had this particular therapy
done, you are probably like most thinking, what is it?
According to Wikipedia, cupping therapy is an ancient form
of alternative medicine in which a local suction is created on the
skin; practitioners believe this mobilizes blood flow in order to
promote healing. Suction is created using heat (fire) or mechanical devices (hand or electrical pumps).
Cupping is the inverse of massage. Instead of applying pressure
to an area, like massage, cupping pulls the skin up. Cupping can
be done all on its own as a stand-alone treatment or can be done
in conjunction with other therapies.
You are probably wondering how this might be helpful or

beneficial to you. Fascia is the biological fabric that holds us

together. You are about 70 trillion cells all humming in relative
harmony; fascia is the 3-D spider web of fibrous, gluey and wet
proteins that hold them all together in their proper placement. We
are covered in fascia from head to toe, our organs, muscles, and
some fascia is found in the body in thick sheets. Just like muscles,
you can get restrictions in your fascia. Cupping is a technique that
can help release fascial restrictions, relieving pain, and increasing range of motion. Because fascia is everywhere throughout our
body, we can feel relief in a totally different area than the area
being worked because everything is connected.
So now that you know one of the uses of cupping, lets go
over how it actually works. No matter what type of cups used,
the purpose of the cup is to create a suction. When placed on the

skin, there is a vacuum or suction created and the skin is lifted up.
Blood vessels expand and the skin may redden, some of this varies
with each individual person, and the health of the tissue underneath it. Bringing blood to an injured or unhealthy area promotes
healing. A cup may be left on one spot for 5-10 minutes at a time.
There may be some mild discomfort in the area that the cup is on,
but usually lessens as time goes on. Again, this is going to vary
with the health of the area being treated. The side effect of cupping
may be that there is a bruise left at the site of the cup, which can
last for a few days.
Cups can be applied to one area, or to treat a larger area, and
gliding can be used with the cups. A cup is applied in one spot
and glided back and forth from point A to point B several times.
This again can be uncomfortable, and may leave a rug burn like
mark as well, depending on the health of the area treated and the
individual persons skin.
The benefit of cupping is to enhance circulation, help relieve
pain, remove heat and pull out the toxins that linger in your
bodys tissues. It often works wonders for patients with the flu,
colds, coughs, back and muscle pain, poor circulation, anxiety,
red itchy skin conditions (though cups are not applied to inflamed
areas), allergies, fevers, aches, and a myriad of other pains. Athletes
have been seen using cupping therapy for healing injuries, as well
as celebrities turning to cupping for their healing benefits. Many
find cupping to be as relaxing as a massage. I often have clients
who have a sticky area and request to be cupped, because they
know the benefits of it. If a client has had a chronic issue, which
has not been responding to just massage, I will often add some
cupping to take the healing to a different level.
Cupping is not exclusive to traditional Chinese medicine. Variations of this treatment were used by ancient Egyptians, North
American Indians, early Greeks, and in other Asian and European
countries. Cupping therapy was recommended by Hippocrates,
the man whom many consider to be the Father of Modern Medicine, in his guide to clinical treatment.
Whatever your reason for trying cupping, you will be amazed
by this simple, yet effective, therapy that has been practiced for
thousands of years worldwide.
Tracy is a licensed massage therapist and Reiki master. Tracy has been practicing therapeutic massage for 10 years, dealing with a wide variety of populations and conditions. Tracy uses a variety of modalities including Cranio Sacral,
Raindrop Technique, Cupping, Reiki, Access Bars, and the Amethyst BioMat,

HEALING THROUGH ART continued from page 33

Unlike the left, the right side of the brain is the imagistic
side that does not analyze or judge the experience. It is just the
observer and records the experience. Therefore, there is a difference between what our words and what our images tell us. The
right side of the brain processes visual-spatial information and
is the intuitive, emotional and spiritual side. So it is through art
and the use of images that the subconscious (the inner thoughts)
can be easily accessed. Art helps one to externalize their issues so
that they can approach it more objectively. Art is used in healing
and therapy as communication to assist one in uncovering blocks,
patterns and cycles of behavior that keep one stuck.
An example: I am wondering if there is anything this art can
tell us about your issue that has not been said in words? Having
an individual create an image of their struggle or challenge and
asking them to choose colors, lines and forms that best express
and represent their struggle or challenge. It is the metaphors and
analogies that assist in uncovering themes such as polarized/
dualistic thinking, care giving identities, inability to ask for help,
poor boundaries and limits, protection of self, feelings of being
unloved, fear of abandonment, and issues stemming from childhood arise.

Art is useful in:

Reacquainting you with feelings

Expressing and releasing feelings
Reducing stress
Connecting with your positive qualities, resiliencies and

strengths

Discovering your own problem-solving and decision-making

skills

Connecting spiritually
Acceptance and forgiveness of self and others

Art enables us to go more deeply into our own process and thus
facilitates emotional healing. When we are able to do we learn
from the experience and are active in our own healing process.
Art can facilitate us to discover our own solutions that facilitate
change, which greatly empowers us. Since art can accelerate the
access to the emotional side and the subconscious it can then
shorten our healing process and deliver more lasting results.
Some helpful guides to consider when starting to embark on
your healing journey through art are: Drawing from the Heart
by Barbara Ganim; Visual Journaling, Going Deeper than Words
by Barbara Ganim and Susan Fox. And it might just be time to
pick up that coloring book and make that time for a paint night.
As always, if you find that your issues and problems continue
to surface and not resolve, then it may be time to consult with a
professional.

Chamomile

Matricaria recutita,
Chamomilla recutita

wo types of chamomile have been

used for health conditions: German
chamomile and Roman chamomile. While the two kinds are thought
to have similar effects on the body, the
German variety is more commonly used in
the United States and is the focus of this
fact sheet.
Chamomile has been widely used in
children and adults for thousands of years
for a variety of health conditions. Today,
chamomile is used as a folk or traditional
remedy for sleeplessness, anxiety and
gastrointestinal conditions such as upset
stomach, gas, and diarrhea. It is also used
topically for skin conditions and for mouth
ulcers resulting from cancer treatment.
The flowering tops of the chamomile
plant are used to make teas, liquid extracts,
capsules or tablets. The herb can also be

applied to the skin as a cream or an ointment, or used as a mouth rinse.

What the science says

Chamomile has not been well studied in

people so there is little evidence to support
its use for any condition.
Some early studies point to chamomiles
possible benefits for certain skin conditions and for mouth ulcers caused by
chemotherapy or radiation.
In combination with other herbs, chamomile may be of some benefit for upset
stomach, for diarrhea in children and for
infants with colic.
NCCIH-funded research includes
studies of chamomile for generalized
anxiety disorder and abdominal pain
caused by childrens bowel disorders.

Side effects and cautions

Note: There are reports of allergic reactions in people who have eaten or come
into contact with chamomile products.
Reactions can include skin rashes, throat
swelling, shortness of breath and anaphylaxis (a life-threatening allergic reaction).
People are more likely to experience
allergic reactions to chamomile if they are
allergic to related plants in the daisy family,
which include ragweed, chrysanthemums,
marigolds and daisies.
Tell all your health care providers about
any complementary health approaches you
use. Give them a full picture of what you
do to manage your health. This will help to
ensure coordinated and safe care.

The music of
the streets
Listening to the
oneness of us all

By Cecilia Farran

HE WAS MY son and he knew the streets.

call him back.

To the homeless, the
drifters.
The dealers. The drunks.
The guys without work...
And the men who might
never hold a job.

Knew those men.

Was often one of them himself.

It was his choice really.

He did not need to live there,
Usually had a job and a place to sleep.
Sometimes salvation was a bed at the
Sally (Salvation Army).
Or in good times, a place of his own.
Till drink would bring him down
To a thin mattress for months on end
In a green-walled cell.
But ever the street and its stories would

To stand on a corner of town

Whenever he could,
Weather permitting.

No judgement.
Just a banjo and a song
For the men on the street
And a steady gaze that would look them
in the eye.
He played the music of hard times
Of choices. Of hope.
Not hope as the world hopes
But of the hope of the soul.
Till his last words to us, Keep it Real.
Laid a reminder to never sell out, no
matter what
And know that under the bundled coats
of the street
And its winter chill
We are all one.
