    Rolf Liebermann was a Swiss composer and conductor born in 1910 in Zurich. He studied law and music, and worked as a composer, conductor, and administrator throughout Europe. As a composer, he is renowned for his one-act operas from the 1950s and 1960s, as well as his later operas and works combining jazz and classical styles. Liebermann held prominent roles at opera houses and radio stations in Switzerland, Germany, and France. He received many honors and awards over his long and successful career before passing away in 1999.

    LiebermannwasstudyingconductingwithHermannScherchen.HeworkedasScherchen'sprivatesecretaryinBudapestand
    Viennain19371938,whereScherchenhadfoundedtheMusicaVivaorchestra(mainlywithJewishmusicianswhohadfledinto
    exilefromGermany).InSwitzerlandLiebermanngavetuitiontorefugeechildren,andwrotemusiccriticism.Hedidhismilitary
    serviceinAscona.Therehealsostudiedcompositionfrom1940onwithVladimirVogel.
    From1945to1950LiebermannworkedasarecordingengineerwithRadioZurichfrom1950to1957heheadedtheorchestra
    departmentoftheSwissRadio(nowcalledRadioDRSZurich).From1957to1959hewasheadofthemainmusicsectionofthe
    NorddeutscherRundfunkandfrom1959to1973GeneralManageroftheHamburgStateOpera.Hemadethisacontemporary
    centreofcontemporarymusictheatre(with23firstperformances,ofwhich21werecommissionedworks).Hefilledasimilar
    positioninParis(AdministrateurGnralduThtreNationaldel'OpradeParis).Atthistimehewroteanumberofbooks:
    Actesetentractes,Paris1976(Opernjahre,Bern/Munich1977)andEnpassantparParis.Opras,Paris1980(Undjedermann
    erwartetsicheinFest.Musiktheater,Frankfurt.a.MBerlinVienna1981).WiththedirectorJosephLosey,in1979Liebermann
    producedafilmversionofMozart'soperaDonGiovanni,whichLorinMaazelconducted.
    From1983to1987LiebermannwasDirectoroftheInternationalSummerAcademyoftheMozarteumConservatoryinSalzburg.
    From1985to1988heoncemorewasGeneralManageroftheHamburgStateOpera.In1998,athisinstigation,thefirstjazz
    operawasproducedinthepremisesoftheKampnagelfactoryinHamburg:CosmopolitanGreetingsbyGeorgGruntzandRolf
    Liebermann(music),AllenGinsberg(text)andRobertWilson(setanddirection).
    Asacomposer,Liebermannattainedinternationalrenown,notleastforhisoneactoperasLeonore40/45(premire:Basel
    1952),Penelope(premire:Salzburg1954)andDieSchulederFrauen(premire:Louisville,Kentucky1955),whichhadits
    thefirstEuropeanperformanceinacompletethreeactversionattheSalzburgfestival.TherefollowedtheoperasLaFort
    (HlneVida,afterthecomedybyAleksandrOstrovskrij,premire:Geneva1987)andFreispruchfrMedea(premire:
    Hamburg1995).Liebermann'sConcertoforJazzBandandSymphonyOrchestra(premire:Donauschingen1954,directedby
    HansRosbaud),anearlyattempttocombinejazzwithdodecaphony,alsometwithinterestandrecognition.
    LiebermannreceivedmanyawardsinSwitzerland,inAustria,theFederalRepublicofGermany,inFrance(Commandeurde
    l'OrdredelaLgiond'honneur),OrdredesArtsetdesLetters),Italy,GreatBritainandtheUSA.Hewasamemberofthe
