When are You an Artist?
Having had the opportunity to appreciate the work of two local artists this week, I’ve been
thinking about what the real difference is between a creative person and an artist. It’s not
just talent but it’s not solely monetary recognition either. Creative people apply imagination
and ingenuity to solve problems. This is an expression of part of their personality that makes
them adept and motivates them to become more skilful. Artists are compelled to be creative
and see the entire world through this filter. They’re passionate about the expression of their
creativity and will devote considerable time to meticulously refining their craft. Notably,
they spend much more time at this than can be economically justified but they can’t leave it
alone. Creativity is a compulsion for artists.
Artists frequently have to support themselves through other more mundane forms of work.
In their hearts I suspect they still see this as just filling the gap between meeting responsi-
bilities and that time when they can be left alone to go back to doing what they are fasci-
nated by. So when is this a hobby and when does it become art? The line is blurry and de-
pends on how the individual sees himself. Art is distinguished by excelling in a any particu-
lar expression and honing your craft can apply to many fields of endeavour.
We generally think of art as expression without a profit motive but, in fact, every person
who relentlessly refines her abilities and greatly surpasses the average in any form of work
is raising it to an artistic level. You’ll know a real artistic work when you see it because you
can’t deny true excellence. In a sense all of life is art if you are willing to devote the hard
work and solitary concentration necessary to create something well above the ordinary. Call
yourself an artist or a farmer or a businessperson but respect your art and go to it with a pas-
sion. JK

Quebec is the centre of the once great
Canadian maple syrup industry. Today the
fad for low carbohydrate diets has caused
a sever slump in demand for syrup and an
unexpected crisis among sap harvesters.
The QAFS (Que. Alliance des Fermiers
de Sirop) reports to the CBC that vast
amounts of syrup produced this spring
will likely be dumped. Even more seri-
ously, unharvested sap remaining in trees
will pose a serious threat to local tree
workers. With unusually warm weather
conditions the sap can begin to run
quickly building up pressure in the trees
and causing them to unexpectedly ex-
plode. The result of this form of thermal
expansion has already claimed 4 lives in
the Trois Rivier area. Saskatchewan
towns are responding by sending special-
ist assistance.
