NARRATIVE REPORT ON BRIGADA ESKWELA

Educators believe that environment plays a big part in pupils learning.
And so, if classrooms are not conducive to learning because of poor condition
and some defective school facilities, education is hindered.
In connection with this, the Department of Education conducted this
years Brigada Eskwela also known as National Schools Maintenance Week
on May 20-24, 2013 where all education stakeholders contributed their time,
effort and resources in ensuring that the school facilities are ready in time
for the school opening.
As early as March, Ilynne S. Samonte and teachers of Capunitan
Elementary School recruited volunteers who would participate in the brigade.
Parents, who are members for PEACE and other people from the community,
were encouraged to join the week - long annual program. Fund from Mr. and
Ms. Capunitan popularity contest was used to cover the effort of
reconstruction of fences that was destroyed by a typhoon, and also the
putting up of pathways going to canteen. Fund from MOOE was used to
repair one of the classroom buildings in grade one.

Early morning of May 20, the teachers of Capunitan Elementary School
held a short program that signalled the start of Brigada Eskwela. The
presence

of

different

groups

of

volunteers

was acknowledged. Short

orientation about the mechanics of the 6-day activity was given by Ms. Ilynne
S. Samonte. Finally the opening of the Brigada Eskwela was announced. The
willing, ready and able brigade included zealous teachers, enthusiastic
parents, excited students, and other concern people of the community.
Professional help such as carpenters, welders, masons and painters was
provided by some generous benefactors to assist in reconstructing some of
the classrooms. Among the minor activities are repainting of the classrooms,
walls,

ceilings, doors,

windows

and window

grills,

repair

of desks, armchairs and cabinets. Cleaning of the school surroundings and

rehabilitation of the school garden were assigned to some mothers
who found true enjoyment in doing their tasks. All the members of the
brigade worked tirelessly for one week. They did all that and more with an
enviable spirit of camaraderie. May 24, was the last day of the week long
activity. Through the overwhelming support of the volunteers, the classrooms
are

restructured

and

spruced up. All school facilities are now in good condition. The school
surrounding is now free from tall grasses. Generally, the school is now ready
for the school opening. Evidences for the week long activity are attached
herewith.
