OBJECTIVE

: At the end of the lesson, the child must be able to:


1. identify things that can burn and things that cannot
burn.
2. discriminate between things that can burn and things
that cannot burn.
3. sort things that can burn and things cannot burn into
two distinct sets.
4. classify objects by condition: can burn or cannot burn.

INTEGRATED DEVELOPMENT

: Through this activity, the child will also be able to

achieve these objectives in the following areas of development:


1. Language to learn new vocabulary i.e. candle, stove, matches, paper, plastic,
metal, glass
2. Art and Craft to create a poster collage on objects that can burn and objects
that cannot burn using construction paper, pictures and glue
3. Moral to know the danger of fire and things that burn
DURATION

: 30 minutes

MATERIALS

:
1. picture cards of objects in school and at home that can
burn, example matches, paper, candles, stove and
burner, lighter, cigarettes, electrical outlets and switches,
petrol, iron and cloth, gas cylinder, open flame and
campfire, barbeque grill etc.
2. picture cards of objects in school and at home that
cannot burn for example plastic containers, rubber
tubing, metal utensils, glassware, ceramic ware, plastic
toys and crayons.
3. word labels for the objects on the picture cards
4. construction paper, scissors and glue

PROCEDURE

1. Teacher prepares picture cards of objects that can burn


and that cannot burn which are usually found in the
school and home, one set of each kind of card for every
group of four children.
2. Teacher divides children into groups if four.
3. Teacher explains that things that burn are things that
can cause fire or catch fire and become hot. These
things can be dangerous. Teacher also explains that
some things do not burn easily.
4. She shows pictures of these objects using her set of
picture cards during the explanation so that the children
are able to identify, recognize and discriminate these
objects easily. Teacher also shows word labels to identify
each picture.
5. Every group is then given a set of picture cards showing
objects that can burn and objects that cannot burn,
similar to the picture cards that the teacher used during
her explanation, and the appropriate word labels for the
objects in the picture cards.
6. Every group is also given two sheets of construction
papers and glue.
7. The children are then asked to sort the picture cards into
two sets based on the property of objects that can
burn and objects that cannot burn.
8. Teacher facilitates while the children glue two sets of
pictures with the correct word labels onto separate
pieces

of

construction

paper. Their

work

is

then

displayed at the Fire Safety Theme Centre in the


classroom.
EXTENSION ACTIVITY

: A worksheet showing harmful objects that can burn


easily. The child must mark X on the pictures of the
things that can burn or cause fire.
