III. Summary
Summary (meaning)

A shortened version of a text that highlights its key points. The primary purpose of a summary is
to "give an accurate, objective.

Summary
Farhan Qureshi and Raju Rastogi want to re-unite with their fellow collegian, Rancho, after faking a
stroke abroad an Air India plane, and excusing himself from his wife trouser less respectively. Enroute,
they encounter another student, Chatur Ramalingam, now a successful businessman, who reminds them of a
bet they had undertaken 10 years ago. The trio, while recollecting hilarious antics, including their run-ins
with the Dean of Delhis Imperial College of Engineering, Viru Sahastrabudhe, race to locate Rancho, at his
last known address little knowing the secret that was kept from them all this time.
Farhan Qureshi (R. Madhavan), Raju Rastogi (Sharman Joshi) and Ranchoddas Shamaldas
Chanchad Rancho (Aamir Khan) are three engineering students who share a room in the residence of
Imperial College of Engineering (ICE). Farhan is studying engineering to pursue his fathers wishes over
his own wish to become a wildlife photographer. Raju is studying to raise his familys fortunes and get
them out of poverty. On the other hand, Rancho studies for his simple passion in machines and devices.
Rancho believes that success in studying is not achieved by solely memorizing definitions given by
textbooks or professors, but by understanding and applying the concepts. He believes that one should follow
excellence, not success, as success will come itself if excellence is followed.
Things further escalate when the three friends drunkenly break into Viruss house one night to allow
Rancho to confess his love to Pia, and urinate on the front door before fleeing. The next day, Virus threatens
to rusticate Raju unless he squeals on Rancho. Not wanting to betray his friend or let down his family, Raju
attempts suicide and ends up paralyzed. Following his recovery, Raju discards his fear of the future.
Encouraged by Rancho, both Raju and Farhan gain courage to do what they were afraid to do before. Raju
takes a frank approach in an interview for a corporate job, while Farhan convinces his parents to allow him
to pursue his love of wildlife photography, both successful in their endeavors.
Their story is framed as intermittent flashbacks from the present day, ten years after Chatur bet that hed
become more successful than Rancho. Having lost contact with Rancho, who disappeared during the
graduation party and went into seclusion, after five years, Raju and Farhan begin a journey to find him.
They are joined by Chatur, now a wealthy and successful professional in the USA, who is looking to seal a
deal with a famous scientist and prospective business associate named Phunsukh Wangdu. When they find
Ranchos house in Shimla, they find a completely different man: the real Rancho (Jaaved Jaffrey).
From him, they come to know that their friend was a destitute servant boy Chhote who loved
learning, while he, the real Rancho, disliked study. After seeing the boys intelligence, the family agreed to
let the servant boy study in Ranchos place instead of laboring. In return, the real Rancho would pocket his
qualifications and after graduating, the servant boy will cease all contact. The real Rancho reveals that
Chhote is now a schoolteacher in Ladakh. At the same time, they find out that, without Rancho, Pia decided
to marry the same price-obsessed banker that Rancho initially talked her into dumping, and they go to
rescue her from the wedding.
Raju and Farhan find Pia and arrive at Ranchos school. Pia and the fake Rancho rekindle their love,
while Chatur mocks Rancho for becoming a lowly schoolteacher. He asks Rancho to sign a Declaration of
Defeat document. When Ranchos friends ask what his real name is, he reveals that he is actually
Phunsukh Wangdu himself. Chatur finds out about this and is horrified; he accepts his defeat and pleads his
case with Phunsukh to establish the business relationship he was after.

IV. Critique
*a. Positive
Farhan
Farhan wants to become a wildlife photographer, but is pursuing an engineering degree to fulfil his
father's wish, whereas Raju needs to improve his family's financial situation, and Rancho studies for the
pleasure of building machines. But because of ranchos advice to him, Farhan pursues photography.
Raju
Virus threatens to expel Raju, who, unable to choose between betraying his friend and disappointing
his family, attempts his own death. Raju gives eccentric answers to an interview. Virus vows to make the
course's final exam as hard as possible so that Raju is unable to graduate. Pia, in reply, tells Rancho of the
exam, and he and Farhan steal the examination's questions for Raju who refuses to cheat. Virus sentences
them to expulsion; but they earn a reprieve when Viru's pregnant elder daughter Mona (Mona Singh) goes
into labour at the same time.

Rancho
Due to Viru's pregnant elder daughter Mona (Mona Singh) goes into labour at the same
time, unluckily, A heavy storm cuts electricity, and Pia instructs Rancho to deliver the baby in the college
common room via Voice over IP, after Rancho restores power using car batteries and a power inverter
invented by Rancho. After the baby is apparently stillborn, Rancho resuscitates it; wherefore Virus allows
them to take and pass their final exams. Rancho comes first and is awarded Virus's prize pen, retained
hitherto for an especially-capable student.
*b. Negative
Virus
. Professor Viru Sahastrabuddhe a.k.a. 'Virus' (Boman Irani), by giving creative and unorthodox

answers in class, and later blames the rote-learning mentality of the institution for the suicide of fellow
student Joy Lobo.
*c. Social Relevance
Poverty and illness may be touchy topics, best example of this is the status of Rajus family. All you
need is a mom cribbing about the familys pathetic financial condition in black and white, while the
paralyzed dad lies in bed, and audiences will roll away in their seats.

Think outside the box. Best example of these are the resourceful things that we can make if the
lights were force to turned off.
Believe in Your Self (All is well). During the film Amir Khan keep on saying that All izz well the
goal behind this thing is you should motivate yourself and You must believe in you that you can do this.
Always Have few Idiots friends with you. Here I mean to say Idiots is not fools but people like you
who think out of the box and who have passion to do the things

V. Favourite Line from the Film
