HYDRATION

the key to skin that glows from within

Introducing Neutrogena@ Hydro Boost Water Gel.
Has your skin started to lose its get up and glow? Dehydration is a common
culprit. Formulated with hyaluronic acid, new Hydro Boost is clinically proven
to quench skin instantly and release continuous hydration all day. Skin is
plump, deeply hydrated, and back to its glowing self.
Lightweight gel texture
WHAT IS

Oil free

HYALURONIC ACID?

Hyaluronic acid (HA), naturally found in skin, is a powerful hydrator that

holds up to 1,000 times its weight in water. It plays a critical role in keeping
skin cells* hydrated and plumped, resulting in supple, youthful-looking
skin. We lose Hyaluronic acid over time, but the added HA in Hydro Boost
works to help keep skin hydrated and smooth, with a healthy-looking glow.

EDITORS LETTER
Glenda Bailey on
the new collections
IM ALWAYS EXCITED to see
beautiful clothes, but the Fall 2015 collections were
a special thrill. The worlds wildest color combinations
at Prada, Chlos bohemian rhapsody, Erdems
staggeringly lovely dresses, and Altuzarras sultry swans were all highlights, and
Proenza Schoulers fine-feathered finale gowns made for a masterful
crescendo. And dont get me started on Valentino. The collection,
which was inspired in part by Gustav Klimt companion Emilie Flge, was artfully
breathtaking in more ways than one. Just when I thought I couldnt get any closer to fashion heaven,
out they came: Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson stomping down the runway in an
announcement of their long-awaited Zoolander sequel. To paraphrase
Carmel Snow, it was truly good taste with a dash of daringbut this time
with a dash of humor as well. Elsewhere, Alber Elbaz rocked my world with both an
incredible collection at Lanvin and the exhibition on house founder Jeanne Lanvin that he curated at the
Palais Galliera in Paris. It was also wonderful to see the fresh perspectives that new designers lent to their
debuts at historic brands. I was touched by how graciously Peter Copping handled his
inaugural collection for Oscar de la Renta and by the boldness of Alessandro Micheles
Margot Tenenbauminspired looks at Gucci. Nadge Vanhee-Cybulskis debut at
Herms honored the codes of the house, and John Galliano brought theatricality to his first ready-to-wear
collection at Maison Margiela with shaggy heels that gave new meaning to the phrase
hot to trot. Meanwhile, the frisson of the new was much in evidence in Adrien Caillaudaud and
Alexis Martials exploration of youthful mod at Carven, and Guillaume Henrys strong reimagination
of Nina Ricci. Of course, theres no one who better represents ease and style
than Emilia Clarke, who plays the gorgeous Daenerys Targaryen
on HBOs Game of Thrones. A brunette in real life, Emilia modeled the seasons most dramatic
looks for our cover story, including an Alexander McQueen number
worthy of a queen. Or, as they might say on the show,
a khaleesi. Enjoy the issue.

Kenzo and Opening Ceremony

designers Humberto Leon and Carol Lim talk 90s
style, mall shopping, and other inspirations

Your show for Kenzo this season

was filled with colorful prints,
interesting shapes, and dancing
holographic trees. Where did all
that come from? CL: I think it
was this idea of communityof
making it about a group of women
and their relationship and how they
live. When you look at the brand,
that idea was really present with
Kenzo Takada. When you look at
our presentation, with the prints and
the techniques and even the setting
and the choreography of what we
imagined with the abstract trees that
were moving, these were the things
that led to the creation of it.
How is designing for Kenzo similar to or different from designing for Opening Ceremony?
HL: Well, Kenzo himself had a store
when he first started, so he was a
retailer to begin with, just like we
are. But the main difference is that
Opening Ceremony represents us, and
with Kenzo weve brought some things
to the brand that werent there before.
Weve brought a digital platform and
a different idea of community, and a
lot of that comes from what weve
developed at Opening Ceremony.
What are some brands or designers youre excited about now? HL:
Marques Almeida is great, as is Craig
Green, and theres this denim line
out of L.A. called 69 thats amazing.
You both hung out a lot at malls
when you were kids. Where did
you like to shop? And how does
the mall scene then compare with
what its like today? HL: Back
then I liked Contempo Casuals, Oak
Tree, Esprit, and Journeys to an extent.
CL: Benetton, Millers Outpost. HL:
I feel like a lot of mall stores now
have gotten more generic and less
specialized. There were ones then
that were all about cargo or the outdoorsthey used to really own their
identities. As told to Priya Rao

HUMBERTO

Kenzo,
Fall 2015

The fall collection for Opening

Ceremony was inspired by the
director Spike Jonze. What was
it like collaborating with him?
HL: It was probably one of the most
personal endeavors wed ever worked
on. We were allowed to go into Spikes
photo archives and sort through his
images to tell a story. Wed already
seen some of them because they were
published in magazines or he shared
them with us, but this was a really indepth look at 20 years of someones
life. Much of the content we looked
at was from the 90s, so it was kind
of hard to escape, but it was more the
attitude of that decade that we were
after in our collection than the clothes
of the time. CL: Obviously we grew
up during that period, and there was
this ease and laid-back approach that
we really liked seeing. I think that was
the starting point for us. How do we
capture that? We love that feeling.

ASK

Kenzo,
Fall 2015

You guys always seem to have

your finger on the pulse of whats
new, exciting, and surprising in
fashion. How do you approach
the creative parts of your job?
HUMBERTO LEON: We always
try to tell a story through what we
do and to approach everything both
as the viewer and as the consumer.
Culture is a big part of what we do,
and we always refer back to it. Were
inspired by all kinds of thingsfood,
art, film, movies,TVall the stuff we
love, whether its an older movie like
Coming to America or a new show
like Transparent. We like to explore.
CAROL LIM: I think for us it always
starts from a personal place. Now that
we each have our own families, our
kids have become part of the landscape too, down to functional things
like, Oh, my gosh, this doesnt exist.
We should try to make this. Its fun
because you discover things that you
wouldnt really look at if you didnt
have kids. It kind of opened up a
whole world for us.

One of the many reasons Loewes new creative director,

Jonathan Anderson, is the fashion designer of the moment? He knows how to
marry the modern with sly nods to the past. Case in point:

A structured, fold-over shoulder-style beauty, its

finished in golden caramel and rich brown and
features a triangular closure that pays homage
to the houses archives. Heres to the latest It bag.

it comes to musicians, I constantly find myself with a

chicken-and-egg dilemma:
Which did I like first, their
songs or their style? Take
KATY PERRY, who surprised
at a screening of her Prismatic
concert film in a Balenciaga
dress that was in equal measure
Goth, S&M, and urban sophisticateno LED lights or pink
pinwheels here. Speaking of
bright things, all eyes were on
FKA TWIGS at the opening
of the Alexander McQueen:
Savage Beauty exhibition in
London, where she performed
in the late designers iconic
bird-of-paradise gown. And its
since been revealed that shes
engaged to Robert Pattinson.
(Sorry, Twi-hards.) Then
theres FLORENCE WELCH,
who looks and sounds every
bit the 60s soul crooner. I
loved the pink Chanel leisure
suit she wore to the houses
fall runway show. Meanwhile,
for RIHANNA, all the worlds
a runway: The slinky leather
dress and pink chinchilla coat
she wore in New York blended her hip-hop attitude with
old-Hollywood glamour.
Finally, my quintessential
music babe, GWEN STEFANI,
never fails to nail the look (as
she did here in black J Brand
jeans and major heels), whether
on the red carpet or a school
run. Now thats rock n roll.

Birman cats

7:00 A.M. My son wakes me up,

and I prepare his breakfast and get him ready for
school. From seven oclock to 8:15, its all about him. I make
him oatmeal with rice milk and fruit or toasted Poilne bread with
Nutellathats the more decadent extreme. I just have oatmeal and
water with fresh ginger. It helps me stay healthy. I have Birman catstwo
Choupettesthat my father gave to my son. The cats are lovely, a brother
and sister named Gaston and Gastine, only they love leather, so they attack my
bags and my shoes. They bite them like a toy, like catnip, and they attack fur and
feathers. We brush them all the time, but they have long white hair, and Im often
dressed in black. I use a Scotch roller every time I leave the house. They come and
scratch the doors in the morning for breakfast, so I have not just my son but the cats
waking me up. 8:15 A.M. After I walk my son to school, I go back home and do an
hour of gymrunning in the Jardin du Luxembourg or doing yoga or Pilates. I have
an instructor who comes to my house. Thats my time where I can breathe. 9:15 A.M.
I quickly have a coffee and take my shower. The cats want to be in the bathroom with
me; they follow me like dogs. I wash my hair with Shiseido shampoo. I have long hair, so
I use a mask instead of conditioner, and Ive discovered a great Kiehls styling cream. Ive
been using La Prairie moisturizer for my faceI kind of switch around. I was going to
skin-care expert Jolle Ciocco in Paris, but I havent had time lately. My makeup is simple:
BB cream from Ren, black eyeliner and mascara from Chanel, and Im hooked on Baume
de La Mer lip moisturizer. My trick is to use Laura Mercier luminizer under my eyes. It
makes you look like you just went on vacation. In the shower, I think about what Im going
to wear, and I get dressed quite fast. Where I lose time is finding my clothes, because my
wardrobe is not as organized as Id like. I have my basicsjeans and a white T-shirtand
I just dress around that. Im in heels almost every day, so I have a lot of them; one of my
guest bedrooms has become a walk-in closet. My clothes all have a story: bags from when I was at Louis Vuitton, shoes
I did while I was at Prada. Im kind of creating an archive. The new Sonia Rykiel clothes have just arrived in the
shops, so now Im allowed to wear them. Ive been enjoying wearing socks with sandalsI like the attitude.
I often buy blazers and jackets for my husband from places like Comme des Garons, but I end up wearing
them myself. I try not to go into his closet, though, since mine is already dominating! To tell you the
truth, it reassures me that my closet is bigger than my husbands because Im more comfortable with
a man who isnt too into his clothes and looking at himself in the mirror. I dont like men who
are too precious, at least not as a husband. 9:50 A.M. Im lucky I live close to the office
because Im always late. Its my worst habit. My husband has had to get used to it,
unfortunately; he had no choice. I take a Vlib bicycle, which is like Citi Bike, or
walk or jump in a car if Im very late, and I do my makeup on the way.
I carry this huge Herms canvas-and-leather bag filled with
books and references, or my Sonia Rykiel Domino
bag. I dont know how to organize

whole day with me. 10:30 A.M.
I look at my schedule and then start
fittings. My week alternates between categories, like shoes, bags, Sonia Rykiel, Sonia by Sonia

collection and the childrens collection. Its a Sonia Rykiel universe. 1:00 P.M. I might have a lunch

meeting, or I eat in my office and go through paperwork. Im really into macrobiotic food, like tofu
and whole grain rice with vegetables. I have it delivered from a really old place here in St.-Germain-des-Prs.
Ive been a vegetarian since 1990, so Im a bit complicated. 2:00 P.M. I go into my afternoon fittingsthats where
things evolve and start to become something else. Its quite magical. 5:00 P.M. I always have the need for a snack.
I have bags of nuts, almonds and cashews. If we have meetings, I bring nuts for everyone. I can have three or four coffees
a day, which is not good. 8:00 P.M. When everyone is gone I put on the music quite loud and design. I could go until, like,
four in the morning; I have strong endurance. Ive been replaying the music from our last show: Jeanne Moreauher voice
is so French and charming and sexyand Leonard Cohen. One band that always puts me in a good mood is Phoenix; Thomas
[Mars] is a great friend. I just love his voice and his energy. 10:00 P.M. I have dinner when I get home, something easy, like a soup
that my sons nanny prepares or a yogurt. I do have some guilty pleasures, obviously; Im very human. I used to be quite a chocoholic.
Its a fact that sugar attracts sugar. I discovered this amazing chocolate place from the 1800s near the atelier, called Debauve & Gallais.
Its Sonia Rykiel and Miuccia Pradas favorite. Lola [Rykiel] told me that her grandmother often had chocolate instead of lunch. Thats
something I used to do all the time. Ive changed since I was pregnant; you eat healthier when you have a child. I do like to have a glass
of red wine or a cocktail with friends, but I like discipline, actuallyI like rules. I dont watch TV often, but I did get hooked on Damages,
with Glenn Close, 24, and Greys Anatomy. Weekends, I concentrate on my family. We have a country house. I was born and raised in the
countryside, so I need to be close to green. Thats the way to recharge. If were in the city, we go out to
restaurants and see friends and art. I recently saw an amazing Jeff Koons exhibition at the Pompidou,
and I loved Jess Rafael Soto at Galerie Perrotin. They have such cool stuff. I like to shop at Merci
for home and design things and at Comme des Garons. I love how Rei Kawakubo pushes a lot of
the Japanese designersthe creativity is super inspiring. You feel like youre in another dimension.
I have a sister in London we visit quite a bit, and I love shopping at Idea Books there, which
has really rare photography and art books. I have maybe 3,000 art books at home. Dover Street
Market is another favorite place. Its nice to see the work of young designers like Simone
Rocha and how they push themselves in different directions. 1:00 A.M. My ritual is washing my face, taking off my makeup, and a long process of putting on creams that can take
45 minutes. Sometimes I do a mask as well. Right now Im wearing a hydrating La Prairie
mask while I sleep. Its important to me not to go to bed with makeupits probably
the worst thing to do. I do a mask for my hair too. I get very girly at night. 1:45 A.M.
In my bedroom I have an old architects desk, a fireplace, and art pieces, like a wall
sculpture from French artist Laurent Grasso. Another bad habit is falling asleep with
my iPhone. I used to not be very into digitalI didnt even have an iPhone
and now I cant disconnect. With Instagram you get a bit addicted, trying to
find interesting images and putting hearts on different pictures. I follow Idea
Books and some funny ones like Michel Gaubert, who does the music at
Chanel. Hes on it all day. I grew up in the 80s, and we played PacMan; now Instagram is like my game at night. It winds me
down, like watching a soap opera. As told to

Star of the new series Grace and Frankie, Jane Fonda opens up about her X-rated shoot
with Richard Avedon and why shes building a shrine to herself. By Romy Oltuski

JANE FONDA IS LOOKING at a portrait Richard Avedon took of her for the
September 1960 issue of Bazaar, her young,
gold-dusted face punctuated by a whimsical beauty mark painted on just above
her cheekbone. With a throaty laugh, she
recalls posing for another shot during the
same session that never made it into the
magazineone that rattled her so much,
she had the picture burned.
I remember being photographed naked
by Avedon and then going home and
becoming terrified that my father would
get angry, Fonda says. The next day
I went back to Richards studio and persuaded him to burn the negative, which
he didin front of me.
Fonda takes a second look at the frontally revealing Bazaar portrait that made
it through that shoot unscathed. Is this
really 1960? she marvels. Its funny,
I was recently in Atlantawhere Fonda has
had a home since 1991, when she married
media mogul Ted Turner; they later divorced.
I have a roomful of photo albums, and
I saw pictures of myself in 1960 that were
as different from this as night and day. If
I had any identity then, it was pretty shaky.
Its hard to imagine Fondasalacious
space babe in Barbarella, polarizing antiwar
activist, 80s workout trailblazer, and a
woman who now, at 77, continues to be
renowned for her utter fearlessnessas
anything less than thoroughly self-assured.
But, you know, Avedon had a way of
either bringing out your true identity,
she says, or else making you look like you
had one even if you didnt.

suggests using a natural boar bristle
brush to gently comb through hair,
working from the ends up to minimize
breakage. Be extra cautious of the
fragile ne hairs that frame your face,
which tend to be heavily heat-styled
and dyed and therefore more prone to
breakage, says Vigi. And help prevent
damage before it starts by regularly

NOURISH HAIR INSIDE AND OUT

Proteins are the building blocks of hair, so
along with a balanced diet, eat protein-rich
foods such as grass-fed and organic chicken,
beef, and eggs or plant-based legumes, nuts,
seeds, and hemp daily, says Stephanie
Middleberg, a dietitian in New York City,
who also recommends essential fatty
acids (walnuts, wild salmon, avocado, and
axseeds) and B vitamins (from kiwi and
pumpkin seeds) to grow healthy strands.

the pros share how to take your hair to great lengths.
USE A HYDRATING
HAIR MASK WEEKLY
A rinse-out conditioner adds moisture to
hair but may not be enough to allow it to
withstand constant styling and heat damage.
Also, frequent coloring leaves hair dry, brittle,
and in need of extra nourishment. Applying
a hair treatment that contains hydrating ingredients to help maintain as well as restore
hairs internal structure and elasticity will
prevent breakage so that hair can grow, says
Kevin Mancuso, creative director at Nexxus
New York Salon Care, who recommends
allowing a mask to soak into hair for three
to ve minutes before rinsing.

TODD BARRY

The ultimate head-to-toe guide to getting a awless faux glow. By Jessica Prince
A GOLDEN TAN can wipe years off your complexion and
trim inches from your waistline. But if you want to protect
yourself from the harmful effects of the sun (i.e., wrinkles,
brown spots, or, worse, skin cancer), the only safe glow is one
that comes from a bottle. Good news for all of you self-tanning

skeptics: The technology has changed dramatically, says

Sophie Evans, St.Tropezs celebrity tanning expert. Gone are
the days of smelling like an old sock for eight hours until your
color develops. New tanning formulations dry quickly, show
up instantly, and can be washed off in as little as an hour.

crucial for long-lasting results. Whether youre selftanning your face or body, you must exfoliate first.
FOR FACE Wash away rough, dry skin, and create
a smooth surface with a cleansing brush like the
Clarisonic Mia ($99). FOR BODY Use an oil-free
exfoliator (oil can leave a residue that causes streaks)
like Bliss Hot Salt Scrub ($38; 4), or try the Dermasuri
Deep Exfoliating Mitt ($19.99), which can be used
along with your regular body wash. Once your skin is
cleansed, exfoliated, and dried, make sure to moisturize
your knees, ankles, elbows, knuckles, and wristsareas
notorious for over-absorbing color and getting too dark.
We like Olay Ultra Moisture Lotion ($5.49).
CHOOSE THE RIGHT TANNER Wipes, sprays, mousses,

gels, lotions, oilswhen it comes to picking your formula,

the options can seem endless. FOR FACE The most goofproof approach is to use a product that allows you to build
color over time like BareMinerals Faux Tan Face Gradual
Glow ($24). Or try a wipe. Were fans of Dr. Dennis Gross
Skincare Alpha Beta Glow Pads ($35), which also contain skinbrightening ingredients. Theyre impossible to streak; rub the
wipe all over your face, ears, and neck in a circular motion. FOR
BODY Follow Evanss rule: On normal skin, use a mousse or a
gel. We like Jergens Instant Sun Sunless Tanning Mousse ($11.99)
or LOral Paris Sublime Bronze Self-Tanning Gele ($10.99).
For dry skin, lotions or oils are best. Try Clarins Self Tanning
Milk ($37) or St. Tropez Self Tan Luxe Dry Oil ($50). Avoid
using a spray for an allover application (it can drip and seriously stain your bathroom), and instead use only for your back
or to touch up specific areas between tanning sessions. Try
Hampton Sun Sunless Tanning Mist ($36). Whichever product you
select, go for a tinted formula with a built-in bronzer. It will help you
see where the color is going so you dont miss any spots.
APPLICATION SECRETS Even the most pricey tanner wont look
natural on your skin if you dont apply it correctly. FOR FACE If you

use a skin-care product that contains antiaging or acne ingredients like

retinol and glycolic, alpha hydroxy, and salicylic acids, apply them before

self-tanner, recommends New York dermatologist

Dennis Gross. Then moisturize afterward. FOR
BODY Work in sections to ensure even application,
and apply your color with a tanning mitt to keep
from staining your palms.Try Tarte Brazilliance Mitt
Duo ($12). Start from your feet and move upward so
that you dont create crease marks on your stomach or
arms, suggests Anna Stankiewicz, a New York tanning
expert. Try this: Feet to knees; knees to thighs; stomach
and chest; arms; back; neck. If one area gets too dark,
all is not lost. When Evans needs to lighten a dark patch
(common on the elbows, knees, and feet), she applies hairremoval cream like Nair with a Q-tip for three minutes.
It works really, really well, she says. Want to look extra
toned in a particular area? Apply an additional layer of color
under your arms, to your thighs, or on your stomach. Its
like an instant workout, says Stankiewicz.
MAINTENANCE TIPS To keep a fake tan looking flawless for days, remember that water is the enemy. Take short,
cool showers, then patdont rubyourself dry. People
dont realize the towel takes off your tan, says Stankiewicz.
If youre going to be at the beach or a pool, wear a waterresistant SPF, and apply a moisturizing tan-extending formula
daily. We like James Read Tan Accelerator ($34). Finally, buff
it off once a week, then start over again.Theres nothing worse
than old patches of self-tanner to give your (faux) tan away.
THE NONCOMMITTAL OPTION Bronzing makeup gives
you a temporary radiance without the hard work. FOR FACE
Try Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze & Glow ($80; 1) or Giorgio Armani Fluid Sheer ($62; 7). Either can be applied with your
fingers to warm your skin in seconds. If you prefer powder, we like
Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Multi-Colour SPF 15 ($65; 2). Apply
where the sun would hit your face naturally: your cheekbones, bridge of
the nose, and forehead. FOR BODY Try Givenchy Brume Bonne Mine
Powder Spray ($49; 3). It contains coconut oil extract, silica microspheres,
and bronzing pigments that disguise imperfections; buff it into your skin
with the Spray di Sol Kabuki Body Brush ($30; 5). Or for an allover
sheen, try Este Lauder Shimmering Body Oil Spray ($40; 6).

Skin pros share

their secrets for

bigger than they actually are is because theyre clogged with

dead skin cells mixed with oil. At that point, it means that
pores are deeply congested, so you have to get a facial. Most
people dont know how to do extractions correctly at home
and end up pushing the clog further down into the pore
or causing broken capillaries. My customized facial always
includes extractions as well as a chemical peel, microdermabrasion, and/or LED light therapy [$300]. The good
news is that you can avoid getting congested pores in
the first place by using products that contain glycolic
acid, salicylic acid, or retinol, which increase cell turnover
and help unclog, therefore making pores appear smaller.
My favorites are Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Peel [$88]
and my Resurface Retinol Reform [$95], which contains
5 percent retinol and lactic acid, plus niacinamide and aloe
vera, both known for their anti-inflammatory properties.

THE DERMATOLOGIST
NEAL SCHULTZ, NEW YORK When a clog forms, thats when
pores become distended. If they remain clogged, the surrounding collagen
and elastin fibers can overstretch permanently. If the clog is removed quickly,
pores can shrink back to their original size. Most cleansers, scrubs, and even
microdermabrasion cant get deep into pores. It requires synergy between multiple
chemical exfoliators that dissolve both solids (dead skin cells) and liquids (oil), like my
glycolic acid, tea tree oil, and pumpkin-seed-extract-based BeautyRx Dermstick for Pores
[$29], which clears up pores overnight. The other cause of enlarged pores is the destruction of collagen and elastin from sun damage. I recommend biweekly glycolic acid peels
[$225] and, if needed, Fraxel [$900], which boost collagen and tighten stretched pores.

THE MAKEUP ARTIST

TROY SURRATT, NEW YORK Primer minimizes the appearance of pores,
but it has to be silica-based, such as Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer [$52] and
LOral Paris RevitaLift Miracle Blur [$24.99]. They both have a filling effect
that blends into the skin. For every day, dewy, light-reflective makeup should be
avoided because it can emphasize pores. Dont use cream blushas your body
temperature increases throughout the day, it can pool in the openings of your
pores. I love milky matte foundations like Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation [$62], which has pigments that sit on the skins surface and make it look
smooth and even. Powder foundation such as Benefit Hello Flawless! [$34] is
also amazing at blurring large pores. Set foundation with a light translucent
powder like my Surratt Diaphane Loose Powder [$40]. You can touch up your
makeup during the day and its not going to cake.

She may play a queen on Game of Thrones,

but Emilia Clarke is Hollywoods new princess. By Laura Brown
Photographs by Norman Jean Roy

milia Clarke has gorgeous hair. Long, dark, just the right amount of body and wave.
Shes a walking LOral campaign. The irony, of course, is that few of us have actually
seen Clarkes hair, hidden as it is under Daenerys Targaryens regal waist-length blonde
locks in Game of Thrones.
Well, regal blonde wig. There are a few wigs, in fact, housed in the shows mythical
wig room at its studio base in Northern Ireland, Clarke explains over tea at Los
Angeless Sunset Marquis hotel. The wig room is incredible, she says. Every character has a wig almost, because weve all got bonkers hair. I have named mine. Seasons 1
and 2, she was just Dany. And then Diva came along [following Daeneryss Mother of
Dragons moment], shes completely huge. She didnt behave herself.
The joy of Clarke is that she doesnt behave herself either. While Game of Thrones is
bloody and sexy, Clarke is saucy. Plonking down in a fuzzy Coach sweater (featuring a
creature that looks like the love child of Karl Lagerfeld and a rabbit), faded Levis, and punky white Dior pumps, she
has a quick wit and a ribald humor. She admits to trying to blag one of Khaleesis dragon eggs (which birthed three
now poorly behaved teenage dragons), to no avail. Apparently Jay Z bought one for Beyonc, or something, she laughs.
I dont know. No eggs reside in the Clarke residence because they are really, really, really expensive and they are really
fucking heavy and serious works of art. Like Faberg? Eggs-actly! Eggs-cellent!
The past four years, since Game of Thrones first aired, have been a game changer for the British-born Clarke, 28, who
jobbed around in random television gigs before winning her role in 2010.I was literally so over the moon to have an
audition, just an audition, let alone for HBO, she recalls. I was doing a million jobs and thinking it would never happen. Not a chance. Not. A. Chance.
That was then. Now Clarke still gets a kick
out of the spectacle of it all. Thats my face;
its on that television. Its not TV, its HBO. But
every time I see it and every time I hear it, I wait
for [sings] the Sex and the City song every
time! And Game of Thrones is a monolith,
averaging more than 19 million viewers an
episode, besting HBOs previous cultural
capstone The Sopranos. There are Daenerys
Targaryen dolls and key rings, and scores of
fans who chant Khaleesi! (Clarkes queenly
moniker) like a mantra.
Not to mention the odd Hollywood obsessive.Someone took a fantasy in my head and played it in real life, Clarke
remembers. I was at a Golden Globes after-party and Channing Fucking Tatum came up to me, and his stunning
missus, Jenna. And they said, We call each other moon of my life and my sun and stars and all that. And I was like,
I cannot contain this. Please, can we all have something sexual together? Youre both beautiful, even just a hug. (To
date, no gentleman has tried this line on Clarke. Someone definitely should, she says, cackling.)
What Game of Throness success has afforded Clarke is a curious hybrid of plaudits andbecause she doesnt swan
around town in long blonde wigsrelative anonymity. That will soon change, however, with the July 1 release of
Terminator Genisys, in which she plays the legendary Sarah Connor. Connor has Clarkes natural-brown hair, and her
weapon of choice is not flying dragons but a large gun.
So rather more people will recognize Clarke soon enough. Yeah, I think things might change, she says cautiously.
It feels funny. I am about to sound really boring, but the life I love is really chill and modest. I dont quite know how
that is going to be too interrupted. She says naively. Currently, when Clarke is with family or friends, and someone
stops me and says, Oh, can I have a picture?, they keep forgetting that anyone knows me!
Clarke started her training for Terminator in January of last year, but dont expect her to be doing pull-ups like the
insanely buff Linda Hamilton in Terminator 2. This Sarah has a different backstory, she explains. Shes grown up
knowing what she had to do. As did Clarke: Get strong. The hours were so long and the guns were so heavy, so
I had to get myself into a place where I wouldnt crap out at four oclock. And also I am the only girl, so I wanted

to be like, Hey, boys, let me give you a run for your money. On working with Terminator 1.0 Arnold Schwarzenegger, she says, It never gets old. He was so much fun. I expected this massive ego to turn up, but he is this charming,
sweet, kind man. He got really excited to film the scenes.
The shoot wrapped last August and Clarke went straight to Game of Thrones through December, while commuting to Tuscany to make a supernatural thriller, Voice From the Stone, in the middle of it all. Can she speak Italian? Sto
morendo di fame fottutamente! That means I am fucking starving! Clarke is heading to London in a few days to start
shooting the romantic drama Me Before You, which not only gives her mushy joy but also allows her to be at home
in Hampstead for the first time in months.
Game of Thrones opened a lot of doors, she says. It opened them all. She has gotten her badass hit with Terminatorthat big, awesome storytelling. Like when you were a kid and you imagined it. Thats bonkers. But now, Im
wanting to do smaller character pieces, more serious things, less tennis ball and green sticks and special effects. For this
next one I dont need a stunt double or anything!
Of course, Clarke doesnt use a body double in Game of Thrones either, much to the delight of the swaths of the
shows fan base. In the first seasons final, epic scene, where Daenerys rises from the ashes, naked, with dragon hatchlings
alighting on her shoulder, she cheerfully shares a tale of charred boobies and a modesty patch.
The crew was a few cliffs over, she continues, so its me, four or five extras, and Iain Glen [the loyal-to-a-fault
Ser Jorah]. Iain does this thing where he lifts his head up and his face goes, Aahh, naked lady. But because they were
filming so far away, what he said was Great tits, love.
She lets out a huge guffaw. Im like, The cameras
not on you, can you stop commenting on how good
you think these breasts are?
Clarke has always had moxie, though. Her youthful determination was intriguingly mixed with her
love for fashion. When I was 11 or 12 or something,
people would say, Do you promise? Cross your heart,
hope to die? I would be like, I swear on Chanel,
she says. Everyone was like, Oh, shit, she means it.
Chanel was everything to the young Clarke, and
still is. My mom had a Chanel lipstick that was
bright red. My granny was really chic and really just
brilliant. When I describe her, Im sort of describing
Coco. She was right on it.
Clarke has played dress-up for years. My friends would say,Emilia is the most dressed person at anything. Ive always
wanted to jazz it up. The previous day she was paparazzied at LAX airport in a pink Simone Rocha tulle coat, placing
her white Dior pumps on the security tray. Oh, the Rocha ... She lets out a moan. A bright pink little foam skirt,
with a stiff white lace jacket.Thats one of my favorite things ever. I get one thing I love and I wear it to death. Pink
is a theme. Pink Cline shoes, super pretty, they go with everything. Though now they are covered in mud and shit.
Because I wear these lovely clothes, lovely shoes, and then I will go for a walk on Hampstead Heath. I come back and
they are ruined. My mother never lets me hear the end of it.
What cant she wear that she would love to? Shorts, she replies instantly. I cant do it. My thighs, they are here.
They are making themselves known, and they like skirts, they like trousers. But they dont like shorts. She admires
the style of other ladies, Half because they are fit [Brit for hot]. Like Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. But Im like,
I cant wear that because I am not a seven-foot-tall goddess with perfect everything.
While she loves fashion, Clarke is far from a fashion person. I am so not a fashionista. I walk into those parties, and
Im like, Hey, guys! Everyones looking really cool, sipping on some mental cocktail, and Im like, Can I have a cup
of tea? Such an idiot.
For an idiot, she does grand so well. In Game of Thrones, debating an upcoming battle, Daenerys announces to her
latest consort, I am a queen, not a butcher. Ever tried that at home? Oh, yes! Clarke grins. She adopts an expression
both solemn and majestic: I want the chicken, not the beef.

Rust? Tangerine? Kelly green? Mustard? Lilac? Making sense of the seasons new hues. By Lisa Armstrong
WHEN MICHAEL KORS, who knows everything about style, says that your beloved white-shirt-and-black-pants ensemble makes you look
like a waiter, as he once told me when we met in Madrid (where they really know how to supercharge their classic style through color), its
time to reevaluate some things. And for the foreseeable future, every time you see a white shirt and black pants youll wonder, How much
should I tip? So thank you, fall, because if this seasons runways are any indication, color is everywhere: yellows, reds, pastelsand a whole
bunch of hitherto unheard-of shades. Miuccia Prada set the pace with the most astonishing combinations (a coral bag with Dijon-mustard
pants was one advanced option). After that, Diors raspberry thigh-high boots and Guccis burgundy-and-red clashes made sense. Even shoes
have gotten the memo: Resistance is futile. If you pride yourself on the disciplined sobriety of your closets color scheme, open your heart.
The right color, in even the smallest dose, can take years off you and your favorite outfit. First, however, a strategy.

WHEN INTERESTING BECOMES A COMPLIMENT Designers

outdid themselves in the so-wrong-its-right (and sometimes so-wrong-its-vile) department. Here are some of their best ideas: pinky taupe
with mustard and yellow, topped with a navy collar (Marc Jacobs); lavender and leaf green (Gucci); and cobalt and orange (Roksanda).
Jonathan Saunders (tomato red, cerulean, and white) said that he was influenced by the palettes of artists Allen Jones, Bridget Riley, and
Victor Vasarely. And why not? Once your eye grows accustomed to violet and mint green (and it will, the 10th time you walk into Barneys
or cruise ShopBAZAAR.com), your beloved navy will seem a bit, well, safe.Which leads us to the knowledge that

NOT ALL NEUTRALS ARE CREATED EQUAL Theres more to camel than

meets the eye. Its variants range from slightly milky coffee to the subtlest pinky taupes, as seen at Gucci and Alexander McQueen. Powdery
pinks are a gorgeous way to break up navy or black, says Ruth Chapman, a cofounder of Matchesfashion.com. Not to mention that theyre
much softer than white. But why stop there? If gray is your be all and end all, try silver for a change, which also happens to look great with
camel. The freshest neutral, however, is khaki. It works with just about everythingas, strangely, does cobalt. Lesson: Treat neutrals as color
and color as neutrals (why cant electric blue be a base?). Neutrals shouldnt flatten but exalt.

THOSE 70S SHADES Mustard, ocher, brown, and orange were splashed all over the fall runways. If youre
scarred by flashbacks to your childhood bedroom, youll slavishly avoid adopting a full-on 70s palette. But lets be reasonable: Brown is a
terrific option for boots and bags, allowing their details to shine much more than black does. Browns make great coats too (try them with
a red scarf or bag), while ocher can offer an edgier alternative. If this specific shade makes you feel like a corpse, look back to camel.

IN MOURNING FOR BLACK It will never be entirely over for black, even though midnight and
navy have given it a beating lately. And, now, enter darkest eggplant, deep purples, and bottle greens to the competition. A peacock-blue
lace dress (as seen at Michael Kors) is as sophisticated as black, less obvious than red, and much softer and more surprising than either of
them. Swap your default white shirt for blue chambray and observe how much more modern you look (and feel).

HEAD-TO-TOE COLOR That aqua-green coat-and-bag combination lookedmomentarilyadorable on

the models, but you and I both know that this really works only on runways and Dancing With the Stars. But that doesnt mean there is nothing
for us in this category. When it comes to navy, gray, browns, camels, and nude pinks, toning shades of the same color can be both elongating and
slimming. Want to go for sea foam? Any of these pieces, worn with your workaday neutrals or denim, will provide an instant wardrobe refresh.

MEET SOME NEW ACCESSORIES Retro or bright-toned bag charms, (fake) fur pom-poms

(from Helen Moore or real ones from Fendi), and animal mascots (Shrimps) that dangle off your bag, supersize brooches (Prada), elbowlength gloves from emerald to pumpkin, and block-colored shoes (check out the purple heels on the ones at Fendi and the contrast buckles at Miu Miu) are an easier-than-easy way to dip a toe into the new color trends. Befriend silk scarves againan emerald one, say, wrapped
around the handle of a powder blue bag or knotted artfully at the necktheyre all part of the beginners starter color pack.

THE ICK FACTOR It works like this: Last week you thought red and pink clashed and that peach and mint were
off-putting. Now youre not so sure. This is merely a sign that the anti-monochrome movement is working. When in doubt or puzzled
that a shade that should look good doesnt, consider the materials. Cashmere, velvet, chiffon, and duchesse satin add subtle depth to strong
hues. Patent leather and PVC can make the sweetest pastels look interestingly subversive. Sign up for the full-immersion program. Because
color untamed can reenergize far more than just your style.

To be consistent, he says, is essential, for his aim is always to create

something that is purely his own, rather than being influenced
by anyone else, or by the passing whims of fashion. This is the
problem with the world today, he says in response to a comment
I make about the importance of brand identity at a time when
fashion can seem overly homogeneous.Nobody wants to take
risks, to risk being themselves. Here then is the paradox of Armani:
In fashion, it is a risky business to remain, at heart, unchanged.
And given the seismic shifts of history that he has lived through,
this consistency seems all the more remarkable. For Armani was
a child of war-torn Europe, born in July 1934 and raised under
Mussolinis fascist dictatorship, in the northern Italian city of
Piacenza, which was bombed heavily by the Allies in World
War II. The middle child of three, Giorgio had an older brother,
Sergio (now deceased), and a younger sister, Rosanna (subsequently employed by Armani; she has since retired, but Giorgios
nieces are still involved in the business).
His father was employed by a transport
company; his mother was a housewife,
and did her best to keep the family fed
during wartime privations and in the
aftermath, when, as Armani remembers,
there was no money and nothing to eat.
(This was also the time when his father
was arrested and imprisoned for several
months, on charges of having worked for
the fascist state.)

mong the framed

photographs scattered

desks around Armanis
apartment is a particularly striking one
of him as a young boy
on a beach with his mother. She is darkhaired and chic in a bathing suit and long
skirt, her timeless appearance an apparent
precursor to her sons vision of natural
beauty. My mother was elegant, he says, when I ask him about
the picture. When she passed by, people turned around. But she
didnt show off this sculptural quality of her face. (Is it too fanciful to wonder whether his career as a designer was in part a means
to illuminateor understandthat mysterious sculptural quality?)
When I ask him to say more about his mother, he is elusive,
although his elliptical answers nevertheless suggest the shadows
of his childhood. It was a difficult time, he says, not only because
of the poverty but also the uncertainty of the era. Even before
the war, he remembers being afraid. We went to this holiday
camp every year, where my mother was in charge, he remarks
in response to a question I ask about whether he recalls any of
her clothes, or his own, as a boy. I remember that my mother
made me put on a T-shirt, to cover up in the sun, and that I was
afraid of the pedal boat, made of strips of white lacquered wood.

Then the real war came, and the bombs and the fear. (Thus his
mother could provide clothing that would protect her son from
the dangers of the sun but not from the bombs that were to
drop from the sky.)
Worst of all was his experience at the age of nine, when he
was walking past the local cinema with his sister, who was four
years old at the time. They looked at the film posters for Snow
White, and then he crossed the road to see some friends, who had
discovered an unexploded shell. Suddenly the gunpowder caught
fire; Giorgio was covered in flames, and burned all over. During
his month in the hospital, he was placed in a vat of pure alcohol
to remove the dead skin. More than 70 years later, the episode
seems almost symbolic; a young boy with terrible burns who is
blinded for a time but survives the flames and arises, phoenix-like,
as a man whose career is based on an understanding of how to
look and who thereafter makes a fortune by designing soft second
skins for people to wear.
Armani sounds calm in his recollection
of the accident. I was not so conscious
at the time, he says.I closed my eyes and
didnt open them again for 20 days. I could
smell the linden trees in the hospital gardens in bloom, but I couldnt see them.
It was hard for me because they werent
sure if I would ever be able to see again.
Astonishingly, he survived without visible
scarring, apart from a small mark where
his shoe had burned into his foot. And
when he did recover his sight, his ambition
was not to be a fashion designer but a
doctor. After school, he spent three years
studying medicine at university, which
was then interrupted by two years of
compulsory military service. However, he
did not return to his medical studies, in
part because he felt he had to start earning a living, to help his parents. At this
point, the family moved to Milan, where
Armani was hired at a department store,
initially as a window-dresser, then as a menswear buyer.
In the mid-1960s, he got his first job as a designer, working
for the Italian textile magnate Nino Cerruti, and his exceptional
talent was soon evident, but it was not until he met Sergio
Galeotti that Armani felt sufficiently confident to launch his
own brand. Galeotti, a fledgling architect, was a decade younger
than Armani; the relationship between the two men was a powerful combination of the personal and the professional. Even
though Armani felt a deep sense of responsibilityfor his young
partner as well as for his familyit was Galeotti who gave him
the confidence to leave a salaried job. In 1975, the two men sold
their Volkswagen and used the money to set up a small company,
which swiftly rose to the forefront of European fashion, and
thence to America. By 1982, Armani was celebrated for his
outstanding ability to make both men and women feel assured

On the beach in Rimini, Italy, with his mother, in 1939

yet also at ease in fluid clothes that removed the constrictions of traditional tailoring while retaining their ability to
confer dignity on the wearer.
Tragically, as Armani the company went from strength
to strength, Galeotti was battling with AIDS, and died at
the age of 40 in 1985. It was a terrible loss, and even now
Armani looks visibly moved when his former partners
name is mentioned. When Sergio died, I expressed great
strength, because I wanted this work of ours to continue
to appear in the future, he says.I wanted people to appreciate what Sergio had done. But neither Sergio nor I were
prepared for this, for the violence that life sometimes brings.
Perhaps, I say, it is the knowledge that life can be too short
that gives us the impetus to make our mark, and creativity
arises from an understanding of death and suffering. Armani
nods. To be creative, you need to be able to respond to
pain, he says. If everything goes well, you get boring.
He inclines his head again, very slightly, when I quote
Chanel, who declared that fashion is born to die, but style
is eternal. I like that, he replies. So could the search for
a lasting style be a hymn to life? I ask. Yes, he says, a
hymn to life, but accompanied by the huge difficulties of
finding your way in a world that forces you to face reality.

ix years ago, he continues, he was seriously

ill (with hepatitis), but at the time, I didnt
want to admit it. Now, he says, I find
people stopping me on the street, asking
me how I am, wanting to touch my hand.
Armani says he always tells them he is fine,
then he remarks that creative work gives
you an almost indissoluble connection with people. To
which I add that dressing someone is one of the most
intimate things you can do for them; when I pause, he
finishes my thought for me: Because you take those clothes
with you, close to your body.
Then he moves to the edge of the sofa, as if to indicate
that the interview is over. Hurriedly, I appeal for one more
question. And its the question everyone asks, he says
resignedly. What are you going to do next? But Id rather
you didnt ask me that.
I say, How can we understand the future if we dont
understand the past? To which his unexpected response
is as follows: Another question: Do I believe in love? Ask
me, do I believe in love?
So I ask him. Yes, I do, he says, looking at me full on,
so I can see that his unblinking blue eyes are filled with
tears, visible even in the early twilight of the winter afternoon. There can be nothing without love. No money,
no power. Love is very important. When you wake up in
the morning, you need to know that somebody else is
waking up, thinking of you.
Then Mr. Armani stands up, shakes my hand, and leaves
the room just as quietly as he first came in.

WHAT LIES

BENEATH
When investing in the seasons more revealing cuts, its often whats on the inside that counts. By Priya Rao
Photograph by Michael Avedon

FROM THE SCOOP-NECK tops at Tom Ford and Givenchy to the sheer dresses at Valentino and Rodarte to the
high-slit skirts at Altuzarra and Anthony Vaccarello, designers ramped up the sex appeal for Fall 2015. Skin-,
shape-, and body-baring looks were all over the runways. But while clothes that reveal more than just a
chic sense of style can radiate fabulousness on the catwalk, theyre often not so easy to pull off in real life
if youre not Rihanna or Miley Cyrus. Fortunately, there are ways of navigating some of the seasons
riskier propositions. The right undergarment not only offers coverage but also helps define the
silhouette and provides support. Lingerie is all about enhancing the look without adding any
distraction to it, says Suzy Biszantz, CEO of La Perla North America. Take those ethereal transparent
dresses that are cropping up everywhere. To make the look a tad safer, Biszantz suggests wearing
a traditional nude or black full slip with Lycra. An opaque slip with light support and shaping
gives you coverage in all the key spots, all the way from the chest to the top of the knee, she
says. Plus, shapewear keeps you sucked in and creates a lovely shape for the body. Similarly, when
wearing an extra-low-cut scoop-neck topor any deep-dcolletage blouseshe recommends
trying a demi-balconette bra instead of a full-cup style, which could poke out problematically
under a plunging neckline. The demi-balconette is cut low enough that even with a very
low top you wont see any of the bra, she explains. And, just as important, the demi style is
structured enough to boost your proverbial assets. However, the more substantial those assets
are to begin with, the more carefully you need to tread. The deep-V neckline, which Hedi
Slimane showed in his minidresses at Saint Laurent, presents an even greater degree of difficulty. Although reusable adhesive and double-sided tape are always options, they dont
provide support. Real women need coverage, says Biszantz. And its hard to look and feel
at ease with no foundation. The real dilemma lies in how low you can go. As with scoop
necks, the more naturally well-endowed you are, the more mindful you need to be. For a
medium-deep V that hits right below your sternum, Biszantz suggests a plunge bra. Choose
one thats lace or sheer tulle with some coverage on the sides so its not totally unpractical, she
says. But those navel-baring tops at Chlo? Thats a trick question, isnt it? she jokes. They
might just be too extreme. For those slit-to-the-hip skirts, Biszantz advises wearing a fuller panty.
A higher-cut boy short or brief in an opaque fabric allows you to feel covered but still sexy. This
cut also creates a smooth, taut shape on the backside with no visible linesor visible anything
underneath. Its a slightly retro, fashion-oriented silhouette but conservative, so you shouldnt feel
uneasy, she says. Because at the end of the day theres nothing less appealing than looking (and feeling)
uncomfortable and self-conscious in your clothes. Stick to the silhouettes you feel good in and the underpinnings that give them a secure foundation. As Biszantz puts it, When worn properly, your lingerie can
help you wear the most daring looks. Because leaving little to the imagination sometimes requires a lot of it.
Cinch it. Bustier and briefs, La Perla. For smooth skin, try La Prairie Skin Caviar Luxe Souffl Body Cream ($315).

How Jason Wu
became Hugo Bosss
new leading man.
By Christine Whitney
Photographs by Will Davidson
Directors cut. Dress and
shoes, Boss.
FASHION EDITOR: Joanna Hillman

Julianne Moore let me hold her Oscar.

I asked if it was lled with chocolate.

heyre here for her, says designer Jason Wu

of the cluster of paparazzi thats begun to
form around our Harpers Bazaar photo
shoot in Manhattans West Village. The
her in question is model Hilary Rhoda,
who at 5-foot-11 (plus heels) towers over
Wu in a metal-embroidered dress from
his Fall 2015 collection for Boss, Hugo
Bosss premium line. Even today, dressed
in a tuxedo,Wu, who was named artistic
director of Boss womenswear in 2013,
doesnt look all that different than he did
eight years ago, when he dropped out of fashion school at Parsons to
start his namesake company. But his youthful appearance belies all he has
accomplished: At the age of 32, Wu has already established himself as a
serious designer, having famously dressed First Lady Michelle Obama for
her husbands 2009 inauguration, as well as overseeing his own growing
label. Now, for the 91-year-old German-based Hugo Boss, he has been
charged with breathing new life into one of Europes biggest fashion brands.
To get the irresistible Boss puns out of the way: Wu didnt watch the
80s sitcom Whos the Boss? He is, however, in agreement with Sheryl
Sandberg that we should ban the word bossy. And he hasnt had any
terrible bosses because, until this latest gig, he has been his own bossand,
in the words of hip-hop sage Rick Ross, is like a boss in every way.
But Wu didnt know what he was in for when he showed up at
New Yorks Gansevoort hotel for his first encounter with Bosss top brass.
In fact, he didnt even know who he was meeting. Id been told it was
a European company, Wu says. When Chief Brand Officer Christoph
Auhagen arrived and broached the proposition of hiring him to design
for Boss, he was floored. I was like, Why me? he says. It seemed like
the oddest match. I thought of Boss as a menswear brand, and I wasnt
super knowledgeable about the womens side, which is only 15 years old.
That perception was in part what Wu was brought on to change. Six
months of meetings, three visits to Boss HQs campus in the town of
Metzingen (which Wu describes as like the set of the movie Gattaca),
and one conversation with longtime friend Diane Kruger later, Wu
decided to throw his lot in with the company. I asked Dianes opinion
before I took the job, he recalls. Diane said, I think you should take it;
it has a lot of potential. You should do something interesting with it.
Since showing his first Boss collection in February of last year, Wu has
been working tirelessly to put his stamp on the brand. That has involved
updating the Hugo Boss oeuvre with pieces like the slinky midi-length
slipdresses he showed for fall while maintaining the consistency its customers rely on. I think I bring an outside point of view and am able to pick
out what I think is really amazing and express that, he says. Sometimes
when you see things every day, you dont see how amazing they are.
Hugo Bosss CEO, Claus-Dietrich Lahrs, for one, has been impressed by
Wus ability to integrate his own ideas into his work for the Boss label
as he also reinforces and enhances the brands identity. Jason is a true
cosmopolitan, Lahrs says. He has a keen eye and the ability to hit the
nail on the head without ever losing sight of the commercial aspect.

182

Though Wu flies to Germany every month, his German is still terrible,

he says. (I know when people are talking about me, he adds.) He also
has yet to fully come to terms with the national cuisine. (The company
cafeteria has named the off-the-menu, American-style prosciutto-andcheese sandwich that he always requests after him.) Nevertheless, Wu has
immersed himself in the Boss universe, and in his two years there has seen
his sphere of influence grow. This year I took on more responsibilities,
he says. Mens fragrance, eyewear, watches, retail conceptsbasically all
the categories. Wu says that its all in service of a concerted effort to give
Hugo Boss an overarching theme and the polish and consistency that an
international brand needs on every platform, from the airport perfume
counter to our concessions at Saks and Harrods.
Case in point: Bosss new Bespoke handbag, in stores in July. The
style evokes the houses renowned reputation for tailoring, and the
cuff-link-inspired hardware is meant to connect the womens line with
the brands menswear origins. But its also a crucial first step in building
Bosss accessories repertoire, which Wu describes as an area of great
potential. We have a huge accessories department in Switzerland thats
amazing, he explains. They even have a little robot that mows the lawn.
Its important to him that people understand that the Boss DNA goes
beyond suits. Were known for menswear, were known for tailoring, but
theres so much more, says Wu, pointing to the companys involvement
in sports, including its sponsorship of last years World Cupwinning
soccer team. Does Wu himself have a jock side? Im terrible at sports,
but I can appreciate it, he says, laughing. I was on the ski patrol at one
point at my boarding school in Massachusetts.

nother part of Wus task is to define the Boss

woman, whom he describes as sophisticated
but also strong. The actresses Kate Bosworth,
Nicola Peltz, Dakota Johnson, Kruger, and Julianne Moore are just a handful of the women hes
recruited to draw attention to the brand. Shes
so poised, Wu says of Moore, who sat front row
at his show just four days before her Academy
Awards victory in February. The day after the show I flew to L.A. to
shoot the campaign, and on awards night I went to a party, and she let
me hold her Oscar. I asked if it was filled with chocolate. Then there
are models like Rhoda, Amber Valletta, Edie Campbell, and Abbey Lee
Kershaw, the last of whom appeared in the spring campaign. Shes a
really cool person with the right spirita total girlboss.
For all the frenzy, power, and cultural grid-skipping of his new gig,
though, Wu is still true to Wu. We were shooting in Times Square
yesterday, and I was thinking, People dont dress up so much anymore,
he observes. But at Hugo Boss they do. All of the guys are always in
suits, supersharp. If Hilary [Rhoda] and I were in tuxes on the Hugo
Boss campus, we wouldnt look out of place. But I have not changed
my sneakers. I remain me. I get my hands dirty; I need to be on the
floor pinning. Its like a triathlon when Im there. And what kind of
boss is he? Collaborative, Wu asserts. A brand is about creating a
world. Its a work in progress.

Well suited. Jacket,

pants, and boots, Boss.

air shaft. Frizz occurs when the thousands of little
ke up the c
uticle layer are lifted and
in disarray. This happens when your hair is damaged and dry but also
when its especially humid outside, when moisture is absorbed and swells your strands, explains Tim Rogers, creative
director of Living Proof and a stylist at Sally Hershberger salon in New York. As a result, the shingles lift, and your hair
appears frizzy instead of smooth and defined. Here, the recipe for control. IT ALL BEGINS WITH YOUR CUT Keep
your eye on the cutting tool your stylist chooses, and if you see a razor, run, says Dove celebrity stylist Mark Townsend.
A razor can slide down the shaft and shred the ends, creating split ends and a plethora of frizz, he warns. And
never let your ends get over-layered. A bit of bluntness keeps frizz in check. SHOWER POWER How you wash and
condition is critical, says Rogers. Deep-cleansing and clarifying shampoos rough up your cuticles, so avoid those.
Look for sulfate-free shampoos, which are much gentler on your locks. Try Paul Mitchell MirrorSmooth Shampoo
($21). Dont overshampoo, says Townsend. It can strip your hair of natural oils and leave it dry. Just two or three times
a week is enough; on other days, use a cleansing conditioner. Try Pantene Pro-V Damage Repair Cleansing Conditioner ($6.99). STYLING SECRETS After your shower, dont towel-dry your hair, says Townsend, since strands get
caught and roughed up in all those teeny loops. Instead, sop up wetness with a microfiber towel or a T-shirt, and use
a wide-tooth comb to gently detangle. Next, apply an anti-frizz product while hair is still wet. The experts agree:
Once hair starts to dry, youre losing the game. Living Proof No Frizz Humidity Shield ($22), which uses the brands
OFPMA molecule to coat each strand with a hydrophobic layer, is weightless, promises Rogers. Another good
option: dry oils. They absorb into the hair instead of sitting on top, which can leave fine hair flat, Townsend says.
I like Serge Normant Dry Oil Spray [$24]. Spray it on your hands and then rake through the hair, he suggests.
R+Co Foil Frizz Control Spray ($27) is another good choice. If you prefer a cream texture, try Redken Frizz Dismiss
Smoothing Control Cream ($22). Shu Uemura Art of Hair Wonder Worker ($33), a leave-in/styling hybrid that also
protects hair from heat damage, should be your next step if youre going to blow out your hair. Steer clear of products that contain a lot of alcohol, such as some hair sprays, mousses, and gels, says Townsend, which can dry out the
hair. And adjust your routine if you love salt spray, he cautions: Salt absorbs moisture and leaves the cuticle wide
open, so it can lead to tons of frizz. I use a drop or two of Dove Silk Crme [$6.19] before using it. HOT TOOLS
Avoid scorching your hair at all costs. Ionic dryers quickly break up water molecules, allowing you to use a lower
heat setting while drying your hair faster, so theres less damage. Try Conair Ceramic Ionic Styler ($35). Some new
models of flat irons have plates coated with nourishing oils that can seal in shine and smoothness, says Townsend.
The Cricket Ultra Smooth Professional Hair Dryer ($100) has a filter infused with argan oil and keratin protein.
The Agave Healing Vapor Iron ($149) features a reservoir of smoothing, shine-enhancing agave sugars. SALON
SOLUTIONS A professional smoothing treatment can keep your hair frizz-free for months. While some still do
contain formaldehydeparticularly those that promise to squelch curls along with frizzthe ones that are purely
frizz-focused are usually free of the chemical. The Cezanne Perfect Finish treatment (from $350) opens the cuticle
and envelops each strand in a silk protein, and can smooth hair for three to four months, claims Kattia Solano, owner
of New Yorks Butterfly Studio Salon. Other effective choices: Goldwell Kerasilk and Trissola Solo. Finally, consider
the benefits of hair color, says New York colorist Sharon Dorram. She recommends a semipermanent gloss or glaze,
which deposits color and smooths the cuticle and lasts up to six weeks. If all else fails, dont forget that a disheveled
air trends. A handful of bobby pins may be the greatest frizz buster of all.

Voluminous hair is always

on trend, says hairstylist
Nicolas Eldin, who created
this look on model Hilary
Rhoda. Its classic, and it
always looks chic and feminine, he adds. Start your
style in the shower by giving limp tresses a boost with
Fekkai Full Blown Volume
Shampoo and Conditioner
($30 each). Make sure to
rinse out the conditioner well;
otherwise you risk weighing
your hair down, Eldin warns.
Next, prep for your blow-dry
by dividing hair into sections
and applying Nexxus volumizing foam mousse from
roots to tips. Using a round
brush, dry each section in an
upward motion away from
your face, advises Eldin. We
like Rusks powerful dryer.

EXPERT TIP
To achieve maximum
volume, ip your head
upside down while
spritzing on hair spray,
says Eldin.

BUILD

BODY

Once your hair is fully dry,

wrap sections in Velcro rollers and place across your
crown to create volume all
over the head, says Eldin.
Let the rollers set for a few
minutes, remove, and brush
out with a Mason Pearson
brush for added bounce.

How

ith her saucer-shaped eyes and lithe dancers bearing, Audrey Hepburn bewitched many of the

20th centurys boldest photographers. Among them was Cecil Beaton, who frequently shot for Bazaar.
In this picture, published in the April 1964 issue, Hepburn wears an Edwardian costume on the

set of one of her best-known lms, My Fair Lady, for which Beaton himself designed her Oscar-winning
wardrobe. Beatons images of the actress will be on view, along with those by photographers
like Richard Avedon and Norman Parkinson as well as rarely seen family albums, in the exhibition
Audrey Hepburn: Portraits of an Icon, at Londons National Portrait Gallery, starting in July.
