THE HEALING OF THAT WOMAN, ST VERONICA, DEMONSTRATED OUR LORD JESUS POWER TO
CLEANSE US FROM OUR SINS AND TO HEAL ALL OUR AFFLICTIONS THE SPIRITUAL AND THE
PHYSICAL.
According to the Old Covenant Laws, any type of haemorrhaging caused
ceremonial defilement, which imposed religious and social restrictions upon
the sufferers for ANY CONTACT WITH BLOOD WAS STRICTLY PROHIBITED AND AVOIDED AT
ALL COSTS.
This wretched suffering woman regarded herself as being unclean and had
followed all the requirements as a social outcast but SHE HAD REACHED SUCH A
DEGREE OF MISERY AND DESPERATION THAT SHE RISKED FURTHER SHAME AND HUMILIATION IN
THE CONVICTION THAT ONLY CHRIST COULD HEAL HER.
It was a risk that she was willing to take after all what more could she lose?
People had already taken everything she had, but now GOD WOULD GRANT HER
WHAT SHE REALLY NEEDED!
EVERYTHING THAT IS TOUCHED BY GOD BECOMES SANCTIFIED HOLY AND WILL PASS THAT
ONLY
GOD CAN SAVE OR REDEEM US! ONLY THROUGH OUR LORD AND SAVIOUR, JESUS
CHRIST, ARE WE GENUINELY FREED FROM SUFFERING AND BONDAGE TO SIN!

St Barbara
THE
St Barbara lived during the reign of Emperor Maximian (305 311). Her pagan
father, Dioscoros, was a rich, illustrious man of Heliopolis, Syria who, after the
death of his wife, devoted himself to the education and upbringing of his
beloved daughter.
Realising her extraordinary beauty and intelligence, Dioscoros hid her in a tall
tower where only her pagan teachers were allowed to see her, but from which
she had a good view of hills stretching out into the distance.
By day St Barbara gazed longingly upon the wooded hills, the flowing rivers and
the meadows covered with a most colourful blanket of flowers, and at night,
she stared at the harmonious and majestic heavens that twinkled with an
amazing spectacle of inexpressible, immense beauty.
From her early years she began to contemplate the identity of the Creator of such
splendour, and gradually became utterly convinced that the soulless pagan
idols were merely lifeless works of human hands that could never have
created the natural beauty and limitless magnificence of the heavens and
earth.
Her intense desire to know the True, Almighty God so consumed St Barbaras soul
that she decided to devote her entire life to this Living, All Powerful God, and to
live in Chastity and Service to God.
Reports of her great beauty and wisdom spread throughout the city and many
suitors sought her hand in marriage but despite the entreaties of her father, St
Barbara refused them all and she even dared to caution her father that his
persistence might separate them forever.
Thinking that his daughters temperament had been affected by her secluded life
in the tower, Dioscoros allowed her to freely choose her own friends and
acquaintances.
However, unknown to him, St Barbara met young Christian maidens who taught
her all about the One True God and the Holy Trinity. By Divine Providence, a
Priest arrived from Alexandria, and disguised as a merchant, he instructed her
in all aspects of Christianity and prepared her for Holy Baptism, which he
performed before returning to his homeland.
At the same time, a luxurious bathhouse was being built for Dioscoros with two
windows on the south side, but St Barbara, taking advantage of her fathers
absence, asked them to make a third window, thereby forming a Trinity of
Light.
On one of the walls, St Barbara traced a cross into the marble with her finger and
later, her footprints were mysteriously imprinted on the stone steps, and the
water had great Healing Powers, which St Symeon Metaphrastes compared to
the Blessed, Healing Streams of the great Jordan River and the Pool of Siloam.
When Dioscoros returned and saw the changes to the bathhouse, St Barbara told
him about how she had come to know about the Saving Power of the Son of
God - in contrast to the futility of worshipping man-made, lifeless idols.
Dioscoros was outraged by her confession and, seizing a sword, he tried to strike
her with it but she fled from the house into the woods and hills. Her father
chased after her, driven by insane fury, until he was blocked by a hill that had
opened up and concealed St Barbara in a crevice.
After a long, fruitless search for his daughter, Dioscoros encountered two
shepherds who showed him the cave wherein St Barbara had hidden. Having
dragged her out of the cave, he beat her mercilessly, and then placed her

under guard in an attempt to wear her down with hunger and thirst thus
forcing her to renounce Christ.
After failing to persuade her to reject her unwavering Faith in the One True Living
God, Dioscoros handed her over the Martianos, the Prefect, who ordered her to
be beaten and humiliated until she broke down.
However, each night St Barbara fervently prayed to her Heavenly Bridegroom
who appeared before her and healed her terrible wounds. The next morning,
finding her healed and still alive, the persecutors subjected the lovely Virgin
Martyr to even worse and prolonged torture.
In the crowd of witnesses of St Barbaras Martyrdom, was a Virtuous Christian, St
Juliana, whose heart was filled with profound sympathy for the beautiful
young girl who so bravely faced her tormentors without wavering in her Faith,
and yearning to also suffer for Christ, St Juliana loudly denounced the brutal
torturers who quickly seized her and subjected her to the same, extreme
cruelties.
Their naked bodies were clawed, scraped and wounded with sharp hooks, after
which they were dragged naked and bloody through the city, having to suffer
the derision, mockery and spitting of the jeering, blood-thirsty mobs of pagans.
Through the Prayers of St Barbara, our Lord sent His Angel to cover their exposed
flesh with splendid Robes that hid them from the sight of the multitude, as they
were dragged along to their beheading.
Dioscoros himself delivered the fatal blow of the sword to his own daughter and
consequently, Divine Justice soon punished both Martianos and Dioscoros who
were both struck down and killed by lightning.
In the 6th Century the Holy Relics of St Barbara were transferred to Constantinople,
until 600 years later when they were transferred to Kiev by Barbara, the
daughter of the Byzantine Emperor, Alexios Comnenos, who had married the
Russian Prince, Michael Izyaslavich. Presently they rest at Kievs St Vladimir
Cathedral where an Akathist to St Barbara is served every Tuesday.
Many Pious Orthodox Christians chant the Troparion of St Barbara every day,
thereby recalling our Saviours Divine Promise that those who remember her
and her Martyrdom would be preserved from sudden, unexpected death, and
would not depart this life without the Benefit of the Holy Mysteries.

SAVING FAITH AND BEING BAPTISED ARE INTERWOVEN we cannot claim to have
one without the other!
For as many of you as were Baptised into Christ have put on Christ, is our
ancient Baptism Hymn that is chanted during the Procession of the
Newly Regenerated into the assembly the Holy Church of Christ.
WE SHARE ONE HUMAN NATURE IN CHRIST.
Therefore, assessing people according to our own opinion, attitude, value,
gender or ethnicity is forbidden in Christs Holy Church,
If we are genuinely trying to imitate Christ we must do so without fail: He
never discriminated against anyone so how dare we do so!
ANY DISCRIMINATION, BIGOTRY, INTOLERANCE OR PREJUDICE WILL CAUSE US SERIOUS
SPIRITUAL CONDEMNATION, which - unless we quickly correct ourselves
with sincere Repentance - will affect our Eternity!
We are all one in nature and equal in dignity.
