KIM
One of the main target audiences for videogames is young
people. In 2011, a study found that a shocking 64 million American
children aged
between 2 and 17 play video games. Thats a 9
percent increase since 2009!

But why did such a significant increase occur in just two
years? And just how bad is that number now, 4 years later?

KIM
Which such easy access to games its no wonder people play
them so
much. In 2012, the gaming industry earned around $79
billion, with
video game consoles bringing in $34 billion and
mobile phone games bringing in around $10 billion. However as of
2015, the gaming industry
has been making around $115 billion,
with consoles bringing in $55
billion and phone games
bringing in $21 billion. (Credit Statista) So
clearly, mobile
gaming has gotten more popular, but so has console gaming at a
much faster rate. But, who is responsible for this increase? Do
you play video games?

ARCHIVAL FOOTAGE OF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP OF GAMING.
KIM
Some video games have now become considered part of what
is known as
an E-Sport. Games such as League of Legends,
an online multiplayer game where teams of 5 go against each
other, have such a big following
that they managed to sell out
Wembley Arena for their world
championships. Even BBC Sport
broadcast the championships on live TV! Despite the incentive of a
1,387,000 prize pool, why is it that people
decide to become
professional gamers?

ARCHIVAL FOOTAGE OF BOARD GAME ADVERTS STARTS.
KIM
Back before all this started, people just had simple video
games. These
days board games tend to be something of the
past, only dug out when
the family stays over Christmas.
However, in 2014 The Guardian found
that the board game
market has grown between 25% and 4-%
annually since
2010. So, board games could be on the rise. But the big
question
here is this: video games or board games?
VOX POP ASKING IF PEOPLE PREFER VIDEO GAMES OR BOARD
GAMES.
KIM
So, we have found that males are more likely to play video
games,
especially in competitions for money. In each
generation, video gaming is increasing in quality, and therefore
becoming more popular. But how far
will video gaming go in the
future? Will videogames become the new
footballs? Only time
will tell.
