Note for students: All Automotive students must select projects that are automotive related, and should be given priority to take these projects.
Note for staff: More projects could be offered by adding new rows at the bottom of the following table and in the same style.

Project Description - Between 50 and 100 words
description
This project will simulate using FEA modelling the surface
pressure experienced by a force sensitive resistor used as a
relative pressure sensor on the exterior of pipes. The
simulation work will also look at how leaks in the pipe affect
the measured pressure.
This project will develop a system to harvest thermal
energy from underground pipes. It will develop the system
to be attached to water pipes and to harvest energy from
the temperature difference between the pipe wall and the
surrounding ground. The system will be based around a
thermoelectric generator.

This project aims to produce a prototype array of coupled

mechanical oscillators using doorbell ringer type
mechanisms. The ringer is an autonomous impact oscillator
which makes&breaks a drive circuit to create an oscillating
electromagnetic force. Coupled arrays of oscillators result
in synchronisation and locking. The project will produce
simple coupled oscillator systems and investigate the
dynamics of the systems.

This project will investigate micro vacuum pumping

systems. Macro scale molecular pumps often work by
momentum transfer to the gas molecules from high speed
rotating vanes. At the micro scale this can be mimicked by
vibrating cantilevers. This project will develop a model
(using Matlab/Simulink) of the pumping of gas by a
vibrating cantilever.
This project will develop a strain sensor based on a flexible
silicone material that is engineered to have a crack in it,
the crack will be metallised with a thin layer of metal.
When the flexible material is stretched the crack opens up
reducing the number of metal contact points. This gives a
strain sensitive resistor that is of very low stiffness, ideal
for measuring the stain in soft materials, i.e. tyre rubber.
