Executive summary
Study Lab is a product designed with a specific purpose to enable students hone their
mathematics and science knowledge by providing a framework for thousands of curated practice
tasks with rich video based feedback.
This framework, which stands on the principle that practice makes perfect has been thoroughly
researched and reviewed by technologists and educationists. It is indeed is a pioneering effort for

the design of an effective learning companion that combines technology and education. As the
product is based on technology, a lot of thought has gone into the design with a view to easy
deployment, use and sustainability of requisite ICT infrastructure. Furthermore, we are confident
that the over-the-top value this product is providing will certainly encourage and promote the
adoption and use of ICT at the secondary school level- a movement, which is absolutely critical
for any educational environment seeking to produce astute scholars.
Dream World is companies with high innovative capital in the educational technology and
research information management space. We have innovate this product and its attendant
services to work with various stakeholders in government and private sector with the goal of
improving students knowledge of Mathematics and science to very high levels of competence.
1.0 The case for enhanced Mathematics performance
Annually, a host of international educational measurement organizations try to rank countries in
the world based on their students Maths and science competence. China has taken first position
in the last few years. Nigeria isnt even on the list. Of note is the fact that of all subjects a typical
secondary school student undertakes, the ones that form the basis for international ranking are
Maths, science and reading. The data we do have, though, that provides information on math
competence among O level students, come from the recent results WAEC and NECO have
released and they indicate that Maths skills have been on the decline. Education had always
meant to be a means to produce people who live on the cutting edge; people who are at the
forefront of innovation and never to produce people who sit tight in the spectators box.
1.1 Mathematics
Mathematics as we know is the basis for all science and technology. Mathematics has been
described as the physical world (nature) reduced to numbers. No wonder therefore, the ministry
of education has made Maths compulsory in secondary school and a credit in Mathematics, as a
pre-requisite for gaining a University Admission.
1.2 Science
Furthermore, according to research, good science skills have been linked to good technical
innovative skills and individuals with technical innovative skills have a positive impact on
productivity. When innovators reach a critical mass, it has a visible impact on the productivity of
a nation, India and China being cases in point.
Principles of Mathematics and Science have been around and taught for centuries but individuals
cannot make innovative use of them unless the knowledge becomes deeply ingrained. We would
argue therefore that unless a student gets to interact with Maths and Science in an environment
that challenges and tasks their knowledge but always provides feedback on their efforts, the
foundational knowledge and skills needed to engage higher education may not be fully formed.

2.1 The initiative
Learning is meant to be meaningful, memorable and motivational. It is only when these three
elements come together that learning can produce its intended outcome change in behaviour.
Over the years however, the teaching function has been beset by so many factors, some being
inadequate learning resources and unskilled /untrained teachers among others. Regardless of
these facts, the training and learning function must continue, and not just continue but maintain a
high standard so that we can ensure progress, peace and prosperity for coming generations.
In continuation of the above thoughts, one of the essential methods for science learning is the
need to interact and practice again and again with problems, and their solutions and alternative
solutions. While, improved funding and teacher (re)training can solve the problems of poor
classroom resources and poor teaching skills, to successfully expose students to myriads of
dynamic problems that they have to interact with to hone their skills is best deployed as an
eLearning framework
It is with this mindset that we decided to harness existing theories in pedagogy and innovated a
framework that uses practice problems, to improve students competence. This design follows
the problem-based learning method for teaching and students therefore, have profound learning
experiences by practicing with rich feedback.
This framework also improves student to student, student to teacher, teacher to teacher, student to
resource, teacher to resource, and community to resource interactivity thereby creating a truly
dynamic, blended learning environment. We do not believe that technology should replace
classroom learning as some other pundits posit but that technology should assist classroom
teachers to improve all-round teaching and learning.
2.2 The Product
Study Lab (Math 1.0) is software that packages over 2,500 practice problems in Mathematics for
SS1, SS2 and SS3 students. Each question has its own video based feedback, which the user can
watch after attempting a typical question. Users will use the embedded videos and handwritten
solutions to correct themselves and fill their knowledge gaps in the process.
Teachers who have provided the recorded solutions are experienced teachers and examiners.
Furthermore, Professor P.N Lassa a leading Maths educationist in Nigeria sits on our board and
provides consulting services to ensure that the products are pedagogically sound. An experienced
instructional designer has worked with the teachers to produce the learning assets.
This pioneering version of Study Lab Math (V1.0) was produced for exam preparation classes.
Similarly, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English, Accounting and Economics (v1.0) are being
developed and each subject has a different pedagogical design, which suits its learning aims and
objectives.
Furthermore, we are developing algorithms to decipher to very minute details, learning gaps that
students may have and present reports to teachers and wards. All these features and updates will
come in rapid succession as we push our goal of getting Nigeria on the map of countries with the
most brilliant Math and science students. Study lab initiative has a feedback mechanism that
allows us to get feedback with respect to how the software is being used and how the videos are
understood. This helps us to continually improve the services we offer to users

3.1Channel 1
In this channel, the StudyLab software is packaged as a portable application in a USB flash
drive. One flash drive contains one subject and can be used on any computer without the need to
install. This is best for cases where students are more likely to have access to a computer outside
school premises.
