Rape Crimes in Prison

Introduction/Background
She lays sprawled out across her bed in her cell sobbing silently, so she does not draw
attention to herself. One of the inmates comes in to comfort her from her pain. What did he do

Commented [LC1]: Overall, this paper was really good. I

enjoyed it and it is obvious you took time to make sure you
did it right. You need to make sure it is the correct length
and has all the necessary sections.
-Megan
Commented [LC2]: I really enjoyed how your introduction
made me picture what was happening. It really pulled me in
as a reader. The imagery in this paragraph was great. Great
job.

to you? she asked her. She just sits there with blank stare on her face in silence. Her fellow
inmate begins making inappropriate gestures towards her, You like when I take advantage of
you, like this dont you? she says. Youre going to do whatever I ask you to do. She is telling
her to stop, and starts getting emotional again. Her friend grabs her and hold her tight making her
feel better. A couple minutes pass, and she just starts to vent about what happened. We were
doing duty, you know riding around just enjoying the time we had to spend together. We stopped
by the doughnut shop and get his favorite, chocolate glazed with rainbow sprinkles. While we
drove I would glance into his eyes every now and then, he always made me feel safe when I as
with him. There was a pond near the prison, so we stopped to feed the ducks before returning. He
sat down in the back of the van and put me on his lap as her kissed me, making butterflies rush
through my body. He slowly laid me down in the back of the van kissing my body passionately,
making all my worries go away, but I was not ready for this, I wanted him to stop, I wanted to
say no, but I didnt want him to be upset with me. He starts to take of my clothes, I rose up and
told him to stop. Stop? I thought you liked me. He said with a sparkle in his eye. I do like
you, I just dont think I am ready for this yet. I responded. I saw rage take over his body, and
his face got bloodshot red. He grabbed me and turned me on my stomach, pulling down my
uniform. I told him to stop, I promise I did, I wasnt ready. He pinned me down and I couldnt
move. He had his way with me and when it was all over, He claimed it was out of love, and I

how descriptive this section of the introduction is. It gave
me a well rounded understanding and hooked me instantly.

believed him. The other inmate had a look of disgust, and an uneasy stomach. You need to tell
somebody, you know it wasnt right. I cant, and we both know why.
The only problem with this is, inmates are sexually, mentally, and emotionally abused every
day in prisons. This is a topic that is never publically discussed in the world, and yet never
brought to anyones attention when it should be. Most victims of rape feel like it is their fault,
and in prison nobody would take the time of day to listen to an inmate tell the story of how they
were abused by one of the prison officers. In todays society, rape in general is a very touchy
subject to handle let alone speak about it. People are raped every second of everyday and nobody
would know. Many people dont have an outlet or somebody they can go to for help, and most of
all they are scared. In most cases people think of rape as male on female. In all actuality it can be
any gender being the attacker. Also, the way the system is set up today, if there is no direct proof
of the crime happening it is just your word against theirs, which in my opinion is not fair.
In prison, there is no sympathy for inmates, just because they are criminals does not mean
they have no feelings. Just because they are in prison they are still human and should be treated

Commented [LC4]: The wording in this sentence is sort of

strange. I would recommend changing it to something like
"People are raped every second of every day and most of
the time nobody even knows it happened." The way it is
currently worded could confuse a reader.
-Baylee
Commented [LC5]: These following sentences make your
opinion and your stance very strong. Maybe you could
express how you feel a little bit more and give some
evidence to back up how you feel before going into your lit.
review. This will help give some more length to your paper.
I'm glad you didn't only defend one gender. You showed it
was an all gender problem.

as such. The officers in prison, look at inmates as animals that do not deserve respect, most
officers use the inmates for sex in trade for contraband, which is still illegal. In this paper I will
go into detail on the penalties officers receive for inappropriate relationships with inmates, how
these situations are handled publicly, and more general information on sexual assault on its own.
Lit. Review
New statistics by the U.S. Department of Justice show an increase in sexual abuse of
prisoners by prison staff. Perhaps more surprisingly, the study finds that sexual misconduct by
female employees of the prison system is happening at a disproportionate rate. (Martin 2009,

Commented [LC6]: I enjoyed reading these statistics.

They really helped me grasp how serious this topic really is. I
did not realize how bad this was until now

par.1). In most movies and popular imagination this issue is played as a joke but it is not a
laughing matter. A report from the Justice Departments very own inspector general says that the
sexual abuse of staff on inmates rose from 2001 to 2008. In this report it also includes that
women make of 27 percent of federal prison officers thats account for about a third of these
allegations. The Bureau of Prisons operates 115 prisons in 93 different locations. The case of
abuse has risen in all of these prison over the time span of seven years (Martin 2009).
Martin(2009) and Dumond(2003) both agree that the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003
helped authorities renew their efforts to fight these assaults. Prisoner sexual assault has plagued
American corrections since its infancy in the 19th century. Although the incidence of prisoner

sexual assault is unknown, recent studies reliably suggest the problem is widespread, often
affecting the most vulnerable prisoners. The mental health and public health consequences, both
within institutions and the community, are complex and devastating, requiring comprehensive
intervention and treatment. (Dumond 2003, p.1). While these crimes have been largely ignored
by correctional officers is compromising the safety of the correctional facilities (Dumond 2003).
Two women are suing a prison in Rikers Island and the city of New York who claimed they
were raped by an officer with the consent of the city. This case involves serial rapes by eight
officers one where two women were raped in the janitors closet and one got pregnant. The suit
says that both incidents were reported but there was never anything done about these ongoing
allegations. The officers actions were open but none of the other officers decided to speak on it
(Shortell 2015).
Entering The Conversation

Commented [LC8]: Maybe not in this particular section,

but can you describe from stories how rape makes a person
feel? With this topic you can get on much more of an
emotional level with readers. I would tell them throughout
the page on how you feel about the subject. Bring it more
close to home with experiences either you or someone
close to you have had.
-Megan
Commented [LC9]: Be sure to finish your paper. It is hard
to tell what you are contributing t this research. For
example, add the entering the conversation part that way
the reader can tell what is "new" and get a better
understanding of this paper.

There is plenty new information to be brought to this topic of conversation. I will be

conducting a research experiment. I will be doing a survey of random individual and getting their
opinions on their outlook on rape. Not just in prisons, but everywhere in the world. I will be
getting opinions on how people personally feel about rape crimes. Male on male, female on
male, male on female, and female on female. I think most people will always say that male on
female rape crimes are the worst because the masculinity of ales and how weak people perceive
females as. The one people might things is the least bad would be female on female because
people thing of females as soft or weak individuals. To me, all of them are bad because rape is
rape, no matter who it gets done to. Another thing I would ask if how people feel about the
officers in jails sexually victimizing the inmates just because they are criminals. Some people
may have conflicting opinions on this subject but, it is very obvious that any kind of rape is
wrong. Also I feel like in female prisons, there should be only female guards, it may not
completely stop the problem but, it can decrease it slightly. This is what I will be bringing to the
conversation.
Conclusion
In conclusion, this paper explained the ins and outs of rape and rape crimes in the United
States especially in the state penitentiary. Rape is a crime in the United States is a very sensitive
subject that is not really spoken about. It is something that is ignored now in todays society.
Rape in prisons have risen in the past seven years, between 2001 and 2008. This is a serious
issue in the United States and should not be ignored. Df j ss aa ff fff ff tt tt tt tt tt tt tt tt tt tt tt tt tt

Commented [LC10]: These citations are very well done.

They show how reliable your paper is and that your citations
aren't crap. It also shows how much work you put in on
making it well rounded.
-Megan
Commented [LC11]: This should say "Citations" or
"Works Cited." The readers need to know that this is your
works cited section of the paper. If the reader does not
know then it could be plagiarism. I recommend changing
this.
