Extravagant Love, Extravagant Generosity

By John and Marianne Beverstein

By Cynthia and Andrew Beverley

God has blessed us through his bountiful gifts

in many ways. We feel it is our obligation
to give back a tithe to strengthen that
relationship. Prior to our being able to tithe,
we always thought it was important to give
back in other methods, by giving our time
and talents as we were able. One of the ways
John has given back was through facilitating
Dave Ramseys Financial Peace University
at Missouri UMC. The first line on that budget
form is the Giving category, and 10% is the
recommended amount.

The church teaches that all good things come

from God. We recognize this fully and believe
Gods generosity is undeserved. As children
growing up in nurturing congregations, we
learned that the way to show our gratitude was
to try to act in ways that would please God.
As teens, our church leaders encouraged us to
strive to be reflections of Gods grace and love.
While these might seem like heavy messages for
children, they helped to give our young lives
meaning and direction.

Giving back is so very important to both of us

and our family. Both of our daughters have
been recipients of the generosity of others
through several scholarships while in college.
One of them was from our Missouri UMC
Foundation! They, in turn, have given back
through volunteering their time and talents to
their schools and other organizations including
Volunteers in Mission through the Methodist
Church. They also plan to give back monetarily
as their careers develop.
We always try to do as much as we are able to
help others through our giving to our church
and other charitable organizations. Some
people might equate giving as a sacrifice, but
that is not how we view it. Giving is an act of
love, that hopefully enriches the lives of others
and the life of Missouri UMC. We ask you to
please join us in this act of faith as we move
forward in our service to God and our church.

Over the years, we have tried to live this way,

sometimes more intentionally than others and
always with inconsistent results. Nonetheless,
we know that for us, the best chance we have
of living lives worthy of Gods gifts is through
continued exposure to the teachings of Christ
and the modeling of those teachings that we
receive from the church. Our financial gifts
help sustain and move forward the work of our
local congregation, and to be sure, the good
works of MUMC are mighty and widespread.
We are charged to help bring about Christs
kingdom on earth, and here in Columbia, part
of our response to that charge is to financially
support MUMC. We do so out of gratitude and
with thanksgiving, knowing that while God does
not need us to accomplish his work, we need
God to give meaning to ours.

In Worship on Nov. 22

MUMC will be celebrating Organ and Tissue Donation

Sabbath on Nov. 22. This day is celebrated by the United
Methodist Church in order to educate members about the
life-giving benefits of organ donation. Please stop by the
Caring Committees table in the connector during that
morning to learn more about this ministry to others.

Week of November 9 November 14

Read or subscribe to the full weekly Growing Deeply Guide at moumc.org/grow

Printed copies are available at the Connector Desk.

SATURDAY: Matthew 22:37-39 All of me

REFLECTION: Gods commandment to love is holistic, requiring heart,
soul, mind and strength we might even say its emotional, spiritual,
mental and physical.
PRAYER: All of me, Lord. I love you with all of me.

FRIDAY: Matthew 22:37-39 How to love

REFLECTION: Consider the ways in which you show that you love God.
PRAYER: As we enter this time of generosity and consecration, move me
to show you my love through my giving.

THURSDAY: Deuteronomy 6:1-9 The great commandment

REFLECTION: Remember the great commandment that Jesus speaks of in
Matthew was already a tenet of Jewish faith from the Old Testament.
ACTION: Write out verse 5 today on your body, on a sheet of paper, in
a book, on your smartphone, etc.

WEDNESDAY: Galatians 5:16-23a, 25 Freedom and fruit

REFLECTION: Living free of the flesh allows us to make room for Gods
spirit to live, move and grow in us. Let some stuff go! In our culture, it
is hard to give in and flow in the Spirit because we value controlling our
present and future so much.
PRAYER: I cant do it all, Lord. I loosen the reins on my life so that you
can flow in and through me.

TUESDAY: Galatians 5:16-23a, 25 Spirit led

REFLECTION: Review UMH No. 382 Have Thine Own Way, Lord
PRAYER: Fill with thy spirit till all shall see Christ only, always, living in
me! (v. 4)

MONDAY: Galatians 5:16-23a, 25 Eat your fruit

REFLECTION: Do you have a fruit that you dont like to eat? I dont care
for raspberries, for example. When you look at the spiritual fruits in this
reading, to which one(s) do you say, Eh, Id rather not? Why do you
think you feel that way?
PRAYER: Make me spiritually healthy as I choose to eat (live out) the
spiritual fruit.

Growing Deeply

My Notes:

Read or subscribe to the full weekly

Growing Deeply Guide at moumc.org/grow
Printed copies are available at the Connector Desk.

My counsel is this: Live freely, animated and motivated by Gods Spirit. Then
you wont feed the compulsions of selfishness. For there is a root of sinful
self-interest in us that is at odds with a free spirit, just as the free spirit is
incompatible with selfishness. These two ways of life are antithetical, so
that you cannot live at times one way and at times another way according
to how you feel on any given day. Why dont you choose to be led by the
Spirit and so escape the erratic compulsions of a law-dominated existence?
It is obvious what kind of life develops out of trying to get your own way all
the time: repetitive, loveless, cheap sex; a stinking accumulation of mental
and emotional garbage; frenzied and joyless grabs for happiness; trinket
gods; magic-show religion; paranoid loneliness; cutthroat competition; allconsuming-yet-never-satisfied wants; a brutal temper; an impotence to love or
be loved; divided homes and divided lives; small-minded and lopsided pursuits;
the vicious habit of depersonalizing everyone into a rival; uncontrolled and
uncontrollable addictions; ugly parodies of community. I could go on. This
isnt the first time I have warned you, you know. If you use your freedom this
way, you will not inherit Gods kingdom. But what happens when we live Gods
way? He brings gifts into our lives, much the same way that fruit appears in an
orchardthings like affection for others, exuberance about life, serenity. We
develop a willingness to stick with things, a sense of compassion in the heart,
and a conviction that a basic holiness permeates things and people. We find
ourselves involved in loyal commitments, not needing to force our way in life,
able to marshal and direct our energies wisely...Since this is the kind of life
we have chosen, the life of the Spirit, let us make sure that we do not just
hold it as an idea in our heads or a sentiment in our hearts, but work out its
implications in every detail of our lives.

Nov. 22: Open Door Movie Night

Open Door Ministry is hosting an afternoon at the movies on Sunday, Nov. 22 at 2

p.m. as we watch for the BIBLE tells me so, a film by Daniel Karslake.
This multi-award-winning film is a provocative, entertaining documentary that
brilliantly reconciles homosexuality and Biblical scripture, and in the process
reveals that Church-sanctioned anti-gay bias is based almost solely upon a
significant (and often malicious) misinterpretation of the Bible. Please let us know
that you will be joining us at 573-443-3111 or email jo@moumc.org. Childcare
available by reservation.

Nov. 19-20: A Night at the Shelter

First Baptist Church (1112 E. Broadway near Stephens
College) Thursday, Nov. 19 and Friday, Nov. 20 at 7
p.m. Directed by Caryl Bryan and Nora Dietzel and
written by University of Missouri political science
professor David Webber, a RATI volunteer, the play
portrays the homeless experience in Columbia. There
will be a reception following the performance.
