Shaft coupling, installation and maintenance

General
In order to achieve a proper connection between the motor and the driven shaft, it is
important that the shaft coupling is correctly maintained and tightened. By following
the steps below, a correct function of the coupling is ensured.
The material and dimensions of the driven shaft has to be in accordance with the
information given in the "Installation and Maintenance Manual Section 3, Marathon".
When tightening the coupling it is very important that the screws are tightened to the
specified torque, see the sign on the coupling. Use a calibrated torque wrench.
Maintenance
The couplings are from the factory lubricated with MoS2 (Molycote) on the conical
surfaces, bolt threads and under the bolt heads. See figure 1. If the coupling has
been stored during a longer period or at reassembling, the coupling shall be relubricated according to the instructions given below.
When handling the coupling, take care not to damage the working surfaces.
1. Place the coupling on a flat surface with the screw heads pointing up.
2. Remove the screws. The screws must be replaced if they shows signs of having
been over tightened, e. g. prolonged.
3. Dismantle the coupling by lifting the upper clamping ring and the coupling ring.
4. Clean the tapered surfaces on the clamping rings and all surfaces on the coupling
ring by using a solvent. Inspect the working surfaces for scoring and or dent mark
damages, and consult Hgglunds representative if there are any doubts if the
coupling can be reused.
5. Before reassembling, lubricate the tapered surfaces on the clamping rings and all
surfaces on the coupling ring, see figure 1. The screws must also be lubricated
(threads and contact areas of the screw heads and washers). Use Molycote G
rapid.
6. Reassemble the coupling in reverse order. Make sure that the o-ring is in correct
position.

7. Do not tighten the screws before the coupling is mounted on the motors
hollow shaft. To make mounting easier, put spacers in between the two clamping
rings.
Molycote must under no circumstances be transferred to the surfaces between
the driven shaft and the motor. It is therefore important that you clean your
hands if they are contaminated by Molycote.

Figure 1. Lubricate the surfaces at the dashed line.

Mounting and tightening

1.

Clean the outer diameter of the hollow shaft and lubricate the same surface. Use
Molycote G rapid.

2.

Mount the coupling onto the hollow shaft of the motor. The coupling must be
pushed right to the stop.

3.

Remove the spacers between the clamping rings. Adjust the clamping rings by
lightly tightening the screws by hand so the difference in the gap is less than 1
mm on the circumference. See figure 2. Measure in several places. Do not
tighten the screws before the motor is mounted on the shaft. It shall be possible
to turn the coupling by hand.

Figure 2. The gap of the clamping rings shall not differ more than 1 mm.

4.

Lift the motor and make sure that the hollow shaft is in level. Use a magnetic
level.

5.

Clean the driven shaft and the inside of the Marathon motor hollow shaft. Use
acetone, thinner or similar solvents.

6.

Lift and align the motor to the driven shaft see Installation Manual section 3.

7.

Mount the mounting tool according to "Installation and Maintenance Manual,

Marathon".

8.

Pull the motor onto the shaft by turning the nut on the mounting tool until the
length stated in the "Installation and Maintenance Manual, Marathon" is obtained.
To avoid the motor jamming on the shaft, move the torque arm slightly forward
and backwards.

9.

Let the lifting equipment follow the motor axially, small adjustments.

10. Use a torque wrench and tighten the bolts in position 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock to
100 Nm. Measure the gap between the clamping rings, the difference shall not
be more than 1 mm. Adjust If necessary.
11. Mark the screw at 12 o'clock and tighten the other screws by hand.
12. Start at the mark and tighten the screws in a turning sequence to preset torque.
Measure the gap of the clamping rings after every turn, adjust if the difference is
more than 1 mm. After 3-5 turn, increase the torque by 100 Nm.

13. Continue the tightening and increase the torque gradually by 100 Nm until the
specified torque has been reached. Make sure that the gap of the clamping rings
never differs more than 1 mm.
14. The lifting equipment can be removed when 50% of the full torque has been
reached.
15. When full torque has been reached, continue tighten the screws to specified
torque until no further movements of the screw can be observed.
When the coupling is fully torqued up the distance between the two clamping
rings is about 5 to 8 mm. However, this indication can never be used as a
substitute to verify proper tightening.
16. Remove the mounting tool and mount plug, when applicable, and end cover.
Removal
For dismantling, the screws should be released clockwise in several stages to avoid
tilting of the clamping rings. Appropriate is to open the screws by one third of a turn
on each occasion.
Under no circumstances should the screws be taken out of the thread, as due to the
pretension the clamping rings could jump apart.
