This is an Official Planning objection to the Construction of the New Children's Hospital at the St
James Hospital Site. As the Parent of Child with Special needs my family travels from Galway several
times a year to attend very important consultant appointments and surgical procedures. These have
been very stressful times for us as we have a child that is prone to ongoing seizures along with a lot
of other issues in his life. A smooth, predictable journey is vital for us and like the vast majority of
kids with special needs routine is essential.
Whilst the design of the hospital building itself is mostly acceptable the location on no level is going
to help those who will be using the hospital as patients, which is the main reason for building the
facility to begin with. It will make their lives even more difficult than they already are due the
inevitable traffic issues that will be faced as a result. Timing a journey with all it components like
feeding and hygiene requirements of a child is essential for their well being and stress. Additional
stress of the inevitable traffic Chaos at this site will make life only worse.
In addition to the Traffic Chaos that the location will cause, if for some bizarre reason it is actually
built, the construction phase itself will send the area into an even bigger mess that it is already in
without even a shovel going into the ground.
Being in a city centre location as well means that family's will have the added worry of being
subjected to the high level of street crime and drug use that Dublin city centre is currently over run
with. I speak from experience from being attacked myself whilst going to the shop from Temple
streets Children's hospital at Christmas.
The Design of putting a Helicopter pad on the edge of the building within a stone's throw of the
surrounding residential area is beyond belief. Airlines themselves purposely design flight paths to
avoid flying over built up areas at all possible costs. Building this hospital in a city centre means that
the helicopter ( which they are promoting lots of usage of to answer the question of dealing with
heavy traffic issues) will be trying to land on the edge of a building filled with sick children, great
medical minds and surrounded by hard working residents of the area. This is beyond ludicrous. In
Galway this is currently an issue with damage to roofs of the surrounding houses at UCHG being
caused by the down forces from the helicopters landing.
The site itself is a Hornets nest of a location to begin with. While plans may be plans, the amount of
existing services that will need to be interrupted is enormous. The potential for disaster is at a very
high level even before the project may even start. In addition the true requirements for expansion
have not been addressed for the future generations. This building alone is being squeezed on to this
site
From a planning prospective budgeting is another issue, so it would be pointless highlighting the
efficiency of building a similar project on an available Green field site. I would think this is already
blatantly obvious to you, but building this project in this loqabofl~9m9atal9~~~ a orld
class bus shelter on the top of the Dublin mountains. Whil1 i\{R~ function it ~ld b in cp
the wrong location and would be a nightmare to build.

As Planners you yourselves are taxpaying members of this country. I have no doubt that you know
your jobs and have guidelines to consider when looking at this Project application. All that is asked of
you is that those guidelines be followed as you would with any other project and you will see that
the location of this project fails on so many levels. A very small Minority are pushing for this project
to be built here as they are at a point of no return. It is to be the biggest publically funded project to
ever take place in this country and if it's built in this location the full potential of the taxpayer's
money will be not put to use.
Yours Sincerely
Keith Kissane.
