Experiment No.1
OBJECTIVE
The objective of this practice is to carry out an open loop control for
flow using an AVS-I solenoid valve.

Apparatus:

UCP-F
Control and Acquisition Software
Water

Procedure:

Connect the interface of the equipment and the control software

Select the open loop control 1 option
Click the start button, and start the pump
Now manually move the AVS-1 bar to control the flow through the valve in
to the container

Centrifugal pumps
The types of hydraulic machines which have the capability to convert mechanical
energy into hydraulic energy are called pumps and centrifugal pump is a type of
pump which uses centrifugal action to perform this job.
Main parts of centrifugal pumps are following

Impeller

Casing

Suction pipe along with foot valve and strainer

Delivery pipe

Open loop gain

An open-loop control system is controlled directly, and only, by an input signal.
The basic units of this type consist only of an amplifier and a motor.
The amplifier receives a low-level input signal and amplifies it enough to drive
the motor to perform the desired job.
The open-loop control system is shown in basic block diagram form. With this
system, the input is a signal that is fed to the amplifier. The output of
the amplifier is proportional to the amplitude of the input signal.
The phase (ac system) and polarity (dc system) of the input signal determines
the direction that the motor shaft will turn. After amplification, the input signal is
fed to the motor, which moves the output shaft (load) in the direction that
corresponds with the input signal.

The motor will not stop driving the output shaft until the input signal is reduced
to zero or removed. This system usually requires an operator who controls speed
and direction of movement of the output by varying the input. The operator
could be controlling the input by either a mechanical or an electrical linkage

Solenoid valve
A solenoid valve is an electromechanical device used for controlling liquid or gas
flow. The solenid valve is controlled by electrical current, which is run through a
coil. When the coil is energized, a magnetic field is created, causing a plunger
inside the coil to move. Depending on the design of the valve, the plunger will
either open or close the valve. When electrical current is removed from the coil,
the valve will return to its de-energized state
In direct-acting solenoid valves, the plunger directly opens and closes an orifice
inside the valve. In pilot-operated valves (also called the servo-type), the plunger
opens and closes a pilot orifice. The inlet line pressure, which is led through the
pilot orifice, opens and closes the valve seal.
The most common solenoid valve has two ports: an inlet port and an outlet port.
Advanced designs may have three or more ports. Some designs utilize a
manifold-type design.
Solenoid valves make automation of fluid and gas control possible. Modern
solenoid valves offer fast operation, high reliability, long service life, and
compact design.

Comments
This experiment develops the open-loop dynamic models between tank level and pump speed
from step response data and also to demonstrate the typical functions of SCADA
(Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems using a PC interfaced to the Honeywell
UDC3300 controller.
