density and the flexibility necessary for

deployment in a range of Indoor and
Outdoor environments through the use
of a rugged and temperature controlled
Enclosure.
Key features of the UBS are:
High performance, efficiency and
carrier density
Distributed architecture support
IP backhaul via T1/E1 or Ethernet
Minimum space requirements and
deployment times
High efficiency power amplifier
technology
Support for CDMA and LTE
technology architectures.

Overview
The renowned Universal Base Station
(UBS) builds on the successful
SuperCell platform. The UBS
provides communications service
providers (CSPs) with a highly
scalable, flexible and reliable solution,
which meets the demands of todays
CDMA network requirements while
providing a migration path to LTE. The
UBS provides scalability, high carrier

The UBS hardware and associated

software provides a portfolio of
products with mid- to high-carrier
capacity that support multi-mode
CDMA in a single frame at either
800MHz or 1.9GHz. The High Capacity
800MHz and 1.9GHz versions of
UBS deliver 20 / 16W per sector
respectively, for a carrier capacity up to
9 carriers in a 3-sector configuration.
The UBS frame is comprised of the
Power Distribution Subsystem,
Integrated Digital Module (DMI) that
contains the modems, Site and Span
Interface (SSI) and Integrated
Transceiver Module (XMI), which in
turn contains the transceivers and
power amplifiers, Integrated Duplexer
and Receive Filters (IDRF) as well as
optional combiners and splitters.

Benefits
Evolution with Investment
Protection
The UBS platform offers cost-effective
network growth options while
preserving capital investments in
existing network infrastructure. The
highly flexible architecture of the UBS
platform creates a high degree of
future readiness for the CSP. CSPs
May add/replace modules and upgrade
software that permits migration using
existing assets and available spectrum.
The UBS provides a smooth evolution
path from CDMA to LTE, enabling the
delivery of new capabilities and/or
services while leveraging existing
network investments.
Simple, Flexible and Scalable
The UBS is designed with ease of
installation, configuration, Operation &
Maintenance and expansion in mind.
The UBS offers flexible growth options
and provides pay as you grow
opportunities through its modular
design, condensed footprint and indoor
and outdoor deployment capabilities.
Comprehensive Operations &
Maintenance procedures allow for
easy configuration and reduced
manual intervention. With the high
level of flexibility, scalability and ease
of upgrade, the UBS enables easy
deployment of new capabilities
necessary to meet changing market
needs.

Reduced Operational Expenses

The UBS platform creates opportunities
for CSPs to realize a reduced total cost
of ownership. Its innovative design
reduces real-estate requirements and
allows for simple interconnections
between components. The platform
supports remote carrier activation and
capacity upgrades reducing truck rolls/
site visits, as well as shared power
across sectors and carriers that delivers
power to the sector-carrier(s) that most
need it. The use of On-Demand Power
Amplification permits improved Power
Amplifier efficiency thereby reducing
OPEX. Additionally, the condensed
frame footprint helps ease installation
and reduce maintenance costs while
improving system reliability.

The UBS Outdoor

Environmental Enclosure
The Environmental Enclosure provides
physical protection and a stable
environment in which the Indoor UBS
can operate when deployed outdoors;
the RF performance of the UBS is
unaffected. The enclosure consists

of a rugged physical enclosure, a

Direct Air Circulation system, AC
rectification to provide DC power and
an optional battery power back-up
system providing up to 8 hours backup. The Enclosure also supports 4U of
customer equipment up to 400 Watts
power consumption.
