SECTION I
GENERAL DESCRIPTION

\.......-.

1.1

GENERAL

Selective and Wideband Voltmeter 476J-1 is a highly

sensitive, selective test instrument which measures
the voltage level of each frequency component of
complex wave forms in the 4 to 750 kc range. As a
selective voltmeter it is used either in the laboratory
or in the field for several types of measurements:
(1) harmonic distortion, (2) intermodulation products,
(3) crosstalk, (4) attenuation, and (5) modulation
characteristics tests, relative to electrical filters,
cables, or open-wire lines. The frequencies of a
complex wave form are also indicated. As a wideband electronic voltmeter the 476J-1 measures the
rms voltage level of a single or composite signal or
noise in the 200 cps to 750 kc range.

1.2

EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION

The 476J-1 consists of four major circuits: (1) an

r-f amplifier with an input matching network and a
low pass filter, (2) an 800 kc i -f circuit, (3) a 15 kc
i-f circuit, and (4) a metered output circuit. See
figure 1-3.
The 476J-1 is a single unit which can be either rackmounted on standard 19-inch racks or used on a
bench. It is fitted with removable safety covers and
two carrying handles. A reinforced wooden carrying
case is available for transporting the unit. See
figure 1-2.
Standard construction techniques are used on internal
wiring with small parts accessible on composition
terminal boards. Critical circuits are enclosed in
metal containers which have removable covers.
Tubes are held in place by spring loaded holders.
The tuning condensor is ruggedized, vernier-driven,
and directly calibrated with the tuning dial. The dial
is illuminated with two 6.3 volt pilot lamps.

III, OPERATION, for the initial adjustments and
calibration of the unit. If these procedures indicate
equipment malfunction, follow the maintenance procedures outlined in paragraph 5. 4, Section V.

SECTION III
OPERATION
3.1

GENERAL

The following paragraphs outline the procedures for

calibrating the 476J -1 and making specific measurements. Refer to figure 3-1 and paragraph 3. 2 for
identification of controls.

3.2

CONTROLS

Test adjustments are made from the front of the unit.

Silk screened labels identify the controls and the
values of each switch position. There are five rotary,
ganged wafer switches: three potentiometers, and
two variable capacitors:
a. INPUT IMPEDANCE switch S101, a doublepole, 9-position 3-wafer rotary switch, which varies
the input impedance.
b. INPUT attenuation switch S102, a double-pole
10-position, rotary switch, which switches in
L-pad attenuators to attenuate the signal.

g. CAL 1 potentiometer R180, located below the

meter, which varies the output of the 50 kc oscillator.
h. CAL 2 potentiometer R156, located just to the
right of CAL 1, which calibrates the amplifier sections used in the selective voltmeter application.
i. Vernier-driven variable capacitor C131 MAIN
TUNING knob, located near the dial, which is a
broad-tuning control.

j. DIAL CAL trimmer capacitor C132, pointer

knob, located to the right of the MAIN TUNING control, which is used for calibrating the dial to exact
frequencies.

3.3

CALIBRA1'ION

Follow the steps below in the proper sequence before

attempting voltage measurements.
a. Connect the line cord to an a-c receptacle and
turn the toggle switch on the front panel to the ON
position. Allow the unit five minutes for stabilization.

c. FREQ RANGE switch S103, a double-pole, 6position rotary switch, which selects the correct LC
combination for the selected frequency range.
d. SELECTIVE VOLTMETER RANGE switch
S104, a single-pole, 8-position, rotary switch, which
switches in series resistance.
e. Function selector switch S105, a double-pole,
6-position, 3-wafer rotary switch which selects the
mode of operation.

Transformer primary voltage selector

on rear of chassis must be in proper
position to match a-c source voltage.
b. Turn function selector switch S105 to the CAL
1 position.
c. Adjust CAl, 1 Potentiometer R180 for an indication of 0 db as shown by meter M101.

f. ADJ INPUT potentiometer, R109, located on

the upper left corner, which varies the input impedance.
5

Section 111
Operation

d. Set INPUT switch S102, SELECTIVE VOLTMETER RANGE switch S104, and function selector
switch ~105 to 'the CAL 2 position.
e. Turn FREQ RANGE switch S103 to the 4-60
position and the tuning dial to the 50 kc position.
f. Adjust the DIAL CAL control C132 until the
meter indicates maximum deflection.

g. Reset the dial to the appropriate test frequency

and the switches to the test positions, as specified in
the following paragraphs.
The instrument is now calibrated for normal measurements. If a more accurate frequency calibration
is necessary:
a. Connect a headset to jack J101 marked
PHONES.
b. Reset function selector switch S105 to the 50
KC XTAL position.
c. Set the dial to the red mark nearest the test
frequency.
d. Adjust DIAL CAL control C132 until a zero
beat is heard in the headset.
e. Reset the dial to the test frequency and set
function selector switch S105 to the SEL VM position.

3.4

VTVM MEASUREMENTS
(WIDEBAND)

The 476J -1 measures single or composite signal

rms voltage levels or voltage ratios (in db) over the
200 cps to 750 kc spectrum when switch S105 is set
in the VTVM position. The measurements can be
made on either balanced or unbalanced two-conductor
circuits.

NOTE
Compare the output impedance of the
circuit under test with the value indicated
by INPUT IMPEDANCE switch S101. The
two values should be the same. For very
low level measurements, the input leads
should be kept as short as possible.
Check all ground connections carefully.

3.4.1 RMS LEVELS. Follow the steps below when

making vtvm measurements.
a.
3.3.

Calibrate the meter as instructed in paragraph

b. Set INPUT IMPEDANCE switch S101 to the

correct position to match the circuit under test.
c. Set INPUT switch S102 to the XI0 scale and
function selector switch S105 to the VTVM position.
d. Connect the circuit being tested to input terminals E101 and E102 with the center conductor or ungrounded lead attached to terminal E101.
e. Adjust INPUT switch S102 for an on-scale
meter indication, and record the indicated voltage
(rms) .
3.4.2 VOLTAGE RATIOS. When comparing the
voltage ratios of two or more signals in succession:
a. Set INPUT IMPEDANCE switch S101 to the
0-5K position and function selector switch S105 to
the VTVM position.
This operation fixes the input resistance of the unit
at 5,000 ohms (non-inductive) and provides a means
of calibrating meter MI01 to accurately measure
voltage ratios of different input levels.
b. Apply the signal which has the highest level
of the signals being tested to terminals E101 and
E102.
c. Set INPUT switch S102 to the 0 db position and
turn ADJ INPUT control R109 for a meter MI01 indication of 0 db (0. 775 v).
d. Remove the reference voltage (step b) and
individually measure the remaining levels on the
test circuit. INPUT switch S102 can be adjusted to
maintain on-scale meter readings as necessary.
To compute the level indicated by the instrument:
a.

Record the meter indication in db.

b. Note the position of INPUT switch S102 and

SELECTIVE VOLTMETER RANGE switch S104.

SELECTIVE VOLTMETER
MEASUREMENTS

d. Set INPUT switch S102 to the +20 db position

and SELECTIVE VOLTMETER RANGE switch S104
to the 0 db position.

The 476J-l measures harmonic distortion, intermodulation products, crosstalk, attenuation, and modulation characteristics when used in the selective
voltmeter application. The following paragraphs
describe these measurements. Calibrate the meter
as instructed in paragraph 3.3 and perform the
measurements in paragraph 3.4.1, a to e, before
attempting selective voltmeter measurements. The
latter ensures that input levels will not overload the
instrument. The instrument has a very narrow bandpass of approximately 200 kc. When making measurements in the SEL VM position, rotate the tuning
dial slowly to ensure measurement of all signals.
Adjust SELECTIVE VOLTMETER RANGE switch
S104 to the -60 db range to measure very low level
signals. Possible errors in measurement can occur
when other spurious frequencies in the vicinity of
1604 to 2350 kc are present. This situation can occur
when image signals differ in level by less than 30 db.
A low-pass filter can be used at the input terminals
to attenuate the spurious frequencies.

e. Increase the signal generator output for a full

scale deflection. Record the level.
f. Tune the voltmeter to the second, third,
fourth, ... n harmonics, and record the level of each.

The total harmonic distortion is obtained from the

following formula:

and frequency, thus locating the origin of the undesirable frequency components. Measurements are
limited on the upper limits by the 476J-l internal
noise voltage, which is approximately 1 microvolt.

3.5. 2 INTERMODULATION MEASUREMENTS. Perform intermodulation measurements in the same way

as outlined above for harmonic distortion measurements.
a.

Connect the equipment as shown in figure 3-2.

b. Connect the two signal generators shown in

the illustration so the intermodulation products will
differ by at least 500 cycles. The voltmeter can
then differentiate between the intermodulation products.
c. Adjust SELECTIVE VOLTMETER RANGE
switch S104 to the -60 db position for maximum
sensitivity.
d. Scan the frequency band carefully and record
the level of each observed signal.
e. Compare the ratio of the intermodulation product levels to the test tone levels. System specifications determine the degree of permissible intermodulation distortion.
3.5.3 CROSSTALK MEASUREMENT. The 476J-l
is used to measure both near-end and far-end crosstalk on open-wire lines or cables. The various
crosstalk components can be separated as to level

a. Connect the signal generator and selective

voltmeter as shown by figure 3-3.
b. Adjust the output of the signal generator for a
level of approximately +23 dbm*. It is necessary to
provide a low impedance termination on the generator
in some cases to provide a flat output over the test
frequency range.
c. Vary the signal generator across the test spectrum, at the same time tuning the 476J -1 to the signal
generator frequency.
d. Record the level of each measurable frequency
component as indicated by meter MI01. Intelligible
near-end cross-talk attenuation measurements up to
130 db can be measured.
The instrument can also be used as a very sensitive
null indicator in a bridge type crosstalk meter. No
additional balancing filters are necessary.
The 476J-l can be used in an actual carrier circuit
for analYZing crosstalk on specific channels. Measurements can be made with the meter for purposes of
pinpointing the disturbing frequencies. Headphones
can be used for audible interpretations of the crosstalk.

Principles of Operation

SECTION IV
PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION
4.1

GENERAL

This section consists of a circuit analysis of the

voltmeter by stages, paralleling the schematic diagram, figure 5-1.

The 476J-1 consists of four major circuits:

a. An r-f amplifier with an input matching network and a low pass filter.
b. An 800 kc i-f circuit, consisting of an 804 to
1550 kc vfo, a ring modulator, an 800 kc band pass
filter, a stage of resistance-coupled amplification,
and another 800 kc band pass filter.
c. A 15 kc i-f circuit consisting of a 785 kc
crystal-controlled oscillator, a ring modulator, a
15 kc band pass filter, a variable attenuator, two
stages of resistance-coupled amplification, and a
cathode follower.
d. A metered output circuit, consisting of another 15 kc band pass filter, three stages of resistance-coupled amplification with feedback, and a
metered output. Refer to figure 2-1 for circuit
identification.
e. A 50 kc crystal-controlled calibration oscillator.

4.2

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION

4.2.1 INPUT AND AMPLIFICATION. The 476J-1

input is either balanced or unbalanced, dependent on
the position of the INPUT IMPEDANCE switch S101.
Center INPUT terminal E102 is at ground potential
in the UNBALANCED position. Terminal E103 is
at chassis ground potential and can be used for a
test equipment common ground.
The signal is coupled through capacitor CI01 or
transformer T101, INPUT IMPEDANCE switch
810lB and S101C to the INPUT attenuator switch
8102. Through a series of switched resistances,
RllO through R1l5, input levels of up to +40 db can

10

be measured without overloading the voltmeter.

ADJ INPUT potentiometer R109 is a non-inductive
variable resistance which further varies the input
level. The signal is coupled directly to tube VIOl,
a dual-triode untuned resistance-coupled amplifier,
and from there to the center tap of function selector
switch 8105B. The 476J-l functions as a vtvm when
S105 is in position 4, and as a selective voltmeter in
positions 1, 2, 5, and 6. The CAL 1 position is a
no-signal position. Filter FL101 is a low pass filter
which presents a high impedance to signals above
750 kc and a low impedance to lower frequencies.
The signal is applied from the output of FL101 to the
primary Windings of ring modulator transformer
T102.
4.2.2 800 KC I-F CIRCUIT WITH FILTERING. The
ring modulator consists of transformers T102 and
T103, diodes CRl01 through CR104, and potentiometers R127 and R128. The vfo consists of tube
V102, MAIN TUNING capacitor C131, and a series
of switched LC circuits: inductors L102 through
L107 and trimmer capacitors C133, C135, C137,
C139, C141, and C143, all switched by FREQ RANGE
switch 8103. Trimmer capacitor C132 permits
accurate calibration of the dial frequency with respect
to the input signal frequency.
The 800-kc intermediate frequency signal is coupled
from the output of ring modulator transformer T103
to the input terminals of 800-kc band pass filter
FL102. It is then applied from the output of filter
FL102 to the grid of tube V103 and further amplified.
The output from V103 is applied to another 800 kc
bandpass filter and to the second ring modulator.
The 800 kc filters pass only a 200 cps bandwidth.
4.2.3 15 KC I-F CIRCUIT WITH FILTERING. The
800 kc signal mixes with a 785 kc signal from the
crystal-controlled oscillator, tube V104. at the
second ring modulator. The 15 kc differElnce frequency is applied to switched series attenuator,
SELECTIVE VOLTMETER RANGE switch 8104 and
resistors RI36 through RI4I. The signal is then
applied to resistance-coupled amplifiers V105 and
V10'! A, cathode follower V107B, and to the input of
the 15 kc band pass filter FL105.

Section IV - V
Principles of Operation - Maintenance

4.2.4 OUTPUT CIRCUIT. The 15 kc signal is applied from the output of FL105 to terminals 2 and 5
of function selector switch S105B and to the grid of
tube V10 S. The three resistance-coupled amplifiers,

V10S and V109 further amplify the signal which is

then applied to output meter M101 or phones through
detector diodes CR110 and CR111 and switch S105A.
