INTRODUCTION

PACKAGING OF CANDIES
Candy wrapper or sweets wrapper is a common term for this packaging.
1.1 Purposes of packaging
Packaging preserves aroma and flavor and eases shipping and dispensation. Wax paper seals
against air, moisture, dust, and germs, while cellophane is valued by packagers for its
transparency and resistance to grease, odors and moisture. In addition, it is often reseal
able. Polyethylene is another form of film sealed with heat, and this material is often used to
make bags in bulk packaging. Saran wraps are also common. Aluminum foils wrap chocolate
bars and prevent transfer of water vapor, while being lightweight, non-toxic and odor proof.
Vegetable parchment lines boxes of high-quality confections like gourmet
chocolates. Cardboard cartons are less common, though they offer many options concerning
thickness and movement of water and oil.
.
Packages are often sealed with a starch-based adhesive derived from tapioca, potato, wheat,
sago, or sweet potato. Occasionally, glues are made from the bones and skin of cattle and
hogs for a stronger and more flexible product, but this is not as common because of the
expense.

Figure 1.1.0- Salt water taffy is usually wrapped in pieces of wax paper

1.2 History
Prior to the 1900s, candy was commonly sold unwrapped from carts in the street, where it
was exposed to dirt and insects. By 1914 there were some machines to wrap gum and stick
candies, but this was not the common practice. After the polio outbreak in 1916, unwrapped
candies garnered widespread censure because of the dirt and germs. At the time, only upscale
candy stores used glass jars. With advancements in technology wax paper was adopted, and
foil and cellophane were imported from France by DuPontin 1925. Necco packagers were
one of the first companies to package without human touch.
1.3 Marketing and design
Packaging helps market the product as well. Manufacturers know that candy must be
hygienic and attractive to customers. In the children's market quantity, novelty, large size and
bright colors are the top sellers. Many companies redesign the packaging to maintain
consumer appeal.

Figure 1.3.0- Packaging may be used as a type of gift wrapping

1.4 Shelf life
Most candies can be safely stored in their original packaging at room temperature in a dry,
dark cupboard for months or years. As a result, the shelf life of candy is longer than for many
foods.

Candy Wrappers

2.0

Candy Wrappers

Over the course of centuries, candy manufacturers used wrappers as an excellent means to
attract customers, advertise their products and protect its contest from wide range of harmful
effect. Here you can find out more about how candy wrappers came into use.

2.1

Old Time Candy Wrapper Collection

Candy wrappers are the common term for the printed, outer covering of candy bars and
confectionary items used to protect and promote the product.

2.2

Candy Wrappers History and Origins

Nobody knows when or where first candy wrapper came from, but we can safely assume the
reasons which forced the candy makers to embrace wrappers as one of the most important
parts of their product. As the recipes for creating many new candies begun emerging during
European industrial revolution, sellers of candy quickly noticed that increased competition
demands several improvements - a way to protect some of their ingredients from outside
influences (heat, moisture), preserve the structure of the candy against biological threats that
arise after prolonged life on shelves (microbes) and finally as a perfect way to market their
product to prospective customers. Even more importantly, chocolate and candies were in the
beginning very expensive, and much need was invested into enabling such products to remain
edible for as much time as possible.
One of the defining moments in the history of candy wrappers was the introduction of "nickel
bar" chocolate in 1890. This product created by Milton S. Hershey became instant success, as
chocolate finally became available to everyone. By end of Second World War, Hershey's
factory produced over 24 million bars o chocolate per week, and the craze for packaged
candies gripped entire world. As the years went by since the appearance of "nickel bar",
manufacturers produced more and more colorful wrappers whose biggest goal was the
successful communication to the consumers. In modern times governments of many countries
around the world regulate the laws regarding candy transportation, prevention about
contamination, providing information about candy products, which are all connected to the
candy wrappers.
Here are some of the most important uses of candy wrappers:
Protection - Many ingredients of candy (chocolate, gelatin, and others) are not suited for
prolonged influence of heat, moisture and pressure. For that purpose, every candy has its own
unique system for wrapping and protecting its ingredients.
Preservation - Airtight seals of wrappers are absolutely crucial from protecting the candy
from harmful outside influences, such as microbes, contaminants and unwanted human
tampering. This represents one of the best measures in prolonging the shelf life of candy
products.
Marketing - Outside layer of candy packaging is not only useful for informing the customers
about the contest, ingredients, dietary information of particular candy, bar is very powerful
marketing and advertising tool that attracts the users in many innovative ways.

Materials used for wrapping

11

5.0

Wrapping materials: Film, Paper, Foil

Often when people talk about plastic films, they treat them as one type of material, grouping
all flexible plastic packaging into a single category. What they do not realize is that plastic
films compose a broad category of materials that can be relatively simple or complex
depending on the demands of a particular product or package. They can be sourced from
petroleum or from plants including wood or corn. They can be biodegradable or home
compostable or be reused for energy. They can be laminated including metal and different
films. They can have coatings to enhance the product or retard exposure to gases.
Like plastic bottles and containers, film can be made with different resins, each of which has
a unique combination of properties that makes it ideal for certain applications. For example,
low density polyethylene (LDPE) film acts as a gas barrier, which is necessary for packaging
such things as chicken, which would quickly spoil if exposed to oxygen. Polyvinyl chloride
(PVC) film, on the other hand, is gas permeable and necessary for packaging such things as
red meat, which require a small amount of oxygen inside the package in order to keep it
fresh.
Plastic film also can be clear or colored, printed or plain, single- or multilayered and
combined with other materials such as aluminum and paper. It can come in a variety of
thicknesses and degrees of opacity.
The material you use in your process material is a little tricky to think about.
Factors to weigh
product protection and enhancement
environmental impact of creating the wrapping material
amount of material used in the process
environmental impact of disposal of the material post-consumer or at intermediate point.
Overwrapping is again a more efficient way to wrap for several reasons.
The kind of film it uses
The amount of film it uses
The kind of film overwrapping uses:1. Petroleum-based Films
2. Bio-based Films

1. Petroleum-based-Films
Petroleum based films are the most common and usually the most inexpensive films used
for wrapping today. Most of these films require stabilizers in order to prevent them
degrading prematurely. Discussion about how to use stabilizers to permit degrading is
ongoing at this point.
Plastics have different properties. Here is an explanation of some of the different sources
from which film for wrapping is made, a description of their properties and some of the
applications in which they are commonly used.

12

Polypropylene film is the most commonly used film in overwrapping and flow
wrapping. Polyethylene film is the most commonly used film in shrink-wrapping. Pound
for pound, polypropylene is less expensive than polyethylene. And worse yet, more
polyethylene film is used because it is first trimmed to get rid of the excess and then
shrunk 20-25% to conform to the package it wraps.
Polypropylene film does not shrink. It is designed to wrap around a package with
overlaps between 1/4 and 3/4 inches. This overlap is enough to ensure a seal while
minimizing film and energy consumption. It provides a nice gift-wrapped look to the
package while being efficient in film use and energy consumption.
Over wrappers can wrap using non-petroleum based materials such as biodegradable,
paper or waxed paper. That overwrapping provides a safe and attractive wrap is our
customers bonus.
Low Density Polyethylene LDPE/LLDPE These two polyethylene resins often are
talked about as if they are one because they have similar propertiesboth have good
clarity, are good moisture barriers and fair gas barriers, can be heat sealed and are strong
and highly flexible. They both are also used in similar applications, including but not
limited to stretch wrap and shrink wrap.
High Density Polyethylene HDPE Because it is part of the polyethylene family, HDPE
film is found in many of the same applications as LDPE and LLDPE. In recent years, it
has made inroads into the film market mostly because of its ability to allow manufacturers
to use less material (i.e., source reduction) to make a package that can deliver an equal
amount of product. HDPE also tends to be stiffer than other polyethylene films, which is
an important characteristic for packages that need to maintain their shape. In addition,
HDPE is strong and puncture resistant, has good moisture barrier properties and is
resistant to grease and oils.
Polypropylene PP film comes from a resin that has a high melting point, which makes it
desirable in packages that require sterilization at high temperatures. PP film commonly is
used to package such things as cigarettes, candy, snack foods, bakery products, cheese
and sanitary goods. Because PP has only average gas barrier properties, it often is used in
combination with such things as a PVC coating or acrylic, which provide additional
barrier properties.
BOPP film (Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene) film in has become one of the most
popular, high growth films in the world market. BOPP film is available in a wide range of
film variations targeting the packaging, pressure sensitive tape, label, stationery,
metallizing and decorative markets.

Polyvinyl Chloride PVC film can be found in stretch wrap for industrial and pallet wrap
(although in very small amounts), shrink wrap (again in very small amounts), some bags
and liners, adhesive tape, labels, blood bags and I.V. bags. It also is used exclusively to
package fresh red meats. That is because it is semi-permeable, which means that just
enough oxygen can pass through in much smaller quantities that impart special properties
to a package.

13

2. Bio-based Films
These films come from a variety and growing list of sources. A non-exhaustive list
follows. It is important to keep in mind that the source does not dictate the molecular
structure. A bio-based film is not necessarily biodegradable, although it may come from a
renewable source. Similarly a petroleum-based film can be biodegradable but does not
come from a currently renewable source. Here we discuss corn, sugar and wood based
plastics. New bio-plastics from other materials are coming to market.
Polylactic Acid Film (PLA) film is currently made from corn or sugar cane. While it is
more commonly used as a substituted for PE, it can also be used as a substitute for BOPP.
This film can be industrially composted.
Cellulose films are customarily made from wood. Think of them as clear paper.
Cellophane is the original cellulose based film. They make an excellent substitute for
polypropylene film. If properly treated, moisture should not be an issue and the
biodegradability is preserved. In fact, one thing that can set these films apart is their
potential for home composting.
Paper wrapped packages typically run from 20-60 per minute. Two types of gift paper
may be used, treated gift paper or plain gift paper.
On treated paper, a small layer of adhesive is pre-applied to the paper during the
conversion process. During the wrap process, heaters activate and begin to set the
glue. Compression belts are used to hold the flaps in place until sealed.
Other makers choose to use standard gift paper which requires that hot or cold melt glue
be integrated into the wrapping equipment
Waxed paper is most commonly used for frozen foods. While waxed paper requires of
the same circumstances as untreated paper, it is capable of running at higher speeds
provided it is supported appropriately.
Foil is the most fragile of wrapping materials and has a memory that makes it
challenging.

14

Chapter-6

What Is Overwrapping?

15

6.0 What is Overwrapping?

Overwrapping is a process in which a box-shaped carton, tray, bundle, etc. is wrapped and
sealed. The only requirement for the package shape is that it have flat sides to be sealed. It is
also called diamond-fold wrapping, tuck-and-fold wrapping, gift-box wrapping, cigarette
wrapping and bundle wrapping. Tear tape is often used as an easy-open feature.
The end result looks like a gift wrap, with one long seam located either on the bottom or
side of the package and each end of the package neatly tucked, folded and sealed. The first
tuck-and-fold machines were designed in the 1920s by the original Package Machinery
Company.
You can use a variety of relatively stiff, single- or multi-ply web materials including clear,
printed and/or metallized polypropylene (PP), cellophane, paper, glassine, waxed paper,
aluminum foil or metallized paper/BOPP (biaxially oriented polypropylene). You cannot
overwrap with soft [polyethylene-based] films. Such films are too soft and have too much
give to be used in overwrapping.
While you need heat to seal the film or set the glue (with paper), your heat needs are limited
to the spots needing sealing. Overwrapping machines are built in elevator, in-line, turret or
rotary styles.

17

7.0

What are chocolate wrapper and what not?

The definition is any wrapper covering chocolate bar, tablet, slab, egg or chocolate candy bar
(where chocolate creates important part of product - at least 30% - for example Kit Kat or
Mars bar) which contains any information about product and producer made of any material.
It can be from chocolate of ANY WEIGHT.

Figure7.0.1:- chocolate wrapper

Types of chocolate wrappers
From early times of manufacturing chocolate bars paper became most popular material for
chocolate wrappers. Under outer paper wrapper is always inner wrapper (foil) usually made
of aluminum or plastic? There are 3 main types of paper chocolate wrapper.
First type is strip of paper wrapped over the chocolate bar so it is usually easy to take off the
wrapper from chocolate. This wrapping method was more frequent in the past. It is used
mostly in USA, England, the Netherlands, and Estonia or in many Asian countries now.
Second type covers complete chocolate bar like an envelope. This envelope style of paper
wrapper is widely spread in most countries. It is sometimes necessary to open these wrappers
carefully and try not to tear them. For some chocolates is often used as a wrapping material
cardboard paper. Typical is for some filled chocolates especially those with liquid filling like
spirits, for chocolates with whole hazelnuts, for higher weights chocolates, portioned
chocolates like Schogetten, for luxury chocolates or for chocolate bars with unusual shape.
Also worldwide known chocolate bar Tolerance is covered by cardboard wrapper.

Except most frequented paper other wrapping materials like cellophane, metalized foils or
plastic foils became more and more popular from economic reasons. These wrappers are
often hard to open without damage thats why some collectors dont collect them. Typical
use is for square chocolates, some cheaper chocolates or for chocolate candy bars like Mars.
German manufacturer of square chocolates Ritter used cellophane as a wrapping material till
1978, then paper wrapper combined with aluminum and since 1991 plastic foil wrapper
which is easy to open without damage what I cant say about some similar wrappers from
other countries.

Tolerance wrapper

Metalized foil wrapper

Among European makers of chocolate bars is more and more common to wrap the chocolates
in plastic foils. Almost all small bars and candy bars are now packed in plastic foil and also
some cheaper chocolates like 100g bars of Trumpf or Waldbaur in Germany or Lola
chocolates by Swiss Halba. Large chocolate manufacturers started to pack their chocolate
bars and slabs into plastic foils instead of classic paper wrappers in last ten years ( Cadbury
since about 2002, Kraft Foods (chocolates Milka, Alpen Gold, Karuna, Figaro, Marabou
since 2004-2007) and also Czech chocolate factory Nestl (local chocolate brand Orion) since
autumn 2008.
Specific type of wrappers uses some Scandinavian companies - they combine paper with
inner metalized foil in one wrapper. This method is often used for packing chocolate pieces in
rolls. Some companies like Italian Delicia also use combination of plastic wrapper with inner
metalized foil.

Motives on chocolate wrappers

Most frequented motives are connected with chocolate and its composition: chocolate, milk,
cows in Alps, cocoa pods, cocoa seeds, nuts etc. There are also special wrappers made for
some occasions, children chocolates with motives like flowers, cars, planes, animals,
cartoons. You can find almost everything especially on private labels wrappers. Some
companies use own traditional colour of wrappers (Milka, Cadbury, and Orion) but most of
them use different colours of wrappers for each taste.
